Prisoner of Zion Review

The chapter "Over There: Afghanistan After the Fall" should be required reading for anyone involved in foreign policy. The chapters "Najibullah in America" and "Looking for the Taliban in Northern Pakistan" should be part of every creative writing curriculum.

Prisoner of Zion Overview

Soon after the World Trade Center towers fell in autumn 2001, it became clear the United States would invade Afghanistan. Writer and “This American Life" radio producer Scott Carrier decided to go there too. He wanted to see for himself: who are these fanatics, the fundamentalists, the Taliban and the like? What do they want?'In his new book, Prisoner of Zion, Carrier writes about his adventures, but also about the bigger problem. Having grown up among Mormons in Salt Lake City, he argues it will never work to attack the true believers head-on. The faithful thrive on persecution. Somehow, he thinks, we need to find a way-inside ourselves-to rise above fear and anger. Prisoner of Zion is Scott Carrier's second collection of dramatic tales and essays.

No Easy Road Review

The author's life experiences are heartbreaking, and the subject matter covered is not easy to read about. Many of the details of the abuse the author experienced are absolutely horrific. However, the author's resilience shines through in the end, and the fact that she was able to write this book is a testament to the strength of her spirit. Yes, the writing is a bit unpolished, but it is worth overlooking the writing style.

No Easy Road Overview

Josie told me she was murdered. When you're a lonely six-year-old, you don't really understand what that means. All you know is you're happy to have a friend to play with.Patsy Whyte caught glimpses of an invisible world growing up in a children's home in Aberdeen. One of a family of ten traveller children, torn apart by the state in the 1950's, Patsy recalls a childhood scarred by years of mental and emotional abuse, prejudice and hatred.Patsy left the home at the age of 15, angry, naive and ill-prepared, but with a will to survive which would be tested to the limit. She rubbed shoulders with the rich and powerful and the poorest in the land, and drifted into a world of violence, prostitution and drugs which almost claimed her life.More than anything, No Easy Road is a testament to the survival of the human spirit.

Let's Get It On: The Making of MMA and Its Ultimate Referee Review

Big John was with the UFC from day one, and in his memoir he recalls what it was really like at the birth of MMA. In this candid book he shares his experiences in and out of the cage. The book is a must read for any Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)or Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC)!
"Big" John McCarthy's memory and ability to relate a story only rivaled by his witty humor and his love for the sport. I recommend this book to all - it is a real page-turner!

Let's Get It On: The Making of MMA and Its Ultimate Referee Overview

An intimate profile of the legendary mixed martial arts (MMA) referee, this first full-length autobiography of pop culture icon “Big" John McCarthy details every aspect of his life-from his strong-handed Los Angeles upbringing to his involvement in the naming of the sport, his role in its regulation, and MMA's rise in stature. The narrative follows “Big" John through his 22-year career as a Los Angeles police officer, where he taught recruits arrest and control procedures as well as survival tactics, then his 15-year career as MMA's premier official in the chain-linked cage. A fixture of the sport, “Big" John started refereeing at UFC 2 in 1994 when MMA was in its infancy and went on to officiate at every major UFC event but two until 2007. Following a one-year hiatus as a color commentator and on-camera analyst for MMA and boxing events, he returned to MMA refereeing in 2008. In his own words, "Big" John relates his insider's perspective from the midst of many of the sport's greatest moments-from Tito Ortiz-Ken Shamrock I at UFC 40 in 2002 to Randy Couture-Tim Sylvia at UFC 68 in March of 2007-along with his account of the birth of the sport in America, its evolution, and MMA's ongoing struggles for acceptance.

The Gipper: George Gipp, Knute Rockne, and the Dramatic Rise of Notre Dame Football Review

Notre Dame was a very respectable football program before Knute Rockne became the coach. In the ten seasons prior to Knute being named head coach, Notre Dame's record under four different coaches was 66 wins, 7 losses, and 5 ties, for a winning percentage of .878, which is just shy of Rockne's .881 winning percentage over 13 seasons. Notre Dame had already burst onto the national scene with its historic win over Army at West Point in 1913, which featured quarterback Gus Dorais throwing the ball to end Knute Rockne in a historical display of passing proficiency which truly changed the way football was played from that day forward.
But it was the ascendancy of George Gipp as Notre Dame's star player and the promotion of Knute Rockne from assistant to head football coach that took Notre Dame football to the next level. When Rockne first became Notre Dame's coach, during Gipp's second varsity season in 1918, a typical crowd at a big game would be 5,000 fans at standing-room-only Cartier Field. In Rockne's final season, 1930, Notre Dame opened a new 54,400 seat stadium on campus and played Army at Soldier Field in Chicago in front of a crowd estimated at 110,000 fans. And, of course, as the fame of the Fighting Irish grew, so did the reputation of the University of Notre Dame which has sought since Rockne to achieve recognition and respect for its academic accomplishments while it nevertheless embraces the fame and the financial rewards that accrue to its football team.
The Gipper covers what is known of George Gipp's life growing up in Laurium, Michigan and all his exploits as a Notre Dame football player and sometime student. Ample coverage is given to Gipp's very sporadic academic pursuits as well as his expertise as a billiards player, card player, and gambler. And the author tries to sort the fact from the fiction of Rockne's "Win one for the Gipper" speech and Gipp's tragic death. As amazing as Gipp's statistics and performance as a football player are, I was even more amazed by how easily it apparently all came to him. He rarely practiced football, and normally reported for the season at the last minute, if not a week or two late. He was a talented baseball player who was actively sought after by multiple major league franchises and was the best pool shooter in Northern Indiana. He broke a leg near the end of his first varsity season, and scored a key touchdown in his final game, against Indiana, after suffering a dislocated shoulder and a broken collar bone.
In addition to providing a real education about two Notre Dame legends, The Gipper offers real insight into what college football was really like in its infancy. The lax academic standards, the Sunday pro games played under assumed names, players playing at West Point for four years after exhausting eligibility in All-American careers at other schools. The 1918 season that was almost entirely canceled due to a nationwide flu epidemic. Michigan's campaign to keep Notre Dame out of the Western Conference (forerunner to the Big Ten) and to blackball Notre Dame from playing Western Conference teams. All are covered here in an entertaining, easy to read presentation that fans of Notre Dame will love, and that all fans of college football history will appreciate.

World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War Review

I was one of many who heard about Max Brooks' satirical guide book The Zombie Survival Guide: Complete Protection from the Living Dead. Being a huge fan of George A. Romero's Dead series of films and just the zombie subgenre in general, I was intrigued by the release of this guidebook. From the first page to the last I was impressed, entertained, and hooked on Brooks' serio-comic take on how to survive a zombie outbreak. One section of the book which really caught my interest and has remained a favorite to reread over and over was the final one which details the so-called "historical" instances of past zombie outbreaks throughout history. From as far back as Ancient Egypt and Rome up to the late 1990's. My only gripe about that section of the book was that it was all-too-brief. I felt that it could've been made longer and even would've made for a fine book on its own. Maybe I wasn't the only one to have wished for such a thing to happen for it seems that Brooks himself might have thought the same thing. His latest book in his trip through the zombie genre is titled World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War and it takes the final chapter of his previous book and expands on it. But instead of using past "historical events" to tell his story Brooks goes into the near future to describe what would happen if the zombies ever did bring the human race to the brink of extinction and how humans finally learned how to fight back and take back the world.
World War Z is a fictional account of a worldwide outbreak of the living dead in the near future and judging from some of the descriptions of places and events in the beginning of the book it won't be too far in the future. WWZ is done in an interview-style format with each chapter consisting of first-person interviews of individuals who lived through the Zombie War from its initial outbreak to it's final battles and mop-up operations. The sampling of survivors interviewed range from soldiers who fought the losing battles in the early going of the war when lack of information, outdated tactics, and illogical reactions to the zombie outbreak contributed to humanity almost losing the war. These soldier survivors explain how humanity became its own worst enemy when it came to protecting its own and combatting the growing ranks of the zombies. Some of the mistakes were unavailable as information on how to combat the zombies were far and few and even then most were unreliable. Some mistakes on the other hand many today would consider as unconscionable as war-profiteers and those willing to put keep a hold on their own power would sacrifice their own people to keep it so.
There's also regular people who survived the war and who made great contributions during the dark days when humanity were pushed into isolated and fortified pockets of resistance as everywhere around them the zombie army grew exponentially. Some of these people were just children when the outbreak first began as rumors and unsubstantiated news reports. It's the words of those children now adults that show how war and conflict really takes the biggest toll on the smallest and helpless. One could substitute the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, The Balkans and even Africa in lieu of Brooks zombie war and this book would still resonate. There's a particular entry of how children left to their own devices to try and survive alone in the wild with zombies all around have turned feral to the point that their capacity to learn and develop into adulthood has become stunted or even halted permanently.
Brooks' novel also puts in little veiled references to the events occurring now in the real world. There's mention of the unpopular war in the Persian Gulf as having a detrimental effect on the morale of troops once they returned home and how this helped make the initial fight to stem the tide of the zombies a losing proposition from the outset. There's also mention of Iran as having acquired a nuclear arsenal and how this leads to an incident early in the Great Panic of the zombie outbreak that speaks volume of what could happen if unstable states acquire weapons of mass destruction. Brooks' also gives a prescient look into a near future where the US and Europe stop being the economic superpowers of the world and step aside for the economic juggernaut that is China and India. All these inferences of today's geopolitical and economical events mirrors what might just come into fruition.
The interview format really gives the book a sense of realism despite the outrageous and fantastical nature of the book. As I read the book I was reminded of Stephen A. Ambrose's books on the men and women who fought during World War 2. Ambrose also used interviews and personal accounts to make up the bulk of his books like in Citizen Soldiers and Band of Brothers. Having a personal take on the events gave his books more emotional impact and really brought the emotions of the conflict to those who never experienced it. The same could be said about Max Brooks' World War Z. Even though it's fictional thru and thru it still made the reader think of how such an event, if it ever came to pass, could be so tragic, disheartening but in the end uplifting as it once again shows that humanity could still pull itself together through all its petty misunderstandings to survive. On a more stylistic point, Brooks' novel shares some similarities to Theodore Judson's sci-fi epic Fitzpatrick's War. Judson's book also tries to chronicle a future war which was shaped by religious and ideological forces. Where Judson goes way into the future of an alternate Earth, Brooks smartly stays to a more forseeable future that readers of his book would most likely see happen; hopefully a much brighter and less-zombified one.
Brooks' decision to forgo the usual linear and narrative style for this book also allowed him a certain bit of freedom to introduce one-shot characters in addition to those who appear regularly. In a more traditional novel such one-shot characters would seem useless and even unnecessary, but in this interview format it makes more sense since it's really just a collection of personalities trying to describe their own take of the Zombie War they lived through. Some people I know who have read advance reader's copies of the book (I was lucky enough to procure an ARC copy myself months in advance) have said that there's little or no talk of love and relationships in World War Z. I for one was glad that Brooks didn't try to force certain "interviews" where it talks of survivors finding love and relationships during the outbreak, through the war and all the way to the mop-up. This book chronicles tales of survival and horror. As much as a tale of love would've been a change of pace to all the death and horror in the interviews it would've been too drastic a change of pace. I would think that the last thing that most people would have in their minds when trying to survive day-to-day, if not hour-to-hour would be to stop for a moment and have sex, cuddle or other less-than survival behaviors.
All in all, Max Brooks' World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War takes a serious look at a fictional and fantastical premise and event with a serious eye. The book manages to be tragic and terrifyingly sot-on about how the world governments today could fail when confronted by such a horror of tremendous proportions. Unlike his funnier first book on the zombie subject, World War Z shows the flaws and failings of humanity and how it almost led to its extinction, but it also shows humanity's stubbornness in the face of total annihilation and how it could come together in cooperation to not just survive but take back the world. In times of extreme adversity man can be brought to his knees but also show his resilience. A great novel and one that deserves reading from not just fans of the horror and zombie subgenre, but those who enjoy taking a peek into what could be, no matter how outrageous.

A Hidden Witch (A Modern Witch Series: Book 2) Review

I received this book for free from the author. To give you an idea of how entrancing her new novel is, I received it last night and finished it this morning. I could not put it down for more than a moment. The cast of characters that I came to know and love in A Modern Witch came back to share a new tale of self-discovery and family bonds that transcend bloodlines and move into the family of the heart.
Debora Geary has a rare talent for creating characters that reach out and touch your heart in ways that make each page a fascinating experience. I laugh with them, cry with them, worry with them, and enjoy every moment of it. If you like modern fiction with a magical twist, this is not a book to pass up!

The Measure of the Magic: Legends of Shannara Review

This is the second book in the Legends of Shannara duology which is another of the prequel series that takes place before the original Shannara trilogy.
I read this latest book after just finishing "Bearers of the Black Staff" the first book in this short series. I quite enjoyed the first book which in many ways was standard Fantasy fare but written capably. Brooks is very good at creating solid characters that you care about and want to find out what happens next. "The Measure of the Magic" does add quite a lot of escalation to the first novel. The first book ends with a very serious situation of an invasion coming into the valley that had been protected for 500 years. A new danger enters onto the scene that is much more serious and a greater threat to the new holder of the Black Staff and his friend and companion. This really adds to the story and makes it something more than just the end of the duo logy wrapping up previous plot points.
I really liked the character development and the sacrifices some of the characters made and the book is more bitter-sweet than the other novels in the series. Other plot elements and new characters round up the story. Considering the young age of the main characters this novel though does feel more like a transitional novel than the end of the duology. The characters were certainly strong enough for a continuation of the story and I certainly liked it enough to have wanted this to be more than a duology, but there always has to be a cutting of point when working with young heroes such as the Harry Potter series.
If you like Terry Brooks style I am confident you will enjoy this addition. I had forgotten how much I liked his writings and need to go back and read the other series again in the Shannara world.

Galapagos (Kurt Vonnegut series) Review

You know what my big brain told me to do? It told me to read all the Vonnegut I could get my hands on, and my big brain finally got something right. More social commentary from the master of fiction with a message, Galapagos tells the story of the last band of humans and how they evolve, absent technology.
What's the cause of all human misery? An oversized brain, which brings up the book's tagline - My Big Brain Told Me To . . .
What would humans be like without this oversized brain? What would the earth be like without a species with an oversized brain? These are the questions Vonnegut explores in depth.
As usual, Vonnegut's narrator is a master satirist with a rambling tone who seems to be going in wrong directions, but ties all threads together brilliantly. In this book, the narrator is the son of Kilgore Trout, a frequently recurring character in Vonnegut novels.
I don't think it's the best Vonnegut novel which makes it merely fantastic.
- CV Rick

Galapagos (Kurt Vonnegut series) Overview

Vonnegut was in his early sixties and his career, still successful, drawing toward a kind of bitter summation when GALAPAGOS (1985) was published. His early work with its unequivocal statement of absurdity and hopelessness, was now almost four decades behind when he completed this meditation on Darwinism, fate and the essential irrelevance of the human condition. Here, humanity has in the millions of years after inevitable holocaust transmogrified into a race of not-quite-human seals emerged from human exile on Darwin's Galapagos Islands. Leon Trotsky Trout, the son of Vonnegut's wretched familiar character Kilgore Trout, watches and broods over his no-longer-human descendants who have made natural selection a matter of debased survivalism. Again, and using a device common in his novels after SLAUGHTERHOUSE-FIVE, the material is presented in the form of a transcript or memoir; Trout unhappily witnessing a sad outcome which may nonetheless represent the best of all human possibilities. Trout's father Kilgore, in ghostly form, remains in communication, urging his son to cease observing and exit but Leon will not take the opportunity, feeling linked to the pathetic, morphed shards of humanity who remain on the Islands. Whether the survival of the seals constitutes human survival, whether Kilgore and his son are imaginary fragments of evolutionary decay lurk as questions beneath a sequence of events which show Vonnegut trapped in the Age of Reagan. Vonnegut is trying to see through (rather than to shape) his material; the theme of the novel represents a kind of apotheosis and never has Vonnegut's ambiguous despair been more clearly revealed or more clearly made the engine of his narrative.Kurt Vonnegut (1922-2007) is perhaps the most beloved American writer of the 20th century. His audience has built steadily since his first pieces in the 1950's. Vonnegut's 1968 novel, SLAUGHTERHOUSE-FIVE has become a canonic war novel - with Joseph Heller's CATCH-22 the truest and darkest of all to have come from World War II. Vonnegut began as a science fiction writer and his early novels PLAYER PIANO and THE SIRENS OF TITAN were so categorized even as they appealed to a young audience far beyond science fiction readers. In the 1960's he became the writer most identified with the Baby Boomer generation. Like the novels of Mark Twain, Kurt Vonnegut's large body of work is now understood as unified. There is a consistency to his satirical insight, humor and anger which makes his work synergistic. The more of Kurt Vonnegut's work you read, the more the work resonates and the more you wish to read. Vonnegut's reputation - like Twain's - will grow steadily through the decades to come as his work grows in relevance, truthfulness and searing insight.

Succubus Revealed: Georgina Kincaid, Book 6 Review

Originally posted at Wicked Lil Pixie Reviews.

This is a spoiler-free review but assumes familiarity with the Georgina Kincaid series.
And here we are... The End. Succubus Revealed is the last book in Richelle Mead's Georgina Kincaid series and I cannot begin to tell you how bittersweet reading this book felt. I wanted to hurry up and read it, yet slow down and savor the story. Ultimately I settled on "screw it, full speed ahead!" and read it in one seating.
We find Georgina working as a Santa's elf at a high-end Mall, far away from her former ideal job at her beloved bookstore, which she had to leave after what happened with Seth and Maddie. Ugh Maddie. Blech, do. not. like! But that's another rant for another time. Georgie's been ordered by Hell to transfer her succubus services to Las Vegas, but when she goes out there to scope out the scene, things seem a little too intentionally perfect. With Seth Mortenson's sister-in-law still ill with cancer in Seattle, this transfer is yet one more hurdle in their attempt to be with each other. Sweet cheesus will Georgie and Seth ever be able to be together?! You'll have your answer by the end of Succubus Revealed and I get sentimentally teary-eyed all over again just remembering it.
I did find some parts somewhat predictable, which made the beginning a little slow for me. The first half of the book was slow-moving, but by the middle, things start Happening with a capital H. Some readers probably have figured out several revelations that are hinted at in the last book, Succubus Shadows, but it is the raw emotions Ms. Mead is able to evoke that make this book so fantastic. I think Seth and Roman fans alike will be pleased with the outcome and with how things play out. The plot twists involving Jerome, Carter, and Roman separately are quite powerful. While I would have liked to have seen a few more things addressed, maybe a little more things flipped upside down in true Richelle Mead fashion, I was pleased with the way this ultimate love conquers all series was drawn to an end. The Georgina series will continue to be one of my favorites and I highly recommend it. They are very very sexy, highly emotional books, and I am glad Ms. Mead had this end in mind for Succubus Revealed. The Georgina Kincaid Series reading order:
Succubus Blues
Succubus on Top
Succubus Dreams
Succubus Heat
Succubus Shadows
Succubus Revealed (The End!)

One Grave at a Time: Night Huntress, Book 6 Review

I discovered Cat, aka the Red Reaper, and Bones shortly after the release of Destined for an Early Grave (Night Huntress, Book 4). Fans on Ilona Andrews' forum (Authors of the Kate Daniels Series Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, Book 1)) directed me to this wonderful series. I devoured the first four books. I was mesmerized by Cat, her family, her world, her abilities, and her team of hunters she created. Cat's trouble with being caught between two worlds and embracing her true self was heartfelt. The chemistry between Cat and Bones had me fixated on their story. I quickly picked up the two spin-offs centering around two of Bones' fellow vampires. (One was okay, enjoyed the other.) However, when it came to THIS SIDE OF THE GRAVE, I was left feeling a bit disappointed. It felt as if the magic wasn't quite there. Oh, it had an excellent storyline and plot, but it felt a bit lackluster. So, even though I was eager to get my hands on book 6 (this little beauty), I was still a bit apprehensive.
Five weeks have pass since the events of THIS SIDE OF THE GRAVE. Cat can't seem to get rid of Marie's power and ghosts still flock to her. Cat's ghost friend Fabian finally has a request for help: the ghost Fabian is in love with needs help eradicating another ghost and wants Cat's help doing it. Centuries ago, Heinrich Kramer was a witch hunter and didn't necessarily stop once he died. He's used the fear and torture of innocent women to increase his own power giving him the ability to inflict harm on flesh even when he remains spectral. So, how do you kill someone who is already dead? Cat & Bones do everything they think of to end this witch hunter's existence forever and stop his reign of terror.
The magic is back. I still don't think this latest installment is the best of the series, but it felt like things are coming back together giving me higher hopes for the next book.
What I enjoyed:
1.Cat & Bones are back and stronger than before: no more leaving each other, no more forced separation for an entire book, no more trying to save the other by running off half-cocked. They have weathered the storms and have learned: they are fighting this one together.
2.Cat's growth--Cat has a LONG life ahead of her and is finally realizing it. This realization is changing her outlook a bit, but she is still the Cat we all know and love. She still has her great sense of humor and is full of snide remarks. She has just finally come to realize she can be happy in the moment.
3.Bones--what a hottie! He is growing and developing as well. I loved that even though he still has the vampire territorialism that he has loosened up a bit and is more trusting. I also loved how he seemed to be more of a partner to Cat rather than a teacher.
4.The romance--Cat and Bones' relationship is solid. There were so many small tender moments between them that really made me smile. For those looking for it, there is one sex scene. It's not a Chapter 21, but it was unique and fun. I can honestly say I have NEVER read something like this before. It gives the name "Mile High Club" a whole new meaning.
5.Friends--not everyone got in the book, some had a few pages, and some only had their names mentioned. But those who were there added much to the story and made me smile. Cat's mom is still feisty even though she is still struggling with her change. I actually liked Denise here! Ian--what a hoot! And we meet Tyler the Medium. I absolutely LOVED Tyler.
6.The Challenge--Cat has prevailed against so many things. But how do you fight something that isn't corporal? Something that can use physical violence against you but you can't touch? Something that can't die or be erased? I enjoyed watching Cat tried to out maneuver a crafty old ghost. Cat can't just unleash her Red Reaper skills since she can't physically touch the sly witch hunter. I do wish we could have seen her go all Reaper on everything, but that wasn't in the cards this book.

Things that didn't quite work for me:
1.The villain--every other book revolved around a very personal enemy. That intimate connection gave each story emotion, depth, and gravity that was just lacking here. Think back to books 1-5: Cat had to battle her own prejudices, Ian, Patra, Gregor, and Appollyon. Book 6? Not so much. Yeah, this guy is sick and twisted but only torments Cat because Cat went looking for him as a personal favor to Fabian. And then Fabian was AWOL a lot of the story. I just missed that personal touch. It's just not the same when she goes looking for trouble.
2.The ending--yes, we do get a clear resolution to the problem, but for some reason I felt like the ending was incomplete. It lacked that sigh of satisfaction. The ending seemed to be just quickly summarized and thrown on there.
ONE GRAVE AT A TIME was a nice installment to this series, which I had a hard time putting it down. I like where Ms. Frost is taking Cat and Bones and am glad some of the magic is back. Oh, and as an added bonus, we get a small excerpt from Cat and Bones' Christmas story due out in November called HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS. That little snippet was nice and juicy making me want the novella and the next book that much more.

The Story of Your Life Review

This book was an amazing collection of stories from people from so many walks of life. The book was both inspiring and motivational and you will be encouraged to continue reading this from the beginning to end and see what stories come next. I have to say that I love what Matthew West has done here and with the CD that he wrote and shared with fans based on the stories that were shared with him too. The stories ground you and many lift your spirit. I highly encourage all to read this book!

Please Enroll Responsibly: Avoiding Indoctrination at College Review

Subscribers of Lee's youtube channel or anyone else familiar with his work know his style and his ebook certainly does not disappoint. The book provides a very concise, fact supported, guide to navigating your way through higher education. Obviously the book is written from a certain perspective (i.e. that you should avoid leftist indoctrination) but any bias in the tone of the arguments is negated by the factual support cited throughout. If you are thinking about going to college, in college, or just interested in the topic I cannot think of a better way to spend $.99 and an hour of your time. Finally if you are not convinced of the value of this ebook, the list of works he recommends at the end of the book is also an excellent addition.

Please Enroll Responsibly: Avoiding Indoctrination at College Overview

Enrolling in a typical sociology class appears to be the most efficient way to destroy brain cells. While some people argue binge drinking is worse, one must consider that hangovers are temporary and significantly less expensive. Leftist indoctrination, on the other hand, leads to permanent brain damage along with incredible financial debt. Please enroll responsibly. This book is your helmet for higher education. Like a helmet, it cannot guarantee to protect you, but it may mitigate the trauma. It is written for students, parents and those who want to guard their children from the potential damage college can inflict on young minds.Students enroll in college assuming they'll graduate smarter. What they don't realize is that many professors spout their leftist ideology in the classroom without offering opposing opinions. Students fear their grades will suffer if they question what they are taught.Lee Doren sets out to help students conflicted with this dilemma. He also provides advice for families wondering if college is still worth the price. He writes from personal experience detailing his own political transformation from a liberal “community organizer" to an advocate for limited government.

Jar City: A Reykjavík Thriller Review

A sixty-nine year old man named Holberg is discovered murdered in his basement apartment in Reykjavik, Iceland, with a note the murderer had pinned to his chest saying "I am Him."
Murders in Iceland are very rare and usually quickly solved, but Inspector Erlendur Sveninsson believes there is more to the murder than meets the eye. There are barely any clues, but Erlendur does have a photo of a graveyard headstone and a few other leads. He chases the leads down and finds out that Holberg had been accused of a series of rapes in the past and to solve the murder in the present apparently Erlendur is going to have to solve the crimes of the past.
Erlendur is divorced, fifty, smokes too much, is not in the best of health and his drug addicted daughter barely speaks to him. He is a wonderful character. And how the plot revolves around organ removal and how they store them in jars in rooms they call Jar City, is fascinating as is Erlendur's police work. This is an excellent story and a very interesting look at some very serious issues.

Hidden in Plain View (Darryl Billups Mysteries) Review

Darryl Billups is back in Baltimore and this time his focus is intra-racial i.e. black-on-black crime with a twist. When black professionals start turning up dead in Baltimore at upscale addresses the usual easy answers--drugs and gangs, for such crimes aren't applicable. The mysterious unseen causes of these deaths aren't made any clearer by the autopsies and suggest that the killer has a very diabolic mind and method. The novel is written in both first and third person. Darryl speaks to us in first person so that we follow him along as he gains new information and works to put the puzzle together. In alternating chapters the killer and the killer's actions are described in third person, allowing the identity to remain a mystery until close to the end, when the reader discovers who it is first. As the novel picks up pace in its concluding chapters, you have a strong desire to warn Daryl of the danger ahead, but you're force to race through the pages, hoping and praying that he'll figure it out in time to save those closest to him. A true spell-binder, equal to and surpassing his previous novel and every bit as good in its own right and for its genre as his autobiography on Reggie Lewis was for its.

Pedro Paramo (COLECCION LETRAS HISPANICAS) (Spanish Edition) Review

Nothing in literature can prepare you for the impact of Pedro Paramo for nothing in literature compares to this novel from Mexican author Juan Rulfo. Published in 1955, and Rulfo's only novel, Pedro Paramo is the story of Juan Preciado's quest to find both his roots and his father. Fulfilling his mother's dying wish, Juan sets out for the rural Mexican village of Comala, the village of his mother's memories, the village where "she sighed about going back," and where Pedro Paramo, lover, overlord and murderer, spent his childhood and his youth. What Juan finds in Comala is something very different from what he expected, something very different from what the reader expects, for Comala is truly a village of the damned, a hell that one literally descends into, never to return. As Juan Preciado meets first one, then another of the inhabitants of Comala, he comes to an astonishing revelation--everyone in Comala, including his father, is dead. The second half of Pedro Paramo concerns itself with the reasons why Comala became a village of the dead and the emphasis then shifts to the enigmatic character of Susana San Juan, the only woman Pedro Pramo ever truly loved and the one who was forever denied him. Although few details are provided about Susana San Juan, we come to see her as the epitome of two archetypes: the heavenly goddess and the overtly sexual madwoman. When she dies and ascends into heaven, in front of Pedro Paramo's own eyes, the fate of Comala and its residents becomes forever sealed. Although this small book may seem to lack structure (there are no chapter breaks), it is highly structured. It is, however, a structure of silences, hanging threads, truncated scenes, and even non-time. Rulfo moves backwards and forewards between the past (the Comala of the living) and the present (the Comala of the dead). The author moves seamlessly between first person and third person; scenes cut into one another and move effortlessly from one location to another and yet nothing is jarring, nothing is out of place. Although more horrifying than any other book I have ever read, Pedro Paramo does not "fit" into any genre and Rulfo uses none of the usual writer's techniques to enhance his story. Rulfo simply uses straightforward narration, moving from conscious thought to memory, from the world of the living to the world of the dead. In an interview in 1980, Rulfo, himself, said that he wanted to allow the reader to participate in the telling of the story, in the filling in of the blanks. Pedro Paramo is a shadowy, eerie, haunting work, and one whose impact on literature cannot be over-emphasized. Gabriel Garcia Marquez has called this book the most influential reading of his early writing years and has admitted to memorizing the entire text. Yet Pedro Paramo completely lacks the humor of Garcia Marquez (in fact, its bleakness is entirely unrelieved) and it is definitely not magical realism. Although this book defies classification, it is most definitely a masterpiece and most definitely one-of-a kind.

Race and Prayer: Collected Voices, Many Dreams Review

Collaboratively compiled by Malcom Boyd (Episcopal priest and poet/writer in residence at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul, Los Angeles) and Chester Talon (Bishop Suffragan of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles), Race And Prayer: Collected Voices, Many Dreams consists of dealing with the transformation of anger and impressive and inspiring poems, prayers, and prose frustration to a condition of reconciliation and healing. Enhanced with twelve cartoons by Los Angeles times editorial cartoonist Paul Conrad, Race And Prayer is organized into five sections (Suffering and Anger; Prejudice and Hatred; Diversity; Reconciliation and Healing; Growth in Understanding and Sharing). Race And Prayer is important and highly recommended reading for all Christians regardless of denominational affiliation or background.

Race and Prayer: Collected Voices, Many Dreams Overview

The damage done by hatred and prejudice-based on race, sexual orientation, religion, or gender-runs very deep. The damage done is often invisible, but it simmers beneath the surface anyway. In Race and Prayer, Malcolm Boyd and Chester Talton have collected poems, prayers, and prose that bring the anger and frustration to light, and ultimately, they hope, to a place of reconciliation and healing.Race and Prayer is divided into five sections: Suffering and Anger; Prejudice and Hatred; Diversity; Reconciliation and Healing; and Growth in Understanding and Sharing. Contributors to this collection range in age from teenagers to the elderly, and include men and women from a wide variety of racial and ethnic backgrounds, all of whom speak honestly of their own experiences, heartbreaks, and hopes. Twelve cartoons from three-time Pulitzer Prize winner Paul Conrad, editorial cartoonist at the Los Angeles Times, add to the power of this collection.

I Awake to Another Day...: Finding the Light with Multiple Sclerosis Review

The author gives his perspective of how MS has affected his life. What the book did for me was let me understand that the viewpoint of a person with MS and the rest of us suffering from our own affliction(s) are about the same. It is really how we react to those affliction(s) and how we let them control or not control our lives that is important. I have gifted this book to a friend whose husband has MS and is approximately the same age as the author. I hope it brings her comfort to see another person's viewpoint on MS.

I Awake to Another Day...: Finding the Light with Multiple Sclerosis Overview

This book is a first-hand account of my journey with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).As I went through the stages of diagnosis to disease management, it became apparent that while there were numerous books written on the subject of MS, most focused on the medical or clinical aspects of the disease. While these sources were certainly empirically informative, they were coldly lacking in the emotional preparation and guidance that I needed. There is a profoundly personal side to any life changing diagnosis, and this is where the true struggle resided for me.I couldn't turn to anything of a nonclinical substance that would help guide me through the emotional and mental turmoil I was experiencing. There was so much I wanted to know not only from my doctors, but also from other people with MS.As I started navigating my way through things in a bit of a clumsy fashion, I was inspired to write down my thoughts and insight as that new person with MS and what they would likely want to know not only about the disease but also about themselves. This book covers the time I reflected over the year leading up to my diagnosis and the first year after receiving my diagnosis with MS.The book is divided into three distinct parts.Part One looks at a wide variety of personal topics and experiences and the impact Multiple Sclerosis has played on each. There are times of frustration, denial and sorrow. There are topics of extreme support and heroes that have stepped up in my journey. There are character traits that can be of benefit and others that can be detrimental. The intent has been to capture these aspects, feelings and thought provoking situations and how MS has touched it all.In a way, this section is a reflection of my own personal struggle through the initial blow of learning about my MS and coming to accept it as a part of who I now am. Part Two focuses on moving from a position of understanding to truly accepting what MS means in my life.Acceptance doesn't just mean sitting still, but gaining a clear mind on how you are going to choose to live with MS.Acceptance is not just formed from the perspective of being that someone with MS, but it is formed by the people around me as well.Friends, coworkers, and family all will be affected by this disease in some way, and it is vitally important that we prepare to help everyone touched by MS come to a pure sense of acceptance.Part Three is all about capitalizing on the sense of acceptance and beginning to focus on those specific efforts and the needed energy to beat it.Knowing there is no cure today does not mean that I just give up.There are so many things that can be done to maintain a 'normal" life, but it takes work and a proactive frame of mind.Like many struggles we can all face in our lives, MS is really no different. There is almost always a way to make a situation like this better, but it does take time, effort, and determination. From a personal perspective, this book intends to do two things'to help others better understand the everyday experiences of a person with MS, to know what the disease takes away, and also what the disease gives. The second, to help me as a person with MS move beyond merely accepting this disease and knowing that regardless of what limitations I may end up with, that I can contribute to a better result, a brighter future for someone, be a better father and husband to my family, and look back and feel good about my life'every minute of it.Life can be so much more if I can find the way to live with MS in my life rather than find a way to fit my life into MS.My wish to the second point is that it will do the same for you.

Firestorm Review

I've read all of Radclyffe's novels, and Firestorm was definitely lackluster in comparison. The plot was extremely weak, the characters not terribly well developed, and, though there was sexual tension, the sex scenes fell far short of what I've come to expect from Radclyffe. For a book entitled "Firestorm," this one didn't deliver much fire on several levels.

Firestorm Overview

Firefighter paramedic Mallory “Ice" James commands a crew of smokejumpers-twenty women and men who eat together, sleep together, and parachute into the face of raging forest fires together-and she has thirty days to whip the rookies into shape. Discipline and teamwork mean the difference between life and death on the line, and she's earned her reputation as cool and controlled in the face of danger. Mallory isn't happy when “Hotshot" Jac Russo shows up unannounced for boot camp along with a reputation for being trouble. Jac is none too pleased about her cold reception, even if the new boss is drop-dead gorgeous and hotter than the blazes they're supposed to be dousing. Mallory and Jac may not like each other much, but lust isn't something either can control-and they soon discover ice burns as fiercely as flame.

We Shall Never Forget 9/11 Coloring Book - Graphic Coloring Novel Review

It's just that good. The picture of Osama using a woman as a human shield is worth the price of the book.

We Shall Never Forget 9/11 Coloring Book - Graphic Coloring Novel Overview

To the American people and all others who may read this child's coloring book, We Shall Never Forget is designed to be a tool that parents can use to help teach children about the facts surrounding 911. As the 911 events are shown countless times on national media, this book will help children understand the meaning of these events. We Shall Never Forget. In this book you will see what happens to a terrorist who orders others to bomb our peace loving wonderful nation. The September 11, 2001, sneak attacks on America are now commonly referred to as 911. It was a series of coordinated attacks by a radical Islamic Muslim extremist terrorist group who call themselves Al Qaeda. They were self-proclaimed Jihadists; many American people refer to them as homicide bombers. their leader was a murderous thug of Egyptian nationality named Osama Bin Laden, and they used hijacked U.S. airplanes as weapons. The hijackers intentionally crashed two of the airplanes into the World Trade Centers in New York City. A third airplane was crashed into the Pentagon, close to Washington, D.C., and a fourth airplane was crashed into a rural area at Shanksville, Pennsylvania. A total of 3,000+ innocent people from over 70 countries were killed. There were no survivors from any of the airplanes. The murderous radical Islamic Muslim extremist hijackers wanted to crash the fourth airplane into the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. Heroic Americans onboard that airliner stormed the cockpit and made the airplane crash into a field, thereby saving many, many lives in the Washington, D.C. area. What brave people. In a world of constant motion and instant media, this coloring book will focus an individual, no matter the age, directly onto the events of September 11th, 2001, also known as 911, depicting, lest we never forget, the facts of that day and beyond, including the basics of freedom. God Bless the men, women, and children who were murdered on 911. And bless the American heroes who have died, and will continue to die, in this war on terror that was brought to our land. I will never forget, you will never forget, and the world will never forget. And also, will never forget. Yes, they know of whom are. Given the chance, would do it again. We cannot forget, if they could-we know-they would, destroy a city, a state, or even an entire people. Terrorism is human made and is very old; it comes in people of all shapes, sizes, and colors. Children of America! As you grow, Do Not Forget. This is your world now. A serious children's book. 9781935266976
