Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life Review

This is the sort of book that you want to give to all of your family members who have reached the age of 45.
The author captures the way Western society works, with its focus on the first half of people's lives. This percipient sociological analysis is just a starting point for his exploration of the second half of life.
As an aside, our obsession on the first half of life is growing stronger -- we care about courtship, career choice, finding a mate, establishing ourselves, and this is the subject that too many 60 year old people worry at, fantasize over, concentrate on, well past the day that they should let this half of their lives go... and think about the second half.
In this second half, people know they will suffer, that they will enter the "shadowlands", that this part of life can be about suffering and diminution. This author outlines how this half of life can be about joy, about falling upward in a spiritual sense, about the second half of life being about opening yourself. A book like this can help center a reader on the need to get past embarrassment, get past a concern for the material, and begin to understand what faces you, and what you are...
There is God in this book, and the book is frank about being a guidebook, a road map, towards salvation. That is inherent in the entire theme, the idea that a second half of life, with travails, can open to something more.
So many people I know are concerned with retirement, but not what to do in retirement, about a lake home, but not a better self... There is a sense that an obsession with retirement, in this second half, will then relegate health problems, money problems, pain, the death of friends.. into painful shocks. This book tells you that these painful days can be something more, a new journey.
Well written, with a gentle, funny, and open style, this is a book that actually can change your life.

The New American Bible Revised Edition, Large Print Edition Review

The NAB-RE Large Print edition from Oxford University Press is a good quality, well printed bible. It has 12 point text for the bible verses and 9 or 10 point for the notes at the end of each book of the bible. The paper is white (but thin enough to allow print from the facing page to be seen). The ink is very dark grey to black so you will get good contrast between print and paper for easy reading.
The Pacific Duvell bound edition (ISBN: 978-0-19-529812-3) has thumb indexing, stitching slightly inset from the cover edges, and it has a soft non-slippery feel. The binding appears to be sewn, so it should be fairly hard wearing. The pages are gilt edged and there's a marker ribbon (black in the tan & blue copy I have).
There are no maps at the back of the book, nor embedded in the text. There is a copy of the Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation (Dei Verbum) at the front of the bible (printed in 12 point with 9 or 10 point notes).
I haven't had time to read the whole of the revised Old Testament, but I can say that the Psalms read well, and on the whole the NAB-RE is a good quality translation for study. The notes at the end of each book allow a reader to treat this bible as a study bible, however I prefer to have the notes at the bottom of each page, so I must mark this edition down slightly for that reason and because of the lack of maps.
At the time I am writing this Amazon's product description is in error (stating that the binding is "leather" when it is in reality "Pacific Duvelle" - a synthetic leather-like binding material).
I recommend this bible for serious bible readers who need reading glasses and also for people who prefer larger type.

Catholic Scripture Study Bible RSV-CE Large Print Review

I was raised Evangelical Protestant and converted to the Catholic Church in 1994. I had been raised with a slew of potential Bible translations and study formats. I am glad to now see the selection growing for Catholics as well. We Catholics have a distinct and historical perspective of studying and interpreting Scripture based on the history and tradition of 2,000 years, initially established and practiced by the very first Christians.
We are grateful to Gail Buckley of Catholic Scripture Study International for providing yet another excellent Catholic Study Bible. It has helpful charts, indexes, maps, quotes and notes. You may notice it is not the cheapest Study Bible on the market but that is due in part to the luxurious and beautiful leather cover. It reminds me of being a boy and proudly holding my father's elegant and supple leather-covered Bible.
You won't be sorry if you add this CSS Catholic Study Bible to your library. Keep readily available on your desk. And it is a good idea to carry it to church with you, to your CSS Bible study, and when you fly on a plane. Good work Gail!

NASB Large Print Pew Bible (Black, Hardcover Cloth) Review

The NASB is in the forefront of Biblical scholarship, and if you want to own only one copy of the Bible (word for word translation) and you are a non-Catholic Christian, then I would tell you to seriously consider this version (I would point Catholics towards the NRSV or NAB). The NASB does not use inclusive language, it is a very strict interpretation but flows smoothly, and also tends to favor the traditional phrasing.
The NASB has traditionally been awarded the title of "the most literally accurate translation", and while I don't believe this to be 100% accurate, I think it's close on the mark. The NASB does benefit from excellent scholarship, and from major advances in Biblical discovery from the last few decades. Throw in the benefit of the cost of this Bible, which is very inexpensive, and you have an excellent Bible to use for a long time. In addition, the concordance at the back of this bible is frosting on the cake.

Barefoot Gen, Vol. 1: A Cartoon Story of Hiroshima Review

This book tell what life was like in Hiroshima in the four months before the atomic bomb. It is actually the first of a series on the effects of war and the atomic bomb on the lives of one family as seen through the eyes of a 6 year old boy, Gen Nakaoka. Based on the real-life experiences of the author, this volume opens in April 1945 and tells of the hardships of war on the people of Japan.
Gen's father is a craftsman in Hiroshima who makes wooden sandles to try to feed his five children and his pregnant wife. He is labelled a traitor by his neighbors because he is opposed to the war. We see the cruelties and hardships of their daily lives through the eyes of young Gen who can't understand why he and his family are despised. The close family values of his home life are in sharp contrast to the rabid patriotic chauvenism of his community. This volume ends with the events of August 6, the day of the atomic bomb. The story of how Gen survives is told in the subsequent volumes.
The work has been well translated from the Japanese original: Hadashi no Gen. It was originally published in serial form in 1972 and 1973 in Shukan Shonen Jampu, the largest weekly comic magazine in Japan, with a circulation of over two million. The drawings are all in black and white. This US edition was published as part of a movement to translate the book into other languages and spread around the world its message of the threat of nuclear war. It is a wonderful testimony to the strength of the human spirit and the horrors of nuclear war. There are a few introductory essays at the front of the book and a publisher's note at the end that help to put this book into perspective. It is a powerful and tragic story that I highly recommend for anyone interested in the topic.

Barefoot Gen, Vol. 1: A Cartoon Story of Hiroshima Overview

This harrowing story of Hiroshima was one of the original Japanese manga series. New and unabridged, this is an all-new translation of the author's first-person experiences of Hiroshima and its aftermath, is a reminder of the suffering war brings to innocent people. Its emotions and experiences speak to children and adults everywhere. Volume one of this ten-part series details the events leading up to and immediately following the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.

The New American Bible (With the Revised Book of Psalms and the Revised New Testament) Review

This it the Bible translation (known as the NAB) that is used in the Liturgy of the Latin Rite of the Catholic Church (i.e.: first and second readings, psalms and the Gospel) in the United States of America (Canada uses the New Revised Standard Version - NRSV).
It is a very easy to read translation, and is truly a translation, as the scholars who compiled the New American translation did so from Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek texts. This is unlike other Catholic translations, which have often worked from the Latin text of the Latin Vulgate. In the foreword, it talks about how the oldest and best-known and supportable texts were used in the writing of this translation, making it one of the best historical translations you can find.
Since it is a Catholic Bible, it contains the deuterocanonical books, which non-Catholic's erroneously call the "Apocrypha" (i.e.: I say erroneous because apocrypha means hidden, and these books are far from hidden).
Each book of the Bible contains the history of that book. Such information included is who was responsible for writing the book (when available), the period in which it was written, and the purpose and intent of the book. Along with this foreward, the each book contains extensive footnotes to assist the reader in understanding particular phrases and/or the historical context. It also contains cross-referencing material which will point the reader in the direction of other related scriptural verses.
As a pointer, this translation can also be found online by visiting the National Conference of Catholic Bishops at the United States Catholic Conference website. You will be able to read the text there and decide if this is a translation you would want to purchase. As a Catholic, I would highly recommend it to all other American Catholics.

Confessions (Oxford World's Classics) Review

Translation by Rex Warner (in Signet Classics)
This one is a very good translation, especially for the modern reader. It conveys the immediacy and vividness of a text written more than 1500 years ago. One feels almost as a voyeur peeping into the private confession of a man to his God. The honesty and unembarrassed disclosure of his sins, and fruitless search for worldly wisdom, is something we can personally identify with, even today. It is amazing how vivid the description of life in late 4th century is in this Confessions. What a wonderful way to approach History, places like Carthage, Rome or Milan, thru the eyes of a skilled and intelligent man who pours his heart on these pages for us to benefit from.
St. Augustine's life, however distant in time, is filled with events, desires, and troubles, as common today as in the year 400. We can identify fully with him, and in his longing and weakness we can see our own soul portrayed. He talks about his childhood, his family, his studies and his lifelong pursuit of wisdom and truth, specially since the age of 19. We get immersed in the daily life of people in the 4th Century under the Roman Empire, their daily worries, their intellectual debates, their religious confrontations. We see the social conditions of all classes of people, from the wealthy and idle to the slaves who fight in the Circus. We see people living, talking, traveling, dreaming, and going about their business as if we were present with them. No wonder this book is an authentic classic, one that I should have read long ago.
There are many reasons to read this book. Those interested in History are certainly going to find plenty of information from eye-witness perspective; those who like to read personal memories and autobiographies won't have it easy to find a better one. For those interested in the history of religion and Catholicism, this is a must, a landmark in Christian literature. Whatever you are looking for, this book is certainly one that will satisfy your intellectual curiosity as well as fill you spiritually.
One thing to bear in mind is that the Confessions are not addressed to us, readers, that is why certain things about the author's behavior seem inexplicable: certain things that would seem to us to merit more explaining, being only mentioned briefly (his behavior toward the woman he had a child with, for example), while other issues are given a lot more space. Of course the Lord knew his heart well, but still, one is intrigued at this man.

Confessions (Oxford World's Classics) Overview

In his own day the dominant personality of the Western Church, Augustine of Hippo today stands as perhaps the greatest thinker of Christian antiquity, and his Confessions is one of the great works of Western literature. In this intensely personal narrative, Augustine relates his rare ascent from a humble Algerian farm to the edge of the corridors of power at the imperial court in Milan, his struggle against the domination of his sexual nature, his renunciation of secular ambition and marriage, and the recovery of the faith his mother Monica had taught him during his childhood. Now, Henry Chadwick, an eminent scholar of early Christianity, has given us the first new English translation in thirty years of this classic spiritual journey.Chadwick renders the details of Augustine's conversion in clear, modern English. We witness the future saint's fascination with astrology and with the Manichees, and then follow him through scepticism and disillusion with pagan myths until he finally reaches Christian faith. There are brilliant philosophical musings about Platonism and the nature of God, and touching portraits of Augustine's beloved mother, of St. Ambrose of Milan, and of other early Christians like Victorinus, who gave up a distinguished career as a rhetorician to adopt the orthodox faith.Augustine's concerns are often strikingly contemporary, yet his work contains many references and allusions that are easily understood only with background information about the ancient social and intellectual setting. To make The Confessions accessible to contemporary readers, Chadwick provides the most complete and informative notes of any recent translation, and includes an introduction to establish the context. The religious and philosophical value of The Confessions is unquestionable--now modern readers will have easier access to St. Augustine's deeply personal meditations.Chadwick's lucid translation and helpful introduction clear the way for a new experience of this classic.About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.
