Duo-Tone "Names of Jesus Bible Cover", Medium Review

I don't want to be critical but for book/Bible covers, Med or Large doesn't cut it when I don't see anywhere what the actual size is. I've ordered 2 covers and had to return them at my expense because they didn't fit. Just a suggestion to include that in the title of products would help your customers. Thank you!

NRSV XL with Apocrypha (burgundy) Review

I told myself I would never buy another English Bible, but when I saw this new edition of the NRSV upon its release I knew I had found my next Bible for devotional reading. The NRSV is still the English translation of choice (I say this as a Professor of New Testament and Greek) in terms of the breadth and excellence of translators involved, the avoidance of certain problematic renderings (e.g., resolving "the faith of Christ" as "faith in Christ," as in the NIV), and the attentiveness to inclusive language (though I would have retained the use of kinship language for "brothers" everywhere as "brothers and sisters" rather than "believers," "beloved," or the like). The print layout is superb, and the binding seems sturdy and lays open very well. I would highly recommend choosing THIS edition over the edition lacking the Apocrypha or the "Catholic Edition," which includes most of the Apocrypha but lacks, for example, 3 and 4 Maccabees (included here), essential texts for understanding tensions facing Diaspora Judaism and some of the responses formulated by the faithful to address those tensions. Readers who want access to maps and study helps can still use the aids in the back of the smaller print Bible that they, like me, can't read so well anymore. :) Regarding the appearance, the image shows the Bible as it comes in a cardboard wrap: the front cover is actually solid tan.

Angel: A Maximum Ride Novel Review

After reading this book, I was very disappointed. Disappointed in the writing, the flat characters, and the unsolved romantic issues.
Yes, there were some really good moments. The Gasman and Angel are the only solid characters in the book. They have some new sides to them in this book, and we really get to see them opening up. The new Fang's gang had some quirky personalities that were easy to like and comedic, as well. But that was pretty much all the redeeming qualities of this book.
Max is over-the-top emotional. Yes, I understand her choice is difficult between the love of her life Fang and her meant to be soulmate Dylan, but seriously. Dragging your fans through multiple books of this melodramatic crap is too much.
To Mr. Patterson (and his staff of writers who help him with his novels), cut to the point. Please give your fans one last Maximum Ride book worth reading, like the first three books in the series. Give us our old Max back one last time.

Angel: A Maximum Ride Novel Overview

In the seventh book in the bestselling series, evil scientists are still trying to convince Max that she needs to save the world, this time by providing the genetic link in speeding up the pace of evolution. Worse, they're trying to convince her that her perfect mate is Dylan, the newest addition to the flock. The problem is that, despite herself, Max is starting to believe it. Fang travels the country collecting his own gang of evolved humans, but the two separate flocks must unite to defeat a frightening doomsday cult whose motto is Save the Planet: Kill the Humans. And this time, the true heroine, for once, might just be little Angel.

Knights of the Round Table (A Stepping Stone Book) Review

This is an overly simplistic and poorly written introduction to the Arthur legend. If there weren't many better presentations of these tales for young readers, there might be an excuse for such a substandard rendering. Unless you want your kids to think that writing sentence fragments is preferable to constructing clear complex sentences, you might want to stay away from the entire "Bullseye Step Into Classic" series.

The Lost Symbol (Random House Large Print) Review

I want to be fair to Dan Brown.
Elitist literary critics say that Brown is not a good writer, and that his stories are bland. I personally think that if you manage to genuinely entertain and awe your audiences, then you have accomplished something worthy of reading. I also think that "The Da Vinci Code" was nearly an impossible act to follow. People will have all sorts of crazy expectations for your next book that you won't be able to fulfill. As such, I write this review as fair as I can, trying to assess it on its own merits, but comparisons are inevitable.
The Lost Symbol isn't a bad book, but it is a letdown. I didn't like this one for the same reason I didn't like Angels and Demons as much. Also, Brown doesn't advance the story at a good pace. A good two-thirds of the book (I'm not exaggerating, I counted the pages) was filled with variations on such a scene:
Character A: Have you heard of X?
Character B (usually Langdon): Yes, but I thought that was just a myth.
Character A shows or tells B something.
Character B reacts with shock.
Then, insert scenes of people walking from one place to another, being chased.
Then, insert the sentence "Suddenly everything made sense." At least for the next ten pages.
Repeat.
After reading this, I had to wonder whether Brown is a writer on Lost, where people can't seem to give straight answers, and where scenes never resolve any questions.
Here's my advice to Dan Brown:
1. Fire your editor. There were some whole passages, even chapters, that served no purpose other than to inflate your book to an unnecessary size. I don't mind reading big books, but I do mind reading through unnecessary words. Ch. 69, for example, is unnecessary. If your editor didn't ask you to take it out, then he should be fired. Sorry.
2. We don't need to know exactly how every character moves from one location to the next, which turn they took, what street they walked across. If it serves the plot, if the geography is important (as it was in Angels and Demons), then fine. Geography was crucial at certain moments in this book, but many times, the passages when you describe how someone moves from one part of a house to another part, what door they opened and closed, all that is boring and tedious.
3. Don't write your novel like a screenplay. Whether you've done it consciously or not, your short chapters read as if you had in mind exactly what camera shots you expect out of an inevitable movie adaptation. Leave that to the screenwriter. If they can adapt a book like "Naked Lunch," they can surely adapt your book as well. Write your novel as a novel.
4. Be careful of hubris. You're in a unique and rare position that, I'm sure, many authors dream of: your books will sell millions by default and you will get a multi-million dollar movie deal without question. Good for you! Some authors handle that well (e.g. J.K. Rowling), some don't (e.g. Stephen King, Michael Crichton). It's not that the latter are bad writers, but that they are capable of writing some really bad stuff. Having said that, I'm not saying that The Lost Symbol is bad, just that it needs to lose about 100-pages of unnecessary, repetitive scenes. Speaking of Crichton, the reason I stopped reading him is that he became too formulaic. All his books are about a bunch of mismatched experts going to some remote location and something goes wrong. Formula isn't bad per se. Rowling is formulaic too. Most of her books revolve around the Hogwarts school year, but she puts enough story in there to make it work. You should do more of that.
5. Know what you're good at. You know your technology, which makes your book authentic. You also know that your readers are likely to go Google a painting or artist you mentioned and be awed by what you described. That's great! I bet that also saves you the pain of having to request reprint permissions of artwork and such. Also, since most people don't know their history, let alone the etymology of words they use everyday, you have literally an endless supply of stories. That's what you're good at. I'd say, forget the science stuff. It's interesting, but, as with Angels and Demons, it's an awkward fit. I don't recall there being any modern science in The Da Vinci Code and I was fine with that.
6. Try a recurring character. Langdon is fine, but consider having a character or two that returns in subsequent books. Make them interesting, of course, and don't make them a love interest.
So, here's the good news. Dan Brown hasn't nuked the fridge, at least not for me. Also, now that this book is out in the open, readers are likely to give his next book a much fairer assessment. So, I look forward to reading that, but, I probably won't be buying it on the first day it's out.

Classic Starts: Around the World in 80 Days (Classic Starts Series) Review

The book is an interesting adventure of going around the world without planes, modern communication tools and other conveniences we take for granted. My 7 year old son was very interested in the characters and their progress and motives during their trip. Having read the original version myself, I found this copy very well edited to keep a child engaged and keep the spirit of the story and author.

Race and Prayer: Collected Voices, Many Dreams Review

Collaboratively compiled by Malcom Boyd (Episcopal priest and poet/writer in residence at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul, Los Angeles) and Chester Talon (Bishop Suffragan of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles), Race And Prayer: Collected Voices, Many Dreams consists of dealing with the transformation of anger and impressive and inspiring poems, prayers, and prose frustration to a condition of reconciliation and healing. Enhanced with twelve cartoons by Los Angeles times editorial cartoonist Paul Conrad, Race And Prayer is organized into five sections (Suffering and Anger; Prejudice and Hatred; Diversity; Reconciliation and Healing; Growth in Understanding and Sharing). Race And Prayer is important and highly recommended reading for all Christians regardless of denominational affiliation or background.

Race and Prayer: Collected Voices, Many Dreams Overview

The damage done by hatred and prejudice-based on race, sexual orientation, religion, or gender-runs very deep. The damage done is often invisible, but it simmers beneath the surface anyway. In Race and Prayer, Malcolm Boyd and Chester Talton have collected poems, prayers, and prose that bring the anger and frustration to light, and ultimately, they hope, to a place of reconciliation and healing.Race and Prayer is divided into five sections: Suffering and Anger; Prejudice and Hatred; Diversity; Reconciliation and Healing; and Growth in Understanding and Sharing. Contributors to this collection range in age from teenagers to the elderly, and include men and women from a wide variety of racial and ethnic backgrounds, all of whom speak honestly of their own experiences, heartbreaks, and hopes. Twelve cartoons from three-time Pulitzer Prize winner Paul Conrad, editorial cartoonist at the Los Angeles Times, add to the power of this collection.

In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto Review

What's better for you --- whole milk, 2% milk or skim?
Is a chicken labeled "free range" good enough to reassure you of its purity? How about "grass fed" beef?
What form of soy is best for you --- soy milk or tofu?
About milk: I'll bet most of you voted for reduced or non-fat. But if you'll turn to page 153 of "In Defense of Food," you'll read that processors don't make low-fat dairy products just by removing the fat. To restore the texture --- to make the drink "milky" --- they must add stuff, usually powdered milk. Did you know powdered milk contains oxidized cholesterol, said to be worse for your arteries than plain old cholesterol? And that removing the fat makes it harder for your body to absorb the fat-soluble vitamins that make milk a valuable food in the first place?
About chicken and beef: Readers of Pollan's previous book, "The Omnivore's Dilemma", know that "free range" refers to the chicken's access to grass, not whether it actually ventures out of its coop. And all cattle are "grass fed" until they get to the feedlot. The magic words for delightful beef are "grass finished" or "100% grass fed".
And about soy...but I dare to hope I have your attention by now. And that you don't want to be among the two-thirds of Americans who are overweight and the third of our citizens who are likely to develop type 2 diabetes before 2050. And maybe, while I have your eyes, you might be mightily agitated to learn that America spends $250 billion --- that's a quarter of the costs of the Iraq war --- each year in diet-related health care costs. And that our health care professionals seem far more interested in building an industry to treat diet-related diseases than they do in preventing them. And that the punch line of this story is as sick as it is simple: preventing diet-related disease is easy.
In just 200 pages (and 22 pages of notes and sources), "In Defense of Food" gives you a guided tour of 20th century food science, a history of "nutritionism" in America and a snapshot of the marriage of government and the food industry. And then it steps up to the reason most readers will buy it --- and if you care for your health and the health of your loved ones, this is a no-brainer one-click --- and presents a commonsense shopping-and-eating guide.
If you are up on your Pollan and your Nina Planck and your Barbara Kingsolver, you know the major points of the "real food" movement. But if you're new to this information or are disinclined to buy or read this book, let me lay Pollan's argument out for you:
-- High-fructose corn syrup is the devil's brew. Do yourself a favor and remove it from your diet. (If you have kids, here's a place to start: Heinz smartly offers an "organic" ketchup, made with sugar.)
-- Avoid any food product that makes health claims --- they mean it's probably not really food.
-- In a supermarket, don't shop in the center aisles. Avoid anything that can't rot, anything with an ingredient you can't pronounce.
-- "Don't get your fuel from the same place your car does."
-- "You are what you eat eats too." Most cows end their days on a diet of corn, unsold candy, their pulverized brothers and sisters --- yeah, you read that right --- and a pharmacy's worth of antibiotics. And they bestow that to you. Consider that the next time there's a sale on sirloin.
-- "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." By which Pollan means: Eat natural food, the kind your grandmother served (and not because she was so wise, but because the food industry had not yet learned that the big money was in processing, not harvesting). Use meat sparingly. Eat your greens, the leafier and more varied the better.
In short: Kiss the Western diet as we know it goodbye. Look to the cultures where people eat well and live long. Ignore the faddists and experts. Trust your gut. Literally.
In all this, Pollan insists that you have to save yourself. And he makes a good case why. Our government, he says, is so overwhelmed by the lobbying and marketing power of our processed food industry that the American diet is now 50% sugar in one form or another --- calories that provide "virtually nothing but energy." Our representatives are almost uniformly terrified to take on the food industry. And as for the medical profession, the key moment, Pollan writes, is when "doctors kick the fast-food franchises out of the hospital" --- don't hold your breath.
"You want to live, follow me." I loved it when Schwarzenegger said that in "Terminator." It matters much more when, in so many words, Michael Pollan delivers that same message in "In Defense of Food."

NIV Life Application Study Bible, Large Print, Indexed, Black Review

It's a great bible. It is ironic though that on a "large print" bible, the tabs which made the bible more expensive are very small print so they are pretty much worthless. All in all I am pretty happy with it. I would have preferred a color choice or that at least the listing on amazon would indicate the color, which is black.

The New American Bible Revised Edition, Large Print Edition Review

The NAB-RE Large Print edition from Oxford University Press is a good quality, well printed bible. It has 12 point text for the bible verses and 9 or 10 point for the notes at the end of each book of the bible. The paper is white (but thin enough to allow print from the facing page to be seen). The ink is very dark grey to black so you will get good contrast between print and paper for easy reading.
The Pacific Duvell bound edition (ISBN: 978-0-19-529812-3) has thumb indexing, stitching slightly inset from the cover edges, and it has a soft non-slippery feel. The binding appears to be sewn, so it should be fairly hard wearing. The pages are gilt edged and there's a marker ribbon (black in the tan & blue copy I have).
There are no maps at the back of the book, nor embedded in the text. There is a copy of the Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation (Dei Verbum) at the front of the bible (printed in 12 point with 9 or 10 point notes).
I haven't had time to read the whole of the revised Old Testament, but I can say that the Psalms read well, and on the whole the NAB-RE is a good quality translation for study. The notes at the end of each book allow a reader to treat this bible as a study bible, however I prefer to have the notes at the bottom of each page, so I must mark this edition down slightly for that reason and because of the lack of maps.
At the time I am writing this Amazon's product description is in error (stating that the binding is "leather" when it is in reality "Pacific Duvelle" - a synthetic leather-like binding material).
I recommend this bible for serious bible readers who need reading glasses and also for people who prefer larger type.

The New American Bible Revised Edition, Large Print Edition Overview

The NABRE Large Print Edition is a convenient, large font version of Oxford's popular Catholic Bible. This paperback edition is printed on smooth, durable paper in a clear typeface and easy-to-navigate format. Durable binding, readable type, and affordable value make this a perfect edition for anyone needing a large print version of the NABRE, whether for public reading or personal devotions. Also available in black genuine leather and tan/blue pacific duvelle. The New American Bible Revised Edition:The New American Bible Revised Edition (NABRE) brings to culmination the work of nearly 100 scholars, including translators, editors, and a subcommittee of Catholic bishops who provided extensive review of the biblical text over a period of many years. The NABRE is the first major amendment to the New American Bible translation since 1991. It features: *The first update of the Old Testament since 1970, taking into account recent archaeological and textual discoveries.*Complete revision of the Psalter.

NIV Holy Bible Giant Print Reference Edition Review

I bought this bible for a relative who had trauma to his one good eye. He had a large print that he could read except the red words in the gospels. There was not enough contrast for him. I bought this one because it did not list "Red letter edition" as one of the features. It most definitely is a red letter edition. Happily the text size is big enough for him to read. Even the red is legible to him but it is not as easy to read as the black text.

Coming Prince, The (Sir Robert Anderson Library Series) Review

Sir Robert Anderson, inspector of Scotland Yard, and careful Bible student not only busted The Ripper, but went on to investigate with painstaking care the Great Prophecy of Daniel's 70 hebdomads. With the care and precision of his Scotland Yard background, Anderson reviews the 69 weeks of the Great Prophecy, dots the yods and crosses the tittles (are there such things in Chaldee?) and brings us to a precision rendezvous with the planned (2nd) triumphal entry of the Lord Jesus Christ in the Gospel of Mark as the fulfilment of the 69 weeks.
The great care he takes demonstrates that he was no clergyman, but a real Bible student.
Ignore the man behind the curtain, D. Pentecost could never have done this work. This fellow may be second only to EW Bullinger as a recent and real Bible student.

Living on the Border of the Holy: Renewing the Priesthood of All Review

I am a full-time church musician. More than that, it is my ministry in the church. I've been considering, with the help of my spiritual director whether or not I am called to the ordained ministry. This book helps to re-affirm the meaning of the lay ministry in the church, and sheds new light. It has helped me to discern my own vocation as a lay professional in the church.
My spiritual director asked me, "What does ordination mean, and how would it enhance your ministry?" I read this book and can answer the question now! No other resource is as clear cut.
This book is written by an Episcopal Priest, and while it is oriented toward Episcopalians, it can just as easily apply to people of other parts of Christianity. All people aspiring toward ordained ministry should be required to read this! (...as well as those discerning their commitment to lay ministy in the church.)

ESV Large Print Holy Bible (Black) Review

Other reviewers complained that there are no chapter links. I'm not sure if it is new, but the version I downloaded recently has both book and chapter links. At the main table of contents, there are links to all the books of the Bible in a single list. Once you select a book, the first page of each book has links to all the chapters in that book. It works really well that way. I can find any verse in three clicks. And the whole Bible is searchable. That along with the ESV translation means a great addition to any Kindle.

Encountering Jesus in the New Testament - Student Text Review

The work is well organized. For instance, the book
begins with the Historical Jesus, the New Testament,
the Gospels, Paul's letters, the early Church and
the Jesus of today.
Tacitus verified Jesus' public life during the reign
of Emperor Tiberius. The Evangelist Luke made a
similar verification in Luke 3: 1-2. The New Testament
is the primary source material on Jesus, although the
Old Testament prophecy of Jesus is chilling.
i.e. born in Bethlehem of a virgin and the Resurrection
Specific Aramaic words are traceable to Jesus.
i.e. Abba, Talitha Koum, Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani
The world of Jesus is fascinating for the inclusion of
the Holy Land, Aramaic religious feasts and the
politics of 1st century Palestine.
Jesus utilized the parables to invite the flock to share
in the Kingdom of God. The Church teaching on Mary was
very specific. For instance, Mary conceived by the
Holy Spirit. The book doesn't say so specifically;
however, the Great Fire of Rome 64 AD may have destroyed
much of the official Roman record of Jesus. That
record could have included correlating statements
of public officials about Jesus, real evidence of
artifacts and official documents under the seal of Rome.
The book cites that we should leave the timing of the
end of the world in God's hands. There is an extensive
coverage of the Dead Sea Scrolls in an online reference.
The volume ends with a very extensive index of Scripture
and pertinent references by the author.
The presentation is excellent for a wide constituency
of readers; namely, high school, college and contemporary
religious scholars.

Life Application Study Bible NLT, Large Print Review

This is the NLT2 in Large Print, Black Bonded Leather. Now remember, when you buy this Bible it is no little object. It is over 3100 pages and probably over 4 pounds as well. The print is much, much easier to read than on the normative Life App Bibles. I was hoping this edition would become available in the Tu-Tone leathers(which are soft and beautiful), but evidently there are no plans for such, so the binding is the typical stiff, rough-feeling bonded leather. The print is great, the notes are, too, and it is one very acceptable accurate translation that is easy to read and understand. Enjoy.

Catholic Scripture Study Bible RSV-CE Large Print Review

I was raised Evangelical Protestant and converted to the Catholic Church in 1994. I had been raised with a slew of potential Bible translations and study formats. I am glad to now see the selection growing for Catholics as well. We Catholics have a distinct and historical perspective of studying and interpreting Scripture based on the history and tradition of 2,000 years, initially established and practiced by the very first Christians.
We are grateful to Gail Buckley of Catholic Scripture Study International for providing yet another excellent Catholic Study Bible. It has helpful charts, indexes, maps, quotes and notes. You may notice it is not the cheapest Study Bible on the market but that is due in part to the luxurious and beautiful leather cover. It reminds me of being a boy and proudly holding my father's elegant and supple leather-covered Bible.
You won't be sorry if you add this CSS Catholic Study Bible to your library. Keep readily available on your desk. And it is a good idea to carry it to church with you, to your CSS Bible study, and when you fly on a plane. Good work Gail!

Racing the Enemy: Stalin, Truman, and the Surrender of Japan Review

This is a well written and documented attempt to produce a comprehensive account of Japan's decision to seek peace at the end of WWII. This includes the controversial topic of the importance of American use of nuclear weapons. Since at least one prior reviewer has used the "R" (revisionism) word, let me begin with with some brief historiographic background. Revisionism, unfortunately, is one of those words that has lost specific meaning and become a term of abuse. Any substantial work of historical scholarship presenting new information or a substantial new interpretation, like this one, is revisionist by definition and the mere fact that the author has a new point of view is not an excuse to fling abuse. In the debate over the use of nuclear weapons against Japan, revisionism has a concrete, specific connontation. It is used usually to refer to the work of historians like Gar Alperovits and others who argue that the use of nuclear weapons was unecesary, that the Truman administration knew this, and that bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki was an effort to intimidate the Soviet Union. In this interpretation, the use of nuclear weapons against Japan was the opening salvo of the Cold War, not the conclusion of WWII. Hasegawa is definitely not in this camp and politely, but firmly, consigns the revisionist consigns the revisionist camp to the trash can. The Truman administration employed nuclear weapons with the primary purpose of bringing the war to an end as fast as possible.
The strengths of this book are Hasegawa's description and analysis of the role of the Soviet Union and his attention to the role played by figures, both in Tokyo and Washington, usually regarded as secondary figures. Hasegawa's interpretation is based in part of novel archival research. An important point of departure from what might be called the triumphalist American version that implicitly treats the American decisions as decisive and the Japanese role as essentially reactive. Hasegawa takes pains to emphasize the autonomy of Japanese decision makers. This is not novel. Richard Frank, in his excellent book Downfall, which covers much of the same ground, makes the same point and also emphasizes the autonomy of the Japanese leadership. Hasegawa goes farther than Frank with his extensive description of Soviet diplomacy and the impact of the Soviet decision to enter the war on the Japanese decision to capitulate. Hasegawa makes a strong case that both the Soviet entry and the American use of nuclear weapons were crucial factors in deliberations of the Japanese leadership to end the war. I found this aspect of the book convincing and I think the likely conclusion is that use of nuclear weapons with necessary but probably not sufficient to coerce the Japanese leadership to surrender. In the most controversial aspect of the book, Hasegawa argues that Soviet entry may well have been necessary and sufficient, and that use of nuclear weapons was not needed. This is a major point of difference with Frank, who sees use of nuclear weapons as decisive though he also discusses the importance of the Soviet entry. Hasegawa and Frank's disagreement centers on interpretation of a relatively small number of documents and it is impossible to be sure which is correct, though I find Frank's analysis more convincing. Hasegawa has interesting treatment of the Truman administration, which he presents has more uncertain and divided than usually thought. There is a lot of useful information in these sections of the book. Truman, who had been largely excluded from foreign policy during Roosevelt's life, is presented as periodically indecisive.
An important theme of Hasegawa's interpretation is that the American were willing and did use to bomb to avoid Soviet participation in the occupation of Japan. This is presented reasonably well, but I don't think that Hasegawa does as well as Frank in presenting the secondary reasons why the Truman administration wanted to end the war as quickly as possible. Certainly, they wanted to end the war without an invasion of the home islands. But, they also didn't want to take over a Japan in a state of chaos or given the Soviet behavior in Poland, share occupation with the Soviets. American policy objectives were just not to win the war but to sustain a lasting peace. Occupying a Japan with a functioning cooperative government and without a divided occupation were important goals. Nor, given the clearly duplicitious and aggressive behavior of the Soviets, was it irrational to use the bomb rather than wait to see what would happen after Soviet entry into the war. The Truman administration wanted to conclude the war with a minimum of casulties, to ease the occupation, to eliminate Japanese militarism and imperialism, to be able to democratize Japan, to make Japan a permanent US ally, and to ensure that Japan became an important member of the world economy. These objectives might have been accomplished with different decisions but its hard to argue with the remarkable results obtained by Truman and his advisors.

Dreams of Joy: A Novel (Random House Large Print) Review

"Dreams of Joy" by Lisa See continues the story of sisters Pearl and May, and of Joy, the daughter they share. The story began in "Shanghai Girls" which I very recently read, so the story was fresh in my mind. Pearl and May were once rich and pampered young women who modeled for an artist who painted calendars and ads in 1930s China. The story of how the sisters came to America in the 1930s was riveting and I wasn't ready for their tale to end, so I was happy to learn that Lisa See was already at work on a sequel and "Dreams of Joy" is it.
Told in alternating first-person narratives by Joy and Pearl, we first meet nineteen year old Joy, who recently discovered a huge secret about her past and decides to go to the People's Republic of China to find her birth father and to help Chairman Mao's Communist cause. Pearl is hot on her trail to China, returning to places once familiar now quite changed. The alternating points of view are an effective way to show how both idealistic, Joy, and cynical Pearl, adjust to their new environments. At first, Joys is quite enamored with the new Communist ideal of sharing and equality. Pearl, on the other hand, can easily see the cracks, fissures and hypocrisies in the new regime.
As Mao's "Great Leap Forward" begins to bring famine and death, the novel includes descriptions of suffering as horrible as any zombie movie I've ever seen. These passages are shattering and difficult to read. But the novel is also full of fascinating bits of arcane information, such as that the Maoists thought that bras were oppressive and confiscated them. Also, that returning Chinese scientists had to sign a confession admitting that the Chinese moon was larger than the American moon.
I expect this newest Lisa See novel will be quite popular. See has written several interesting and bestselling historical novels and certainly fans of "Shanghai Girls" will be avid to read this sequel. See does not disappoint.

NASB Large Print Pew Bible (Black, Hardcover Cloth) Review

The NASB is in the forefront of Biblical scholarship, and if you want to own only one copy of the Bible (word for word translation) and you are a non-Catholic Christian, then I would tell you to seriously consider this version (I would point Catholics towards the NRSV or NAB). The NASB does not use inclusive language, it is a very strict interpretation but flows smoothly, and also tends to favor the traditional phrasing.
The NASB has traditionally been awarded the title of "the most literally accurate translation", and while I don't believe this to be 100% accurate, I think it's close on the mark. The NASB does benefit from excellent scholarship, and from major advances in Biblical discovery from the last few decades. Throw in the benefit of the cost of this Bible, which is very inexpensive, and you have an excellent Bible to use for a long time. In addition, the concordance at the back of this bible is frosting on the cake.

Zondervan KJV Study Bible, Large Print Review

The Zondervan KJV Study Bible Large Print is a great Bible. The font size and notes are unsurpassed. This is the 1873 Cambridge edition of the KJV, using the NIV Study Bible notes. Archaic terms are defined in the centre column. This is a BIG Bible, large and very heavy. It is printed in the USA, so the quality may not be so great, but I haven't been able to locate the fault line in either the front or back of the Bible, which is a good thing. This is a much-preferred option to the regular sized edition, which has a small font. I recommend this study Bible highly! And, considering the price of Bibles today, it is reasonably priced.

The Gate House Review

If The Gate House was a race horse, I'd say it came out fast from the gate, pretty much coasted for the large part of the race, then put on the speed in the last couple of lengths. For this reader, The Gate House "placed" in the race but was not the big "winner." I've been a big fan, but with diminishing intensity, of Nelson DeMille since his first book, By The Rivers Of Babylon. Demille's The Gold Coast, to which The Gate House is the sequel, is one of my favorite books of his; and so, when I recently received an ARC of The Gate House I put it at the very top of my to-be-read list. Overall, I enjoyed The Gate House but not as much as The Gold Coast. I'd grade it a B-.The main reason being that with the exception of the last 25 pages of the 667 copy I read, little of any substance happens after the first 100 or so pages. In typical DeMille fashion, his character development is very strong -- particularly in regards to his main male character, John Sutter, whose sarcastic wit permeates throughout this book -- and his narrative ability is at the top of his game. However, after several hundred pages of appreciating these characteristics I was getting very impatient for some action and thrills to occur. I would have enjoyed The Gate House much more if it had 200-300 pages less fluff/filler. The Gate House, for me, is a classic example of the adage, "Less is more." Despite these limitations, if you're a fan of The Gold Coast you're going to want to read The Gate House, which takes place ten years later when Sutter has come home to the Gold Coast of Long Island to attend the funeral of an old family servant. I doubt if you're going to dislike The Gate House. As a matter of fact, you'll probably think it is pretty good. The purpose of my review is to urge you to not -- as I did -- expect a book as good as the one on which it is based.

I Awake to Another Day...: Finding the Light with Multiple Sclerosis Review

The author gives his perspective of how MS has affected his life. What the book did for me was let me understand that the viewpoint of a person with MS and the rest of us suffering from our own affliction(s) are about the same. It is really how we react to those affliction(s) and how we let them control or not control our lives that is important. I have gifted this book to a friend whose husband has MS and is approximately the same age as the author. I hope it brings her comfort to see another person's viewpoint on MS.

I Awake to Another Day...: Finding the Light with Multiple Sclerosis Overview

This book is a first-hand account of my journey with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).As I went through the stages of diagnosis to disease management, it became apparent that while there were numerous books written on the subject of MS, most focused on the medical or clinical aspects of the disease. While these sources were certainly empirically informative, they were coldly lacking in the emotional preparation and guidance that I needed. There is a profoundly personal side to any life changing diagnosis, and this is where the true struggle resided for me.I couldn't turn to anything of a nonclinical substance that would help guide me through the emotional and mental turmoil I was experiencing. There was so much I wanted to know not only from my doctors, but also from other people with MS.As I started navigating my way through things in a bit of a clumsy fashion, I was inspired to write down my thoughts and insight as that new person with MS and what they would likely want to know not only about the disease but also about themselves. This book covers the time I reflected over the year leading up to my diagnosis and the first year after receiving my diagnosis with MS.The book is divided into three distinct parts.Part One looks at a wide variety of personal topics and experiences and the impact Multiple Sclerosis has played on each. There are times of frustration, denial and sorrow. There are topics of extreme support and heroes that have stepped up in my journey. There are character traits that can be of benefit and others that can be detrimental. The intent has been to capture these aspects, feelings and thought provoking situations and how MS has touched it all.In a way, this section is a reflection of my own personal struggle through the initial blow of learning about my MS and coming to accept it as a part of who I now am. Part Two focuses on moving from a position of understanding to truly accepting what MS means in my life.Acceptance doesn't just mean sitting still, but gaining a clear mind on how you are going to choose to live with MS.Acceptance is not just formed from the perspective of being that someone with MS, but it is formed by the people around me as well.Friends, coworkers, and family all will be affected by this disease in some way, and it is vitally important that we prepare to help everyone touched by MS come to a pure sense of acceptance.Part Three is all about capitalizing on the sense of acceptance and beginning to focus on those specific efforts and the needed energy to beat it.Knowing there is no cure today does not mean that I just give up.There are so many things that can be done to maintain a 'normal" life, but it takes work and a proactive frame of mind.Like many struggles we can all face in our lives, MS is really no different. There is almost always a way to make a situation like this better, but it does take time, effort, and determination. From a personal perspective, this book intends to do two things'to help others better understand the everyday experiences of a person with MS, to know what the disease takes away, and also what the disease gives. The second, to help me as a person with MS move beyond merely accepting this disease and knowing that regardless of what limitations I may end up with, that I can contribute to a better result, a brighter future for someone, be a better father and husband to my family, and look back and feel good about my life'every minute of it.Life can be so much more if I can find the way to live with MS in my life rather than find a way to fit my life into MS.My wish to the second point is that it will do the same for you.

NIV Compact Bible, Giant Print Review

This bible is much more than just a Giant Print Compact. It is a well designed, very readable, single column bible.
Why does it matter that it is single column?
Well, For some time now, bibles have been designed so they are physically slimmer and smaller. The result is thinner paper, and double columns (more columns = more words on a page). Tradition has now set in and people are used to seeing a bible in a double column format. This is unfortunate simply because single columns are better for reading at any length (which is why novels, etc, are designed in a single column format), but you cant have your cake and eat it too so since it is cool to have an anorexic bible they are all double column with thin paper. Which is why I am excited about Zondervan taking a chance designing a small, fat bible with a simple interior design...it is enjoyable...
Details:
Paper: Better than average. I would guess that it is 24lb. Ghosting is not bad, but I have found that this is subjective to some degree. Different lighting conditions obviously affects ghosting but with the large type it is very easy to read in almost any lighting condition.
Text: Font size is 12/13 (another wards it is not small...but not clown big). It is reasonably dark and crisp. Font types can be subjective, but this doesn't bother me (although I would not call it elegant). The text spreads nicely across the page at about 10-12 words per line, which is ideal for readability.
Size & Binding: I would call it a Personal Size not Compact. The size is roughly 5x7.5" and it is thick...study bible thick which feels great in the hand. The extra weight adds to the limpness and it easily lies open. Nothing extra special about the cover. I have the Sierra/Black which is nice. The websites do not say that it has a sewn binding, but there is evidence that it might be: When you flex the spine you see stitches every 3/8", and there are signatures dividing the book block that are seen in sewn bibles.
I hope to see more bibles designed this way.

HOLY BIBLE Extra Large Print -KJV Review

Most of the large print Bibles that I have looked at,top the font scales at 11 or 12. However, this bible is amazing. The print is probably a 16 font and very readable for even people with significant vision loss. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys the King James Version over the New International version like I do. It is a large book, a little on the heavy side, but the size of the print makes all the difference to some of us, me included.

Richard Scarry's Biggest Word Book Ever Review

This is the greatest book! I have taught 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade and have always had this book in my classroom. It is great for vocabulary building and just a fun way to get kids interested in books. My students of all ages gave it lots of wear, and it is still in good shape for my son to enjoy. He is now 18 months and ever since he was about 9 months has loved to sit on it and pat the pictures and now he is starting to name different things. It's really unique because of it's giant size (about 1.5'X2') and thick cardboard pages. I think it is well worth the price for the amout of enjoyment and wear you will get out of it! What a great gift too.

New Living Translation Bible (Giant Print) Review

Giant print Bibles can be anything from 10 to 14 point font size, so check first before you buy. This is truly in giant print; a 15 point font size! It is very easy to read without magnifying glasses.
The NLT (New Living Translation) is very easy to understand, because it's the English that's spoken today. It does not veer away from the King James version at all, in my opinion.
This Bible is attractively hard-bound, in a creamy color and texture. It resembles a school textbook, rather than the familiar leather that's common in most Bibles.
So whether it's a bookcase Bible, or a Sunday-go-to-meetin' Bible, this will do quite well.

Dake Annotated Reference Bible-KJV-Large Print Review

I cannot recommend this bible highly enough!
This is a King James version with the most comprhensive notes and references of any bible I have seen. Each page contains four columns, the center two being scripture and the outer two notes and references. There are also extensive notes at the end of each book, as well as a summary containing the date and place, the author, theme, purpose and statistics. Symbols indicate prophecy, promise, command or message from God.
According to the preface, there are 500,000 cross-references and 35,000 notes! It is mind-boggling to say the least that a person could put such a work together without the use of a computer.
There is also a complete concordance and atlas in the back, as well as many other helpful aids for an in-depth study of the Word.
The only criticism, if you could call it that, is that the print is small. But get out the specs and dig in, you'll get a blessing.
One final thing, with such comprehensive references, if you don't find yourself in complete agreement with the author's notes you will still have a wonderful time with this bible.

Burnt Mountain Review

NOTE: I received a free review copy of this book from the publisher.
I have been a fan of author Anne Rivers Siddons for some time now. Although I was raised on the east coast myself, her sweeping southern novels have way of drawing me into their rich, lush context, particularly in her generational sagas such as Peachtree Road and Colony. Plus, Siddons never fails to feature stories of deep, aching romance and invariably tragic consequences--a captivating combination.
At first, BURNT MOUNTAIN seemed to be of a similar tradition to my favorite Siddons works, and it definitely drew me in. The main character is Thayer Wentworth, whose first nine years, growing up on the outskirts of Atlanta, were fairly idyllic: her beloved father is the headmaster of a boys' school that his family founded, and the Wentworths live just off the school's grounds, it a beautiful Greek Revival house along the river. But the death of her father was the earliest tragedy to shape Thayer, followed by a devastating first love affair, and eventually, the relationship which forms the heart of the book and changes Thayer's life forever.
Overall, I did enjoy this novel; as mentioned above, I like Siddons' writing style--it can be a bit melodramatic, but reading one of her books always feels familiar and comforting. On the other hand, I also had several problems with this novel. During the period that Thayer is growing up (i.e., her adolescent and high school years), various references suggest that the story takes place in the 1950s or 60s. However, just a few years later, when Thayer is married (which occurs immediately after her graduation from college), the time is definitely the mid-1990s, as Atlanta is preparing to host the Summer Olympics. Not only does this seem incongruous with the earlier part of the story, but also Siddons includes additional references which don't fit for that time frame (e.g., there is a preponderance of cell phones in the story, which weren't so prevalent in the mid-90s). Finally, Thayer's growing dissatisfaction with her husband, Aengus, never quite feels right. Siddons seems to over-emphasize the point that in the times that Thayer and Aengus still spend together, everything is great, wonderful--if so, does Thayer really have cause to be so massively unhappy?
In the end, I would NOT recommend this book to those who have never read Siddons before, as this is not the best example of her work; instead, I would suggest trying one of the earlier novels that I referenced above. However, if you are already a fan of Siddons like myself and are willing to overlook some flaws in favor of just sinking into Siddons' writing, then you may still enjoy this latest foray into Siddons' southern world.

Burnt Mountain Overview

From one of our most acclaimed writers comes this dramatic tale of a well-born Southern woman whose life is forever changed by the betrayal of her mother and by the man she loves Growing up, the only place tomboy Thayer Wentworth felt at home was at her summer camp - Camp Sherwood Forest in the North Carolina Mountains. It was there that she came alive and where she met Nick Abrams, her first love...and first heartbreak. Years later, Thayer marries Aengus, an Irish professor, and they move into her deceased grandmother's house in Atlanta, only miles from Camp Edgewood on Burnt Mountain where her father died years ago in a car accident. There, Aengus and Thayer lead quiet and happy lives until Aengus is invited up to the camp to tell old Irish tales to the campers. As Aengus spends less time at home and becomes more distant, Thayer must confront dark secrets-about her mother, her first love, and, most devastating of all, her husband.
