The Vampire's Warden, a Paranormal Romance (Undead in Brown County #1) Review

I really enjoyed this short book, and could not put it down once I started. It takes a truly new approach to the traditional vampire story, with the perspective of a vampire "caretaker", one of the helpful humans usually glossed over in other stories. The tension is set up very early in the story, but there are so many characters and most of them are only briefly addressed. I was very confused when the main character's name seemed to slip from Sarah to "I" - what is going on there? Alex and Michael's stories sound like they could each have a whole prequel story leading into the current book. The sibling relationship between Sarah and Katie just didn't coming across at all. Until Alex talks about Selena, you never know that this is the name of Sarah and Katie's mother.
This story pulls you right in at the beginning, but it feels like many of the details are still in the author's head and need to be put into the story to create a foundation capable of supporting a series of books. Background on the vampire political structure in the story is incomplete at best. Why Dr. Fleming is involved with the vampires is never explained. Who will replace him when he dies? A son perhaps? How is it that Sarah never actually sits down and reads her father's journal, but suddenly knows all about vampires and the meadow? An old boyfriend pops up and disappears, but is never tied to anything else in the story. What is Sarah's Native American heritage, and why has most of her Native American blood has become so diluted, especially if the family has known it was happening for three generations? There are so many potentially interesting pieces missing. At the beginning of the story she has a pet dog and a horse she has never ridden; at the end she also has a cat that I can't recall mention of earlier in the book.
I would be thrilled to see a re-written version of the first book before getting in to the rest of the series. It could become a top seller instead of a $.99 bargain. The first book was just too short and needed some "fleshing out", in several ways.

The Vampire's Warden, a Paranormal Romance (Undead in Brown County #1) Overview

** Now includes bonus material from The Vampire's Curse: Book 2 in the series.**"I found this book to be unique in its approach to the typical vampire story. It's far from typical it's very different. I'm not going to give a spoiler here other than its storyline of the sentinel concept is awesome and very different. I can't wait to read the next book in the series. Very Well Done. Buy it and read it now if you haven't yet." - KhloeZoe via B&N Review"S.J. Wright is an author to be on the lookout for! Her writing style is fantastic, The world she created in The Vampire's Warden was so real to me! I cannot wait for this series to continue! This is the best Vampire book I have read... and that is saying A LOT!" - MD_Christie via B&N ReviewIt was a flash in the moonlight, a blur of motion like I'd never witnessed before. No human had the capacity to move like that. When I found myself face-to-face with him there in the meadow, I knew without a doubt that the journal was authentic. I knew that my grandfather hadn't been crazy at all. Because a foot away from me stood a vampire.Sarah reads her grandfather's journal in stunned disbelief. What was once her grandfather's responsibility has passed to her father and now to her. She has become the Warden. Her life will never be the same. This is part one of a three-part series. It is 31,880 words long. It is a novella, not book length.Revision uploaded 4/26/2011.
