Serpent Mage: The Death Gate Cycle, No 4/Audio Cassettes Review

Serpent Mage takes you to the fourth world of the Death Gate Series. It takes you to the world of Water, known as Chelstra. Here, in the beginning of the novel, Alfred finds himself in the crystal tombs of the Sartan.........AND they are still living. Once Alfred wakes up his fellow Sartan, he realizes that he is talking to the one and only Samah.
Samah is the lead Sartan in a council of Sartan that had Sundered the world. He and his fellow Sartan have been left asleep for thousands of years. They can not believe the corruption that has taken place on the other worlds. In due time, Alfred is ostricized by his own Sartan.
Haplo has entered the world to find that the saltwater on this world has a debilitating effect on his magic. He comes across some of the Mensch on this world to find that they are unique here on Chelstra......they are at peace. However, Haplo comes across some "creatures" that are more evil than the Sartan, and they are the serpents.
This novel is excellent due to the complex nature of the whole story. On one hand, you have the totally evil serpents who thrive off of chaos. And on the other you have Alfred and Haplo, who are the only ones who truly understand the dreadful power of the serpents.
Alfred has finally found his greatest desire, and that is living Sartan. However, he realizes that he is nothing like the original Sartan. Unfortunately, Alfred does not have similar opinions as the original council created by Samah. As a restult, Alfred faces the same punishment by Samah for those Sartan who opposed Samah. The punishment is stunning, and shocking.
Again, this novel is excellent, because you further understand both Alfred and Haplo, and what the whole purpose of the Death Gate is. It is fast paced, and chaotic in nature, but the enjoyment level is high. Overall, this novel is very informative as to what is occuring in the present and the past. With the addition of the serpents, this should leave to a stunning conclusion in this series.

Elven Star (Deathgate Cycle, Vol 2) Review

This is the 2nd book of the Death Gate Cycle and has only one returning character from the first book "Dragon Wing" : the Patryn Haplo. The book starts out slow as we are introduced to the Realm of Fire, Pryan. This world stays lit constantly which has made the surface a massive jungle so high that only dwarves have ever seen the ground. The story starts with our introduction to an elf family who are in the weapons business. As the best in the trade, they are the richest in the land. They are selling a new shipment of magic weapons to a pair of human traders/smugglers who in turn are smuggling them to the dwarves. The dwarves are worried due to rumors that mythical Tytans are on the move and destroying everything in their path.
It is into this scene that Zifnab (Fizban for those who've read the Dragonlance series) makes a grand entrance fighting to control a huge dragon. After gaining control of the dragon, he predicts Haplo's coming and that the Patryn will be their savior.
So when Haplo does show up, he is surprised to see he has been expected and his arrival is none to soon. The mythical Tytans have proved to be all to real and are destroying everything in their path. Much to Haplo's surprise, these Tytans know crude Sartan magic which they use with the force of a mountain and nearly kill Haplo. Haplo and a few survivors barely escape with there lives and make for one of the "stars" in the sky. It is here that Haplo learns about the creation of the Tytans but is no closer to learning what happened to his enemies, the Sartans.
Learning about the political situation of Pryan is a tad slow in the begining but Zifnab makes great comic relief and the Tytans make for an interesting creature that (IMO) helps speed the book along. This book continues to slowly show us that Haplo is not pure evil just because he's a Patryn. All-in-all an excellent read!

Fire Sea: Death Gate Cycle Vol 3 Review

Haplo the Patryn and his dog leave the Nexus on their third journey, this time to Abarrach, Realm of Stone. Haplo tours the four elemental worlds at his lord's command, preparing the sundered realms for the coming of the Patryn leader and for an easy conquest of the worlds by the Patryns. Haplo also searches for traces of the Sartan, the godly wizards who are the ancient enemies of the Patryns and who, except for one weak survivor in the realm of Air, seem to have died out.
It is this very Sartan, the clumsy and apologetic Alfred Montbank, who, while Haplo crosses Death's Gate to Abarrach, materializes on Haplo's ship. Haplo must grudgingly accept the presence of his sworn enemy at his side as he enters a world in which the two must combine their powers simply to survive.
In the dying world of Abarrach, the Mensch races have all died out long ago, leaving only corrupt, powerless remnants of the Sartan, weakened by many generations of living in a world of caverns, fuming lava and noxious gases. Haplo and Alfred soon discover that the Sartan on Abarrach practice the forbidden art of necromancy - raising all their dead for everyday use in menial tasks and chores.
Our two protagonists come in contact with a young Sartan prince and his people, who have travelled from their barren land in the colder parts of the world in search of a long-lost colony on the edge of the great fire sea, nearer to the core of the world. This land is ruled by a crafty Sartan wizard, Kleitus, who knows of the world's peril and wishes to find Death's Gate, and through it not only salvation from his dying world but also the power of other worlds.
Haplo and Alfred find themselves embroiled in a civil war between Kleitus's city and the prince's people. But when a young man, in grief over his lost love, raises her from the dead far too soon, the world is plunged into a wave of mass killing and death by horrid, vengeful undead creatures.
Haplo, wishing to bring the knowledge of resurrection back to his lord to benefit the Patryns' cause, must come to realize the horrifying consequences of the Sartan's use of this dark art on Abarrach, as both he and Alfred fight to stay alive in a dying world, slowly taken over by the living dead.
