This workbook is expensive with poor activities. While most of the work corresponds with the chapter work, the directions are in spanish, so if you cant figure out what the directions say your stuck.
I just dont feel this is quality material.

Puntos de partida: An Invitation to Spanish (Student Edition) Review

This is a horrible textbook to use for teaching an online course. My school uses it, and even after 2 years of Spanish in high school, the material is just way to far out there for most students to grasp easily. It starts out assuming a proficiency with Spanish words and sentence structure. The online portion is done at a normal conversation pace for native Spanish speakers, which is far too fast for this level of textbook. There is no way to slow down, or show textually what is being said on most of these online exercises.
The book is the equivalent of dropping you in the middle of Spain and saying "Figure it out".I've self taught myself far more difficult languages with less trouble than this book is giving me.

Glencoe Spanish ¡Buen viaje Level 1, Student Edition (Spanish Edition) Review

I've been teaching middle-school Spanish for 14 years and have had a lot of success with ¡Buen Viaje! level 1. Seventh-grade covers the first half of the book and 8th grade finishes the book. The students have Spanish 3 days a week for 50 minutes each class and at least 20% of each graduating class for the last 4 years have placed in Honors Spanish.
Unlike some of the other reviewers, I don't find the lack of English translation of unit vocabulary a drawback at all. At the beginning of every unit, all my students have to translate the vocabulary. I usually allow 1 class period to 1 1/2 class periods for translation of vocab; it may be that some teachers don't want to allot class time for that, but, the program comes with overheads so you can minimize class time devoted to vocab translation by showing the overhead and letting the kids copy down the translations. Doesn't take long.
We make extensive use of the cultural readings; we read them aloud and translate them in class. I like the way grammar is presented, although, I do make some changes. I really drill verbs because I want the children to be able to read. Quickly.
We also make extensive use of the writing exercises found in the text and the workbook. The audio CDs and accompanying DVD are also used frequently.
I find the logic of text arrangement, well, very logical. Once the children see the logic--you do have to point it out often--they start to study smarter.
Anyway, I'm very happy with the outcome for my students and give this text 5 stars.

Ven Conmigo: Holt Spanish Level 1 (Spanish Edition) Review

In my school they used this book for Spanish I. I found that although it was adequate, it went at a pretty slow pace. Throughout the entire book, as far as verbs go, it only teaches the present active verb conjugations, the simple concept of being going to do something, and at the very end, the present progressive, which translates to I am running (etc.).
One of the better parts of the book was the vocabulary. There were a good amount of nouns (although not as many verbs), and they were grouped somewhat coherently.

The title would lead one to believe that there is actually an audio portion to this book. What there is, however, are 74 pages that are of absolutely no use because there is no tape or CD included. For those of us who do not speak Spanish and have children trying to learn it this book is a waste of money.

Dos mundos Student Edition with Online Learning Center Bind-in Passcode (McGraw-Hill World Languages) (Spanish Edition) Review

I teach college Spanish and I love this text. It is thoughtfully constructed and provides numerous activities for communication in the target language. Dos mundos also provides very useful ideas for instructors. The pages are colorful and the content engaging. My students love all the activities I use from this text. I wish more Spanish instructors would embrace the methodology presented in Dos mundos. My level one Spanish students actually speak Spanish (albeit low-level Spanish). I don't know if I would recommend this text for independent study, however. I believe it would be most effective if used in conjunction with a dynamic instructor. I do agree that the authors should include a separate English-Spanish dictionary section. I also find the video segments to be very poor (and why are they exactly the same as the ones for Puntos de partida when they both have such different approaches to language acquisition?)
