America: A Narrative History (Eighth Edition) (Vol. 1) Review

I had to buy this book for my college history class. This book was easier to read than other texbooks that I've bought and I think that it lives up to it's title. It reads more like a narrated story than a boring history lecture. This book is pretty straightforward and that makes it easy to understand what is going on in the chapter. That's what I liked about it.

America: A Narrative History (Eighth Edition) (Vol. 1) Overview

A book students will read.
America, now in its twenty-fifth year, has sold more 1.2 million copies over the past seven editions and remains the most affordable history text on the market. The narrative wins students over with compelling storytelling, colorful anecdotes and biographical sketches that make the material more memorable. Give Me Liberty: An American History, Second Edition, Volume 2 Review

I am taking two courses of American history at my community college. This book is the one that my history professor chose for the class. It is a solid treatment of the history of the United States focused around the advancement of liberty. It does not take steps to ensure a level of detail in the major wars like the Civil War or Revolution. Instead, it directs the student's attention towards events which set the stage for oppression, racism, sexism, and other discriminations. From the removal of the natives to the growing issue of slavery in the United States, Foner carefully outlines how the meaning of the word 'liberty' means different things to different cultures, and how it has changed over time. The unique qualities of American liberty are thoroughly treated. This makes the textbook flow with ease; students can easily see a growing pattern emerge in Foner's work. True to his background, Foner gives an extremely lucid presentation that set the stage for the Civil War, and the route to segregation afterwards.
My only complaint is that it does not cover the wars as thoroughly as I wished. However, this book is good enough that I will be keeping it after my two courses are done. If anyone has a friend who's interested in American history, this is the book to get them.

Give Me Liberty: An American History, Second Edition, Volume 2 Overview

Concise, clear, compact, Eric Foner's brilliant synthesis of American history is the perfect teaching tool for the U.S. survey course.
Unlike so many textbooks that overwhelm beginningstudents with encyclopedic detail, Give MeLiberty! presents the events of Americanhistory in a nimble chronological narrative that equips students to understand their significance. It is a textbook that works.

Give Me Liberty: An American History, Second Seagull Edition, Volume 1 Review

This is the best history textbook that I have ever read. It is written like a novel, and I can't seem to put it down. From having bad memories of grade and high school classes I didn't want to take U.S. History ever again. But this book erases all of that! I found it interesting that capitalism actually started in England. I apologize to the people that already knew that, but I didn't know that. That's why I am in school.
This book also makes it clear that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Like one reviewer said, one can get dark on the people who started America, (I won't use the same words that he did). That being said, after reading this you will realize how decisions that men made hundreds of years ago are still being made today. Also, the troubles that plagued their society plague ours today. There are definitely parts of the story that will make you angry!
So, if you get a chance to take a U.S. History class look out for a professor using this textbook. "Give Me Liberty" also has a companion book which is a compilation of the important documents mentioned in the text: "Voices of Freedom: Volume 1."
