An Idiot Abroad: The Travel Diaries of Karl Pilkington Review

I haven't finished the book yet, but it is absolutely hilarious so far! If you enjoy anything these guys do, and can't get enough of Karl's logic (or lack thereof!), this book is for you. I have watched some of the show that this book is based on (it's only on in the UK right now, but can be found online). It's one of the funniest shows ever.

An Idiot Abroad: The Travel Diaries of Karl Pilkington Overview

Presenting the Travel Diaries of Karl Pilkington: Adventurer. Philosopher. Knob head. Karl Pilkington isn't keen on travelling. Given the choice, he'll go on holiday to Devon or Wales or, at a push, eat English food on a package holiday in Majorca. Which isn't exactly Michael Palin, is it? So what happened when he was convinced by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant to go on an epic adventure to see the Seven Wonders of the World? Travel broadens the mind, right? You'd think so...

Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice with CD-ROM, Second Edition (UItimate Review & Reference Series) Review

KH, Graduate Student (Philadelphia)
I had been using the terrific book The Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice: Mastering Spanish Grammar for Confident Communication to brush up on my Spanish when the The Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice, CD Edition came on the market. I made great progress studying Spanish grammar and practicing it in the exercises in the book, but with the supplementary audio exercises on the two CDs I was also able to practice my skills of understanding and speaking. I like the format of the interactive audio exercises and greatly appreciate the English explanations and model sentences. Unlike other audio programs I've tried, this one gives me plenty of time to respond before the correct answer is heard. I like to do the audio drills without looking at the listening guide, but it's reassuring to know that if I don't understand something I hear I can look it up. The dictations are very helpful to me too.

The Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice book and CDs are easy to use together because the book and audio listening guide are coordinated so that chapter and page numbers match up. I know my skills have improved using them, and I feel much more confident about using Spanish in the workplace, with my friends, and when I travel.

The Milepost 2011: Alaska Travel Planner Review

The 2011 edition of "The Milepost" is the most recent version of the most uniquely valuable travel guide to the road network in the State of Alaska and Northwest Canada (British Columbia, the Yukon, and Alberta provinces). This guide is a must-have resource for the tourist, RVer, and North Country camper.
Alaska and Northwest Canada cover a huge geographic area with significant terrain and weather variations and far less infrastructure than most travelers are used to in the lower '48 states or urban Canada. Travelers should not expect gas stations, restaurants, and franchise hotels at every exit off the main roads, nor should they expect that facilities, or even the roads themselves, are open year-round. Dangerous weather and driving conditions are possible to likely as much as six months of the year. In addition, travelers need to be alert to the prospects of wildlife viewing and the dangers of close encounters in the road.
"The Milepost" provides maps, diagrams, and an almost mile-by-mile travelogue of what to expect along the main roads in the North Country. "The Milepost" includes a generous selection of photographs as well. This detailed informaton will allow the traveler to locate the next gas station, campground, hotel, or scenic spot in areas where signs and billboards may be scarce. The text is seeded with advertisements for many of the commercial establishments along the Alaska Highway in Canada and the limited major road network in Alaska, allowing travelers to plan ahead for scarce beds and RV hook-ups. Travelers can also plan ahead for fishing charters on the world-famous Kenai Peninsula or the operating hours of the few but fascinating small museums and roadside attractions to be found along the way.
The annual updating of "The Milepost" assures the traveler of some advance notice for construction or major changes in the road network. "The Milepost" does contain some information on the locations of trailheads, but serious walkers and hikers, bikers, and snow machine enthusiasts should seek elsewhere for more detailed information about off-road routes. This guide includes scheduling information for the Alaska Marine Highway System of ferries linking coastal Alaska, and directions to the digital version of this guide.
This publication is very highly recommended to both the visitor and the resident in Alaska and Northwest Canada, which are some of the most scenic parts of North America. Don't leave home without it.

Contemporary World Regional Geography Review

Found this book for my grad-daughter in school at IU. Less expensive than the books at the campus store, thanks.

Contemporary World Regional Geography Overview

Contemporary World Regional Geography provides a current, balanced geographical study of world issues through analysis of ten world regions and the countries in each. It integrates the themes of "global connections" and "local voices" and utilizes a consistent structure within each chapter. Per reviewer requests, each chapter is now organized to begin with environmental issues of the region followed by historical geography, global and local issues and economic, political, cultural, and social issues. The greatest advantage of the new organization is that students will be able to easily compare one region with another to understand similarities and differences.

Streetwise Venice Map - Laminated City Center Street Map of Venice, Italy Review

This map was a terrible disappointment. It leaves out whole important sections of the city (the Giudecca, even the Lido!), gives only the main streets (thus making it much easier to get lost in an already maze-like place), and leaves out vital information found on standard tourist maps, such as water-bus (vaporetto) routes and opening times for museums. My advice: save your money and get a decent map for a few bucks when you get to Venice.

Paris, Paris: Journey into the City of Light Review

I own a large library of books about France and have probably read almost every major title that features Paris. David Downie's new book Paris, Paris is in a class all its own. It is the most superbly written book on Paris I have read. Downie has a very lively and intelligent style, as well as a deliciously ironic sense of humor. He is also a real journalist in his brave tenacity to "get the story." He takes us to places I would never otherwise have access to because I would be much too timid to make the approach. For instance, to penetrate the inner sancta of fortress-like Ile Saint Louis mansions, he tells how he systematically tested the outer doors and found a few to be always open. He marches right into luxurious courtyards, has a good look around, and describes what he sees in vivid prose. Or when researching the root of the expression "city of light," he heads right to the office of the chief engineer of Paris' municipal lighting department. I found myself very impressed with his approach towards his subject and with his straightforward, unselfconscious way of expressing himself.
Downie is an American who has lived in Paris for over twenty years; however I have to imagine that he has gotten to know the city better than most natives. His curiosity leads him to all Paris' corners, not just the obvious showy places we all know and love. He does take us to some of my favorite neighborhoods and shows us details I've never noticed before, but he also points out the off-beat and even really ugly spots from where we can get a different perspective altogether on this rich, multi-layered city.
The book has three parts: places, people and phenomena. Every chapter is both entertaining and informative. I ate the book up like a plate of many-colored macarons, savoring every flavor. I highly recommend it to arm chair travelers and committed Parisphiles alike. It's full of history, humor and intelligent insight, with never a dull moment.
An evocative black and white image by Alison Harris, Mr. Downie's professional photographer wife and companion in adventure, accompanies each of the 30 chapters to add to the enjoyment.

Paris, Paris: Journey into the City of Light Overview

"Beautifully written and refreshingly original… makes us see [Paris] in a different light." -- San Francisco Chronicle Book Review Swapping his native San Francisco for the City of Light, travel writer David Downie arrived in Paris in 1986 on a one-way ticket, his head full of romantic notions. Curiosity and the legs of a cross-country runner propelled him daily from an unheated, seventh-floor walk-up garret near the Champs-Elysées to the old Montmartre haunts of the doomed painter Modigliani, the tombs of Père-Lachaise cemetery, the luxuriant alleys of the Luxembourg Gardens and the aristocratic Île Saint-Louis midstream in the Seine.Downie wound up living in the chic Marais district, married to the Paris-born American photographer Alison Harris, an equally incurable walker and chronicler. Ten books and a quarter-century later, he still spends several hours every day rambling through Paris, and writing about the city he loves. An irreverent, witty romp featuring thirty-one short prose sketches of people, places and daily life, Paris, Paris: Journey into the City of Light ranges from the glamorous to the least-known corners and characters of the world's favorite city. Photographs by Alison Harris. "I loved his collection of essays and anyone who's visited Paris in the past, or plans to visit in the future, will be equally charmed as well." —David Lebovitz, author of The Sweet Life in Paris "[A] quirky, personal, independent view of the city, its history and its people"—Mavis Gallant "Gives fresh poetic insight into the city… a voyage into 'the bends and recesses, the jagged edges, the secret interiors' [of Paris]."— Departures

Adventure Capitalist: The Ultimate Road Trip Review

Jim Rogers may never hit the list of top 10 best selling authors but that's not because his latest book lacks any of the important characteristics of a bestseller. The only disqualifier is self-imposed by the author. The book is designed to blow away many common illusions and prejudices about the world we live in. It is not the stuff popular fiction is made of.
Jim is a former hedge fund manager who retired at 37, following a successful stint on Wall Street alongside George Soros. In the early nineties he published his first book Investment Biker, a story of his round-the-world trip by motorcycle.
His new book called Adventure Capitalist-The Ultimate Road Trip describes his second round-the-world trip, this time by a custom built Mercedes-Benz car. He set out with his wife Paige and a team of two other guys in 1999. The trip took them on a 240,000 kilometer journey through 116 countries and ended three years later.
I believe that this book should be required reading at schools and colleges not just because it beats Phileas Fogg's journey hands down in intellectual stimulation, but because the book is also a compendium of free-market ideas and live comparative social analysis.
Jim's starting point was to search for investment opportunities. He set out with the open mind of a moneymaker on pilgrimage to find the truth about market conditions. He is looking for profitable opportunities, businesses and countries to invest in and is not prepared to accept conventional wisdom, official or ideological distortions. He has equal contempt for the party politics in US as with those of any other country he visits. He lashes out against Turkmenbashi, the dictator in charge of Turkmenistan, for perpetuating his own brand of Stalinist cult of personality and destroying the country in the process. But then shows the same contempt for President Bush for confusing devaluation with depreciation and also with former President Clinton who he blames for failing to observe and react to the creation and bursting of the biggest market bubble in decades. "I would cast a pox on both their houses-the Democrats and the Republicans" he proclaims in exasperation.
Adventure Capitalist exposes some official and popular myths for what they are in a way that made me look at politics and religion from a very different perspective. In China, Jim tells of attending service in a Chinese Christian Church, where the local worshipers, while singing "Onward Christian Soldiers" never realized that in lands as far as North Carolina there are people like Jesse Helms who are frothing at the mouth while bemoaning religious persecution in their country.
Despite not being able to obtain a visa to drive freely though Iran, Jim still admits to holding some small investments in the country and suggests forgetting the official analysis coming from Washington. "...there is a lot of positive change coming from Iran." he claims.
Jim squarely lays the blame on the British for their Imperial invention of the passport and for the subsequent regulation of immigration by Government bureaucrats worldwide. His prediction is that in some parts of the world passports will not manage to stop the changing of borders.
He talks of countries where he likes to invest and economies that he believes are on the verge of collapse. Which ones are those? Well, let's say I don't expect he will be a best selling author in Moscow.
Jim Rogers will probably not be officially proclaimed as prophet any time soon, but I know there will be people who will quote passages of the Adventure Capitalist for the years to come.
