HarperCollins Study Bible - Student Edition: Fully Revised & Updated Review

For years this text has been a staple of many a classrooms. This text and the notes themselves are superb. Hands down this was for many years a spectacular production. However all this is ruined by HarperCollins recent production of this text with shoddy design and materials.
The version listed here has been significantly changed. The layout is cramped at best. The margins are minuscule leaving little to no room for personal comments or notes within the text. Which seems kind of ridiculous for a student bible not having room for the student to make notes in. They have additionally changed the font in this text making it even more difficult to read. It is to narrow now and plays havoc on the eyes.
The maps are horrible! Instead of drawn maps they have been rendered by digital maps that have been pixelated horribly! I am all for digital maps but don't do it in such away that when you look at it everything is blurry and you can't see anything. The maps as they are just seem to take up space. This could have been good had they taken sometime and made good maps. But no we are stuck with horrible maps.
And the space between the columns have been significantly reduced. To the point it is easy to miss the ending of one and continue reading into the other.
The text itself and notes are absolutely wonderful. The quality and production of this text is horrific. So all I can say is buyer beware.

NRSV XL with Apocrypha (burgundy) Review

I told myself I would never buy another English Bible, but when I saw this new edition of the NRSV upon its release I knew I had found my next Bible for devotional reading. The NRSV is still the English translation of choice (I say this as a Professor of New Testament and Greek) in terms of the breadth and excellence of translators involved, the avoidance of certain problematic renderings (e.g., resolving "the faith of Christ" as "faith in Christ," as in the NIV), and the attentiveness to inclusive language (though I would have retained the use of kinship language for "brothers" everywhere as "brothers and sisters" rather than "believers," "beloved," or the like). The print layout is superb, and the binding seems sturdy and lays open very well. I would highly recommend choosing THIS edition over the edition lacking the Apocrypha or the "Catholic Edition," which includes most of the Apocrypha but lacks, for example, 3 and 4 Maccabees (included here), essential texts for understanding tensions facing Diaspora Judaism and some of the responses formulated by the faithful to address those tensions. Readers who want access to maps and study helps can still use the aids in the back of the smaller print Bible that they, like me, can't read so well anymore. :) Regarding the appearance, the image shows the Bible as it comes in a cardboard wrap: the front cover is actually solid tan.

The Jesus Storybook Bible: Every Story Whispers His Name Review

I love every aspect of this Bible. The illustrations by Jago are both charming and intriguing. There are about fifty stories, a good balance. The text itself is exactly what I want my children to hear, theologically. I love this line from the very first chapter. "The Bible isn't mainly about you and what you should be doing. It's about God and what he has done." AMEN.
The subtitle is "Every Story Whispers His Name" and indeed, every story does. "No, the Bible isn't a book of rules, or a book of heroes. The Bible is most of all a Story. It's an adventure story about a young Hero who comes from a far country to win back his lost treasure. It's a love story... You see, the best thing about this Story is -- it's true. There are lots of stories in the Bible, but all the stories are telling one Big Story. The Story of how God loves his children and comes to rescue them."
She goes on to say that the center of the story is a baby who is like the missing piece to a puzzle that makes all the other pieces fit together, and to reveal the beautiful picture. She stays true to this aim, pointing to Christ with every story, helping children to see the whispers of redemption through it all. If you buy just one Children's Story Bible, I'd commend this one to you.

The Bhagavad-Gita : Krishna's Counsel in Time of War (Bantam Classics) Review

'Bhagavad-Gita' which means `Celestial Song' or `Song of theLord' is an immensely popular sacred text in India.....
What makes 'Bhagavad-Gita' so popular? To begin with, its lines are steeped in extraordinary lyrical grace. The eight syllable or occasionally eleven syllable quarters exude a rare poetic energy.
Secondly, the text centres around two very popular characters from Indian religion and mythology: Krishna and Arjuna.
Thirdly, the context , that is the great war scene of 'Mahabharata' adds to the drama of the narrative.
Apart from all these, the most endearing quality of 'Gita' lies in the practicality of its teachings for all times. The great war is about to begin, but the hero Arjuna is beset with self-doubt, hesitation and remorse. Krishna, his charioteer, engages him in a long dialogue, which forms the main body of the narrative. Krishna's counsel not only dispels Arjuna's fears and doubts, it also provides solution to the eternal struggle between the spiritual and material in every human being. It answers all existential questions of man. Each man is facing a battle of Mahabharata within himself in his everyday life. To live, man has to fight, for life is a battle in which forces of good and evil are at constant war.
Krishna's advice for man is to be deeply interested in his action and moral duty, yet to remain inwardly unattached, because man's real enemy is desire due to attachment. This enemy can be overcome by arming oneself with discipline and acting in a manner so as to cross the narrow limits of desire. Man must perform his duty disinterestedly, without selfish desire and without losing sight of ultimate spiritual reality. This al reality is surrender to Krishna himself. Krishna says,
`Relinquishing all sacred duties to me, make me your only refuge; do not grieve, for I shall free you from all evils.' (XVIII, 66)
'Bhagavad-Gita' is much more than my summary -- it is in fact the essence of Hinduism. 'Gita' touches upon all the basic concepts of Hindu religion such as duty (dharma), discipline (yoga), action (karma), knowledge (jnana) and devotion (bhakti).
Barabara Stoler Miller's translation of 'The Bhagavad-Gita' faithfully retains the charm, lyricality and essence of the original. For the Western reader, the `Introduction' and the `Afterword' titled `Why Did Henry David Thoreau Take 'The Bhagavat Gita' to Walden Pond,' comes as a great help for understanding the poem itself and realising the guiding principles of Hinduism. The section on keywords is in fact an extension of the lucid commentary given in the beginning.
I recommend this translated version not only to the new readers of 'Gita', but also to those, who, bogged down by the numerous explanations of the scripture, seek a fresh look at it.
