The Truth About SIX PACK ABS - Years of research into body fat reduction and abdominal development all combined into your own personal six pack guide Review

I used to often buy all the workout magazines you see in the stores. Abs in 4 weeks! Eat the junk and still get a six pack! All these cover stories get you to buy the magazine, but in reality these are unrealistic goals. Sure if you run 15 miles a days and were to eat just grapes and prune juice you would lose weight, but hardly anyone has the time to do these plans or would want to eat such boring food for any protracted period of time. I have brought many workout books over the years and they tend to concentrate on the exercises and when it comes to diet its eat more protein, eat less junk, thanks for the cash, see you later.
This book is different. Unlike the recycled articles in the magazines written by pot-bellied journalists. Achieving a six pack is within your grasp if you have the discipline to stick to the principles laid down in this book.
The exercise section is well thought out and easy to follow, the diet section is in depth but straightforward.

Chosen Review

This book does have a sincere story to save children but the main line is into the minds of those who do evil through psychic detective work at a level of Belief. That is how I summarize the entire book. Totally fiction but not a phony, the writing is excellent and real as it can get in doubtful territory. I am impressed and did enjoy reading from beginning to end, starts off rather rigorous, tapers then explodes when discovering the Predator who knows how to thwart the psych with his own power. The predator is revealed and explored mentally and is quite interesting as well as page turning.
All the characters are very well intro'd in this book, and well understood, the books strong point. What was so good is that nothing is predictable , surprises wildly yet maintains that realism. I got right into it from page one and I personally need that in any book to continue and that's why I am reviewing this one, it is a taker from the start.
The story in general is solid and never shallow or disappointing.
This is also an intelligent, realistic read that I am satisfied with in the sense I got something out if it, something real about a problem we truly do have in our society of predators. I also want to recommend a very similar and rewarding book by Cota, Predator Down, a real story where they chase this guy back and forth from Mexico with a horrific but educating theme. Predator Down

Chosen Overview

Shy and introverted Mariah Carpenter has concealed a hidden talent from childhood that, according to her mother, would brand her a freak. Now a fateful encounter has caused her secret skill-an extraordinary psychic ability-to become greatly enhanced. Suddenly, she has a purpose for her gift, as her vision gives her the ability to find kidnapped children telepathically. But is this a blessing or a curse? When Mariah's fourth finding is filmed by the FBI and the recording is stolen and sold to a broadcast journalist, Mariah's worst nightmare becomes a reality. She is acclaimed worldwide as a saint and messenger from God-and vilified as the Antichrist whose powers must be quelled. Meanwhile, another government agency has its own covert agenda for Mariah'. In the midst of all of this, Mariah has a series of horrifying nightmares, culminating in the discovery of an ingenious serial killer, one who somehow prevents Mariah from finding out who and where he is.Locating this murderer before he kills again becomes Mariah's obsession, one that threatens to consume her--and could even destroy her. Chosen introduces readers to a remarkably complex, achingly human, and absolutely unforgettable heroine. Bursting with tension, danger, and the thrill of the unexplained, Chosen is a singular reading experience.

Welcome to the Monkey House (Kurt Vonnegut series) Review

I'm not a huge fan of short story collections since I'd much rather sit through a single story throughout all those pages instead of a series of tales that at best tend to be hit or miss and wildly inconsistent. However there are some writers that I will acknowledge are masters of the form, Theodore Sturgeon, Ray Bradbury and of course Kurt Vonnegut (that's not even counting the "classic" short story masters who I haven't read) who's novels sometimes come across as longish short stories anyway. Most of these stories were written early in his career, in the fifties or sixties and it looks like someone actually made an attempt to sequence them instead of just dumping them in chronoloogical order, thus there's a bit of a procession as you move along, finally ending with the darkly hopeful 'Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow". Along the way you'll find that the quality is quite high and many of these are very much vintage Vonnegut. He mixes around with genres and so SF exercises such as "Harrison Bergeron" and "Welcome to the Monkey House" (classics both) sit comfortably next to more typical stories such as "Manned Missiles" (which gets my vote for most effective story in the collection and surprised me the most). There aren't really any clunkers here, some are simpler than others and will pass you by without much impact, but the majority all have some moment or theme to recommend them as keepers and give you something to think about long after you've finished them. Sure, most of the stories were written in a different time but regardless of the SF or the Cold War backdrop or whatever, these are essentially timeless and deserved to be read again and again.

Welcome to the Monkey House (Kurt Vonnegut series) Overview

The short-story collection WELCOME TO THE MONKEY HOUSE (1968) incorporates almost completely Vonnegut's 1961 "Canary in a Cathouse," which appeared within a few months of SLAUGHTERHOUSE-FIVE and capitalized upon that breakthrough novel and the enormous attention it suddenly brought. Drawn from both specialized science fiction magazines and the big-circulation general magazines (Saturday Evening Post, Colliers, etc.) which Vonnegut had been one of the few science fiction writers to sell, the collection includes some of his most accomplished work. The title story may be his most famous - a diabolical government asserts control through compulsory technology removing orgasm from sex - but Vonnegut's bitterness and wit, not in his earlier work as poisonous or unshielded as it later became, is well demonstrated. Two early stories from Galaxy Science Fiction Magazine and one (the famous "Harrison Bergeron") from Fantasy & Science Fiction show Vonnegut's careful command of a genre about which he was always ambivalent, stories like "More Stately Mansions" or "The Foster Portfolio" originally published in Collier's demonstrates Vonnegut's ability to work within the confines and formula of a popular fiction of which he was always suspicious. Vonnegut's affection for humanity and bewilderment at its corruption are manifest in these early works. Several of these stories (those which appeared in Collier's) were commissioned by Vonnegut's Cornell college classmate and great supporter Knox Burger, also born in 1922.Kurt Vonnegut (1922-2007) is perhaps the most beloved American writer of the 20th century. His audience has built steadily since his first pieces in the 1950's. Vonnegut's 1968 novel, SLAUGHTERHOUSE-FIVE has become a canonic war novel - with Joseph Heller's CATCH-22 the truest and darkest of all to have come from World War II. Vonnegut began as a science fiction writer and his early novels PLAYER PIANO and THE SIRENS OF TITAN were so categorized even as they appealed to a young audience far beyond science fiction readers. In the 1960's he became the writer most identified with the Baby Boomer generation. Like the novels of Mark Twain, Kurt Vonnegut's large body of work is now understood as unified. There is a consistency to his satirical insight, humor and anger which makes his work synergistic. The more of Kurt Vonnegut's work you read, the more the work resonates and the more you wish to read. Vonnegut's reputation - like Twain's - will grow steadily through the decades to come as his work grows in relevance, truthfulness and searing insight.

Cat's Cradle (Kurt Vonnegut series) Review

Cat's Cradle is by far the best Vonnegut novel that I have yet read. Blending his patented wry humor with acute social insight presented in an absurd fantasy world, Vonnegut has written an exceptional novel of love, lies, and the self destruction of mankind. The story centers around the narrator, Jonah, who is called by name once in the entire book. We are told in the beginning that he is writing a book on the events of the day the first atomic bomb was dropped on Japan. His research leads him to a correspondence with Newt Hoenikker, the midget son of Doctor Felix Hoenikker, father of the atomic bomb. After meeting with Newt, destiny leads our protagonist to the impoverished island republic of San Lorenzo, where among other adventures, he finds religion, falls in love, and becomes president. All of this by itself would make for a very entertaining book, but it is not in the story line that Vonnegut's genius lies. Cat's Cradle is rife with painfully accurate insights into the institutions that our society holds so dear, such as, religion, politics, and science. Vonnegut invents for the inhabitants of San Lorenzo a brand new religion based completely and admittedly on "foma", or lies. This wouldn't be so shocking, except for the fact that this "bokonism" seems to make perfect sense. Other Vonnegut ironies pervade the book and are too elaborate to go into. Kurt Vonnegut is my favorite author of all time. Cat's Cradle is one of his funniest, most absurd, and frightening novels. This book truly causes one to stop and think about the things that one holds as unquestionably true. All of the incredible people, places, things, and ideas in Cat's Cradle are intricately woven into a perfect tapestry that sums up and spells out many of mankind's self-created problems in 191 pages.

The Queen's Lady Review

I'm a big fan of Judith Merkle Riley and Susan Wiggs, and I took notice when I saw their blurbs on the cover of "The Queen's Lady." However, I have been told since that a lot of times writers are paid up front for blurbs, without having read the book in question. I certainly hope that's the case for Ms. Riley and Ms. Wiggs, because the "Lady" really is a tramp, and not worth your hard-earned dollars. If you must read it, check it out at the library, but don't say I didn't warn you.
There's no shortage of plot- in fact, there's too much of it. The novel lurches from incident to incident, and comes across like a creepy hybrid of "A Man for All Seasons" and Paul Verhoeven's "Flesh and Blood." Honor Larke, the "heroine"- and I use the term loosely- is set upon by disaster after disaster within the first few chapters, including being orphaned, kidnapped, raped, and having her inheritance stolen from her. She manages to become Sir Thomas More's ward, and although she thinks More is the best daddy she ever had, he has the hots for her. She kind of has the hots for him too, but before we are subjected to a scene of them in bed together, she finds out he was the guy responsible for burning her best friend at the stake (which is described in disgusting detail). I guess that's kind of understandable why that would sour things.
Anyway, Honor decides that she must become the Savior of the Lutherans, and runs around rescuing Lutherans from being arrested (sort of like a Scarlet Pimpernel in a farthingale, I suppose). However, at the same time she's Catherine of Aragon's #1 lady-in-waiting, hence the title. Yet Honor decides that she must bring Protestantism into England, that Queen Cathy is cool and all, but she must sacrifice her friend to the greater good of routing the Evil Catholic Church from Old Blighty's shores; and part of that entails buddying up with Thomas Cromwell and doing her best to forward Anne Boleyn's ambitions. I found it amusing, in a way, that this scheming, backstabbing character had the name of "Honor," but no one in the book comments on the irony of that. I also found it amusing that she's able to do all of this, without her guardian More having a clue as to what she's up to. Does this guy live in a cave, or what? If he's so crazy about her as we're led to believe, wouldn't he be keeping tabs on what she's doing?
Most of the book is concerned with Honor rushing hither and thither, rescuing Protestants while she talks about how much she hates More. There's a romantic interest, some guy named Richard Thornleigh, who's saddled with a crazy wife who dies conveniently. Honor is such an awesome gal that she proposes to Richard two days after his wife kicks it, even though he protests that his wife died only two days before. But she exclaims that she's dead, they're alive, that they must live for today, etc. Of course, we are supposed to believe that Honor is assertive and filled with joie de vivre or something, and not a callous, manipulative bitch. I am sure the author means well, but the characterization is really very poorly done.
It just gets worse as the book goes along. Honor gets into Big Trouble and has to flee the country to Germany, where she ends up in Munster, among a commune of lunatic Anabaptists. The book actually gets quite interesting here, because this a time and place you never see in historical fiction. But after a great deal of excitement, Honor realizes that religion sucks, there is no soul, and GOD IS A LIE! It is all absolutely as subtle as a brick hurled through a stained glass window, and I threw the book against the wall at that moment. I hate books with an agenda, and the author of "Lady" shoves hers down your throat.
The ending of the book comes pretty quickly after that, with our hero and "heroine" galloping off into the sunset (but not before a final confrontation with Sir Thomas More, who gropes her, wallows in his own misery, and hallucinates the "imaginary" heavens, to show us what a pathetic, screwed-up martyr he is). I have never felt that strongly about More, but I am offended Ms. Kyle feels it necessary to trash the man and his beliefs, just to make those of her heroine (and presumably, her own) look better.
She does try to assert in the end that More's immortality lies not in his obviously wrong Catholic faith, but in his brilliant book "Utopia." If it is true that one's immortality depends upon on the quality of the books one leaves behind, then I'm afraid that Ms. Kyle is clearly doomed, as "The Queen's Lady" is trash. Avoid at your own peril. There are many other books by Judith Merkle Riley and Susan Wiggs to read instead.

The Queen's Lady Overview

London, 1527. Marry or serve: for Honor Larke, the choice is clear. Unwilling to perish of boredom as an obedient wife, she leaves the home of her ward to attend Her Majesty, Queen Catherine of Aragon. But life at Henry VIII's court holds more than artifice for an intelligent observer, and Honor knows how to watch--and when to act...Angered by the humiliation heaped upon her mistress as Henry cavorts with Anne Boleyn and presses Rome for a divorce, Honor volunteers to carry letters to the Queen's allies. It's a risky game, but Honor is confident--until she's proven wrong by dashing courtier Richard Thornleigh--a man who awakens her heart, and who also has something to hide. . .. Swept into a tide of intrigue and danger that stretches across Europe, the Queen's lady is about to learn everything: about pride, passion, greed--and the conscience of the King... "Weaves a fast-paced plot through some of the most harrowing years of English history." --Judith Merkle Riley"Excellent, exciting, compellingly readable." --Ellen Jones"Riveting, heady, glorious, inspired." --Susan Wiggs Includes a Reading Group Guide!

Declaring Spinsterhood Review

What if people were truly rational and always made good choices without having to go through all the messiness of EXPERIENCE and real life. Could we just skip the embarrassment, please? No, thank you. That would eliminate all the fun of observing the characters in Jamie Lynn Braziel's Declaring Spinsterhood as they stumble and fumble through the same kind of experiences that we survived, or fervently hope we will survive. Whether the reader identifies with the delightful but confused Emma or steadfast (and confused) Brian or even Emma's mother (who wants Emma to be happy in the socially approved manner) this well written and delightful journey through the hazards of misreading other people as well as ourselves is fun to read and experience. Braziel has produced a book that is lucidly written with a clear understanding of human strengths and a generous dollop of forgiveness for human frailties.

Declaring Spinsterhood Overview

Product DescriptionEmma Bailey is thirty years old and single. No problem for her, but a point of round-the-clock contention for her mother, her family, and too many of her friends. In Jamie Lynn Braziel's Declaring Spinsterhood, the terminal illness known as "old maid" is explored from every angle, and the result is a compassionate, compelling, and wickedly funny novel. Emma may stand up before all and declare her intention to never marry, but what about that little place in her heart reserved for Brian Davis? Sure, Brian's seeing someone, and Emma is not a vixen who breaks up relationships, but would it be so terrible if Brian returned the interest? Rather than bide her time, Emma dates'and dates. Some of the men are charming, others less so. With her vow of spinsterhood more a noose than a friend, Emma musters her courage and moves on. That is, until the unforeseen throws up the biggest obstacle of her life: love.About the AuthorBorn in Fort Worth, Texas, Jamie Lynn Braziel attended Southeastern Oklahoma State University, where she majored in English and minored in French. A financial analyst, the author is working towards a master's degree in accounting.

Good Girls Don't (Donovan Family) Review

Coming off a string of Mary Poppins heroines ("practically perfect in every way"), it was refreshing to read about a young woman who made mistakes. Some BIG ones! Some writers would have presented Tessa in a way that made me hate her, but Dahl made me like Tessa and empathize with her even when I wanted to shake her. Several times in this book, I felt like shouting, "No, don't do it!" as one does watching characters in horror movies. But I understood the character's insecurity enough that I believed she would make those bad choices.
From the beginning of the book, I liked the hero. Luke is a good guy, taking heat for things that other people think he did wrong; I really admired him for keeping his mouth shut when defending his reputation would potentially make someone else look bad. (Okay, the fact that those secrets make him a little bit dark and brooding was also hot.)
The best thing about this book, something I see a lot in Dahl's work, is that the characters grow, and they do it because of each other. That makes for great romance. Watching Tessa learn from her bad choices, neither quickly nor easily, was terrific. I have known people who lie to protect themselves and others, who do stupid things to try and preserve family harmony, and who have a very hard time trusting other people to handle the truth and stick out the tough times. Those are behavior patterns that aren't easily broken, so it rang absolutely true to me that Tessa kept digging herself in deeper rather than reforming too quickly.
The sibling dynamic in this book is fun, which set up the rest of the trilogy in a way that didn't feel forced or artificial. There is a nice overall plot-and-character arc within the family that works out over all three books, and it's the kind of complex family drama that shouldn't be too easy to fix. I really liked how this first book got so far and no further in that respect; it's more believable to me that established family dysfunction doesn't get fixed by the introduction of one wise outsider and a couple of honest conversations.
My reaction makes the book sound heavy, and there are definitely some big emotions at work here, but there are also moments in the book that are laugh-out-loud funny. Dahl has a real knack for situational humor, especially where sex is involved, and she makes effective use of the comic potential generated by a sexually active woman with two over-protective and somewhat clueless older brothers. That made this a well-rounded and enjoyable read for me.

Good Girls Don't (Donovan Family) Overview

Too much of a good thing...With her long ponytail and sparkling green eyes, Tessa Donovan looks more like the girl next door than a businesswoman—or a heartbreaker. Which may explain why Detective Luke Asher barely notices her when he arrives to investigate a break–in at her family's brewery. He's got his own problems—starting with the fact that his partner, Simone, is pregnant and everyone thinks he's the father.Tessa has her hands full, too. Her brother's playboy ways may be threatening the business, and the tension could tear her tight–knit family apart. In fact, the only thing that could unite the Donovan boys is seeing a man come after their "baby" sister. Especially a man like Luke Asher. But Tessa sees past the rumors to the man beneath. He's not who people think he is—and neither is she.

Escape from the World Trade Center (Ebook Short) Review

This is a quick read which is not easy to put down, but I found myself reading slowly in order to absorb its enormity.
It is at once a look at: the tragedy of 9/11, the workings of the human mind/spirit as it experiences this level of trauma, the sudden realization/affirmation of what is really important in life, the role of religious belief in the life of one who had firm religious belief before living through these events.... all in an amazingly short span of writing.
The gravity of the story is retold through beautiful writing. Putting this into the written word to be read by others is gutsy, and should be respected. I found myself nodding at her recognition that the firefighters probably knew they weren't coming back.... I always believed that. They appeared to have made a choice. This was not simply a matter of "doing their job". You could see it in the eyes of the fireman whose haunting photo came from those stairs after the tragedy.
One note: The book is full of bible references, and other religious notations. Although I share neither her specific religion nor her solid religious orientation, in this case, the references did not bother me, nor did I find them intrusive in her telling of her story.
Thank you to the author for her sharing as we approach the tenth anniversary.

Forevermore Review

Like a breath of fresh air, Hope Ladley drifts in from one farm to the next landing wherever the good Lord leads her to offer help around harvest time. Arriving at the farm of widower Jakob Stauffer she finds him still grieving for his departed wife. Jakob hasn't relaxed in some time while trying to hold things together for his young daughter Emmy Lou and shield his heavily pregnant sister Annie from a violent husband. Hope's upbeat personality and loving quirky ways quickly win over Annie and Emmy Lou, but it's going to take much more to break through the hard overprotective shell Jakob has developed to trust anyone with his heart let alone what's left of his family.
*** Just as mentioned above, Ms. Hake's latest story depicting the cliché mangling, illiterate, itinerant wanderer Hope Ladley is indeed a breath of fresh air. What Hope lacks in book learning (due to dyslexia) she overflows with trust in the Lord, love, and human understanding. What a marvelous creation of a character this author has brought forth for all to admire and enjoy!
Likewise, Jakob was fashioned with a deep sense of honor and unfathomable pain after the loss of his wife and child, and not having been able to protect his sister from being beaten and abused by her lowlife of a husband. His trust did not come easy with constant worry over his daughter Emmy Lou coming to harm, or his sister's abusive husband discovering her condition. Hope was a complete puzzle to him, especially her odd way of getting things done while severely mangling well-known bible verses and clichés - which - when she explained her version, began to make sense.
Hake did a brilliant job of letting Jakob see the reasoning behind Hope's seemingly hap-hazard way of getting things done. As more heart-wrenching events unfolded, it would be through Hope's understanding and ingenuity that Jakob would be able to weather the obstacles tossed his way. His "pact" with Hope was drawing closer to the day she would again `mosey on down the road' to the next place the Lord led her to, but Jakob knew he had to somehow convince her to stay with him forevermore.
By re-introducing neighbors of the Stauffer's from previous book, FANCY PANTS, Hake rounds out Hope and Jakob's story with a plethora of even more realistic and likeable characters. Definitely a stand-alone, FOREVERMORE is a wonderful depiction of earlier times when neighbors helped neighbors and every one pitched in with many hands easing the load. Bible verses were judiciously used at perfect moments within the story giving the reader even more to absorb, especially when mixed up and interpreted Hope's way. The reader will find plenty of light heartedness as well as some very tense moments as Annie's abusive husband resurfaced, as well as an emotional health related issue concerning young Emmy Lou.
Hake is superb at writing compelling and thoroughly enjoyable stories. Bottom line, FOREVERMORE is a fabulous uplifting read that fans of inspirational historical stories are sure to embrace. Highly recommended reading....... Marilyn Rondeau

Forevermore Overview

His little daughter and the pregnant sister he's shielding from an abusive husband adore Hope, and things are getting accomplished even if Hope's methods are unique. With Jakob's future uncertain and his heart tangled, can the farmer convince Hope to take root and remain as his wife?

Here Be Monsters... 50 Days Adrift At Sea (Kindle Single) Review

I really enjoy reading about extraordinary tales of survival. This is my first Kindle single, and I loved it. The idea of the single is great, and fits this story perfect. I guarantee you'll read this in on sitting, and it'll make you think different before your next boating/camping/any sort of trip!
Nearly as interesting as the main story is learning about life in Atafu (a small island of 500 people), a place I never even knew existed. I really recommend this single, definitely worth your $2.

Here Be Monsters... 50 Days Adrift At Sea (Kindle Single) Overview

They did it for the simplest of reasons: adventure. Three young friends, on a drunken dare, set out on a dinghy for a nearby island. But when the gas ran out and they drifted into barren waters, their biggest threat wasn't the ocean -- it was each other.

Face the Winter Naked Review

Face The Winter Naked is a poignant tale of a family's plight during the Great Depression. Plagued by traumatic memories of the First World War, Daniel abandons his family, leaving his wife LaDaisy to fend for herself and the children. The narrative alternates between Daniel's life as a hobo seeking work and LaDaisy's struggle to keep her family alive while fighting off the advances of a man with the power to leave her and her children homeless. Turner's engaging writing tells their stories with compassion and insight and vividly brings to life the feel of the era. If you liked Water for Elephants, this is one for you.

Face the Winter Naked Overview

Daniel Tomelin, a battle-worn veteran haunted by the carnage of the First World War, deserts his family in the Great Depression and goes on the road to seek relief from his soul-shaking trauma. He's too proud to return and face his loving wife without a job, but LaDaisy is determined to care for their family alone, if that's what it takes. After leaving his loved ones to cope with a hell he helped create, does Daniel dare show his face again? Sometimes LaDaisy feels like killing him.FACE THE WINTER NAKED is a story for today's struggling economy and unemployed citizens, set in a tragic era when hope was sometimes all they had.Bonnie Turner's Face the Winter Naked is set during the Great Depression, but her story encompasses issues that reach far beyond that era and know no time constraints"war. Political strife. Economic collapse. Environmental catastrophe. Division of families. Cruelty and oppression. Poverty, inequity, and all the faces of prejudice. But it is also about love. And faith. And strength. And hope, forgiveness, and perseverance. Face the Winter Naked provides an engrossing read in which Turner interweaves history, geography, and a compelling love story. More than that, it is a story that looks beyond the surface, delving into the inner workings of the human mind"a powerful narrative that illuminates larger issues of humanity that are timeless and volatile and just as apropos today as decades ago. “~ Karen Donley-Hayes, M.A.I.S., author and editor____"FACE THE WINTER NAKED is a gorgeously written and evocative novel of an earlier economic crisis: the Great Depression. Readers looking for a stunning read, intelligent and emotional on every level, will not be disappointed."~ Lauren Baratz-Logsted, author of Crazy Beautiful and The Education of Bet

Shipwrecked (Kindle Single) Review

I was familiar with the story because I was told it in person around the campfire years ago. It was a great feat of strength and survival with a bit of humour thrown in.
To read Mishka's story not only put it in colour but in High Definition.
I downloaded it at work just before lunch hour and even though people were waiting on me for lunch break, I had to keep reading and couldn't wait to get back to the story.
One thing that I don't care for is when writers write for the sake of writing. I like a good story told by a great story teller. If the author can write a great story without pissing around all day, then I can stick around to the end. I think that Mishka took a great story, a true story, and added the colour and surround sound to turn it into a great 3D experience for the reader.
Good job, I want to say now go out and produce more of these great stories but I am afraid that you may not always survive the research part.

In the Year of the Shark, a chance encounter between a ne'er-do-well writer and a tropical storm left him marooned on the deserted end of a Caribbean island and charged with the rescue of his four shipmates. There, Mishka Shubaly learned some valuable life lessons - among them that in the absence of whiskey, wine and water, urine will get the job done.

Clear Blue Sky Review

I've said before that reading an F.P. Lione novel is like watching an un-cut taping of COPS, only you follow the cops home. But in a way that's doing their writing a disservice. A Lione novel is about much more than the domestic disputes, car chases, and gun wielding criminals often found on the tv show. That isn't to say these types of situations don't make it into the pages. They do. But a Lione novel digs deeper than that. By following police officer Tony Cavalucci on and off duty, the Lione's reveal the heart and soul of a cop. Tony's story has already filled three Midtown Blue novels (The Deuce, The Crossroads & Skells), and his saga continues in Clear Blue Sky, the unofficial 4th book.
This time around Tony's closer to marrying his fiance Michelle, and his Italian family continues to voice their objections to the union. Michelle isn't Italian or Catholic, two strikes against her. She had her young son Stevie out of wedlock and there's no sign of the father. Strike three. With the Cavalucci family you're guilty until proven innocent, and even then if you get on their bad side they'll find some way to convict you. Their crazy yet realistic dynamics provide just as much drama as the worst nights on Tony's midnight tour, and it's starting to wear on him. He finds himself torn between loyalty to his blood-family and the family he's come to love as his own. He doesn't want to lose either of them, but sooner or later he's going to have to make a choice.
Not to mention that he and God haven't been on the best of terms lately. Since Tony became a Christian his life has actually gotten harder. Not only does he have to face the temptation to hit the bottle again, but he's facing moral choices right and left. Case in point: he promised to throw his brother Vinny a bachelor party. Vinny wants it wild, like old times. Tony struggles with letting his brother down and standing behind his new-found principles, and Michelle. If it weren't for his Christian partner, Officer Joe Fiore, Tony would probably slip back into his old ways as easily as he slips on his gun belt.
It's an incredibly realistic portrayal of one man's struggle to live out his faith. Being a cop and a Christian are hard enough. Being an Italian cop with a dysfunctional family is harder. How can Tony keep the faith without losing his family?
Like the books before it, Clear Blue Sky is not a novel with a clear plot. But it will keep you riveted. There's something extremely compelling in the Lione's style. Their details are vivid and specific, adding to the authenticity. Like the others in the Midtown Blue series as you read Clear Blue Sky you really do feel like you're tagging along in the back seat of Tony's patrol car as he faces the sad, the serious, and the outrageous on his beat. You'll walk away from the novel with a new appreciation for police officers.
This novel is being marketed as a stand-alone about the 9/11 tragedy, which could be slightly misleading. The actual disaster doesn't occur until well into the story. I had expected to read more about Tony and Joe's experiences on that day. But holding off until the end was a natural and effective way to build tension. You know the Twin Towers are coming down, and you look for it on every page. Brings home the point that September 11th was a normal autumn day like any other.
If you've ever wondered what it's like to be a cop in one of the world's busiest cities, look no further. Pick up any Lione novel and feast on the experience. Clear Blue Sky is no exception. But in this one you'll come away with new insights on what really happened in New York City that fateful September day in 2001--the day the sky was clear and blue.
--Reviewed by C.J. Darlington for TitleTrakk

Clear Blue Sky Overview

It's the beginning of a gorgeous September in the City that Never Sleeps. Summer may be officially over, but Labor Day Weekend means ethnic festivals and dancing the streets and lots of overtime for police officer Tony Cavalucci. When crowd control gets unusually dangerous, Tony starts to wonder why he even does this kind of work. And going home doesn't bring him any more respect. His neurotic and dramatic family disapproves of both Tony's fiancé and his new-found faith. All this foreshadows what's about to come to the people of New York on September 11, 2001. Normal day-to-day events and fantastic weather lead up to the most difficult day in the city's history. Now Tony finds himself in brand new territory. As he fights to survive and help others survive as well, Tony learns all over what faith means, what family means, and what life itself means. The author of this highly compelling novel is an ex-cop who survived the World Trade Center rescue efforts. Consequently, the storytelling throughout the book rings with authenticity. All of this makes for a fast-paced and deeply moving page-turner that is at times funny, at times horrible, and always full of humanity, compassion, and the presence of God. The Liones offer their very best work in Clear Blue Sky.

Life Support (Santee, Book 1) Review

The marketers try to convince us that every writer of legal thrillers is "the next John Grisham." Within the Christian market, the twist goes like this: "he's the Christian John Grisham." (As if Grisham's books aren't often Christian in content!)
Well, I'm here to say that two writers live up to the pretentious billing. Randy Singer, who recently won a Christy Award for "Directed Verdict," is one of them. Robert Whitlow, also a Christy Award winner, is the other. Both authors tell gripping tales with Christian themes and believable characters. Both are capable of matching the best legal thrillers out there.
In "Life Support," Robert Whitlow tells a story both simple and serpentine, both vicious and full of grace. I picked up the book and found myself hooked by the attempted murder at the beginning (which the back cover should not have given away...shame, shame!). The guilty wife is soon trapped by circumstances and connives to protect herself, dragging an unwitting and honorable attorney, Alexia Lindale, into her scheme. Lindale is a likeable character, and I enjoyed following her spiritual, romantic, and legal journey. Within three sittings, I had devoured the novel. Although Whitlow steps away from the story once or twice to deliver mini-sermons, he always speaks truth. And, in the book's conclusion, he was careful to play his hand lightly, thus adding to the impact.
I highly recommend this book, and believe it is Whitlow's finest to date. With these authors presenting such compelling evidence, who can honestly discount the legal thriller's ability to make a strong case for God's working in everyday humanity?
I rest my case.

Life Support (Santee, Book 1) Overview

Alexia Lindale knows her new case is a matter of life and death. She doesn't have a clue what it will do to her heart...and soul.

From the Christy-award-winning author of The List, The Trial, and The Sacrifice comes this twisting tale of tough decisions, mixed motives, and mysterious, healing grace.

Baxter Richardson survived a fall from a cliff while hiding in the mountains. Whether he'll make it through the next few weeks is unclear. His survival depends on the machines that help him breathe. On the haunted, unstable wife who wants to pull the plug and hide her secrets. On the doting father who wants him alive for reasons of love and money. On the conflicting legal documents that send the fight to court. And, on the music and prayers of an extraordinarily gifted pianist.

Blackbird Fly Review

Harry Strachie dies of a heart attack in the first pages. This starts a whole bunch of mysteries, lies, deceits, and intrigue. His wife and son are left without much but a key, a photo, and a deed to a house in France. Merle, his wife, and Tristan, his son, travel to France to see about selling the house. There is a squatter in the house, the people in the village don't like the Americans, some even seem to hate them. This is a fast moving story, with trips back in time to when Harry's parents lived in the house, and what happens then effects what is happening now. It is very well done, very well written, and the characters are very interesting, likeable, and you really care about them. There are dead bodies, lots of suspense and mystery, great characters, a bit of romance, but mostly it's just a great story! This is one of the best books I've read this year. You won't disappointed. I highly recommend it.

Blackbird Fly Overview

A house in France connects three women together -- the woman who owns the house, the woman who lives in the house, and the woman who died in the house sixty years before. Who are they? Merle Bennett inherits the house of her late husband, in a small village in the Dordogne. But when she arrives a deranged squatter won't let her inside. Who is the woman? What is her connection to Merle's husband? Secrets from the post-war period, when southwest France was crushed and left to wither by Nazi occupation, and secrets of a newer kind, occupy what should be a fine French summer for Merle. With her teenage son in tow, a sexy roofer in her kitchen, and a nasty discovery in the pissoir, there is plenty to keep her mind off her endless to-do list. A story of murder, self-discovery, and family, deep in the heart of France. "A heartbreakingly beautiful story of love, loss, sisterhood, and the ties that bind us together," says novelist Jenny Siler.-----The sudden death of her husband turns Merle Bennett's life upside down. Her work for poor legal clients isn't going to pay the bills and her son is kicked out of school. The blows just keep on coming. Merle finds herself doing what she least expected, decamping to France for the summer to fix up her late husband's ancestral home. The village in southwest France should be idyllic: warm sunshine, vineyards, and walls of golden stone. Merle gets an off-the-books job as a tour guide at a local winery and evicts a squatter. But the townspeople are more than merely unfriendly. As the past unravels, colliding with modern tensions and the filthy trials of renovation, the summer takes on a dark cast, full of secrets best left buried. In her first stand-alone suspense novel, Lise McClendon reaches deep into the past to find a France untouched by the outside world of tourism and fashion. Writing in a "lyrical, often humorous style," she brings both the pain and rewards of rebirth and the rich French countryside to life.

A Thousand Tomorrows & Just Beyond The Clouds Omnibus Review

I've never read a Karen Kingsbury book that I didn't like. The heart she puts in the development of her characters has always touched me and I don't believe I've ever read one of her books without shedding some tears. "A Thousand Tomorrows" certainly was no different. However what I did notice was different about this novel was the abscence of reference to scripture. In previous books scripture tended to be threaded througout the entire book. This just wasn't the case in this novel. Again, I certainly still enjoyed the book a great deal and read it in one sitting because as usual, Karen's characters drew me in and gripped my heart. There just seem to be a change in this book from her previous books. With that said, I learned that Karen's books don't have to meantion specific scripture to teach us all lessons about the love of God. Incredible author.
