Always Been Mine (The Moreno Brothers 2) Review

When I was reading reviews for this book, I wanted to know how it compared to Forever Mine (The Moreno Brothers 1). Here are my thoughts....
This book was definitely more "steamy." It's for mature teens or adults. I loved it.
There were more twists in this book that were action based, so you get more of a variety.
The ending is better in my opinion... you have a better understanding of what will happen next.
This book was more relatable. It has a bunch of different perspectives.
I felt the need to scream at the characters more in this book; the author does a great job of showing perspective.
Although I ABSOLUTELY LOVED Forever Mine, this book appealed to me more. Both are five stars. (: I hope they help you. Buy this book. It's totally worth it.(:

Ryan's Return Review

Ryan's Return is a wonderful book, a hard one to put down. Barbara Freethy tells a story of a family torn apart by scandals and secrets that can only be reunited with love. There is the story of Ryan, the town's "bad boy" and his attraction with Kara, a good girl. A secondary love story is included, with Andrew, Ryan's brother. This novel tells a story of a father who can never stop loving his younger son. Brothers once close, now seperated by misunderstanding. Its a tale of forgiveness, forgiving once parents, children, and girlfriends for the sins in their pasts. Its a tale of rising river, the fathers loves of that rushing water and Ryan's fear of the same river that makes his father and brother complete. Ms. Freethy employs the use of comic relief in this heavely emotional story. One example is the fist fight Andrew and Ryan get into that lands them in jail. Read it and I garantee that you won't be able to put it down.

Destined (Dream Realms Trilogy, #2) Review

I reviewed the first book, shattered, and even though i really enjoyed the story, i only gave it four stars. i wished that we got to see more of a background about the characters, and a deeper look into the dream world. well, this book definitely delivers! you can see how miss sharp has progressed as a writer since the first book, and we get more interesting, more detailed looks at the characters. plus, there is the introduction of a few new characters who i absolutely LOVED and can't wait to see more of.
my only complaint, really, is that I can't believe this is only a trilogy. i wish it were longer! it'll be very intersting to see how everything wraps up by the third book.
(PS: even if you has reservations about buying this one after reading shattered, i say GO FOR IT! this really is a better book than the first one)

A Knight in Central Park Review

This was a funny and entertaining read. Joe (the Hero) is awesome, funny, quirky and cute. Even now I giggle remembering some of his (mis)adventures. The Heroine is Alexandra and I liked her (especially in the beginning of the book) but I felt that I would've liked to have gotten to know her better. I didn't find this book at all predictable (beside the basic expected HEA) and I really enjoyed the secondary characters, notably Garrett and Sebastiano. You have to give this book a chance, it's definitely worth it.
I purchased this book for .99 cents on my Kindle, great bargain, definitely worth more!

A Knight in Central Park Overview

The year is 1499. As Alexandra Dunn's farmhouse is set ablaze, her grandfather places precious stones in her palm, telling her she has until the next full moon to return with a hero...a brave, chivalrous knight to help save her family. Familiar objects become a blur as she is swallowed in darkness. Suddenly Alexandra is standing in the middle of Central Park, but she has no time to ponder on the wondrous powers of the stones or the amazing sights before her...she must find a hero before all is lost. Joe McFarland would be the first to admit that he's far from hero material'definitely not the man she's looking for. A firm believer of quietude and non-violence, he avoids conflict at all costs. At thirty-four, he is one of the younger Professors at NYU where he lectures and teaches History: The High Middle Ages. Joe's main goal in life is to gain membership into the Medieval Academy, a highly distinguished group of archaeologists and historians. He believes membership will bring him respect and recognition'but what he really wants is to be reunited with his father; a man who has spent his entire life searching for the Black Knight, the last of the medieval knights.Joe's organized, well-structured life begins to unravel the moment he meets Alexandra Dunn. He figures she majored in medieval history before going off the deep end'until days later when he is miraculously transported through time, to 1499 England. Dressed in Dockers and a button down shirt, Joe thought he was ready for anything...anything but this! An armored man with a very authentic looking broadsword is about to strike him down. With only nail clippers and a Bic to defend himself, Joe has no time to think about such an implausible phenomenon as traveling through time'not if he wants to live to see another day.390 pagesABOUT THE AUTHORTheresa Ragan is a member of The Golden Network and the Sacramento Chapter of RWA. Theresa has garnered six Golden Heart nominations in Romance Writers of America's prestigious Golden Heart Competition for her work. AUTHOR REVIEWSTheresa Ragan does it again! A KNIGHT IN CENTRAL PARK is a delightful roller coaster ride through medieval time, which kept me laughing while wondering how in the world it was going to end. Sir Joe is every woman's dream. He'll win your heart with his modern day antics, as well as overcoming every obstacle as he rescues the heroine's sister. If you enjoy being swept away by characters that will stay with you for days, I highly recommend this read. --Caroline Fyffe, award winning author of WHERE THE WIND BLOWS and MONTANA DAWN

A Summer Folly Review

I really thought this book was adorable.. It reminded me of the Jane Austen classic, Persuasion. The chemistry between the couple was top-notch, and I found myself smiling throughout. I was really rooting for them! I read Mary Kingsley's zebra romances in the past, and I am happy to find some of them available for kindle. I hope this author continues to write enjoyable regency romances!

A Summer Folly Overview

An Alluring Widow...When the dashedly handsome Duke of Tremont summoned Anne Templeton home to England, the lovely young widow left Jamaica with a wary sigh. Seven years before, as a foolish green girl, she had jilted Giles Templeton in favor of his cousin. Now she was forced to face the man she'd so grievously wounded...and so dearly loved. The worst of it was, she loved Giles still. But he was so frightfully proper now, with nothing boyish or trusting in his cool, gray eyes. He was undoubtedly in need of a woman's care-and this summer at the seaside, Anne meant to see he had it!...A Proper Gentleman...It had seemed a simple enough thing to do, taking charge of his late cousin's affairs. Giles was, after all, the head of the family. But as soon as he looked into Anne's vibrant blue eyes, he knew there was nothing simple about his feelings for her. More beautiful than ever, she was just the sort of woman who would turn a man's well-ordered life upside down. Well, he was beyond that sort of thing. After their summer at Brighton, he could say goodbye to Anne...but not before giving her a taste of what she'd missed!...And Love That Never DiedAnne's mischievous young son, a prankster of a ghost, and Giles's stubborn mother conspire to make life difficult. But when summer's over, will Anne and Giles find that what seems like folly is very wise, indeed?"Bringing an added depth and texture to her richly drawn characters, Ms. Kingsley proves herself to be an author of considerable merit who is not afraid to spread her wings and fly." Romantic Times, 4 1/2 stars

Barely Proper Review

Here's what I enjoy most about Regency romances written by Shannon Donnelly: she always takes the time to develop her characters, their relationships and the various settings. And with "Barely Proper" these three strengths melds together to give a somewhat much used plot premise a wonderful new lease on life.
Terence Winslow has always been a scapegrace, in and out of trouble either because of his gambling or his womanizing. So it should have come as no surprise to him that he's now been challenged to a duel by Lord Dunscombe for his affair with Lady Dunscombe. Except that when he arrives at the agreed upon spot, he finds that Dunscombe's been shot in the back. The next thing he knows, Terence is facing a charge of murder. Unable to believe his infernal luck, Terence knows that he has to somehow discover who really murdered Dunscombe before charges are formally placed against him. Fortunately for him, his neighbour and friend, Sylvain, is at hand, willing to help. Sylvain knows full well exactly what Terence is capable of, and shooting someone in the back is definitely not one of them. And she's determined to help Terence clear his name. But Sylvain has also long nursed a secret love for her neighbour. And she cannot help but fear what will happen if Terence guesses her secret...
"Barely Proper" rounds off the trilogy that focuses on the Harwood sisters and the Winslow brothers. All three novels feature stories that are not really startlingly new; on the other hand all three novels make for worthwhile reading because of the manner in which Shannon Donnelly tells her tales. In "Proper Conduct" the manner in which the authour draws into the shabby genteel world of the three Harwood sisters who are on the verge of spinsterhood because of their father's folly -- the relationship between the sisters and how each sister's character has been shaped by their circumstances -- was what made reading "Proper Conduct" such fun. Ms Donnelly did the same with "Proper Mistress" -- only this time she drew us into the world of the Winslow brothers, showing us how life with a perpetually angry and judgemental father had made the two brothers rather wild, and how the younger Winslow brother (Theo) is able to change thanks to love and acceptance of his "improper" fiancee. With "Barely Proper" she does for Terence what she did for Theo in "Proper Mistress" -- allowing for Terence to redeem his character and to become to individual he was meant to be. Discovering who the actual murderer was and exonerating himself of the murder charge was only incidental to the main focus of this novel which was all about how Sylvain and Terence act on the feelings they have for each other and how Terence changes most of his scapegrace ways.
With an intelligent story, engaging characters and a good prose style, "Barely Proper" turned out to be a truly enjoyable read.

Vampire Moon (Vampire for Hire #2) Review

Great next installment in the Vampire for Hire series. The author keeps developing the storyline around Sam's family, as well as with her friends (werewolf, fang, etc). Although this book seemed short, and left me wanting to see where Sam goes with Werewolf Boy...it was well written, and I'm definitely pre-ordering the next one!
I am definitely frustrated with the ending!! I don't think I can wait until next April to find out Fang's identity....I've got a few guesses though...

Vampire Moon (Vampire for Hire #2) Overview

Mother, wife, private investigator...vampire. Six years ago federal agent Samantha Moon was the perfect wife and mother, your typical soccer mom with the minivan and suburban home. Then the unthinkable happens, an attack that changes her life forever. And forever is a very long time for a vampire. Now in VAMPIRE MOON, sequel to MOON DANCE, private investigator Samantha Moon finds herself hunting down a powerful crime lord and protecting an innocent woman from her ruthless ex-husband - all while two very different men vie for her heart. And as the stakes grow higher and her cases turn personal, Samantha Moon will do whatever it takes to protect the innocent and bring two cold-blooded killers to justice - her own brand of justice.**Acclaim for the Novels of J.R. Rain**"Gripping, adventurous, and romantic - J.R. Rain's The Lost Ark is a breakneck thriller that traces the thread of history from Biblical stories to current-day headlines. Be prepared to lose sleep!"-JAMES ROLLINS, international bestselling author of Altar of Eden and The Doomsday Key"I enjoyed this immensely. The protagonist, Samantha Moon, is a female vampire with a husband and children. Those predate her condition; six years ago she was attacked by a vampire and rendered into one. Now she's trying to carry on with family and private eye business, and she's a feisty, skilled person, so is doing mostly okay. It is not a horror story; she buys animal blood to eat and doesn't generally prey on humans. But her husband has an increasing problem with her coldness - not of spirit, but of body. 'You sicken me and scare the hell out of me,' he tells her. 'And when I touch you it's all I can do to not gag.' She replies, 'Words every wife wants to hear.' I love this! What makes it special are her character and nature."-PIERS ANTHONY, New York Times bestselling author of A Spell for Chameleon and On A Pale Horse"Dark Horse is one of the best books I've read in a long time! Succubus Blues Review

Honestly, when "Succubus Blues" arrived on my review stack, I was worried. It looked good, but it also raised a few warning flags; this could, I thought, be another lascivious sex romp disguised as urban fantasy/horror, proving little more than an excuse to have demons and other supernatural creatures get naked and sweaty with lustful mortals.
I was pleasantly surprised, however, to find relatively little graphic sex -- apart from a few torrid scenes here and there, and one opening encounter that will bring joy and hope to basement-dwelling ubergeeks everywhere. "Succubus Blues" is a very good novel, featuring (obviously) an "alluring, shape-shifting demon who seduces and pleasures mortal men." In exchange for their souls, of course, but Georginia Kincaid apparently makes that little trade quite worthwhile in her Seattle stomping grounds.
Georgina's life is troubled, because she can get all the sex she wants but love and romance are largely denied her. Carnal acts -- even really good kisses -- steal life force away, and while Georgina is immortal, it doesn't serve well to deplete and kill the men she loves. So she leads an emotionally vacant life, supplementing her nocturnal duties with a more mundane job as an assistant bookstore manager, hanging out when time allows with a couple of vampire pals, a demon or two and even the occasional angel. Technically, succubi are evil, but Georgina doesn't get too involved with the politics of her job.
But then someone starts killing the people around her, and Georgina finds bigger issues to deal with than romance. Is it an amateur vampire slayer, inspired by the exploits of a popular TV heroine, or is something more sinister at work? And what's a poor succubus to do when the doors of both Heaven and Hell close on her cries for assistance?
Figures that Georgina would suddenly find, not one, but two romantic possibilities in her life.
"Succubus Blues" is a damn fine first book, and Mead can be proud to make such a bold stride into the market. Her protagonist is sexy, appealing, smart and resourceful, but amped-up sensuality isn't much use against the thing stalking the streets of Seattle.
The book is hardly action-packed; Mead moves the story along slowly, spending more time on characters than plot, so adrenaline junkies may be bored. That's a shame, because the characters are extremely well-developed, and the action she provides is certainly worth the wait. Sexaholics may want to avoid this one, too; the sex in this book is mostly of the "tease and titillate" variety, not the graphic stuff you'd expect if Georgina's cleavage-baring dress on the cover was cut just a little lower. The denouement, while not too hard to spot well in advance, is still grist for one good read with plenty left over for a sequel.
by Tom Knapp, Rambles.(n e t) editor

Succubus Blues Overview

When it comes to jobs in hell, being a succubus seems pretty glamorous. A girl can be anything she wants, the wardrobe is killer, and mortal men will do anything just for a touch. Granted, they often pay with their souls, but why get technical? But Seattle succubus Georgina Kincaid's life is far less exotic. At least there's her day job at a local bookstore-free books; all the white chocolate mochas she can drink; and easy access to bestselling, sexy writer, Seth Mortensen, aka He Whom She Would Give Anything to Touch but Can't.But dreaming about Seth will have to wait. Something wicked is at work in Seattle's demon underground. And for once, all of her hot charms and drop-dead one-liners won't help because Georgina's about to discover there are some creatures out there that both heaven and hell want to deny'"Mead cooks up an appetizing debut that blends romantic suspense with a fresh twist on the paranormal."--Booklist"The mix of supernatural mystery, romance and reluctant succubus is great fun." --Locus"An engaging read."--Jim Butcher, New York Times bestselling author

The Queen's Lady Review

I'm a big fan of Judith Merkle Riley and Susan Wiggs, and I took notice when I saw their blurbs on the cover of "The Queen's Lady." However, I have been told since that a lot of times writers are paid up front for blurbs, without having read the book in question. I certainly hope that's the case for Ms. Riley and Ms. Wiggs, because the "Lady" really is a tramp, and not worth your hard-earned dollars. If you must read it, check it out at the library, but don't say I didn't warn you.
There's no shortage of plot- in fact, there's too much of it. The novel lurches from incident to incident, and comes across like a creepy hybrid of "A Man for All Seasons" and Paul Verhoeven's "Flesh and Blood." Honor Larke, the "heroine"- and I use the term loosely- is set upon by disaster after disaster within the first few chapters, including being orphaned, kidnapped, raped, and having her inheritance stolen from her. She manages to become Sir Thomas More's ward, and although she thinks More is the best daddy she ever had, he has the hots for her. She kind of has the hots for him too, but before we are subjected to a scene of them in bed together, she finds out he was the guy responsible for burning her best friend at the stake (which is described in disgusting detail). I guess that's kind of understandable why that would sour things.
Anyway, Honor decides that she must become the Savior of the Lutherans, and runs around rescuing Lutherans from being arrested (sort of like a Scarlet Pimpernel in a farthingale, I suppose). However, at the same time she's Catherine of Aragon's #1 lady-in-waiting, hence the title. Yet Honor decides that she must bring Protestantism into England, that Queen Cathy is cool and all, but she must sacrifice her friend to the greater good of routing the Evil Catholic Church from Old Blighty's shores; and part of that entails buddying up with Thomas Cromwell and doing her best to forward Anne Boleyn's ambitions. I found it amusing, in a way, that this scheming, backstabbing character had the name of "Honor," but no one in the book comments on the irony of that. I also found it amusing that she's able to do all of this, without her guardian More having a clue as to what she's up to. Does this guy live in a cave, or what? If he's so crazy about her as we're led to believe, wouldn't he be keeping tabs on what she's doing?
Most of the book is concerned with Honor rushing hither and thither, rescuing Protestants while she talks about how much she hates More. There's a romantic interest, some guy named Richard Thornleigh, who's saddled with a crazy wife who dies conveniently. Honor is such an awesome gal that she proposes to Richard two days after his wife kicks it, even though he protests that his wife died only two days before. But she exclaims that she's dead, they're alive, that they must live for today, etc. Of course, we are supposed to believe that Honor is assertive and filled with joie de vivre or something, and not a callous, manipulative bitch. I am sure the author means well, but the characterization is really very poorly done.
It just gets worse as the book goes along. Honor gets into Big Trouble and has to flee the country to Germany, where she ends up in Munster, among a commune of lunatic Anabaptists. The book actually gets quite interesting here, because this a time and place you never see in historical fiction. But after a great deal of excitement, Honor realizes that religion sucks, there is no soul, and GOD IS A LIE! It is all absolutely as subtle as a brick hurled through a stained glass window, and I threw the book against the wall at that moment. I hate books with an agenda, and the author of "Lady" shoves hers down your throat.
The ending of the book comes pretty quickly after that, with our hero and "heroine" galloping off into the sunset (but not before a final confrontation with Sir Thomas More, who gropes her, wallows in his own misery, and hallucinates the "imaginary" heavens, to show us what a pathetic, screwed-up martyr he is). I have never felt that strongly about More, but I am offended Ms. Kyle feels it necessary to trash the man and his beliefs, just to make those of her heroine (and presumably, her own) look better.
She does try to assert in the end that More's immortality lies not in his obviously wrong Catholic faith, but in his brilliant book "Utopia." If it is true that one's immortality depends upon on the quality of the books one leaves behind, then I'm afraid that Ms. Kyle is clearly doomed, as "The Queen's Lady" is trash. Avoid at your own peril. There are many other books by Judith Merkle Riley and Susan Wiggs to read instead.

The Queen's Lady Overview

London, 1527. Marry or serve: for Honor Larke, the choice is clear. Unwilling to perish of boredom as an obedient wife, she leaves the home of her ward to attend Her Majesty, Queen Catherine of Aragon. But life at Henry VIII's court holds more than artifice for an intelligent observer, and Honor knows how to watch--and when to act...Angered by the humiliation heaped upon her mistress as Henry cavorts with Anne Boleyn and presses Rome for a divorce, Honor volunteers to carry letters to the Queen's allies. It's a risky game, but Honor is confident--until she's proven wrong by dashing courtier Richard Thornleigh--a man who awakens her heart, and who also has something to hide. . .. Swept into a tide of intrigue and danger that stretches across Europe, the Queen's lady is about to learn everything: about pride, passion, greed--and the conscience of the King... "Weaves a fast-paced plot through some of the most harrowing years of English history." --Judith Merkle Riley"Excellent, exciting, compellingly readable." --Ellen Jones"Riveting, heady, glorious, inspired." --Susan Wiggs Includes a Reading Group Guide!

Devil to Pay Review

Blake's life is a living hell, possessed by a demon who has turned Blake into a killer, Blake knows that he must die so that the demon will never hurt anyone again, but with the demon calling the shots it's not going to be easy. When loner vampire Elise witnesses Blake's suicide attempt, the hopelessness of his situation stirs her long lost humanity and as Elise gets to know Blake and is touched by his selflessness, Elise discovers that even though she's immortal, by isolating herself to protect her heart from further hurts, she's forgotten how to live.
Set in the Night Huntress world, with a short appearance by Cat and Bones and a longer one by Mencheres, Devil to Pay works much better on its own than it did sandwiched in between regency romances in it's original release in Four Dukes and a Devil. Storywise, Devil to Pay manages to get the job done even in the shorter space, the leads are both likable and sympathy stirring, and there's nothing like impending death to spur a relationship along. I liked the ending but wouldn't have minded getting to bask in the afterglow of the happily ever after just a bit - but then that's the nature of shorts.
On the whole, Devil to Pay ends up being a nice little tidbit for Frost fans who missed it in its first incarnation, but Frost brings in just enough of her world so that the story will still work for fans-to-be.

Declaring Spinsterhood Review

What if people were truly rational and always made good choices without having to go through all the messiness of EXPERIENCE and real life. Could we just skip the embarrassment, please? No, thank you. That would eliminate all the fun of observing the characters in Jamie Lynn Braziel's Declaring Spinsterhood as they stumble and fumble through the same kind of experiences that we survived, or fervently hope we will survive. Whether the reader identifies with the delightful but confused Emma or steadfast (and confused) Brian or even Emma's mother (who wants Emma to be happy in the socially approved manner) this well written and delightful journey through the hazards of misreading other people as well as ourselves is fun to read and experience. Braziel has produced a book that is lucidly written with a clear understanding of human strengths and a generous dollop of forgiveness for human frailties.

Declaring Spinsterhood Overview

Product DescriptionEmma Bailey is thirty years old and single. No problem for her, but a point of round-the-clock contention for her mother, her family, and too many of her friends. In Jamie Lynn Braziel's Declaring Spinsterhood, the terminal illness known as "old maid" is explored from every angle, and the result is a compassionate, compelling, and wickedly funny novel. Emma may stand up before all and declare her intention to never marry, but what about that little place in her heart reserved for Brian Davis? Sure, Brian's seeing someone, and Emma is not a vixen who breaks up relationships, but would it be so terrible if Brian returned the interest? Rather than bide her time, Emma dates'and dates. Some of the men are charming, others less so. With her vow of spinsterhood more a noose than a friend, Emma musters her courage and moves on. That is, until the unforeseen throws up the biggest obstacle of her life: love.About the AuthorBorn in Fort Worth, Texas, Jamie Lynn Braziel attended Southeastern Oklahoma State University, where she majored in English and minored in French. A financial analyst, the author is working towards a master's degree in accounting.

American Vampire (Vampire for Hire #3) Review

It wasn't a short book but it was so good I couldn't put it down and now I have to wait for the next one. It seems like I waited forever for this book to come out, but i read it in one sitting. I loved the book though and cant wait to read the next one and find out what happens with Sam and Fang.

American Vampire (Vampire for Hire #3) Overview

American Vampire - the third book of the Vampire for Hire Series...Mother, wife, private investigator...vampire. Six years ago federal agent Samantha Moon was the perfect wife and mother, your typical soccer mom with the minivan and suburban home. Then the unthinkable happens, an attack that changes her life forever. And forever is a very long time for a vampire. Now in AMERICAN VAMPIRE, sequel to VAMPIRE MOON, private investigator Samantha Moon receives a heartbreaking phone call from a very unlikely source: a five-year-old girl who's been missing for three months. Now on the hunt, Samantha will use her considerable resources - including her growing supernatural abilities - to locate the missing girl before it's too late. And as she gets closer and closer to the horrible truth, she receives devastating news on the home front. Now with her world turned upside down, Samantha Moon is forced to make the ultimate choice of life and death. And through it all, she discovers the identity of one mysterious man...a man she has grown to love.**Acclaim for the Novels of J.R. Rain**"Gripping, adventurous, and romantic - J.R. Rain's The Lost Ark is a breakneck thriller that traces the thread of history from Biblical stories to current-day headlines. Be prepared to lose sleep!"-JAMES ROLLINS, international bestselling author of The Devil Colony"I enjoyed this immensely. What makes it special are her character and nature."-PIERS ANTHONY, New York Times bestselling author of Trail Mix: Amoeba"Dark Horse is one of the best books I've read in a long time! A great classic detective story with a modern twist. Unique and interesting characters (I think I'm half in love with Jim Knighthorse now!), a great plot that kept me guessing until the end, and some of the funniest lines I've read anywhere."-GEMMA HALLIDAY, bestselling author of Deadly Cool"Impossible to put down. J.R. Rain's Moon Dance is a fabulous urban fantasy."-APRIL VINE, author of Intrigue In India"Moon Dance is absolutely brilliant!"-LISA TENZIN-DOLMA, author of Understanding the Planetary Myths"J.R. Rain is the new modern master of vampires."-H.T. NIGHT, bestselling author of The Werewolf Whisperer "I love Jim Knighthorse! Please write faster, Mr. Rain!"-ELAINE BABICH, #1 bestselling Kindle author of Falling Down"Moon Dance is a must read. If you like Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum, bounty hunter, be prepared to love J. R. Rain's Samantha Moon, vampire private investigator."-EVE PALUDAN, author of Letters from David"I totally loved The Body Departed. As someone who communicates with those who are either earthbound or have crossed over - your descriptions and interpretations of the dialogue and circumstances could not have been written more accurately."-JULIE BELMONT, author of The Path to Personal Success and Freedom"I thoroughly enjoyed The Vampire With the Dragon Tattoo from one of my favorite authors. Good Girls Don't (Donovan Family) Review

Coming off a string of Mary Poppins heroines ("practically perfect in every way"), it was refreshing to read about a young woman who made mistakes. Some BIG ones! Some writers would have presented Tessa in a way that made me hate her, but Dahl made me like Tessa and empathize with her even when I wanted to shake her. Several times in this book, I felt like shouting, "No, don't do it!" as one does watching characters in horror movies. But I understood the character's insecurity enough that I believed she would make those bad choices.
From the beginning of the book, I liked the hero. Luke is a good guy, taking heat for things that other people think he did wrong; I really admired him for keeping his mouth shut when defending his reputation would potentially make someone else look bad. (Okay, the fact that those secrets make him a little bit dark and brooding was also hot.)
The best thing about this book, something I see a lot in Dahl's work, is that the characters grow, and they do it because of each other. That makes for great romance. Watching Tessa learn from her bad choices, neither quickly nor easily, was terrific. I have known people who lie to protect themselves and others, who do stupid things to try and preserve family harmony, and who have a very hard time trusting other people to handle the truth and stick out the tough times. Those are behavior patterns that aren't easily broken, so it rang absolutely true to me that Tessa kept digging herself in deeper rather than reforming too quickly.
The sibling dynamic in this book is fun, which set up the rest of the trilogy in a way that didn't feel forced or artificial. There is a nice overall plot-and-character arc within the family that works out over all three books, and it's the kind of complex family drama that shouldn't be too easy to fix. I really liked how this first book got so far and no further in that respect; it's more believable to me that established family dysfunction doesn't get fixed by the introduction of one wise outsider and a couple of honest conversations.
My reaction makes the book sound heavy, and there are definitely some big emotions at work here, but there are also moments in the book that are laugh-out-loud funny. Dahl has a real knack for situational humor, especially where sex is involved, and she makes effective use of the comic potential generated by a sexually active woman with two over-protective and somewhat clueless older brothers. That made this a well-rounded and enjoyable read for me.

Good Girls Don't (Donovan Family) Overview

Too much of a good thing...With her long ponytail and sparkling green eyes, Tessa Donovan looks more like the girl next door than a businesswoman—or a heartbreaker. Which may explain why Detective Luke Asher barely notices her when he arrives to investigate a break–in at her family's brewery. He's got his own problems—starting with the fact that his partner, Simone, is pregnant and everyone thinks he's the father.Tessa has her hands full, too. Her brother's playboy ways may be threatening the business, and the tension could tear her tight–knit family apart. In fact, the only thing that could unite the Donovan boys is seeing a man come after their "baby" sister. Especially a man like Luke Asher. But Tessa sees past the rumors to the man beneath. He's not who people think he is—and neither is she.

Shattered Dreams Review

I am a little torn with this review - between 3 ½ and 4 stars.
Lady Elyssa Prescott has a limp from a childhood accident and is painfully aware of her `imperfection' thanks to the reaction of `society'. Her siblings are fiercely protective of her and want her to be happy. Her sisters create a correspondence romance, realise it is a mistake and then Elyssa's brother Harrison decides to distract her by inviting someone to charm her for a 2-week party at their country estate.
He calls upon an old school friend with a reputation for the ladies, Brentan Montgomery, Earl of Charfield and offers him a foal from one of his Arabian horses for simply escorting his sister socially - warning him to keep proper distance.
Before the ploy can even begin Brent meets Elyssa out riding and is enthralled by her. She is an outstanding rider and shares his love of horses. His attraction is genuine and he truly sees her wonderful qualities. For the first time in her life, she is made to feel desired and attractive. However, the agreement with her brother hangs in the air above them like a hatchet waiting to fall.
Alongside the development of their story, there is a parallel story of Harrison and Lady Cassandra. They meet again after 4 years, following a terrible scandal and betrayal, only to realise that they were unwilling pawns in a game and so much time has been lost. Real danger now puts all of their lives at stake.
I liked the story and very much liked the 2 main characters, but the secondary plot could have been a story in its own right.
Overall a good read, but not quite up there for a 5 star rating.

Shattered Dreams Overview

Brentan Montgomery, Earl of Charfield has one love - his stable of Arabian horses. When he is offered breeding rights to the Marquess of Fellingsdown's prize Arabian, El Solidar, if for two weeks he acts as companion to Fellingsdown's sister, he doesn't care if the reclusive Lady Elyssa has three chins and a dozen hairy moles, the prize at the end is worth anything he has to endure. But when he meets the elusive Lady Elyssa Prescott, all thoughts of gaining a prize Arabian colt disappear. He realizes he's met the woman of his dreams - if only he can keep her from discovering the deceit that brought them together and convince her that her imperfections don't matter to him. Lady Elyssa Prescott knows what it's like to be ridiculed and shunned. But when Brent Montgomery lets her glimpse a world where her limitations aren't important, she believes it's possible for her dreams to become a reality. Until she discovers the man with whom she's fallen in love was ‘hired' to offer her everything she's always dreamed of having. The cruel reality of a love built on deceit shatters both their dreams and threatens to destroy their lives forever.

The Evil Inside (Krewe of Hunters) Review

This was actually a pretty creepy read! It's a total whodunit though and a mass-market paperback thriller. If you don't like that type of thing, then don't bother reading, BUT I actually really enjoy most of Heather Graham's books because I enjoy her settings. She often writes about New Orleans and the Florida Keys. This time the setting was Salem, Massachusetts during the Halloween season. Pretty cool. They had fortune tellers and Wiccans and people dressed up in costumes. It just created a really great atmosphere.
Let's be honest though. No one reads Heather Graham thinking they are going to read a Booker or Pulitzer prize nominee. This book was decent and fun and a whole lot cliche. But it is totally a guilty pleasure of mine. Every now and then you have to read a book like this that's not so serious and just a whole lot of fun.
The one thing I can say though was that the villain was a little hard to pick out of a line-up. There were a lot of possibilities, but none that I was totally sure of. Most of the time I take a guess and I end up being right, but not this time. That I enjoyed very much.
I liked the characters, but I didn't love them. And I have to tell you, this is the first book in this series I have read. So it's possible that I missed some of the back story and character development from the earlier books. I do plan to read them though, at some point.
The Evil Inside was a fun and fast read, and if you haven't read a Heather Graham novel before, I suggest you give one a chance if you are looking for the perfect guilty pleasure beach read. It makes a great fall read too.

Snapped Review

I first met Jonah and Sophie in Unforgivable and there was some definite sparks there so I couldn't wait to read their story. I was also very intrigued by the school shooting premise. The whole time I was reading, I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next--I wasn't sure where the author will take the story especially after the shooter shot himself in chapter three. But take it she did and after the highly charged beginning, I was at the edge of my seat the whole entire time.
The characters (main and secondary) were fantastic. But the character that stood out for me was Sophie who was very smart, stubborn and independent. Usually, stubborn and independent heroines tend to irritate me because most knowingly put themselves into stupid situations. Not Sophie. Danger seemed to find her. This girl went through a lot--from being being abducted in Unforgivable to being caught in the middle of a school shooting to realizing that someone was trying to kill her (after she was ran off a cliff and narrowly escaping her car in which the villain had planted a bomb). I knew and understood where she was coming from and why she did what she did. Jonah was great as well and he had his own issues, mainly fighting his intense attraction to Sophie who was convinced that the shooter may have an accomplice. He knew what Sophie had gone through and he didn't want to take advantage of her. She was also a key witness in his case. There is a reason why Ms. Griffin is my go-to author for romantic suspense and it's because she can write a darn good romance amid all the action and suspense--she balances the suspense and the romance so well. There was great chemistry between Sophie and Jonah. They were both fighting their feelings for each other for most of the book but when they finally got together, it's genuine and worth the anticipation on my part.
I guess my only complaint was that I felt I didn't get to "know" the villain. I felt he wasn't as sinister as I like my villains to be and he wasn't as well-developed as the shooter. Characters from previous Tracer series books make an appearance (like Ric and Mia from Unforgivable) which I like because you get an update on what they have been doing. New characters were also introduced like workaholic, rookie detective Allison Doyle and I hope she'll have her own book in the future.
Ms. Griffin takes you on a ride filled with twists and turns that will have you guessing until the end. Snapped is a gripping, action-packed, suspenseful and romantic read you won't be able to put down.
4.5 out of 5 stars
**Reviewed by Michelle for Michelle & Leslie's Book Picks blog review.**

Snapped Overview

SOPHIE BARRETT THINKS SHE'S LUCKY TO BE ALIVE. SHE MAY BE DEAD WRONG. On a sweltering summer afternoon, Sophie Barrett walks into a nightmare. A sniper has opened fire on a college campus. When the carnage is over, three people-plus the shooter-are dead and dozens more are injured. Sophie escapes virtually unscathed. Yet as details emerge from the investigation, she becomes convinced that this wasn't the random, senseless act it appeared to be. No one wants to believe her-not the cops, not her colleagues at the Delphi Center crime lab, and definitely not Jonah Macon, the homicide detective who's already saved her life once. Jonah has all kinds of reasons for hoping Sophie is mistaken. Involving himself with a key witness could derail an already messy investigation, not to mention jeopardize his career. But Sophie is as determined and fearless as she is sexy. If he can't resist her, he can at least swear to protect her. Because if Sophie is right, she's made herself the target of a killer without a conscience. And the real terror is only just beginning. . . .

Welcome to Paradise Review

This is the second book I read from this author and the books itself and the stories were good, but the editing can really become annoying. In this book, there are tons of hyphens in between words for no apparent reason. If you can get pass this, then it is a cute story to read. Story is about Chloe who inherited a ranch in Colorado from her grandfather. When she gets there, she was hoping to convert the ranch into a spa, only she didn't expect to find one fine and naked cowboy. Also, the ranch was totally useless, dilapitaded, no power or roads. It wasn't what she was expecting. Zeb needed money so he and his brother could keep the ranch next door running. He had a plan, to offer Chloe a reasonable amount of money for the land so that he could sell it for a profit.
Chloe wanted this to work, she was running away from her old life, her work and her ex-husband. It would be a clean start. Zeb's strategy was to hide the truth from Chloe and convince her to sell to him. He needed her land, but he also needed her, she was beautiful and so attractive he couldn't help himself. It was a long time since Chloe has felt this way, alive, desired. She didn't want to think too much, she wanted to feel. Would they both fall for each other even though they were so different? What would happen when she discovered his lies?
Cute story, if you can ignore the editing issues (typos, misspellings and hyphens). Perhaps the editing issues come from the book being so old, not sure....

Wild Montana Sky (The Montana Sky Series) Review

I have missed good, solid settling the West romances--like the sort written in the '80s and '90s, and was so delighted to find this wonderful romance by Debra Holland.
Elizabeth is basically forced out of her brother's household when he marries a real witch of a woman, and so Elizabeth decides to move to Montana where her best friend lives with her husband and family. A handsome cowboy named Nick, who's been in love with Elizabeth's picture for years, is her traveling companion...but when Elizbeth gets to Montana, she has the surprise of her life when she meets a well-dressed man.
A wonderful story. If you loved Little House on the Prairie and the Wagons West series, as well as the early Linda Lael Miller and Susan Wiggs books, you'll enjoy Wild Montana Sky and, I'm sure, its sequel, Starry Montana Sky.

Wild Montana Sky (The Montana Sky Series) Overview

A "Sweet" Romance set in 1893 Montana With the tragic death of her fiancé, Elizabeth Hamilton believed she'd never love again. The comfortable life she's settled into with her brother in Boston, is upset when he abruptly marries. Displaced by her spiteful new sister-in-law, and hoping to find a home for herself, Elizabeth allows handsome cowboy Nick Sanders to escort her from Boston to her friend's Montana ranch. In Montana, Elizabeth meets attractive Caleb Livingston, a wealthy banker who strongly resembles her beloved fiancé, and believes she has a second chance at love. Yet, she has to fight a growing attraction to Nick. In braving the dangers and hardships of the West, Elizabeth discovers unexpected strengths within herself--strengths tested when an influenza epidemic ravages the town. As a child's life hangs in the balance, Elizabeth must choose between the man who has everything, and the one with nothing but his heart to offer.

Southern Comfort Review

I LOVE Mari Carr and Jayne Rylon books so when I saw they started a series together I knew it was for me. Southern Comfort was a perfect addition to Northern Exposure. The web chat scene between the brothers was priceless so I'm really glad they duplicated it from Seth's point of view. Jody is a sassy headstrong girl with a love for 4 letter cuss words. Seth is dominant and loyal. They agrue and clash but it works for them. I like the humor sprinkled throughout the book. Paul was a great friend and I was glad to see he got a good ending. I can't wait for Eastern Ambition!

Southern Comfort Overview

Caught between desire and a promise'Compass Brothers, Book 2Seth Compton knew from the first that his boss's daughter was all wrong for him. She was too feisty, too damned independent and, at seven years his junior, too damned young. When she comes home with a college diploma and fiancé on her arm, though, he can't quite remember all the reasons he held her at arm's length. It's not just his jeans-tightening reaction to her all-grown-up curves. Something doesn't feel right about her impending marriage, and he won't rest until he's stopped her from making the biggest mistake of her life. The morning after her wild bachelorette party, Jody expected a hangover. The surprise? Waking up tied to a bed with sexy-as-sin Seth. He's got some wild idea about proving they belong together, but she's not buying it. Besides, she has a promise to keep that's too close to her heart to risk, especially not with a man who, until now, made his disinterest plain. No one ever said Seth backed down from a challenge. She's going to make him work for it? No problem. Luckily for him, he has plenty of rope'Warning: This story contains a bondage lovin' cowboy who kidnaps and hogties a cowgirl to his bed and does all sorts of naughty things to her. Fun, right?

Heartwishes Review

I love Jude's Books. The 1st book I read was Knight in Shining Armour and I have not stopped reading them since.
Heartwishes is the story of Gemma a young woman looking to write her diseration on something that has not been done before. When she is told about the job he goes to her professer to turn it down. But when she finds out the details she lusts for the job.
On the other side you have Colin. The sheriff of Edilean. He is a Frazier. And Fraziers dont tell anyone one much about themselves. He doesn't date anyone in town. And SEEMS to have a girlfriend Jean who everyone expects him to marry.
Gemma discovers in the Frazier family papers something called the heartwishes stone. And then anyone connected to the Frazier family starts to get their deepest desires.
Meanwhile Jean's uncle is an International jewel thief who is up to something in Edilean.
The only reason I am not giving this one the 5 stars it deserves is because of the fact hardly anything was really said on the uncle. I would have liked to see more on him.
I am eagerly awaiting to Moonlight in the Morning in December. I am REALLY hoping it is Gemma doctors friend story. His name escapes me at the moment. But he is the SWEETEST man.
Thanks Jude for ANOTHER great read.

The Care and Taming of a Rogue (Adventurers' Club) Review

Suzanne Enoch is a fabulous writer and some of my absolute favorite historical romances have been written by her, namely London's Perfect Scoundrel and Always a Scoundrel, with close second favorites being England's Perfect Hero, By Love Undone, and After the Kiss. Needless to say, I was ecstatic about this book coming out and expected it to join my "all-time favorite" bookshelf - it won't, and frankly, I'm considering whether to post it on PaperBack Swap right away, because I doubt that I will want to reread this.
The Care and Taming of a Rogue (The Adventurers Club, Book 1) wasn't bad in the sense that I didn't actively dislike it, but in almost every aspect it either fell short or just didn't click; it was boring and I was at times somewhat tempted to just put it down and forget about it. The premise was an interesting one and quite original, and I'm always a huge fan of books where the heroine is overlooked, shy, bookish, unusual, whatever. Plus, taking into account it's written by Enoch, it should be a natural five-star book, right? Wrong: THE CARE AND TAMING OF A ROGUE did not live up to my expectations. Both of the main characters were pretty forgettable, their relationship is not compelling and I never really understood how they got together or why they felt (or even THAT they felt) so strongly about one another, and the chemistry just wasn't there (which starkly contrasts with some of Enoch's other books).
SPECIFIC CRITICISMS:
Both Bennett (29) and Phillipa (20) felt somewhat flat and one-dimensional. Bennett is supposed to be this "uncivilized explorer" who won't obey any of London society's "rules" and wants to drag his woman back to his cave ... and although we're told this repeatedly and other characters constantly describe him this way, it didn't really ring true. Yes, he was blustery and aggressive, but it ended up just being annoying and not at all endearing, adventurous, bad-boy-attractive, or any other positive thing; he wasn't as unconventional as he was made out to be (an example of where that type of unconventional adventurer-hero was well done and *did* work is Christina Dodd's Rules of Surrender).
Phillipa is a nice heroine, but nothing to write home about. We're told that she's practical and logical ... but I didn't see that emphasized very much (there was no resemblance to someone like Dr. Brennan from the TV show "Bones," who is definitely an extreme of those two adjectives). She's also supposed to be unconventional in her own way - embracing her "bluestocking" tendencies, completely bookish and somewhat anti-social (though friendly) - yet she insists on Bennett courting her according to the rules and keeps placing emphasis on teaching him how to behave in London society (no such teaching really occurs) ... while then going in broad daylight to the house he's staying in and making love for the first time with him in a kitchen larder (umm, can you say unromantic?).
Then there is their relationship, which seemed completely unsubstantiated to me and so was hard to believe. Basically he hears her voice - is attracted to her, sees her face - likes how she looks, remarks on her smelling of lemons - oh how nice, and bam! they're off. We know that Phillipa already has a little thing for Bennett in that she has been an admirer of his travel/adventure books, but why this romantic interest in Phillipa in particular? We're never really shown why he is THE ONE for her and she is THE ONE for him. [Sidenote: Why is it that aside from our heroines (and whatever friends they may have) almost all the other women in these novels are nitwit chits who only giggle, simper, and are catty when it comes to men??? Even Flip's sister, Olivia, kind of falls into this category - at least for the first two adjectives.] Bennett and Phillipa are both nice people, sure, but I just don't see why their relationship takes off so quickly, with no trouble going from hello to kisses to making love to declaring love to talking about marriage (though actually that happens before some of those other ones) ... which brings me to another point ...
There are no obstacles in their romantic relationship!!! Well save one, to be fair, which was in fact a good one: she likes to stay at home and read, he's Mr. Adventure, so how is a real, lasting relationship (i.e. marriage) going to work for them? This was an interesting twist because it was a real consideration that is similar to the problems that nowaday long-distance relationships face. However during the book it isn't really dissected, just mentioned repeatedly and put aside; then in the end, it's resolved very nicely and quickly (TOO nicely and quickly). Other than that though, which wasn't even fully explored, any hurdles placed by themselves or other characters were either completely missing or not very substantial. I *HATE* books that have those big misunderstandings or throw obstacle after obstacle in front of the main characters for no apparent reason, but can't there be a happy balance between those two extremes??
Finally, the whole "Adventurers' Club" was a little ridiculous and when that's first introduced in the beginning of the book my reaction was "What? This seems very contrived ... Maybe it's going to be made into a series?" ... Which I then discovered it is. I don't understand the purpose of the club, don't see it's use or understand how it works or why it exists, etc. - basically it's all a huge contrivance.
BOTTOM LINE:
I feel very bad about giving such a negative review for a Suzanne Enoch book, but I was so disappointed! She has such talent and has written other novels that literally have me going to sleep with a smile on my face and waking up the next morning wanting to read the book all over again; THE CARE AND TAMING OF A ROGUE in no way compares to those books. There were some funny moments, some sweet ones, Kero (Bennett's pet monkey) was a great addition, but check it out from the library if you're set on reading it, don't buy it.

The Care and Taming of a Rogue (Adventurers' Club) Overview

How to tell if a man is an unrepentant rogue:

1. He has no patience for frivolous debutantes 2. He kisses you after a single dance 3. He makes you forget yourself and kiss him back . . .

After years away from London, Captain Bennett Wolfe is back—and alive, much to Society's surprise. Having been presumed dead, this rugged adventurer is now much sought after by every marriage-minded young woman . . . but Bennett only has eyes for the intriguing Lady Phillipa Eddison.

Phillipa would rather read than flirt, but she does know a thing or two about proper courtship rituals. A gentleman does not kiss a lady senseless, and he certainly does not bring his pet monkey when he comes calling. Lady Phillipa's ever been so scandalized . . . or tempted. She simply must teach Bennett some manners—before she succumbs to temptation as wild as the man who offers it.

With Nicole's dilemma and his hatred for Dominic, Stephan will use Nicole's situation to his advantage.THOUGHTS
This was a wonderful, detailed, and engaging read for me. This story brought out many lovable characters that added to the book. I enjoyed getting to know Stephan's family right down to Jeff, Nicole's limo driver, what a nice guy. Maddy, Stephan's cousin was so nice and sweet as well as an important key in bringing Nicole and Stephan together. I really enjoyed reconnecting with Abby and Dominic again in book 2. We also got to read in-depth why Nicole and Dominic's relationship was the way it is which was good, also an explanation seven years prior on what really happen with the deal between Dominic and Victor, Stephan's father. Stephan and Nicole's relationship was like a roller coaster ride but very entertaining to read as well. Their romance, dare I say felt as though I was watching a movie on the TV channel WE or maybe lifetime while reading and picturing everyone in my head. It was sweet and it had that harlequin presents feel which isn't a bad thing, and probably is a bit better than a HP. If you were a fan of the first book then the author does not disappoint with book2. If you were not a fan then I would still recommend this book to you.
Though Maid for the Billionaire, book 1 is free this book has a reasonable price and worth every penny. As for Jake & Lilly's story, I am going to have serious withdrawal waiting until summer of next year 2012 if I read it correctly for the next book. That is my only disappointment.
Storyline: GOOD
Intimacy: SWEET
Enjoyment: VERY GOOD

The Trouble With Love (Texas One Night Stands) Review

Having read and greatly enjoyed Ms. Reeves' novel, Just One Look, I was looking forward to picking up a copy of her newest book. I was not disappointed. Although The Trouble With Love is laced with humor and sensuality, it's also a poignant tale of forgiveness and redemption and knowing when to let go. Our heroine finds her happily ever after, but not before she faces the ghosts of her past and accepts the future that can be hers. Do yourself a favor; download a copy. You won't be disappointed either.

A Dangerous Compromise Review

As a matter of fact, Clarissa reminds me a great deal of Lydia Bennett of "Pride and Prejudice." (In case you're not a fan, Lydia's the one who ran off with a rake who had to be bribed to marry her.)
Just like Lydia, Clarissa is shatter-brained and totally out of control. She is determined to marry a rake because she wants a Grand Passion. When her friend Jane questions the future faithfulness of a man who has had a lot of mistresses, Clarissa airily replies that Love for her will make him forget all of those women.
Most silly heroines have parents or guardians to keep them in check. This one does not. It really is not surprising that in a fit of pique over the hero's deception (the revelation that he is an honorable man and not a rake), she agrees to become the mistress of one of the worst rakes (who, ironically, becomes the hero of Ms. Donnelly's next book).
What self-respecting hero would run off to rescue such a brainless heroine? At this point, the book became a wall-banger for me.
Somehow, Lydia Bennett never appealed to me as a heroine. "Happy ever after" is much more believable with sensible romantic couples such as Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy.

A Dangerous Compromise Overview

Convinced by her godmother that reformed rakes make the best husbands, the beautiful and willful Clarissa Derhurst is on the hunt for just such a man. Only a rake can give her the passion she needs to keep from becoming a vain, unhappy woman like her mother. But finding the right rake is no easy task. When she meets Lord Wolviston, the ‘lone wolf', she starts to believe he might be able to give her the passion she craves. No other man makes her heart beat so fast. But can she reform his wicked ways-and is she even certain he is all that wicked? After his father's crippling accident, Evan Fortesque became burdened by family responsibilities. Now that his father has passed on, and as the new Lord Wolviston, he's come to London to sow a few belated wild oats. When he overhears that a spoilt beauty won't look twice at a respectable gentleman such as himself, he decides she needs a lesson-and this is just the lark he wanted. He'll pretend to be a rake she won't be able to reform. But instead of finding a vain, silly girl, he starts to glimpse the passionate woman underneath Clarissa's defenses. And then Clarissa attracts a real rake to her side. Now Wolviston must keep Clarissa from being compromised? But how can he do that when he's starting to want to seduce her himself?

Supernatural Review

A trend has been for 3-5 established authors getting together and publishing novella length stories set in 'worlds' already written. I will leave the plot summaries to others as well as the publisher's blurb (too easy for me to give spoilers in the shorter works...), but I would like to point out what I think makes a good entry into this kind of publication.
First, are the authors GOOD? By that I mean is their writing well done enough that they can get a full feel in terms of plot/emotions/characters all compressed into a shorter work. By using characters (new or otherwise) they do have a little easier time, but still it can be difficult to make the reader care when there is less time to set the story.
Second, are the stories good? Kind of the off shoot from number 1...not only are the authors skilled, but do they actually pull it off? Do I care about the characters? Do I care what happens?
Third, if it's a series I've read does the story fit in the context of the series, have the same feel, maybe even pull in a few loose ends?
Fourth, if it's a series I've not read, does the story make sense to me without having read the others? And more importantly, does it make me want to go read the rest of them?
Fifth, are all or most of the stories good enough to give satisfactory answers to the above? Reading an anthology where you only enjoy one or two of the stories is just a disappointment!
Sooo, how did this one do? Of the 4 authors/series I'd only read Larissa Ione's Demonica and Lords of Deliverance series (and somehow I hear banjos when I read that title) which are connected. Her entry here involves a minor character from her Demonica series, but also brings in some history of her Deliverance books (ne-ne ne-ne ne-ner), but we do see some old favorites. I really enjoyed this and felt like it was very well done and loved how it fit with her other works. A+!
Next, I also very, very much enjoyed G. A. Aiken's entry. I've read her work as her alter ego Shelley Laurentson (Magnus Pack, Pride series) and loved those. Now I've had a taste of the GA Aiken/dragons I now have yet another series to add to the top of my 'read this next' list.
The Jacquelyn Frank and Alexandra Ivy stories were also most excellent and also have piqued my interest in the rest of their books as well, just a hair less than Aiken's, but not by much--and others may have different tastes of course.
In other words this anthology met all my requirements--which might actually be a problem because that just added a ton to my reading list.
Highly Recommended!!
