"Essentials of Sociology: A Down-To-Earth Approach," by James Henslin, is a great academic textbook. Henslin speaks directly to the reader and provides he/she with very interesting and insightful information. I am currently in a Sociology class where reading this book from cover to cover is required. Many would argue that having to read an entire textbook is awful, but this book has been an easy and enjoyable read. In this textbook you do not get flooded with information that is hard to understand, and Henslin does a great job of providing what he refers to as "down to earth sociology." I would recommend this textbook to any professor who is looking for the perfect textbook. I would also recommend students currently enrolled in a Sociology course to read this textbook, not only to prosper in your Sociology class, but also to gain knowledge of the different cultures and perspectives of the world.

Society: The Basics (10th Edition) Review

I have to use this book to teach Sociology 101, and it frustrates me to no end. The book is a failure in every aspect.
Introductory textbooks have to simplify things, of course, but Macionis oversimplifies to the point where my students feel that their intelligence has been insulted, and worst of all, don't realize that the sociological concepts he's talking about are more than simple stereotypes and platitudes. He writes at one point, essentially, that "white people don't understand poverty", while every college freshmen knows that poor whites do exist, and that the author must be either a racist or an idiot for thinking otherwise. But what does the cultural construct of race have to do with social hierarchy and economics? Macionis doesn't start that conversation, you'll have to do it yourself.
And that's the general flaw of the book, Macionis writes chapter after chapter of superficial lists of concepts, theorists, and vocabulary, but never does the real work of laying out key sociological theories in a simple and thorough way, which of course is exactly what a textbook is for. As a teacher, I'm then forced to spend class time laying out the basics that Macionis didn't cover, everything from culture to symbolic interactionism. He'll give a few paragraphs to Weber, Marx, or Freud, but doesn't actually explain them in any coherent way.
Some things are completely absent. Macionis doesn't mention some key concepts, like social capital, and doesn't explain at all how sociologists use statistics. With glaring omissions like those, it's obvious that Macionis simply doesn't understand sociology.
Finally, the book just isn't organized in any worthwhile way. Macionis puts the three big "approaches" (StrucFunc, Conflict, Interaction) in the first chapter, before the students have been exposed to enough material to understand why they're useful or important. Then the rest of the book is a laundry list of concepts, clumped into chapters without any real theme. For example, chapter 4 is about social interaction, status, role, emotion, and humor, but gender, class, race, social groups, and social stratification are spread out in other chapters. Sure, the students learn their vocabulary, but it becomes very difficult to connect the different concepts to each other.
Macionis offers snippets of narrative to help explain the concepts, but nothing big enough for actual analysis, so you'll have to do it instead. All in all, this book does nothing that it's supposed to do, and should not be bought by anyone.

There has to be over 10 typos on every spread and pages fall out every time I read it. It's a very interesting and insightful text that I wish I could enjoy. Instead, I find myself fixing typos and worrying about losing countless loose pages.

The book is really interesting and has a lot of information. I'm not really into reading an an art book but as I was flipping through the pages some of the chapters caught my attention. Evn when I wasn't doing homework I would pick it up sometimes just to look through it.

Living with Art Review

"Living With Art" is a fairly common textbook for intro to art classes, but it manages to rise above the level of a superficial survey. Even though it's probably intended as a textbook, the format doesn't waste space for someone wishing to brush up on their art history outside of the classroom. By that I mean there aren't lengthy end-of-chapter reviews, projects, or answer keys. Having read fairly thoroughly in the field of art and aesthetics, I was not expecting to get a lot out of this book. How much can one really say about art in a single volume? Surprisingly, Getlein says a lot in a very readable, succinct manner.
The book starts out with the impossible question, "what is art"? One of the most pleasant surprises was the discussion of the nature of art. With such a variety of opinions and ideas, to present the major ones in a clear, concise manner is something of an achievement in itself. It sets the tone for the later chapters which are a straightforward history from ancient cave drawings to Jeff Koons inflatable lobsters.
The book itself is quite nice. The images are reproduced with all their detail and color intact. Granted, the images are small, but they are also plentiful. Virtually every point is supported with an image as an example. This is one textbook that students will want to hang on to.
As an alternative, I would recommend E.H. Gombrich's "The Story of Art". It's probably superior in every respect, but it's also a little more difficult for beginners and casual readers. That's not to say that most readers couldn't pick it up and get a lot out of it.
Whether you're looking to brush up on your art history, or you're a student and this is a required purchase, you have a lot to look forward to. I've seen a lot of "comprehensive" histories, but "Living With Art" ranks amongst the top.

Big waste of money!!!! Dont buy it!!! I purchased the Student Access Kit from Amazon because it was cheaper than both the college book store and the Course Compass website. But the access code I recieved was expierd. And Pearsons technical support personel are A-HOLES!!!! So I was only left with two choices, buy it from the wedsite for $78 dollars,or drop the class. But you cant really drop the class because the school says its required, and we are forced to pay for it!!!! So I bought access from the wedsite, and in the end I paid over $140 dollars. I'm an Amazon fan, but this is one product you should not buy from Amazon. If anyone reads this, my advice is to either buy access directly from the Course Compass website, or just buy the physical paper book and take a normal old fashioned class.
