A Visit from the Goon Squad Review

After reading a few chapters of Jennifer Egan's latest novel, A Visit from the Goon Squad, I'd determined it was really a collection of linked stories more than a novel. Reading further, however, I saw the larger themes and the cohesiveness of the whole. It is, indeed, a novel, and an excellent one at that!
The book opens sometime in the recent past, and kleptomaniac Sasha is recounting a story to her therapist. Her former boss, record producer Benny Salazar, is mentioned in passing. The next chapter takes place several years earlier. Here Sasha is still Benny's assistant, and now it is he that is the first person narrator. Benny's just trying to get through a visit with his pre-teen son while mentally stifling a lifetime's worth of shame. He reflects, in passing, on his old high school gang, and in the next chapter we're back in San Francisco, circa 1980, with them. Benny wants Alice, but Alice wants Scotty. Scotty wants Jocelyn, but teenage Jocelyn is seeing Lou, a record producer more than twice her age. Don't worry, he'll get his chapter.
They all get a chapter or two or three. The story skips back and forth in time and place. The voice moves from first person to third person and even to second. Asides or characters that seemed tangential become central. And eventually several themes become apparent. The main one is not even subtle, as the traversing between points A and B is referenced several times in various ways. Scotty at one point asks, "I want to know what happened between A and B." An aging rock star's comeback album is entitled A to B. Even the two sections of this book, which might have been labeled "Part I" and "Part II" in another book, are here "A" and "B."
Another theme is the passage of time. The novel, as I mentioned earlier, moves back and forth freely along the timeline of characters' lives. Ranging from around 1980 to some point in the 2020's, we see the (often ravaging) effects of time.
One character states, "Time's a goon, right? Isn't that the expression?"
Another responds, "I've never heard that. 'Time's a goon?'"
"Would you disagree?"
"No."
The episodes that Egan spotlights are all, in some way, transformative for her characters. And let's talk about those characters. Reviewers like me will often extol "richly-drawn characters." It isn't until I read a novel like this--with insight so deep that you feel you know everything it's possible to know about these people based on brief snippets of their lives--that it really hits home what characterization is all about. Egan is THAT good.
Plus, there's the language. Her prose is truly a pleasure to read, no matter how absurd or at times unpleasant the subject matter. Egan's pointillistic novel roams from the New York music scene to an African safari; from the affluent suburbs to life on the edge in Naples, Italy; from a dictator's palace to our collective future. And in careening from place to place, time to time, and character to character in these linked lives, Jennifer Egan takes us from point A to point B.

The Wedding Book: The Big Book for Your Big Day Review

While I appreciated the information in the book, if you are considering a medium to small event then this is not the book for you. The author specifically states that weddings of around $5,000 can not be done and look good. This is a good book if you are going extravagant, but not if you are looking for simple.

The Wedding Book: The Big Book for Your Big Day Overview

Announcing the wedding bible: the most complete, lively, handholding, step-by-step guide to help every couple have a perfect wedding—no matter their budget, taste, or personalities. More than 2.2 million North American couples tie the knot each year; until now, only a mere fraction could work with celebrity wedding planner Mindy Weiss. But the significant fact is not Ms. Weiss's clientele, but the reason for it: She's so very good at what she does. And now she shares all of her hard-won experience, wisdom, inspiration, and style tips. The Wedding Book covers everything, in a voice filled with understanding: announcing the engagement, and what to do when someone isn't happy about the news; creating a budget; the pros and cons of destination weddings. Drawing up the guest list; planning the ceremony (and how to personalize your vows); menus to inspire; contracts and wedding insurance. Shopping for the dress, six great hairstyles, tuxedo vs. dinner jacket, the etiquette of invitations. Style tips for flowers, the tabletop, linens; a cake that says "you"; the crucial "Sixty Days Until I Do"; rehearsal dinner strategies; plus freezing the cake and preserving the bouquet. Today the average cost of a wedding is $25,000—at $19.95, The Wedding Book is the smartest investment a bride-to-be could make.

All You Need to Know About the Music Business: Seventh Edition Review

Speaking as a music business consultant, if I had to recommend only one music business book for someone who wanted to break into the music industry, this would be it. Donald S. Passman's All You Need to Know About the Music Business is one of what I refer to as the Holy Trinity of music business books, along with This Business of Music and Mark Halloran's Musician's Business and Legal Guide.
Passman is well respected within the industry, with musicians and music industry executives alike. He explains complex concepts and legal terms well and is adept at breaking down the complexities while maintaining terminology music industry professionals need to know.
While This Business of Music remains the comprehensive music industry Bible, its legalese can intimidate those new music business concepts or those who are unfamiliar with contract language. Therefore, Passman's All You Need to Know About the Music Business serves as a great starting point to the concepts and terminology of the music industry. I especially recommend it as a prerequisite to This Business of Music.

All You Need to Know About the Music Business: Seventh Edition Overview

Since the advent of file-sharing technology in the late 1990s, the music industry has been challenged to reinvent itself. What has it done? How have the record labels repositioned themselves to cope with these massive changes? How does all this affect creative artists? No one understands the music industry -- from the technology, to the legalities, to the new industry practices -- better than veteran music lawyer Donald Passman. In this completely revised and updated seventh edition of All You Need to Know About the Music Business, which the Los Angeles Times called "the industry bible" and which has sold hundreds of thousands of copies over the last eighteen years, Passman offers executives and artists, experts and novices alike the essential information they need not only to survive in these volatile and exciting times, but also to thrive. Drawing on his unique, up-to-the-minute experience as one of the most trusted advisors in the industry, Passman offers new information on: - The new 360 model of record deals, wherein record companies share in nonrecord revenue - The Copyright Royalty Board's latest decisions regarding online transmissions - The developing customs on new technologies such as streaming on demand, ringtones, and digital downloads - Updates on recording and publishing deals, as well as film music He also gives guidance on fundamental issues, such as how to: - Select and hire a winning team of advisors -- personal and business managers, agents, and attorneys -- and structure their commissions, percentages, and fees in a way that will protect you and maximize these relationships - Master the big picture and the finer points of record deals - Navigate the ins and outs of songwriting, music publishing, and copyrights - Maximize concert, touring, and merchandising deals Everyone in the business -- musicians, songwriters, entertainment lawyers, agents, promoters, publishers, managers, record company executives -- is scrambling to figure out what's going to happen in the future, and Passman is in the thick of these changes. Anyone interested in a music career will need this comprehensive and crucial guide to making it in one of the world's most dynamic industries.

Listening to Music (with Introduction to Listening CD-ROM) Review

Wright's book is a great introduction to the Western tradition, and a fair introduction to the world's music as a whole.
I know that there are cheaper alternatives out there, especially "The Vintage Guide to Classical Music," which I also recommend. But in this case, the CDs are worth the extra money. They correspond with the listening exercises in the book, and before long you really can tell an oboe from a french horn, a cello from a, well, a tuba, and so on. You learn to recognize and pay attention to meter, key, etc.... You really get on your way to understanding classical music, from which genuine appreciation can grow.
He also gives a fairly solid introducion to music as a whole, not only the classical Western "art music" tradition, but jazz, blues, rock, world music, and so on.
I can say that, to my knowledge, no other book out there does that.
I don't think any introduction is needed before this book; it can be the first you ever read on music even if you have no background whatsoever. The book to follow up this is, IMO, Fred Plotkin's "Classical Music 101" and Copland's classic, "What to Listen For in Music."
I learned a lot from this book and his course, which I failed when I was in college--evidently, attendance was mandatory after all! And I thought the teaching assistant having a crush on me would help.... Shame on me!

Listening to Music (with Introduction to Listening CD-ROM) Overview

The only music appreciation text on the market to include listening exercises throughout the book, Listening to Music (Sixth Edition) masterfully develops and refines the listening skills of students. Acclaimed for unparalleled clarity and accuracy, Wright succinctly covers traditional Western music from medieval to modern. Musical examples from each historical period are discussed within their social context, giving students a broad sense of not only the construction of a piece, but also its historical and cultural meaning. Concluding chapters discuss (1) popular music and its impact on musical globalization, and (2) music from East Asia, the Near East, Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America, drawing comparisons between Western and non-Western musical cultures. This chronological text actively develops listening skills in three important ways: First, Listening to Music includes detailed Listening Exercises throughout the book. These easy-to-grade exercises help students focus on important musical elements and episodes; by providing these exercises in the book, Craig Wright (who teaches music appreciation and uses these exercises himself) frees instructors to spend time on other aspects of class preparation. Second, a free "Introduction to Listening" CD comes packaged with each copy of the text. This CD plays all of the music and musical examples for the listening exercises in Part One, which introduces music fundamentals. Third, Active Listening Guides with streaming music and listening quizzes are available from the Schirmer Cengage Learning premium website to further challenge and test students.
About This Edition
New Features
Increasing the flexibility of the package, we now offer a two-CD set of core selections, a five-CD set of Western repertoire, and a separate popular/world CD. For the first time, music from the CD sets can be fully streamed on the premium website.
For the first time, the text's companion site links to a complete online course taught by Craig Wright at Open Yale Courses, an open-access selection of introductory courses taught by distinguished teachers and scholars at Yale University. The courses include exciting, live in-class performances and demonstrations.
More than 20 new, carefully selected pieces, as well as many fine new recordings of previous selections, have been added.
Expanded coverage of popular music, including Broadway musicals and film and video game music, as well as new full-chapter coverage of music of the Far East, the Near East and Africa, and the Caribbean and Latin America. Recordings include more internal tracks to facilitate navigation to significant events in each piece.
Margin references to the text website, as well as to online iTunes, Rhapsody, and YouTube playlists.
Completely redesigned Active Listening Guides with streaming music that engage students and help make the vocabulary and performances more accessible.

Additional Features
A split volume of the first 36 chapters, covering only Western (or classical) music, is available. Listening to Western Music will appeal to instructors who teach only classical music or who prefer a briefer and less expensive text that leaves world and popular music to other courses in the school curriculum.
The main text is organized into 43 brief chapters that are introduced by eight part openers, each featuring an introduction to the historical period and an illustrated timeline of musical and historic events.
The text is written by Craig Wright, a renowned music historian and teacher, who has been teaching music appreciation for more than 30 years. By teaching the course every year, Wright remains in touch with what today's students need to become personally engaged in the act of listening to music.
The musical repertoire selected by Craig Wright is a definitive collection of carefully chosen recordings by world-renowned artists. The complete Western repertoire is packaged in a five-CD set; a two-CD set provides a smaller, core selection of music for listening study; a separate CD provides selections from popular and non-Western music.
Full coverage of women as composers, performers, and patrons of music exposes students to the significant contributions of women to the music world. Female composers covered include Hildegard of Bingen, Beatriz of Dia, Barbara Strozzi, Clara Schumann, Ellen Zwilich, and Bessie Smith.
In-text Listening Guides help students understand and enjoy extended musical compositions on the CDs. Timing points within each guide allow the listener to follow along as the piece unfolds. The Listening Exercises that follow help students to develop and improve their listening skills through a self-test.

Adult All-In-One Course: Lesson-Theory-Technic: Level 1 Review

I used to play the clarinet in middle school. Now I'm 18 and it's been quite some time since I've read sheet music. Playing guitar for six years literally ruined my ability to read the stuff, because I would always use tabs instead. But eventually I grew jaded with the guitar, and I decided to choose a new and fresh direction -- the piano!
This book is very well-written, and leaves no gaps. Within just a few days I found myself relearning all that I had forgotten from band class years before, and I've now reached the point where I know more than I did! And I haven't even finished the book yet!
Plus, it tests you on theory and technique. You get to fill in parts of the book, which really helps you get involved with what your learning.
One reviewer downrated this book because of the song choices, and its accompanying CD. I feel that this is in err. I believe the song choices are just as good as any. If the tunes were familiar, then they wouldn't be as challenging to learn. And as for the CD...I did notice that the piano parts are rather quiet, but I always thought this was because it was a play-along CD (which is what I use it as). It's as good as it needs to be.
Besides, the pieces get more interesting as you progress, some of the final pieces being "Greensleeves", "Scarborough Fair", "The Entertainer" and "Amazing Grace" (and written in a way so that each hand will be dually occupied). And by the end of the third book in the series, you'll be playing some of Beethoven's most popular pieces, like "Fur Elise" and "Moonlight Sonata"!
Also -- something that concerned me when I bought this book: do you need a full-fledged piano? The answer is...no!! A sizable keyboard will do you just fine. But, you just might find yourself looking to buy a real piano once you delve deeper into these lessons...because this series really does inspire and nurture a great love for this amazing instrument.
If you're looking to learn the piano and can't afford a teacher, don't have time for one, or you just learn better on your own -- this is a must-have aid to your learning.
Good luck, and I wish you well in your learning!! :)

Music: An Appreciation, 6th Brief Edition Review

I've seen the unabridged version of this book and it's as big as an encyclopedia. The Brief Edition does well to summarize the important points in music history; though the meat of the book is centered in the classical (Renaissance, Baroque, Romantic, Classical, Opera) and merely touches on the more modern componets like jazz and rock. Still, the book and accompanying CD are excellent for those wanting to get a light but informative immersion in the classic music world and learn a little bit about its most famous composers.

Music: An Appreciation, 6th Brief Edition Overview

Whether from a concert stage or at the front of a classroom, Roger Kamien knows how to reach an audience--blending intelligence and passion to lift music from the page and bring it to life. His unique combination of artistic and teaching skills makes Music: An Appreciation, Brief Edition an invaluable tool for students wanting to learn more about music.
This best-selling textbook introduces students to perceptive listening and provides an engaging introduction to musical elements, forms, and stylistic periods. It is organized chronologically, but individual sections can be addressed in any order, for a variety of teaching approaches. Musical notation is included but is not required to understand the popular listening guides featured in the text, which focus students' attention on musical events as they unfold.
The Online Learning Center for this text provides open access for all students to many activities and video instrument demonstrations in addition to quiz and study materials for each chapter..

Norton Anthology of Western Music (Sixth Edition) (Vol. 1: Ancient to Baroque) Review

I remember the First edition of Grout's "A History of Western Music"--it was the main text in use when I was a first year undergraduate student. In fact it was one of the standard texts in use at a large number of colleges. The good news is that I was pleased to see the excellent changes. I didn't have to look far to find my first (1 st) edition Grout ( I've used it still until I purchased this new 6th edition several weeks ago)--there are 101 more pages of text. In reality there is much more to look at as the 1st edition book was only 6 x 9 inches. The new 6th Edition is larger: 7 1/4 by 10 1/2 inches. In addition, there is a highly attractive layout; the best feature? A wonderful highlighted-in-blue area (appearing every 40 pages or so) in which the composers themselves speak about a wonderful range of topics such as Francois Couperin 'On the Union of the Italian and French Styles' or, the great J.S. Bach's description of one the church service's he organized (known as an 'Order of Service') taken from a collection of his memoirs.
Lastly, I enjoyed seeing the addition of an overall "Time-Line of Events" which prefaces each unit. This includes not only items from music, but any historical event which remotely affected change in music or musical thought.
My singluar critical note is perhaps something which the authors had little time to devote to. The 6th edition ends with composers who, in this reviewer's opinion, were certainly not 'mainstream'--like John Cage (1912-1992) (who's infamous "4'33" is actually a period of four minutes and thirythree seconds in which the 'performer' remains totally silent). Cage was popular in the late 70s more for his extremism than anything else. The last paragraph of the book does state, in effect, that composers are being more sensitive to their audiences. (No doubt! Their INsensitivity nearly killed classical music in the 70s) As with any textbook, deadlines must limit speculation--there will undoubtedly be a 7th edition to address more changes in our musical world.
Lastly, the reader should take note that the current author of this work, Claude V. Palisca, is also the author of the "Norton Anthology of Music" which can be used in conjunction with this text. Also, the publisher, W.W.Norton and Co., has a website for readers (which is also mentioned in the text: http://www.wwnorton.com/grout.). The website is still active (I just visited it) and has a wealth of information and listening resources---too bad we didn't have this back in 1967 !

Workbook for Tonal Harmony: With an Introduction to Twentieth-Century Music, Sixth Edition Review

The workbook and text for Tonal Harmony is the standard for many music programs. My aspiring musician lost his first copy and needed it so badly, that I had to buy a second. The only book he uses more is his Music Business Text, which is where they learn to be a profitable musician.
Even if you don't need this text for a class, it is a valuable read for the beginning/aspiring musician.

Workbook for Tonal Harmony: With an Introduction to Twentieth-Century Music, Sixth Edition Overview

The Workbook provides assignments for each chapter of Tonal Harmony by Stefan Kostka and Dorothy Payne helping student to master the content of the textbook. Each set of Workbook exercises in the Workbook is closely correlated with the corresponding chapter in the text and with a particular Self-Test within the chapter. Each set of Workbook exercises begins with problems that are similar to those found in the corresponding Self-Test, but the Workbook exercises also include problems that are too open-ended for the Self-Test format as well as more creative types of compositional problems. Assignments are set up so that students can tear out individual assignments and submit them for grading without interfering with other assignments. Selected Workbook exercises are available in Finale templates though the Online Learning Center, and each new copy of the workbook comes with a discount code for purchase of Finale notation software at a special low price. The Workbook includes a CD containing audio recordings of the many assignments.

Tonal Harmony Review

I had to use this in college for my music theory I,II and III classes. It is very in depth and requires extensive study. This is definately not for the faint hearted musician. This new version is much better than the one I had because it has CD's for fast access to the music examples. The older additions came with tape cassettes. Also this new book includes CD Roms for computer learning. The book includeds much information. It is a text book and is not meant to be used as a self-learning tool. I would reccomend this only if you are in college and need it for your music theory classes.

Tonal Harmony Overview

For nearly two decades Tonal Harmony has been the leading text for the two-year theory curriculum for music majors.Used at nearly 800 schools, Tonal Harmony has been consistently praised for its practicality and ease of use for student and instructor alike. The straightforward approach is supported by well-chosen examples and thoughtful exercises, and the total presentation is compatible with differing teaching styles and theoretical points of view.In addition, a set outstanding ancillaries, which include a collection of audio examples on CD (for both the text and workbook) and an extensive Instructor's Manual, round out the comprehensive teaching package.

A History of Western Music (Eighth Edition) Review

i'm just a neuropsychologist who is interested in music - very interested, but not a formal student or teacher. I've studied clarinet, piano, recorder in some detail... I got this for an overview and general grounding, and also in the hopes of being able to obtain a good deal of detail when i wanted it. for the most part it does both, but, as to the latter - depth/detail - some things are covered in great detail and others in what i would call a cursory manner, with a couple sentences. In some cases, i myself know there is much more easily available, just from my lifetime of perusing liner notes, watching PBS or listening to NPR, the occasional book, and other ways of learning about music. Of course, the editors/writers had to pick and choose, but i just think some areas are under-represented; the book is already big so there would be little downside to it being even half again bigger. Maybe i just hoped for more because i already knew what was in there. My background is admittedly uneven.
My major complaint, however, which probably should prompt even more "points" knocked off the rating, is that there are accompanying materials - the written/graphic "anthology" and the "recorded" anthology, both of which i would like to get, but they are expensive and it is VERY (!!!!) difficult to determine exactly which of each of these really goes with the 8th edition i got. Everything seems to have different editions, and there are the "lite" version (something like 6 cds) and the "complete" version (like 15 cds or something), i think of both. the reason to be sure is that in the margin there are (very helpful) indications where in the written/graphic and in the recorded anthology you can find the score (written/graphic) or music (recorded) materials that are being discussed. If you pick a certain instance of this, then try to go where you might order the written or recorded anthology - guess what! - you do not immediately find anything that looks right. Not to mention that i believe on the Norton site the current edition of the history itself is - or was last month - the 7th edition. I just don't see the reason for all this chaos and confusion. Once they get it figured out and clear, i will be buying, because it is good material, but this is almost like dealing with Microsoft! Why not say, 8th edition history goes with 5th edition "lite" cds, or something - in a chart?
If someone actually has found out what to buy, or somehow bought the right thing by chance, you are probably giving this 5 stars (because i'm sure it's great), and probably you think i am nuts. If so, how about tipping me off - what are the specifics (name and edition#) for the complete written and recorded anthologies that go with the book, 8th edition?
JHW

A History of Western Music (Eighth Edition) Overview

The Eighth Edition of A History of WesternMusic is a vivid, accessible, and richly contextual view of music in Western culture.

Building on his monumental revision of the Seventh Edition, PeterBurkholder has refined an inspired narrative for a new generation ofstudents, placing people at the center of the story. The narrative of AHistory of Western Music naturally focuseson the musical works, styles, genres, and ideasthat have proven most influential, enduring, and significant-but it also encompasses a wide rangeof music, from religious to secular, fromserious to humorous, from art music to popularmusic, and from Europe to the Americas. With asix-part structure emphasizing the music'sreception and continued influence, Burkholder'snarrative establishes a social and historicalcontext for each repertoire to reveal its legacy and its significance today.

The Singing Bible (Focus on the Family) Review

More than 50 great songs in numerous styles take you and your children through the Bible from beginning to end. You can't do better than that. I don't know why it's only marketed as 7-and-below. I'd say all the way up to 12 or so (and the adults will enjoy it too.) A Sunday School group could cover this over a year, have a great deal of fun with it, and develop superb Bible knowledge. It is also packed with humor and great characters in a musical-within-a-musical format.
The Osbornes have created a marvellous resource here and I feel their wonderful work has been poorly served by their publisher's marketers. For years I tried in vain to get copies to give to children in my Children's Church class. I get the feeling it's becoming more widely available again. I'd like to see it on CD or MP3 download.
Match this to a Children's Bible in 365 readings and you have the tools for excellent broad-spectrum Bible knowledge for your children. It worked for us, and we had a great time using it.

Wee Sing America Review

[...]
Basically, it's one of the few CDs we have owned that both kids and adults have loved. We play it several times per week in the car. You WANT your kids to know the words to these songs. And you want to know them, too. (And as a bonus: Within a short amount of time, you'll all have memorized the 50 states, in alphabetical order.)

Norton Recorded Anthology of Western Music (Sixth Edition) (Vol. 1: Ancient to Baroque) Review

I ordered the Cds from Amazon for a college class. When I received the CD's I found that 4 of them defective. I returned them to amazon for free and was able to get a new copy very quickly. But when I received the second copy of the cds again there was a track that did not play. I would not order these unless you can return them.

Just Kids Review

Before she became the Godmother of Punk, Patti Smith was just some girl who came to New York in search of herself. We have a tendency to view her as always having been a rebel, guitar in hand, spouting her distinctive mix of poetry and invective at society. But the reality was that Smith came to New York as a refugee, uncertain of who she was and what she wanted to be. That's sometimes a bit hard to believe or realize, but in "Just Kids" Smith reveals just that: she wasn't one half as confident then as she is now, and that she had no idea what she was going to do once she arrived in New York. While this is true of almost everyone from her generation, it is somehow shocking and bizarre to ponder. More interesting was that her first lover and partner in New York was none other than future photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. The bulk of "Just Kids" is Smith's recollection of Smith's early years in New York with Mapplethorpe and how they came to create their own image as artists and autuers and to craft their image and art. Again, it seems weird to think of either of them as being anything other than fully formed individuals, and that, in and of itself, seems supremely bizarre. We seldom think of the intervening events that came to create them as artists, yet here is Patti Smith lying bare exactly how she came to be what she became. The result is a fascinating and spellbinding narrative that you can scarcely set down. Ultimately Smith learns that Mapplethorpe is gay and both go on to find their own loves and their own directions in life and in art. In that degree "Just Kids" feels like only the beginning of a captivating story, the transition to another chapter, and I sincerely hope, a transition to another volume of memories, as I'm no doubt certain that Smith has a wealth of other memories than span well into the 80s, 90s and beyond. But for now I'm heartened to hear what she has to say as for now, the era before she became Patti Smith. And rather than being a trip down memory lane, "Just Kids" reminds us that everyone had to start somewhere, and success is never easy or certain. Smith's prose also wonderfully captures an era of New York City that has largely faded to the mists of time and memory. It is a time and place I was glad to revisit for a while. Immensely enjoyable and quite readable "Just Kids" is probably one of the best rock autobiographies I've ever read!
