Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences Review

When I had to take statistics as an undergraduate psychology student, I struggled to get through the course and was fortunate to get a "C". As a doctoral student in clinical psychology, I had to once again take statistics and I had nightmares of once again trying to get a passing grade. However, I am happy to say that I passed statistics and actually got an "A". I firmly believe it is due in large part to this textbook by Gravetter & Wallnau.
The tone of the textbook is relaxed and conversational. The authors definitely believe in keeping their explanations of sometimes complex statistical concepts as simple as possible. The book is filled with figures, step-by-step explanations of how to solve problems, and learning checks within each chapter to test your understanding of the material. After completing each chapter, I felt that I was more than prepared to tackle the problems at the end of each chapter.
If you have to take statistics, you might as well try to make the experience as pleasant as possible. And this book will definitely help you maintain your sanity, while actually teaching you about statistics.

Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences Overview

By far the best-selling introduction to statistics for students in the behavioral and social sciences, this text continues to offer straightforward instruction, accuracy, built-in learning aids, and real-world examples. The Basic Practice of Statistics: w/Student CD Review

Have to have this text for an online college statistics course I am taking. Text is well written. It presents the concepts in a clear and through fashion making it easy to learn the material. Would recommend it even if you are not taking a course and just wanted to teach yourself a basic grasp of statistics. With this text you can do it.

The Basic Practice of Statistics: w/Student CD Overview

The Basic Practice of Statistics has become a bestselling textbook by focusing on how statistics are gathered, analyzed, and applied to real problems and situations—and by confronting student anxieties about the course's relevance and difficulties head on. With David Moore's pioneering "data analysis" approach (emphasizing statistical thinking over computation), engaging narrative and case studies, current problems and exercises, and an accessible level of mathematics, there is no more effective textbook for showing students what working statisticians do and what accurate interpretations of data can reveal about the world we live in. In the new edition, you will once again see how everything fits together. As always, Moore's text offers balanced content, beginning with data analysis, then covering probability and inference in the context of statistics as a whole. It provides a wealth of opportunities for students to work with data from a wide range of disciplines and real-world settings, emphasizing the big ideas of statistics in the context of learning specific skills used by professional statisticians. Thoroughly updated throughout, the new edition offers new content, features, cases, data sources, and exercises, plus new media support for instructors and students—including the latest version of the widely-adopted StatsPortal. The full picture of the contemporary practice of statistics has never been so captivatingly presented to an uninitiated audience.

Elementary and Middle School Mathematics: Teaching Developmentally (7th Edition) Review

If you learned math from traditional methods or algorithms, you must read this book. Math today is so different from how I learned it. This book explains how and why math has changed so much. I recommend it to teachers and parents alike. The author explains how to teach math using problem-solving. The method makes so much more sense than traditional mathematics. The book is filled with activities for every math concept and age that are easy to find, read, and use without much prep or prop. It also has ideas and resources for including literature and technology into math class.
I find it highly valuable as a 3rd year teacher of fifth grade. My district uses the Visual Math program, and this book has helped me understand why visual math works much more than any inservice. I have the fifth edition as a textbook for a methods class, and I'll never leave home without it.

Elementary and Middle School Mathematics: Teaching Developmentally (7th Edition) Overview

"It is fun to figure out the puzzle of how children go about making sense of mathematics and then how to help teachers help kids." John A. Van de Walle, Late of Virginia Commonwealth UniversityThis is the philosophy behind Elementary and Middle School Mathematics: Teaching Developmentally. John A. Van de Walle wrote this book to help students understand mathematics and become confident in their ability to teach the subject to children in kindergarten through eighth grade. Although he could not have foreseen the changes in mathematics teaching over the last three decades, he was at the forefront of the movement towards a constructivist view of teaching, or teaching developmentally. Constructivism says that children construct their own knowledge. They are not blank slates waiting to absorb whatever the teacher tells them. Teachers must understand both mathematics itself and how students learn mathematics in order to teach it effectively. Learning through problem solving is another major theme of this book. Students solve problems not just to apply mathematics, but also to learn new mathematics. Effective problems will take into account where students are, the problematic or engaging aspect of the problem must be due to the mathematics that the students are to learn and not be diluted by non-mathematical activities such as cutting or pasting, and the problem must require justifications and explanations for answers and methods. Learning then becomes an outcome of the problem solving process. The book also addresses in more detail than any other book on the market the effect that the trends of standards-based education, increased pressure to test, and increased teacher accountability have had on teaching mathematics. He addresses the 2000 NCTM Standards in depth, in Chapter 1 on Teaching Mathematics in the Era of the NCTM Standards, through the NCTM icon that appears in the margins throughout the text, and in two appendices in the back of the book. Chapter 5 on Building Assessment into Instruction has also been heavily revised to focus on increased testing pressure, creating more explicit links between objectives and assessment, and including assessments for students with special needs. Additionally, samples of Pearson's reformed-based curricula, Connnected Math Project (5-8) as well as Investigations (K-4), are featured in the text and on the myeducationlab site.Elementary and Middle School Mathematics: Teaching Developmentally is a book for doing math today–for both students who want to become teachers, and the students they will eventually teach. New To This Edition:NEW! Revises Chapter 5 on assessment--Discusses increased testing pressure and accountability, adds more information on equitable assessments, creates more explicit links between objectives and assessment, and includes assessments for students with special needs. NEW! Updates the Literature Connections feature to remove all out of print children's literature and include more non-fiction, poetry, and other types of readings.NEW! Weaves the Focal Points throughout the chapters as well as links them with the Big Ideas feature–Focal Points have also been added to the Appendix. NEW! Includes expanded coverage of working with diverse learners. NEW! Gives greater emphasis on dealing with math anxiety.

Multiplication Unplugged (CD/book kit) Review

I purchased this for use with my third grade class and I have to say that we played it so much I had to replace the tape! This collection of songs was put together with a great deal of thought. Each melody is different, very musical and very catchy. NOT the usual rap sounds that I had expected to hear. As a matter of fact, the tunes are so catchy they almost have a hypnotic effect. Even adults find themselves singing the times tables after class. (Looks a bit crazy, I know!)
What I especially like about these songs is that they also teach skip counting. The chorus of every single song is actually skip counting. So, not only do students learn all of their timetables, they can count by 6's, 7's, even 12's with no problem! The use of skip counting makes this tape perfect for grade three students as a primer and for grade four students as a resource and review.
The flip side of the cassette allows for students to test themselves.
I have had many students tell me that they do well on their tests because of these songs! I often recommend this cassette kit for home use as a fun way to review.

MyMathLab: Student Access Kit Review

Big waste of money!!!! Dont buy it!!! I purchased the Student Access Kit from Amazon because it was cheaper than both the college book store and the Course Compass website. But the access code I recieved was expierd. And Pearsons technical support personel are A-HOLES!!!! So I was only left with two choices, buy it from the wedsite for $78 dollars,or drop the class. But you cant really drop the class because the school says its required, and we are forced to pay for it!!!! So I bought access from the wedsite, and in the end I paid over $140 dollars. I'm an Amazon fan, but this is one product you should not buy from Amazon. If anyone reads this, my advice is to either buy access directly from the Course Compass website, or just buy the physical paper book and take a normal old fashioned class.

MyMathLab: Student Access Kit Overview

This access kit will provide you with a codeto get into MyMathLab,a personalized interactive learning environment, whereyou can learn mathematics and statistics at your own pace and measure your progress. In order to use MyMathLab, you will need a CourseID provided by your instructor; MyMathLab is not a self-study product and does require you to be in an instructor-led course. MyMathLab includes:
Interactive tutorial exercises: MyMathLab's homework and practice exercises are correlated to the exercises in the relevant textbook, and they regenerate algorithmically to give you unlimited opportunity for practice and mastery. Most exercises are free-response and provide an intuitive math symbol palette for entering math notation. Exercises include guided solutions, sample problems, and learning aids for extra help at point-of-use, and they offer helpful feedback when students enter incorrect answers.
