Passion ((Fallen)) Review

After the last book, Torment, I was pretty excited to see more of Luce and Daniel's story and how her past lives played into their current love. Passion does not disappoint. The reader is taken through many of their different romances and you learn along with Luce how much they really do love each other.
It was a nice change of pace to have the chapters alternate between Luce and Daniel and get his perspective on different situations, considering we didn't know very much about him for the first two books. We finally get more of his personality and his feelings for Luce.
One of the things I was a bit disappointed about is that there wasn't much room for any of the supporting characters that I know many of us have come to love: Arianne, Shelby, Steven/Francesca, etc. However, considering that this is Luce's journey through her past lives, there isn't really much room for others beyond her and Daniel and some cameos from the others.
The ending perfectly sets up the final installment, Rapture, and leaves you rather frustrated that we have to wait until NEXT YEAR to get the last book. Passion is definitely a great read and a natural progression of Luce's story and never feels forced or as if the author was just looking to stretch out the series. I'd recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed the first two books!

Passion ((Fallen)) Overview

Luce would die for Daniel. And she has. Over and over again. Throughout time, Luce and Daniel have found each other, only to be painfully torn apart: Luce dead, Daniel left broken and alone. But perhaps it doesn't need to be that way. . . .Luce is certain that something-or someone-in a past life can help her in her present one. So she begins the most important journey of this lifetime . . . going back eternities to witness firsthand her romances with Daniel . . . and finally unlock the key to making their love last.Cam and the legions of angels and Outcasts are desperate to catch Luce, but none are as frantic as Daniel. He chases Luce through their shared pasts, terrified of what might happen if she rewrites history.Because their romance for the ages could go up in flames . . . forever.

Sweeping across centuries, PASSION is the third novel in the unforgettably epic FALLEN series.
From the Hardcover edition.

I Am Number Four (Lorien Legacies) Review

Man, this book is seriously garnering heaps of exposure, what with its already having been optioned for a movie, this movie scheduled for a 2011 release. I AM NUMBER FOUR, which admittedly is an awesome title, is penned by someone named Pittacus Lore, who claims to be a ten thousand year old space alien seeking to warn us of hostile other aliens currently lurking in our midst. This is cute. Except that two folks named Jobie Hughes and James Frey are the actual authors.
The high stakes premise goes like this: Nine alien children have fled their annihilated homeworld of Lorien and have sought refuge on Earth. Having scattered to the winds, they are being hunted down, one by one, by a separate and malevolent extraterrestrial race from a dying planet. Thanks to a quasi-mystical protective charm placed on the Nine, they can only be killed in order (although, my bet is that Number One doesn't regard this charm as all that "protective"). As the book opens, three of the Nine have already been tracked down and murdered. So we come to Number Four.
His name used to be Daniel Jones. It used to be something else before that, and then something else before that, and so on. Ten years on Earth, ten years of hiding and staying always on the move and staying safe and alive... this is the life of Number Four and his guardian and mentor whose name is Henri (oddly, Henri's alien accent sounds very much like a French accent). Number Four has just collected a new scar circling his right ankle, this an indicator that another of the Nine has been recently slain. Three scarred rings around his ankle, and so Number Four knows he's next. And it's time to pack up the bags again, time again to get the eff out of Dodge.
Henri and Number Four - or "John Smith," his new assumed name - have always gravitated to tiny towns, conjecturing that their hunters would stick out more like sore thumbs in tiny towns. They end up in Paradise, Ohio. For John it's another try at blending in in school but without making friends, because no one can be trusted. Except that it's a little different this time. John Smith befriends a geeky kid who is a science-fiction enthusiast. He adopts a stray mutt named Bernie Kosar (and Bernie Kosar, by the way, is easily the book's breakout character). And John Smith also meets a girl. So much for staying on one's guard.
My first impression, while reading the first few pages of this book, was that this whole thing is very reminiscent of two short-lived television sci-fi shows: THE POWERS OF MATTHEW STAR from the early '80s and, more recently, ROSWELL. But then, pressing on, I guess it's inevitable that comparisons to the X-Men would surface. The Nine teens are holing up while waiting for their superhuman powers (called Legacies) to develop. These Legacies vary, and there's no guessing as to which abilities a Nine would latch up to. Number Four is at that age when his Legacies would shortly begin to crop up. And they do start cropping up, one by one, and there is a really fun factor in watching our sympathetic alien boy try to cope with each incoming talent.
Gratifyingly, the alien hunters from Mogadore aren't only downright intimidating, they seem even more powerful than the Nine and their guardians (and the guardians aren't at all equipped with superpowers). This drives up the suspense. What I AM NUMBER FOUR has going for it is its irresistible sci-fi/superhero premise and a pace that really moves. Number Four is a likable protagonist, although someone needs to explain to him the exact definition of keeping a low profile. After all, dude is supposed to be in hiding and fitting in. He really doesn't do much of either. None of the supporting cast break out of their stereotypical mold, and only the scene-stealing dog Bernie Kosar seems to be an original character. I will say that John's geeky pal Sam does come up with a touching reason for why he's such a sci-fi freak and why he wears those fugly prescription glasses. And as much as I dig Sarah, her and John Smith's teen romance feels like any other teen romance in YA lit. It comes in a nice, predictable package. Sarah is gorgeous and nice... and, well, bland. Another issue I have concerns a high school bully whose turnaround comes too abruptly. Perhaps the most intriguing element in the book concerns the mystery surrounding the very peculiar Bernie Kosar (see how I keep coming back to the dog?).
I AM NUMBER FOUR is the first book in a planned six-book series, and it reads very visual, especially in the explosive action sequences, and no wonder this is being made into a movie. Number Four performs bits of astounding derring-do throughout the book, but things get really amped up during the final 90 pages. It all culminates in one of those blistering "Release the Kraken!" Jim Butcher-type paranormal (except it's sci-fi) shoot-'em-outs. I can see why Bay and Spielberg are salivating so.
I liked this book, and will most definitely be thre when the sequels come out. But here's the thing, if you're hanging your hat on something that's on par with the likes of Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games series or even Michael Grant's Gone novels, this won't suit you. I AM NUMBER FOUR isn't as immersing or resonant as those books. THE HUNGER GAMES made me well up in places. GONE reads like LORD OF THE FLIES as co-authored by Rod Serling and Stephen King. I AM NUMBER FOUR had me eating up all the "superhero without a costume" elements, and it's always nice when you can transfer yourself onto a central character who is superstrong and superfast and who won't back down from bullies. I did really like that a surprise character shows up very late in the book, and it looks like she'll be heavily featured in future installments. I'll give this one 4 stars out of 5, because I'm shallow like that and big, bold, f/x-heavy fighty fights never ever fail to transfix me. And because the dog Bernie Kosar is in it.

A Single Deadly Truth (A Steve Decatur Thriller) Review

I couldn't put it down. It moves very quickly. As an ex-Navy person I devoured the depictions on the water. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes suspence. Urban takes us on a hunt for sunken treasure and leaves us satisfied.

A Single Deadly Truth -- an exciting new read for the summer of 2011. * * * * *"Single Deadly is a fast read that blends sunken treasure, deep-sea diving, fast boats and a cast of characters that run from bad guys to real bad guys to really really bad guys. Ryan's Return Review

Ryan's Return is a wonderful book, a hard one to put down. Barbara Freethy tells a story of a family torn apart by scandals and secrets that can only be reunited with love. There is the story of Ryan, the town's "bad boy" and his attraction with Kara, a good girl. A secondary love story is included, with Andrew, Ryan's brother. This novel tells a story of a father who can never stop loving his younger son. Brothers once close, now seperated by misunderstanding. Its a tale of forgiveness, forgiving once parents, children, and girlfriends for the sins in their pasts. Its a tale of rising river, the fathers loves of that rushing water and Ryan's fear of the same river that makes his father and brother complete. Ms. Freethy employs the use of comic relief in this heavely emotional story. One example is the fist fight Andrew and Ryan get into that lands them in jail. Read it and I garantee that you won't be able to put it down.

Shattered Dreams Review

I am a little torn with this review - between 3 ½ and 4 stars.
Lady Elyssa Prescott has a limp from a childhood accident and is painfully aware of her `imperfection' thanks to the reaction of `society'. Her siblings are fiercely protective of her and want her to be happy. Her sisters create a correspondence romance, realise it is a mistake and then Elyssa's brother Harrison decides to distract her by inviting someone to charm her for a 2-week party at their country estate.
He calls upon an old school friend with a reputation for the ladies, Brentan Montgomery, Earl of Charfield and offers him a foal from one of his Arabian horses for simply escorting his sister socially - warning him to keep proper distance.
Before the ploy can even begin Brent meets Elyssa out riding and is enthralled by her. She is an outstanding rider and shares his love of horses. His attraction is genuine and he truly sees her wonderful qualities. For the first time in her life, she is made to feel desired and attractive. However, the agreement with her brother hangs in the air above them like a hatchet waiting to fall.
Alongside the development of their story, there is a parallel story of Harrison and Lady Cassandra. They meet again after 4 years, following a terrible scandal and betrayal, only to realise that they were unwilling pawns in a game and so much time has been lost. Real danger now puts all of their lives at stake.
I liked the story and very much liked the 2 main characters, but the secondary plot could have been a story in its own right.
Overall a good read, but not quite up there for a 5 star rating.

Shattered Dreams Overview

Brentan Montgomery, Earl of Charfield has one love - his stable of Arabian horses. When he is offered breeding rights to the Marquess of Fellingsdown's prize Arabian, El Solidar, if for two weeks he acts as companion to Fellingsdown's sister, he doesn't care if the reclusive Lady Elyssa has three chins and a dozen hairy moles, the prize at the end is worth anything he has to endure. But when he meets the elusive Lady Elyssa Prescott, all thoughts of gaining a prize Arabian colt disappear. He realizes he's met the woman of his dreams - if only he can keep her from discovering the deceit that brought them together and convince her that her imperfections don't matter to him. Lady Elyssa Prescott knows what it's like to be ridiculed and shunned. But when Brent Montgomery lets her glimpse a world where her limitations aren't important, she believes it's possible for her dreams to become a reality. Until she discovers the man with whom she's fallen in love was ‘hired' to offer her everything she's always dreamed of having. The cruel reality of a love built on deceit shatters both their dreams and threatens to destroy their lives forever.

Awaken the Highland Warrior Review

Awaken the Highland Warrior by Anita Clenney
Paranormal Romance -May 1st, 2011
4 stars
Inventive and charming, those who love Karen Marie Moning's time travel Highlander series will be sure to delight in this book!
After all these years, Bree finally thinks she has found a real treasure. But she is in the shock of her life when open the hidden vault and unearths a hunky highlander instead of gold! At first she can't believe she found a man inside, especially one named Faelan, who claims to be 150 years from the past! Even if he is handsome, he doesn't quite make up for loosing a whole lot of riches. And his outrageous claim that he comes from the past makes her doubt his sanity. However, when she discovers her Grandma's secret book and reads about fearless warriors with magical talismans who hunt demons to save humanity. She slowly starts to believe that he may be speaking the truth, no matter how fantastical it sounds. And he bears a striking resemblance to an old painting of a handsome rogue that she has often fantasized about. But according to her Grandma's book, these vaults are actually `time vaults' and used to hold demons until Judgement. So is Faelan an evil demon in disguise or the warrior of her heart?
I really liked the instant attraction between the two main characters and found myself quickly getting involved in this story. Bree is bright, mischievous and plucky. Faelan is determined to try to find the demon he hunted 150 years ago, but first he must learn this new world. It was fun to read him explore our modern times. Even though some of the story is a little outrageous, it made me only want to read more. The time vault particularly fascinated me. When it was opened many characters were very interested in it and this really adds mystery of the story. I also liked this book because Bree really grows and learns that she has more depth than even she believes. Girl power!
Surprising, entertaining and adventurous, I can only hope the author plans future books with more highland warriors!

A Matter of Choice Review

It is so very reassuring to know that authors like Laura Landon will continue to bring beautiful, original stories to those of us who love English Regencies and Victorians. In A MATTER OF CHOICE, Allie and Joshua battle their very powerful magnetism for one another, certain that giving in to it would be a betrayal of every promise they've ever made to themselves. But in giving in, they fuel the fury of a man who would rather see them dead than happy. This is a great read, a great story, a great love.

A Matter of Choice Overview

Joshua Camden, Marquess of Montfort, will do everything in his power to save his precious Graystone Manor - even take a wife he doesn't want. But he isn't prepared for the one demand the woman who holds the power to save his precious Graystone makes - that he remain faithful forever. Lady Allison Townsend would rather go to her grave a spinster than marry a man who embarrasses her with his string of mistresses. But when she's given no choice but to marry one of London's most well-known rakes and womanizers, she refuses to go to the altar without a stipulation of her own - that the man she marries never share his bed with another woman. But neither Allison nor Joshua is prepared for the dangers they're forced to face and the choices they're forced to make to protect their happiness - as well as their hearts.

Lethal Experiment (a Donovan Creed Novel) Review

I give 5 stars to all John Locke books, but I would give 6 stars to this one if I could. Not only is it a page turning thriller - it's the kind of book that forces the reader to have an opinion from page 1. And that's hard to find in thrillers and crime novels. Sure, he'll keep you on your toes - and you better be ready for a surprise - but this is also a novel to read with your friends. It's ripe for a fun, light hearted moral debate. I read the whole thing on the beach in an afternoon - couldn't put it down.

Lethal Experiment (a Donovan Creed Novel) Overview

What if someone offered you $100,000 with the only stipulation being that a murderer would be killed if you accept the money? Would you take it? The people who choose to take it are about to find out the ramifications of their decisions to be part of this Lethal Experiment!Donovan Creed, former CIA assassin, is a smart-aleck tough guy who can't resist a noble cause. Despite a ton of baggage and a penchant for call girls, he always finds a way to beat the bad guys. In this sequel to Lethal People, Creed is forced to choose between his thriving contract-killer business, his part in the Lethal Experiment, and his desire to live a normal life with the beautiful Kathleen Gray and her newly-adopted daughter, Addie. Before that can happen, he has to take care of some lethal business involving a former lover.Lethal Experiment is a breezy and fun page-turner, featuring grisly humor, outrageous characters, and sexy dialogue.

Wish List (a Donovan Creed Novel) Review

This little page turner of a book houses laughter and thrills between its binding. Well written, Locke does a good job of of using adult themes to tell a story that is not only entertaining, but also informative. Surprisingly enough, the tale of Buddy Pancake can be seen as a cautionary tale. A tale that does not hit you over the face with life lessons and instead uses humor to get its point across. Twists and turns scattered throughout the novel make it a book that is hard to put down.

Wish List (a Donovan Creed Novel) Overview

Be careful what you wish for! When Buddy Pancake and his drinking buddies stumble across the Wish List website, they jokingly post their “impossible" wishes. Imagine their surprise when, one by one, the wishes start coming true! But Buddy and his pals neglected to read the fine print explaining the price they must pay for the wishes they've been granted.Wish list is a compelling, nail-biting, laugh-out-loud thriller in the tradition of Saving Rachel.

Lethal People (A Donovan Creed Novel) Review

This is a novel dealing with a primary character named Donovan Creed. In his primary job, he works for homeland security killing terrorists. Since this doesn't fill all of his time he also tests out torture devices for the military and sometimes does contract killings for the mob. Not necessarily the type of person you think of when you want to have a fun time or a romantic evening. Donovan really is a nice guy though. It is just that his work tends to give him a different outlook on life and this makes him sometimes awkward when dealing with people in "normal" situations.
In Lethal People Donovan gets a call from his daughter who is concerned about the man who is engaged to his ex wife. Donovan finds out the man is a "reformed" wife beater and while investigating him meets a young burn victim whose family died in a house fire. He likes the girl and checks out the fire and finds that it was arson. He figures out why the fire was set and who was responsible and sets out to find justice for all involved.
"Lethal People" by John Locke is a book that shows us that just because you kill people for a living doesn't necessarily make you a bad guy.

Lethal People (A Donovan Creed Novel) Overview

Donovan Creed, a former CIA assassin, is a very tough man with a weakness for very easy women. Meet him in LETHAL PEOPLE a relentlessly entertaining crime novel that's often LOL - bizarre funny! The action is fast and furious, the dialogue smart, savvy and sexy. The story is filled with quirky characters and clever surprises.

The Love You Crave (A Donovan Creed Novel) Review

This is book EIGHT in the CREED SERIES. I noticed some negative reviews on some of his earlier books, luckily I read the the first books in the series and didn't start with number 5, 6, or 7, (START AT THE BEGINNING PEOPLE). I made the mistake of reading "Lethal Experiment" first, but enjoyed it so much I went looking for more. It's much better if you read them in order: (1.) Lethal People (2.) Lethal Experiment (3.) Saving Rachel (4.) Now & Then (5.) Wish List (6.) A Girl Like You
(7.) Vegas Moon (8.) The Love You Crave.
I love his books, and yet never heard of him until I received my Kindle at Christmas. His books are (LAUGH OUT LOUD) funny, even in public, which I have many times since I started reading them and that's a head turner believe me. If you need to be lifted his books are fantastic to make you forget all the problems in your life. I read occasional pages to my husband and he even laughs, which is soooo rare.
For the money his books are a most entertaining purchase, as I've paid much more for a lot less.

The Love You Crave (A Donovan Creed Novel) Overview

In this eighth book of the series, former CIA assassin Donovan Creed finds himself at odds with mob-connected Tony Spumoni and practically everyone else he knows, including his boss Darwin, lover Gwen, daughter Kimberly, protégé Callie, co-worker Lou, physician Doc Howard, assorted board members, terrorists, and even a zoo full of angry monkeys!Preliminary reviews: “I know this makes me appear insane, but all week I've burst into laughter at the most inappropriate times because of this book!" “I wanted to stop turning pages, but couldn't!" “Vintage Locke: lightning-fast dialogue, crazy situations, insane twists and turns, and general craziness!"

Cold Vengeance (Special Agent Pendergast) Review

Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child have been writing tales of Special Agent Aloysius X. L. Pendergast since 1995's Relic. And I have been a mostly loyal fan in the years since. But I might as well admit that Pendergast and I engaged in a trial separation these past few years. However, I just read Fever Dream and I remembered why I had stuck with him for more than a decade. You don't just toss a relationship like that away.
And I'm hooked again. Cold Vengeance is book two in the Helen Pendergast Trilogy, in which the special agent is hunting the reason for and the identity of his wife's murderers. It begins just a few weeks after the events of Fever Dream. In brief, the novel is a deliciously drawn out cat and mouse game between Pendergast and the only opponent left standing in the last novel. As this pursuit unfolds, Pendergast comes to realize, "that he truly had not known his beloved wife. Like so many other fallible human beings, he had been blinded by love. He had not even begun to crack the ultimate mystery of her identity."
But he does make progress in that ultimate mystery--with the help of more than a few characters we've met in prior novels. Who was Helen Pendergast, and what was her family connected to? At one point, Pendergast's opponent challenges, "You think your fight's just with me, but you're wrong... The fact is you have no idea, no idea, of what you're dealing with."
By the end of the book, both Pendergast and the reader will have an inkling, but there's much yet to be uncovered. Preston and Child are masterful at building suspense, and the end of this novel will be the start of a torturous wait for the final volume in the trilogy. The book ends on more than one huge cliff-hanger. Along the way, there are shocks, twists, and revelations aplenty. This is some highly entertaining storytelling, and my favorite in the series for many years.
I was a fool to leave Pendergast these last few years! I will be waiting anxiously until I can see him again in the conclusion to this most compelling story.

Cold Vengeance (Special Agent Pendergast) Overview

Devastated by the discovery that his wife, Helen, was murdered, Special Agent Pendergast must have retribution. But revenge is not simple. As he stalks his wife's betrayers-a chase that takes him from the wild moors of Scotland to the bustling streets of New York City and the darkest bayous of Louisiana-he is also forced to dig further into Helen's past. And he is stunned to learn that Helen may have been a collaborator in her own murder.Peeling back the layers of deception, Pendergast realizes that the conspiracy is deeper, goes back generations, and is more monstrous than he could have ever imagined-and everything he's believed, everything he's trusted, everything he's understood . . . may be a horrific lie.COLD VENGEANCENothing is what it seems.

I Love the Earl Review

I truly enjoyed the book, the plot was a bit predictable but even so it had me laughing and intrigued non the less.
The Heroine is a 30 year old spinter that recently had the "luck" of having her brother become a Duke. Her brother settles an exuberant dowry on her making her a heiress an obviously the desired wife of any penniless men. The hero is of course one of the penniless man in pursuit but boy is he charming, sexy and just down right lovable. The brother of course dosn't want a fortun hunter for his sister and there comes the conflict...The premise of the book is not unusual but the dialogs are fun and you get to feel the story and the romance in it, which is what I most enjoy in a book. So yes I would recommend it for an afternoon read. Note: this is not a full length novel (11 chapters) it took me about 3 to 4 hours to read...

BLIND FAITH Review

This is my first read of C.J. Lyons and wow! What a first impression! This novel is just awesome. It hooks you from the start. Very soon at the start of the book, the protagonist of the story, Sarah, witnesses the exection of her husband and son's killer (who is also a serial killer). The one thing that Sarah wanted.... needed.... from this man was his admission of where he'd buried her loved ones bodies. He'd confessed to the others. But he didn't give Sarah the one thing she wanted to know. It'd been two years since she'd lost her husband and son and Sarah tries to move on, tries to give those closest in her life the impression that she's moving on, but can't until she finds out where her family is.
The author portrays the settings like a painting. I felt I was there with Sarah. Those who Sarah trusted the most turn out to be the ones she has to save her own life from. Hers and her family's. The title speaks of the underlying message in this book. When you feel a real love in your heart for someone, and even if it seems like all "evidence" is stacked against them, your blind faith and knowing what's in your heart (and theirs) will see you both through.
There were a lot of surprises in this novel, which really held my attention. I agree with others.... it was very hard to put this book down. A wonderful, wonderful read!

BLIND FAITH Overview

CJ Lyons' romantic thrillers have been described as "the perfect blend of romance and suspense" by New York Times Bestseller Sandra Brown.TOP PICK! "This story is so fast paced with so many mesmerizing characters, 'fantastic' is not high enough praise. Lyons proves once again that she is a master of suspense and nontraditional romance."~RT Book ReviewsWhen her husband and son are murdered, she thought she'd lost it all. But for Sarah Durandt the nightmare is just beginning...Sarah has just witnessed the execution of the man who confessed to killing her husband and son, among others. She leaves with no closure as the killer has refused her repeated requests to reveal the site of her family's graves. Sarah returns home to her small town of Hopewell in the Adirondacks Mountains and vows to search until she finds Sam and Josh. Her hunt leads her to a trail of lies and unearths a new killer. In a race to save everything she holds dear, Sarah is forced to place her faith in the man who betrayed her...her husband.

Angel: A Maximum Ride Novel Review

After reading this book, I was very disappointed. Disappointed in the writing, the flat characters, and the unsolved romantic issues.
Yes, there were some really good moments. The Gasman and Angel are the only solid characters in the book. They have some new sides to them in this book, and we really get to see them opening up. The new Fang's gang had some quirky personalities that were easy to like and comedic, as well. But that was pretty much all the redeeming qualities of this book.
Max is over-the-top emotional. Yes, I understand her choice is difficult between the love of her life Fang and her meant to be soulmate Dylan, but seriously. Dragging your fans through multiple books of this melodramatic crap is too much.
To Mr. Patterson (and his staff of writers who help him with his novels), cut to the point. Please give your fans one last Maximum Ride book worth reading, like the first three books in the series. Give us our old Max back one last time.

Angel: A Maximum Ride Novel Overview

In the seventh book in the bestselling series, evil scientists are still trying to convince Max that she needs to save the world, this time by providing the genetic link in speeding up the pace of evolution. Worse, they're trying to convince her that her perfect mate is Dylan, the newest addition to the flock. The problem is that, despite herself, Max is starting to believe it. Fang travels the country collecting his own gang of evolved humans, but the two separate flocks must unite to defeat a frightening doomsday cult whose motto is Save the Planet: Kill the Humans. And this time, the true heroine, for once, might just be little Angel.

The Knot Ultimate Wedding Planner: Worksheets, Checklists, Etiquette, Calendars, and Answers to Frequently Asked Questions Review

I bought this book the day after I got engaged, and the sentimental value the book has is really all that it has to offer. I don't understand how a website so complete like "The Knot" could manage to put out a book like this.
The information inside the book is vague and in reality, mostly meaningless. Take the "Invitations" section, for example. The chapter is 7 pages long, and out of those 7 pages, 5 1/2 of them are worksheets. Advice on how to word the invitations? This is what the book has to say: "Spend some time familiarizing yourself with all of the (frighteningly) specific wording conventions and addressing rules - if only to understand what others will expect. (We don't go into minute detail here.)" That last part isn't an understatement, since there are no pages that contain sample layouts of invites or suggested wording or phrasing for invitations. How can a wedding planner consider itself complete if it doesn't even offer one suggestion for wedding invitation phrasing?
I wish I had gone through this book better before buying it, since all this book has to offer is mediocre lists and worksheets, which, again, you could get better versions of if you went to "The Knot" website. I also have to say that the information inside is surprisingly inaccurate with some questionable etiquette outlines. If you are planning a wedding that is anything other than the conventional wedding, like a destination wedding, you'll find this book next to useless since it doesn't spend any time discussing how to arrange destination, theme, or double weddings. Another thing this book doesn't have that all books of this nature should is a back index... So there is no fast way to look up specific information.
When it comes to this book, pass. Save the $16 and just get all the info off their website. I give this book 2 stars for the quantity of worksheets it has (even though they are highly basic), and because I'm sure that everybody will find a couple of items of interest in the book, but that's about it.

Blindsight (Kindle Single) Review

Blindsight is a rarity, a most often trauma-induced medical condition in which a person without sight can "see" through the blindness without consciously registering images. A person with blindsight will navigate around a garbage can without ever visualizing the obstacle. Blindsight is seeing without seeing, the brain doing a workaround.
Simon Lewis developed blindsight after being crushed body and soul in a horrible 1994 car wreck that killed his wife of five months, left Lewis in a four-month coma and became the start of a decade-long crawl back toward daylight.
Storyboard, Panel 1 of 5: Lewis is a Hollywood kid who loves the movies and starts by shooting a high schooler, backyard version of "Macbeth." Some time later a string of progressively more main-stream B-movies follow. At the top of that heap is "C.H.U.D.2." Then the young producer latches onto a hokey script and hustles to sign 70s has-been John Travolta. The movie is about a tough talking baby who telegraphs his thoughts to the audience and bam, "Look Who's Talking" is the smash hit of 1989, beating every other hit of the year including "When Harry Met Sally" and "The Little Mermaid." At about the same time, he meets Marcy and records another triumph when she, "talkative and vivacious," agrees to marry him, "pale and bookish."
Storyboard, Panel 2: March 2, 1994. If he would have paused outside the fancy Italian restaurant they both loved to tie his shoelace before getting into their brand new Infiniti he would have driven through the intersection of Beverly Boulevard and McCadden Place a couple seconds later and missed being T-boned by that white 1978 van running the stop sign full-throttle at 75 miles per hour. In a home nearby a couple eating dinner thought a bomb had gone off. They ducked under their dinner table.
Storyboard, Panel 3: The paramedics first on the scene report no survivors in the Infiniti. Witnesses say they saw a young man climb out of the van and sprint up McCadden, never to be identified. It takes over an hour to splay the Infinity open. Rescuers are shocked to discover Lewis has a pulse. Every second that passes, more blood leaks internally filling every available space under his skin. More brain cells die. By the time Lewis is admitted to Cedars-Sinai his body has swollen to twice its normal size. Four months later, one day in April, Lewis' eyes open.
Storyboard, Panel 4: The road back is a long one. More than ten years. Lewis had lost everything. Then with struggle, gained much back. His legs are fitted with a NESS L300, a neuroprosthesis that sends impulses to nerves to help him walk. He's now a middle-aged man in his 50s. "A little advice," someone says to Lewis, "Find love again." In 2010 he writes a book "Rise and Shine" an extremely detailed chronicle of his ordeal. Life moves on.
Storyboard, Panel 5: Lewis' story doesn't have an ending, happy or sad, that packs everything up in a little square box with a cover. The ending is ambiguous and undetermined, the way life works. Lewis makes contact again with the film community. He works on a script from long ago and like the rest of us Lewis continues on, "living the non-movie version of his own life."
The Pitch: The summary doesn't begin to size up the story which is almost science fiction in its treatment of how the brain functions in reaction to terrible trauma and works to heal itself. The story is inspirational. How do you go about remaking a life? There's an otherworldly quality to Lewis's rehabilitation that blurs reality and perception and reshapes what we mean by consciousness and cognition. To me, "Blindsight" is a hero's story of endurance and resilience.

Blindsight (Kindle Single) Overview

In March of 1994, Simon Lewis was a Hollywood man on the rise. He had started in the film industry as a lawyer and worked his way up to become a big-budget studio producer. He'd helped shepherd one of the most successful comedies in film history. He'd married the love of his life. And then one night, in a few seconds, everything changed. In Blindsight, author Chris Colin unspools the remarkable true story of a horrific accident and the life that followed it. A killer at large. Unlikely twists of fate. Miraculous medical oddities. Otherworldly perceptions. Lewis's is a tale of one man's love and loss, and of the strange turns awaiting a life remade.“Colin tells Simon Lewis's story of wreckage and rebirth with economy, vividness, and grace." -Nicholson Baker," author of House of Holes and Vox“The extraordinary perceptions and insights experienced by Simon Lewis after his life-altering brain injury are fascinating to read about. This piece should remind those of us who plod through our days with healthy brains that a similar beauty and grace exists inside us waiting to be uncovered." -Ethan Watters, author of Crazy Like Us: The Globalization of the American Psyche“Only Chris Colin could make me care about the man responsible for the cheese-horror movie C.H.U.D II. Mixing a potent blend of reportage with vivid storytelling, Blindsight tells the tragic story of movie producer Simon Lewis, and his almost twenty year struggle with a strange neurological condition. Lewis's story, we know in our heart of hearts, could befall any of us." -Novella Carpenter, best-selling author of Farm City

Zero at the Bone Review

"Zero At The Bone" represents the best of both worlds. It excites the emotions in the way a good thriller should, but it also stirs the deeper feelings of loneliness and connection we associate with tragedy. With her new book, author Jane Seville balance and blends the romantic, criminal and emotional into a gripping love story of the highest caliber.
The premise is deceptively simple if one perceives this as merely a "gay romantic thriller". That said, one might expect a hitman and his dark underworld to merely serve as a backdrop or surface material for explicit homoerotic interludes. But they're not. Here, the complexities of organized crime are given as much attention and compelling detail as the emotional terrain of protagonists Jack and D's relationship. To say the aforementioned characters are vividly brought to life is to put it mildly.
Throughout the story, Seville keeps hitman D's internal tensions visceral and engaging; depicting his alertness to ubiquitous dangers while emanating sangfroid, bristling under his confidant X's censure but in need of her tutelage, drawn to civilian Jack but made anxious by him. It's all there in thoughtful detail as this is a sad, damaged man and Seville conveys his guilt and repression with aching clarity. When he decides not to take a mob ordered hit on witness Jack Francisco, the reader is privy to a provocative, no-holds barred look inside a repressed criminal at a personal crossroads. And while at first he's written to seem cold and detached, it makes it fascinating when he's skewered by the arrow of true love.
Alas, these feelings for Jack cause him to unravel, and we can feel it. Not every writer can so powerfully render that physical sense through words. Seville doesn't just write passion between men but somehow takes us inside it, so that we understand what it would be like to exist as D... to inhabit a body built up to block all emotional attachment and now suddenly be flooded with nonstop longing.
Seville's commitment to the character of Jack-- who delivers "Zero"'s romantic heart-- is equally dedicated. With his character, she incisively details one proud man's descent into fear and survival mode. At first (after deciding not to kill him) D serves as a less formal type of `Witness Protection' for Jack. And when the two fall in love the stakes are raised considerably. Open-faced with fear and bewilderment, dallying in macho even as he quivers in dire expectation, Jack is forced to undergo considerable change. And it's quite exciting it read that as he uncovers such inner-strength and ferocity, he becomes his lover's equal.
However, D is understandably at odds with his repressed homosexuality and this makes for fascinating scenes when set against Jack's lovesick weary openness. Atop it all, there's a moral imperative to Jack's character; a law-abiding medical surgeon. Hence, D's past is a considerable burden and begs moral compromise. He assesses the unsettling acts of D's hitman past and the implausibility of any real future together but cannot be free of D and the pain of loving such a man. It's as if--even in their sort time spent together-- they've marked one another for life. And it's too the author's credit that the reader genuinely believes someone like Jack could fall in love with a killer to begin with.
At first D attempts to not personalize his contact with Jack (while together in hiding) but platonic exchanges soon creak open the floodgates. There's one scene where Jack aids a wounded D-- purely as a doctor-- and the reader is reminded that slow, subtle eroticism is after all possible in modern gay fiction. Now the actual sex, while not particularly explicit, is still romantically explicit; revealing and withholding in perfect proportion.
"Zero" is also one of the most exciting and suspenseful novels I've read in quite some time; the story speeds along, the romance made all the more richer by the intense action sequences. Gripping as well as smart, it feels at times almost like "Brokeback Mountain" blended together with "No Country for Old Men". Even the prefatory motel sequence is marked by fury, loneliness, and the ferocious thrill of the illicit. Later on, there's a remarkable sequence in a warehouse in which D is trapped and held at gunpoint by an adversary while cradling his wounded lover. His emotional state is one anybody could fathom, though it's hard to put a name to it -- defensive acknowledgment? Pained hysteria? Seville renders the moment with brutal dialogue and evocative descriptions; a life-or-death exchange that's charged, emotional and defining with the sense that this man's last chance at happiness lays bleeding in his arms.
From this, Seville successfully lies out and examines themes that tie together beautifully while avoiding traditional rigidity of "plot". Few will be unsatisfied with the book's evocation of love between two very different men. Also, the supporting characters are vivid and finely drawn as well. The story's villains deeply unsettling but never one-note. And the book avoids an ending of soppy moralizing or fairy tale romance in favor of a kind of ambiguity whilst still allowing one to imagine certain things far past the actual end. Ultimately, what we have here is a "gay romantic thriller" that transcends all such labels to become a story with universal appeal and the kinds of characters that will stay with you forever. Trust me, it's a knockout.

Zero at the Bone Overview

After witnessing a mob hit, surgeon Jack Francisco is put into protective custody to keep him safe until he can testify. A hitman known only as D is blackmailed into killing Jack, but when he tracks him down, his weary conscience won't allow him to murder an innocent man. Finding in each other an unlikely ally, Jack and D are soon on the run from shadowy enemies.Forced to work together to survive, the two men forge a bond that ripens into unexpected passion. Jack sees the wounded soul beneath D's cold, detached exterior, and D finds in Jack the person who can help him reclaim the man he once was. As the day of Jack's testimony approaches, he and D find themselves not only fighting for their lives... but also fighting for their future. A future together.

Take the Monkeys and Run (A Barbara Marr Murder Mystery) Review

A soccer mom with three children and a just-moved-out spouse discovers monkeys in her yard, a head in unpleasant condition in the house next door, and more excitement that a soccer mom in a pleasant neighborhood should expect. There's an ex-boyfriend PI, a policeman who looks like Brad Pitt, and a really obnoxious mother. Oh, and the mafia might be involved. And somehow, it kind of makes sense.
This was very entertaining and a quick read. I really liked Barb, and I hope to read more about her and her adventures.
