The Runaway Pastor's Wife Review

One rainy day my mom came home from running some errands and laid this book down on the table. I had nothing else to do so I picked it up, made some tea, and plopped down on the couch. I was sucked in at the first page. Amazingly written and fast-paced, the McGregors kept me reading at every chance I got. Ask anyone. It takes a GOOD book to keep me reading. Diane Moody did an excellent job crafting together this book. I found myself thinking about my relationship with God and how much time I spent actually listening. All-in-all I'm glad I picked up this book. It was well worth it.

The Runaway Pastor's Wife Overview

What could possibly drive a pastor's wife to run away from home? After years of frustration from life in a church fishbowl, Annie McGregor walks away from it all and boards a plane for Colorado. She has no way of knowing her college sweetheart is headed to the same cabin in the Rockies, terrified and gravely wounded. Their unexpected reunion couldn't have come at a worse time. Or could it? Bewildered that God would allow Michael Dean to walk back into her life, Annie pleads with Him to keep her heart true to her husband and her family. God answers her prayer, but in a way she would never expect. Written by a former pastor's wife, Annie's story provides a rare look inside the family life of those in the ministry, particularly the unique pressures on those who marry men of God.

Reason to Breathe Review

This book really surprised me as I was expecting a quick story about young love. The writing was superb and the character building was so artfully achieved that I was almost shocked at how much I felt for the main character and her friends. I am not someone who typically cries while reading a sad story or even laughs out loud, but I found myself actually sobbing at some points and grinning from ear to ear at others. It was almost an educational experience for me as well regarding domestic abuse from a child's point of view. Other books I've read with a domestic violence theme gloss over details and give an adult female's viewpoint, so although this story was even more heartbreaking it was also very eye opening.
I won't spoil this gripping story for you but I have to ask why we are allowed to invest so much in this character only to be robbed of any closure? There was a definite 'you decide the ending' vibe from the Epilogue which frustrated me immensely, but her web site[....] reveals that a sequel is in the works.
**My advice is to read this book at home and not at the doctor's office. It is very emotional and if you are like me, you don't want to start bawling your eyes out in the waiting room.

The Lying Game Review

In the Lying game Emma finds herself stepping into the life of Sutton, her long lost (and dead) twin sister after seeing a video of a snuff film starring Sutton placed on the internet. The novel is narrated by the dead Sutton (who doesn't remember much of her life) who watches as Emma tries to find out who killed her. The matter is complicated by The Lying Game which is popular with Sutton and her friends which involves cruel pranks that often include making the victim feel as though she is the victim of a crime.
The Lying Game is by the author of Pretty Little Liars which is one of the novels that has been packaged by HarperTeen for multiple media distribution. The book reads like a TV show (and the TV show is already in pre-production) and is a very entertaining and fast read. The mystery is intriguing but does not resolve at the end of the book (all of the characters are still suspects) there is a bit of resolution regarding a clue but the reader is still left a bit unsatisfied with the ending. The back cover (of my ARC) presents the novel as part Pretty Little Liars and part Lovely bones and honestly that's giving far more credit than the novel should get. The book is fun and trashy but can't be compared with a novel like The Lovely Bones (although if you can use this to convince your child that she should read The Lovely Bones then go for it).
Appropriateness: This is one of those books that will give conservative parents lots of worry. There is plenty of sex talk (although no actual sex), lots of drinking (complete with drinking games), criminal activity, mean girl bullying and even a bit of drug use. As is common with this genre book there is also an obsessive amount of "label dropping" as the author describes all the clothing with super-high end labels (even Emma as a foster child is obsessed with designer clothes). However, the characters in the book in no way appear normal (they're super rich) and Emma quite frequently looks down on their bad behavior. I wouldn't give the book to a high reading elementary schooler but if your middle grade reader wants to read the book it would be good to use it as an opening to have discussions of how to deal with situations (such as being at a party where everyone is participating in a drinking game) that they may find themselves in when they're older.

Catching Fire (The Second Book of the Hunger Games) Review

If you thought the Capitol couldn't get any more twisted... you were wrong.
The highly-anticipated sequel to The Hunger Games is the kind of novel that has you pulling back to take a breath and go, "How did the author think of this?" (if you can stop turning the pages long enough to breathe)
Catching Fire picks up right where Hunger Games left off. Unrest in the Districts is growing at an alarming pace and Katniss unwittingly finds herself the figurehead for the movement against the Capitol. The characters you loved return for the sequel and the reader must endure each indignity the Capitol inflicts upon them. It is painful, tortuous, imaginative and motivating. It is everything The Hunger Games was and more. It both answers your lingering questions and creates so many new ones. It challenges you to think and creates such feelings of empathy for the characters that whenever I had to put the book down, I was genuinely worried for leaving the characters hanging and couldn't wait to pick it back up just so they could continue fighting for their lives and freedoms.
Everything I loved about The Hunger Games is present in Catching Fire: the unique and engrossing storyline; characters so thoroughly and beautifully described they start to feel like friends; a fantastical setting that is both real and sad; and language that is easy to read and yet conveys such a profound meaning. It has action, romance, horror, hope, despair and, most of all, humanity. It has sci-fi and politics yet, unlike a lot of books on the market, they are not "in your face" and are completely approachable.
Due to elements of violence and some light romantic scenes, I would recommend it for 13+. That being said, I would recommend it for ANYONE 13+ of any reading taste or background: as a bookseller and a recent library school graduate, these are the books I find easiest to recommend to anyone I meet.
I am on the edge of my seat waiting for the third and final book to come out. After reading Catching Fire, I know you will be too.

A Single Deadly Truth (A Steve Decatur Thriller) Review

I couldn't put it down. It moves very quickly. As an ex-Navy person I devoured the depictions on the water. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes suspence. Urban takes us on a hunt for sunken treasure and leaves us satisfied.

A Single Deadly Truth (A Steve Decatur Thriller) Overview

A Single Deadly Truth -- an exciting new read for the summer of 2011. * * * * *"Single Deadly is a fast read that blends sunken treasure, deep-sea diving, fast boats and a cast of characters that run from bad guys to real bad guys to really really bad guys. (And that doesn't even count the shark.)" Author Frank Cook.Urban sets the story on the waters of Cape Cod and Buzzards Bay and gives the reader a rewarding blend of adventure, seaside escapism, and maritime history. Call Me Joe Review

Poul Anderson was one of the greats of the golden age of Science Fiction. "Call Me Joe" is a short story published in the late 1950's in one of the popular science fiction magazines of the time, where I first read it (I think it was Astounding, but I'm not sure). The basic premise is a scientific mission to Jupiter creates a life form that can survive on the Jovian "surface", remote controlled from a moon station. The controlling scientist is a handicapped man who feels the power of the whole, vibrant creature that he controls. Is this beginning to sound familiar? Did James Cameron read this story and let it percolate for 60 years?
As always, Poul Anderson's prose is a joy to read, and the ending, while not a complete surprise, is very satisfying. Read it to see where "Avatar" came from. And for the pleasure of tasting the Master's work.

Call Me Joe Overview

A classic Campbell-edited novelette from the Fifties, with the original cover and all four interior drawings by Kelly Freas. “Call Me Joe" is Poul Anderson at his best, with the planetary science working neatly in the background to support a gripping human story.

Chosen Review

This book does have a sincere story to save children but the main line is into the minds of those who do evil through psychic detective work at a level of Belief. That is how I summarize the entire book. Totally fiction but not a phony, the writing is excellent and real as it can get in doubtful territory. I am impressed and did enjoy reading from beginning to end, starts off rather rigorous, tapers then explodes when discovering the Predator who knows how to thwart the psych with his own power. The predator is revealed and explored mentally and is quite interesting as well as page turning.
All the characters are very well intro'd in this book, and well understood, the books strong point. What was so good is that nothing is predictable , surprises wildly yet maintains that realism. I got right into it from page one and I personally need that in any book to continue and that's why I am reviewing this one, it is a taker from the start.
The story in general is solid and never shallow or disappointing.
This is also an intelligent, realistic read that I am satisfied with in the sense I got something out if it, something real about a problem we truly do have in our society of predators. I also want to recommend a very similar and rewarding book by Cota, Predator Down, a real story where they chase this guy back and forth from Mexico with a horrific but educating theme. Predator Down

Vampire Moon (Vampire for Hire #2) Review

Great next installment in the Vampire for Hire series. The author keeps developing the storyline around Sam's family, as well as with her friends (werewolf, fang, etc). Although this book seemed short, and left me wanting to see where Sam goes with Werewolf Boy...it was well written, and I'm definitely pre-ordering the next one!
I am definitely frustrated with the ending!! I don't think I can wait until next April to find out Fang's identity....I've got a few guesses though...

Vampire Moon (Vampire for Hire #2) Overview

Mother, wife, private investigator...vampire. Six years ago federal agent Samantha Moon was the perfect wife and mother, your typical soccer mom with the minivan and suburban home. Then the unthinkable happens, an attack that changes her life forever. And forever is a very long time for a vampire. Now in VAMPIRE MOON, sequel to MOON DANCE, private investigator Samantha Moon finds herself hunting down a powerful crime lord and protecting an innocent woman from her ruthless ex-husband - all while two very different men vie for her heart. And as the stakes grow higher and her cases turn personal, Samantha Moon will do whatever it takes to protect the innocent and bring two cold-blooded killers to justice - her own brand of justice.**Acclaim for the Novels of J.R. Rain**"Gripping, adventurous, and romantic - J.R. Rain's The Lost Ark is a breakneck thriller that traces the thread of history from Biblical stories to current-day headlines. Be prepared to lose sleep!"-JAMES ROLLINS, international bestselling author of Altar of Eden and The Doomsday Key"I enjoyed this immensely. The protagonist, Samantha Moon, is a female vampire with a husband and children. Those predate her condition; six years ago she was attacked by a vampire and rendered into one. Now she's trying to carry on with family and private eye business, and she's a feisty, skilled person, so is doing mostly okay. It is not a horror story; she buys animal blood to eat and doesn't generally prey on humans. But her husband has an increasing problem with her coldness - not of spirit, but of body. 'You sicken me and scare the hell out of me,' he tells her. 'And when I touch you it's all I can do to not gag.' She replies, 'Words every wife wants to hear.' I love this! What makes it special are her character and nature."-PIERS ANTHONY, New York Times bestselling author of A Spell for Chameleon and On A Pale Horse"Dark Horse is one of the best books I've read in a long time! A great classic detective story with a modern twist. Unique and interesting characters (I think I'm half in love with Jim Knighthorse now!), a great plot that kept me guessing until the end, and some of the funniest lines I've read anywhere."-GEMMA HALLIDAY, author of Deadly Cool and Play Dead"Impossible to put down. Shattered Dreams Review

I am a little torn with this review - between 3 ½ and 4 stars.
Lady Elyssa Prescott has a limp from a childhood accident and is painfully aware of her `imperfection' thanks to the reaction of `society'. Her siblings are fiercely protective of her and want her to be happy. Her sisters create a correspondence romance, realise it is a mistake and then Elyssa's brother Harrison decides to distract her by inviting someone to charm her for a 2-week party at their country estate.
He calls upon an old school friend with a reputation for the ladies, Brentan Montgomery, Earl of Charfield and offers him a foal from one of his Arabian horses for simply escorting his sister socially - warning him to keep proper distance.
Before the ploy can even begin Brent meets Elyssa out riding and is enthralled by her. She is an outstanding rider and shares his love of horses. His attraction is genuine and he truly sees her wonderful qualities. For the first time in her life, she is made to feel desired and attractive. However, the agreement with her brother hangs in the air above them like a hatchet waiting to fall.
Alongside the development of their story, there is a parallel story of Harrison and Lady Cassandra. They meet again after 4 years, following a terrible scandal and betrayal, only to realise that they were unwilling pawns in a game and so much time has been lost. Real danger now puts all of their lives at stake.
I liked the story and very much liked the 2 main characters, but the secondary plot could have been a story in its own right.
Overall a good read, but not quite up there for a 5 star rating.

Shattered Dreams Overview

Brentan Montgomery, Earl of Charfield has one love - his stable of Arabian horses. When he is offered breeding rights to the Marquess of Fellingsdown's prize Arabian, El Solidar, if for two weeks he acts as companion to Fellingsdown's sister, he doesn't care if the reclusive Lady Elyssa has three chins and a dozen hairy moles, the prize at the end is worth anything he has to endure. But when he meets the elusive Lady Elyssa Prescott, all thoughts of gaining a prize Arabian colt disappear. He realizes he's met the woman of his dreams - if only he can keep her from discovering the deceit that brought them together and convince her that her imperfections don't matter to him. Lady Elyssa Prescott knows what it's like to be ridiculed and shunned. But when Brent Montgomery lets her glimpse a world where her limitations aren't important, she believes it's possible for her dreams to become a reality. Until she discovers the man with whom she's fallen in love was ‘hired' to offer her everything she's always dreamed of having. The cruel reality of a love built on deceit shatters both their dreams and threatens to destroy their lives forever.

Snapped Review

I first met Jonah and Sophie in Unforgivable and there was some definite sparks there so I couldn't wait to read their story. I was also very intrigued by the school shooting premise. The whole time I was reading, I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next--I wasn't sure where the author will take the story especially after the shooter shot himself in chapter three. But take it she did and after the highly charged beginning, I was at the edge of my seat the whole entire time.
The characters (main and secondary) were fantastic. But the character that stood out for me was Sophie who was very smart, stubborn and independent. Usually, stubborn and independent heroines tend to irritate me because most knowingly put themselves into stupid situations. Not Sophie. Danger seemed to find her. This girl went through a lot--from being being abducted in Unforgivable to being caught in the middle of a school shooting to realizing that someone was trying to kill her (after she was ran off a cliff and narrowly escaping her car in which the villain had planted a bomb). I knew and understood where she was coming from and why she did what she did. Jonah was great as well and he had his own issues, mainly fighting his intense attraction to Sophie who was convinced that the shooter may have an accomplice. He knew what Sophie had gone through and he didn't want to take advantage of her. She was also a key witness in his case. There is a reason why Ms. Griffin is my go-to author for romantic suspense and it's because she can write a darn good romance amid all the action and suspense--she balances the suspense and the romance so well. There was great chemistry between Sophie and Jonah. They were both fighting their feelings for each other for most of the book but when they finally got together, it's genuine and worth the anticipation on my part.
I guess my only complaint was that I felt I didn't get to "know" the villain. I felt he wasn't as sinister as I like my villains to be and he wasn't as well-developed as the shooter. Characters from previous Tracer series books make an appearance (like Ric and Mia from Unforgivable) which I like because you get an update on what they have been doing. New characters were also introduced like workaholic, rookie detective Allison Doyle and I hope she'll have her own book in the future.
Ms. Griffin takes you on a ride filled with twists and turns that will have you guessing until the end. Snapped is a gripping, action-packed, suspenseful and romantic read you won't be able to put down.
4.5 out of 5 stars
**Reviewed by Michelle for Michelle & Leslie's Book Picks blog review.**

Snapped Overview

SOPHIE BARRETT THINKS SHE'S LUCKY TO BE ALIVE. SHE MAY BE DEAD WRONG. On a sweltering summer afternoon, Sophie Barrett walks into a nightmare. A sniper has opened fire on a college campus. When the carnage is over, three people-plus the shooter-are dead and dozens more are injured. Sophie escapes virtually unscathed. Yet as details emerge from the investigation, she becomes convinced that this wasn't the random, senseless act it appeared to be. No one wants to believe her-not the cops, not her colleagues at the Delphi Center crime lab, and definitely not Jonah Macon, the homicide detective who's already saved her life once. Jonah has all kinds of reasons for hoping Sophie is mistaken. Involving himself with a key witness could derail an already messy investigation, not to mention jeopardize his career. But Sophie is as determined and fearless as she is sexy. If he can't resist her, he can at least swear to protect her. Because if Sophie is right, she's made herself the target of a killer without a conscience. And the real terror is only just beginning. . . .

Ashley is a successful artist-photographer, living her life with no added complications until one morning her male model turns up at her door and she asks him to strip to his briefs, ready for a session, when he informs her that he is not who she thinks she is. He is indeed the son of the man who died saving her from the fire in Calyle house 10 years prior.Ron Noble. Ron believes the fire may have been deliberately lit; Ashley just wants to move on, she has accepted what has happened.
Did someone kill Ashley's parents? Was the fire set deliberately?
Ron wants to expose the truth, and he needs Ashley on his side, to do so.
Ron Noble wants to find out what happened that dreaded night. Ashley understands his pain they both lost loved ones, feeling drawn to Ron not only for his charming ways, but feels maybe it is time to find out the truth... Ashley agrees to help Ron, the electricity between them is sizzling, they both feel it, but as secrets are unraveled, mysteries divulged, they find themselves in a whirlwind of turns and twists they could never have imagined. People on the list are getting killed, the toll is getting higher and more is at stake that then could ever have imagined. It's left up to Ashley to remember details of the accident something that will change her life forever.
Wow!!!!
I must say this romantic thriller, was filled with twists and turns at every corner. I was intrigued from beginning to end with this read, and at one stage I felt like a crazed reader, flickering through 100 miles per hour just to find out whom, what, where and why!!!
A suspenseful thriller- romance that will leave you bewildered, guessing and wandering who the killer was, and why. An unpredictable plot by any means, suspense that will leave you gasping, unexpected events that will bring tears to your eyes; make you fume at events that take place, and also making the plot both intriguing and memorable. Chapters flowed smoothly, the plot was fast paced, and kept the reader interested throughout from beginning to end. I felt not a thing was missed or rushed...
Slow burn was filled with luscious sensual love scenes, that not only with have your toes curling, eyelashes fluttering, but your heart racing like a bird in flight. Moments where you will find yourself grinning with amusement at the funny antics between the characters, and moments where your heart is being played like a marionette and scenes where you want to just jump into the book.
The main characters were well developed, Ron - was charming and flirtatious, a successul business man, rich, cocky, and hot to trot, yet also has his own vunerabilites, this showed the reader he was not that perfect hot firefighter- playboy and that he also had issues he had to deal with. Loving and caring and sexy an idealistic hero for all. A tortured soul to a certain extent.
Ashley was hot headed in what she believed in and independent, caring and considerate, but also I enjoyed her straight forward character, she liked the truth and believed to give it at all costs. She was passionate about her work and the ones she loved, determined to do what it took to keep the ones she loved out of danger. Not a character I would consider stuck up or snotty but down to earth and very realistic.
The blazing attraction between Ron and Ashley was mesmerizing, tantalizing and passionate. Sex scenes were sensual and loving, electrifying- if you make call it, yet at times also dreamy and transient. Their love was portrayed, tastefully and emotionally giving a good insight to their feelings. Both the good and the bad moments. The descriptions in this story were Fluent, expressive and rhythmic well above defined, there is nothing quite like reading a book and being able to envisage scenery, scents and smells. I am one for great descriptions and this book does not disappoint.
Secondary characters all blended in well, nothing missed out and even the villains were portrayed as noxious, and demented. Definitely incalculable. Making you dislike the character. Ednah defined this well. The other characters, loyal and faithful, and heartfelt. I enjoyed all the characters in Slow Burn, each and every one unique and necessary for the plot to unwind.
Overall, I must say, I had Goosebumps by the end, Held my breath and hoped for the best .... I am a dramatic reader, but you know when you have read a good book when it pulls at your emotions and when the end is done ... you sigh! And breathe... I'm sure I held my breath last few chapters.
A capricious read !!!! I'm sure you will enjoy.
Look forward to reading more of the Fitzgerald series.

The Shack Review

I read The Shack as a book discussion group assignment (said group consisting of theologically conservative pastors), and I can understand why the book is upsetting to many--whether because of the subject matter (the murder of a child) or because of some of the book's theological implications.
However, I think many are missing the point that the book is a parable, not a doctrinal treatise. I found reading the book to be an incredibly moving experience, and have (cautiously) recommended it to those in my circle of acquaintance whom I think would be able to digest its message.
I do find it interesting that so many evangelical Christians have had such a negative visceral reaction to this novel. This is especially remarkable in light of the fact that, by and large, evangelical Christianity has embraced C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia--this despite the fact that Lewis wove animism, Greek philosophy, and Roman mythology into his parabolic communication of Christian truth. Not to put too fine a point on it, but is it any more offensive to present God in the form of an African-American woman who cooks scones, than it is to present God's Son as an animal which imparts blessing to children by licking them in the face? (Incidentally, I thoroughly enjoyed the Narnian Chronicles as well.)
My recommendation: If you want theology, read the works of theologians. (Watch out for Sproul and other 5-pointers, though.) If you want an emotionally moving parable which hammers home the importance of a personal relationship with God, then buy and read--and be touched by--The Shack.

The Shack Overview

Mackenzie Allen Phillips's youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation, and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later, in this midst of his great sadness, Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him back to that shack for a weekend. Against his better judgment he arrives at the shack on wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare. What he finds there will change his life forever.

Not Telling Review

I heartily enjoyed this latest book from Cindy Vine. I always like to read Cindy's books. Last time I read The Case of Billy B and I couldn't put it down. Overall the novel Not Telling is very good and easy to read. The story is quite emotional and will have you gripping the edge of your seat. You'll want to read on to find out if Jenny tells her sister or not. I have no words to explain how thought-provoking the story is. I think the reader must read each and everything of the novel and you'll find yourself dwelling on the dilemma. Thinking about it when you should be sleeping. Given the circumstances, would you tell your sister what happened? I recommended this novel to all my friends. It's a book you can read more than once. I highly promote this new novel to all my readers

Not Telling Overview

A traumatic accident changes the lives of two sisters, Karen and Jenny, unleashing hate, jealousy and betrayal. Someone from their past comes back and Jenny is faced with a huge dilemma. Should she tell?

The Fearless Mrs. Goodwin (Kindle Single) Review

You probably already have some of the story from the other blurbs but listen up anyway there's more to tell: The biggest bank robbery in the Big Apple's history, pulled off in broad daylight on one of the city's busiest commercial streets. Even in the annals of crime, the heist was brazen. This is the account of the detective who broke the case.
It's a story made all the more remarkable because the detective was a woman in a man's world and the first female police officer, later detective, in the history of the New York Police Department.
Her name was Isabella Goodwin, 47, and they ought to have given her a medal. They did, and one day in May 1912 after everything had pretty much settled down, a million New Yorkers, almost of fifth of the denizens of the metropolis give or take a few thousand, lined the streets as six thousand police officers marched by in a four-mile parade honoring the city's finest. There in the reviewing stand (which was probably festooned with red, white and blue bunting) on the corner of Forty-Second Street and Fifth Avenue, sat now-Detective Goodwin in a special seat of honor almost right next to the Mayor himself.
The Heist of the Century as the rags called it took place on 15 February 1912. By then the pattern of brute crime from some years back (anyone remember the Five Points Gang?) was a thing of the past that most people had forgotten. New York at the time was a place where for the most part strangers "would never harm strangers, institutions (such as banks) would never be touched by violence." For the most part. This day would be different. It would make history.
A couple of thugs waylaid a taxicab with cabbie and two bank messengers who were making a money transfer from the Produce Exchange Bank at No. 10 Church Street downtown, bludgeoned the messengers bloody and senseless (one of them was still a kid of 16) and then proceeded to make off with a cool $25,000, which even by today's standards is a tidy sum.
The coppers had an idea that Edward Kinsman, aka Ed Collins, aka Eddie "The Boob" might be behind the heist and a smart Deputy Police Commissioner named George S. Dougherty came up with the notion that a widowed police matron might be of some assistance in collaring the perpetrator.
Dougherty called down to the Mercer Street Station and said, "Send me Mrs. Goodwin." Dougherty figured the key to get to Eddie was to locate his moll, a tea dancer named "Swede Annie." Police matron Goodwin was just the ticket to get that done. And to get right to the short of it without giving too much away that's how things came down. And remember this all happened; you can check out the newspapers if you don't think so.
Other than the crime itself, there isn't too much action in this story. Or drama or even suspense. The sharp-eyed Mrs. Goodwin, who by-the-way had the tiniest feet you ever saw not that that means much, called on some good common sense. She employed her knack for making "people believe she was anyone she chose." Then she got out on the street and did some pretty straightforward gumshoeing.
But for what it might lack in drama, the story makes up in atmospherics. You get a real good sense of what it was like in Old New York, with all the dust, the stench, the clatter and clang. Another thing I should say is that the author really seems to know her stuff. She did her homework on this one.
Plus, and this is maybe the best part, the story has a real surprise for the ending. You're not going to believe it. It might even make you cry. So go find out yourself what happens next with Mrs. Goodwin.

The Fearless Mrs. Goodwin (Kindle Single) Overview

Manhattan, 1912. A time of greed, corruption, scandal and distrust, when the police commissioner had this advice for the citizenry: “Don't take a criminal investigation into your own hands. Don't poke about a dead body. Don't investigate a robbery all on your own." Then the most outrageous and brutal bank heist of the young century occurred, and the city combusted in fear and anger. Wall Street brokers were carrying guns. The police looked more ineffectual by the day. Not a single man could break the case. But perhaps a woman could. Mrs. Isabella Goodwin was a smart and resourceful police matron who had gone about as far as a woman in police work could go. The bank robbery presented a unique career opportunity. As Elizabeth Mitchell writes in "The Fearless Mrs. Goodwin", a true story so astounding it reads like fiction, only a woman could penetrate New York's underworld without attracting suspicion. When Goodwin got the call from headquarters, she was ready. With glimmering eyes, the widow with four children to support disappeared into Manhattan's underbelly. Would she return with her man? Would she make it back at all?In this Byliner Original from the new digital publisher Byliner, Elizabeth Mitchell, the author of "W: Revenge of the Bush Dynasty" and "Three Strides Before the Wire: The Dark and Beautiful World of Horse Racing" has delved into New York City's hurly-burly past and returned with a classic crime story all the more amazing for having actually happened.* * *Praise for "The Fearless Mrs. Goodwin":"What a ripsnort! Elizabeth Mitchell's exploration of New York City in the early 1900s and the remarkable woman detective who took on savvy, brutal criminals is a fascinating piece of history and a riveting story. Old-timey CSI, but much wilder, and no deodorant." - Sam Lipsyte, author of "Home Land" and "The Ask""Molls, tough guys, an insane bank heist and N.Y.C.'s feistiest chick-the perfect beach read. Loved it!!!"- Simon Doonan, author of "Beautiful People""Elizabeth Mitchell is one of our greatest and most compelling nonfiction voices, and her latest is an illuminating and engaging story of a woman and of a time when men were men-which was one of the problems of that time. This is a terrific story." - Jon Meacham, author of "American Lion" and "American Gospel""Elizabeth Mitchell brings to life the story of Isabella Goodwin, New York's first female police detective, with deep reporting and evocative details. This Film Noir tale of early New York is a scintillating read that grips you from the first page and never lets up."- Darcey Steinke, author of "Easter Everywhere" and "Suicide Blonde"."A fascinating real-life crime story, starring New York City's first female detective, and 1912 New York in all its corrupt and vivid glory."- Katha Pollitt, author of "Learning to Drive"

Lethal Experiment (a Donovan Creed Novel) Review

I give 5 stars to all John Locke books, but I would give 6 stars to this one if I could. Not only is it a page turning thriller - it's the kind of book that forces the reader to have an opinion from page 1. And that's hard to find in thrillers and crime novels. Sure, he'll keep you on your toes - and you better be ready for a surprise - but this is also a novel to read with your friends. It's ripe for a fun, light hearted moral debate. I read the whole thing on the beach in an afternoon - couldn't put it down.

Lethal Experiment (a Donovan Creed Novel) Overview

What if someone offered you $100,000 with the only stipulation being that a murderer would be killed if you accept the money? Would you take it? The people who choose to take it are about to find out the ramifications of their decisions to be part of this Lethal Experiment!Donovan Creed, former CIA assassin, is a smart-aleck tough guy who can't resist a noble cause. Despite a ton of baggage and a penchant for call girls, he always finds a way to beat the bad guys. In this sequel to Lethal People, Creed is forced to choose between his thriving contract-killer business, his part in the Lethal Experiment, and his desire to live a normal life with the beautiful Kathleen Gray and her newly-adopted daughter, Addie. Before that can happen, he has to take care of some lethal business involving a former lover.Lethal Experiment is a breezy and fun page-turner, featuring grisly humor, outrageous characters, and sexy dialogue.

The Last Coyote (Harry Bosch) Review

It's time in Bosch's life to blow the leaves off his mother's grave, loosen the dirt around it and dig deep for the answers not only to his mother's murder, but to many of his problems resulting from his insecure childhood. This is helped by the fact that he is suspended for pushing a superior through a plate glass window and sent to a police shrink. While he is on forced leave, he decides to resolve these problems, of course, against all company policy. But his view is "Everybody counts or nobody counts." As he unravels the mystery, it seems to him that the murder of his mother didn't count because she was just a woman of the streets. Both this theme and the theme of a reappearing coyote (lost, hungry and bewildered) occur again and again in this gripping, forceful novel. The coyote and Bosch are drawn together - like to like - and it seems to Bosch that both he and the coyote are a vanishing breed. I defy you to put Connelly's book down for more than a few hours, if at all.
He is a master of twists, surprises and impeccable logic that carry you to the end in a whirlwind of pleasure and excitement. This one has a finish that is amazing and shocking. It's content will stay with you a lone time, perhaps forever,as you contemplate this world and those who live in it everyday.I maintain the best way to read Bosch is from the beginning with THE BLACK ICE - and follow in sequence. Michael Connelly has now won three awards for his novels. Everytime I think I have found my favorite another comes along to show me there cannnot be one favorite - only Michael Connelly himself, as a talented and intriguing artist. Angels Flight is the next in the series. His non-Bosch novels, The Poet and Blood Work are other extremely fine examples of his genius.

Life Support (Santee, Book 1) Review

The marketers try to convince us that every writer of legal thrillers is "the next John Grisham." Within the Christian market, the twist goes like this: "he's the Christian John Grisham." (As if Grisham's books aren't often Christian in content!)
Well, I'm here to say that two writers live up to the pretentious billing. Randy Singer, who recently won a Christy Award for "Directed Verdict," is one of them. Robert Whitlow, also a Christy Award winner, is the other. Both authors tell gripping tales with Christian themes and believable characters. Both are capable of matching the best legal thrillers out there.
In "Life Support," Robert Whitlow tells a story both simple and serpentine, both vicious and full of grace. I picked up the book and found myself hooked by the attempted murder at the beginning (which the back cover should not have given away...shame, shame!). The guilty wife is soon trapped by circumstances and connives to protect herself, dragging an unwitting and honorable attorney, Alexia Lindale, into her scheme. Lindale is a likeable character, and I enjoyed following her spiritual, romantic, and legal journey. Within three sittings, I had devoured the novel. Although Whitlow steps away from the story once or twice to deliver mini-sermons, he always speaks truth. And, in the book's conclusion, he was careful to play his hand lightly, thus adding to the impact.
I highly recommend this book, and believe it is Whitlow's finest to date. With these authors presenting such compelling evidence, who can honestly discount the legal thriller's ability to make a strong case for God's working in everyday humanity?
I rest my case.

Life Support (Santee, Book 1) Overview

Alexia Lindale knows her new case is a matter of life and death. She doesn't have a clue what it will do to her heart...and soul.

From the Christy-award-winning author of The List, The Trial, and The Sacrifice comes this twisting tale of tough decisions, mixed motives, and mysterious, healing grace.

Baxter Richardson survived a fall from a cliff while hiding in the mountains. Whether he'll make it through the next few weeks is unclear. His survival depends on the machines that help him breathe. On the haunted, unstable wife who wants to pull the plug and hide her secrets. On the doting father who wants him alive for reasons of love and money. On the conflicting legal documents that send the fight to court. And, on the music and prayers of an extraordinarily gifted pianist.

Wish List (a Donovan Creed Novel) Review

This little page turner of a book houses laughter and thrills between its binding. Well written, Locke does a good job of of using adult themes to tell a story that is not only entertaining, but also informative. Surprisingly enough, the tale of Buddy Pancake can be seen as a cautionary tale. A tale that does not hit you over the face with life lessons and instead uses humor to get its point across. Twists and turns scattered throughout the novel make it a book that is hard to put down.

Wish List (a Donovan Creed Novel) Overview

Be careful what you wish for! When Buddy Pancake and his drinking buddies stumble across the Wish List website, they jokingly post their “impossible" wishes. Imagine their surprise when, one by one, the wishes start coming true! But Buddy and his pals neglected to read the fine print explaining the price they must pay for the wishes they've been granted.Wish list is a compelling, nail-biting, laugh-out-loud thriller in the tradition of Saving Rachel.

Up Jumped the Devil (Darryl Billups Mystery) Review

Darryl Billups, Baltimore Maryland Police Reporter, has to deal with office politics, personal relationships, and the evils of race hate and domestic terrorism. Walker has an excellent ear for conversations, and an excellent eye for real life situations. There is little need for suspension of disbelief, so well structured is the plot and the characterizations. A nice blend of public and private, suspense and romance.
