Chain Reaction Review

For the record, I fully blame Simone Elkeles for my obsession with the young adult genre. Before I got my hands on a copy of Perfect Chemistry, I thought YA novels were strictly PG rated and the most passionate displays of affection was a line saying, "We made out last night." Nothing was ever discussed in detail, let alone the smoldering way Elkeles writes a love scene. As if that wasn't enough, she doesn't flinch when tackling tough subjects like gang violence and teen sexuality.
I fell in love with this series three years ago, and this final installment was just as hot and sultry as the previous two books. Luis, being the youngest, was so much fun. He didn't have the jaded cynicism his older brothers had going into this book. He was a reckless, fun guy who liked to make people laugh. This is what made the revelation about his past all the more saddening (sorry, that's all I'll say - read the book to find out what happens).
I wasn't all that crazy about Nikki. I understood she got hurt in a major way by a major creep, but I felt some times she took her mistrust in Luis too far. Towards the end I warmed up to her, but for a little while I thought she needed a good slap. I did, however, adore her friends Derek and Kendall. For some reason I looked forward to any scene they were in.
I felt parts of this book, especially the end, moved too fast. I would have liked a little more filling in the Latino Blood storyline and Luis's reactions to what he discovered. I felt that came and went too fast. Then again, it might just be me with a serious case of the Oliver Twists, making grabby hands and begging for some more because I knew this series was coming to a close.
It could be argued that Elkeles's books in this series are formulaic. After reading the first, the other two play out the same way, but I went in expecting that. There are no real surprised, but I recently saw on the news that people are almost 40% happier when they read a book or see a movie already knowing how it will end. This book is a classic example of that: I love knowing that in the Simone Elkeles's world love truly can conquer all.

I ABSOLUTELY L.O.V.E.D this book! it was so amazing and had me at the edge of my seat. I had millions of questions and as soon as one got answered, a new one formed. It's just amazing, even the Twilight Series didn't do that to me. It was just obvious what Bella was going to do next, but in THIS series, I just couldn't figure out what Caitlin or Kyle would do next.
And the love in this book was TO DIE FOR. it's just so amazing and passionate, just like out of a fairy tale.
Though, I DID find some typos and errors, but I don't really care.
I really recommend this book to people who are into vampires/mysteries/romance.
And the ending had me begging for more! I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE 5TH BOOK!!!! Hope it comes out soon, cause I can't wait too long. This SERIES (yes, ALL of the 4 books) is a 'MUST READ'

Passion ((Fallen)) Review

After the last book, Torment, I was pretty excited to see more of Luce and Daniel's story and how her past lives played into their current love. Passion does not disappoint. The reader is taken through many of their different romances and you learn along with Luce how much they really do love each other.
It was a nice change of pace to have the chapters alternate between Luce and Daniel and get his perspective on different situations, considering we didn't know very much about him for the first two books. We finally get more of his personality and his feelings for Luce.
One of the things I was a bit disappointed about is that there wasn't much room for any of the supporting characters that I know many of us have come to love: Arianne, Shelby, Steven/Francesca, etc. However, considering that this is Luce's journey through her past lives, there isn't really much room for others beyond her and Daniel and some cameos from the others.
The ending perfectly sets up the final installment, Rapture, and leaves you rather frustrated that we have to wait until NEXT YEAR to get the last book. Passion is definitely a great read and a natural progression of Luce's story and never feels forced or as if the author was just looking to stretch out the series. I'd recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed the first two books!

Pretty Little Liars #9: Twisted Review

First and foremost, I have to be completely honest with you guys; when I heard that she was writing another book, I was happy, but I was also thinking that she was just doing it to earn more money and the book would be crap. I was COMPLETELY wrong. I finished the book a few hours ago, and I love the huge twist that she came up with in Jamaica. It was very creepy and while you kind of get an "end" to it, I don't think we're given the whole story concerning the incident. Let's just say I have my own little theory about what really went down, and having read the rest of the series, I wouldn't be surprised if I was right in some way. Sara loves surprises.
The girls don't really have anyone to trust in this book. Hanna gets sucked into a con artists lies, Emily's friend has a creepy dad (and her summer break secret will make. your. jaw. DROP.), Aria's boyfriend has a new foreign roomie who is not as sweet as she pretends to be, and Spencer continues to stick her nose where it doesn't belong.
I promise that you will NOT be disappointed with this book. It did come off as a little slow at the beginning, but the story quickly gets better. If you thought book 8 was amazing, just wait until you read 9. 'Twisted' most definitely blows 'Wanted' right out of the water.

Tremble, the second book in the Celestra series did not disappoint. I read it on my Kindle in one day. It was a quick and adrenaline pumping read. In this read the Counts are still out to capture Skyla, the most powerful Celestra with the purest blood. In this adventure the usual suspects return. Skyla and her boyfriend Logan, her fake boyfriend Gage, her best friend Brielle and her boyfriend Drake who is also Skyla's step brother, the ghost of Chloe, Ellis and Michelle. In Tremble things become more complicated when Marshall comes to town posing as a substitute teacher. Marshall is a Sector who has been appointed by the Counts to capture Skyla, only he has his own agenda where Skyla is concerned. Through Marshall Skyla learns that some of her friends may be enemies in disguise. The Counts may be keeping a closer watch than she initially suspected. Meanwhile, Skyla is determined to time travel in order to save her father.
This read was filled with suspense and emotion. The action never stopped and the surprises were overwhelming. The characters continue to develop. Skyla continues to grow stronger and more confident both as an angel and a girl. Some of Logan's mystery begins to dissolve near the book's end, but this only leaves you hungrier for the next installment. Gage steals the stage a little more in this read making the reader sympathize with him even more. Then there is Michelle... Wow, if you thought she was a hag before... There is so much that happens in this book, you must read it!

When I was reading reviews for this book, I wanted to know how it compared to Forever Mine (The Moreno Brothers 1). Here are my thoughts....
This book was definitely more "steamy." It's for mature teens or adults. I loved it.
There were more twists in this book that were action based, so you get more of a variety.
The ending is better in my opinion... you have a better understanding of what will happen next.
This book was more relatable. It has a bunch of different perspectives.
I felt the need to scream at the characters more in this book; the author does a great job of showing perspective.
Although I ABSOLUTELY LOVED Forever Mine, this book appealed to me more. Both are five stars. (: I hope they help you. Buy this book. It's totally worth it.(:

I reviewed the first book, shattered, and even though i really enjoyed the story, i only gave it four stars. i wished that we got to see more of a background about the characters, and a deeper look into the dream world. well, this book definitely delivers! you can see how miss sharp has progressed as a writer since the first book, and we get more interesting, more detailed looks at the characters. plus, there is the introduction of a few new characters who i absolutely LOVED and can't wait to see more of.
my only complaint, really, is that I can't believe this is only a trilogy. i wish it were longer! it'll be very intersting to see how everything wraps up by the third book.
(PS: even if you has reservations about buying this one after reading shattered, i say GO FOR IT! this really is a better book than the first one)

I really enjoy reading Donna Fasano's romance books because she is able to capture true life in her stories. An Accidental Family is such a book. Ms. Fasano does not gloss over tragedy or try to cover up heartache which just adds depth and character to her writing. Add lots of humor and fun and you have a truely great romance. Sacred Marriage: What If God Designed Marriage to Make Us Holy More Than to Make Us Happy Review

Admittedly, I haven't read every marriage book ever written, so the title of this review is probably overstating the case. However, I have read a number of marriage books (including some more popular ones like "The Five Love Languages" and "Fit To Be Tied," which are also solid and worth reading), and this is the cream of the crop.
The overarching theme of the book is explicated clearly in its subtitle, that marriage is primarily a means of God drawing us to holiness rather than an instrument used to bring about our own happiness. This concept seems to cast a somewhat melancholy vision for marriage as a medium for unhappy relationships, and many of the other folks with whom we read the book were initially disheartened by that premise. However, after giving Thomas some time to flesh out this idea, they came around to appreciate the heart of his message.
What I love most about "Sacred Marriage" is the concept of marriage as a spiritual discipline. Just like Richard Foster in "Celebration of Discipline" is able to turn the most traditional spiritual disciplines like fasting and study into something desirable and appealing, Thomas casts a vision of marriage that just draws me to an almost feverish pitch of anticipation. From Thomas' perspective, God can and will (if I am open to His work) use my marriage as one of the primary means of drawing me to Himself. And that has nothing to do with the circumstances of my marriage at any given time or the particular ways that my wife treats me. When we open ourselves to this new perspective, our marriages have the opportunity to be totally transformational. What an exciting prospect!!!
Another part of this book that was most appealing to me was the author's interest in drawing wisdom from many centuries of church teaching about marriage and relationships. He balanced this admiration for the church fathers with the ability to critique the components of historical church teachings that warrant criticism (like the notion that the truly holy person must be single). It is a very rare author, indeed, who can make Augustine and Clement come alive in ways that really instruct and minister to us.
Ultimately, I would recommend this book to anyone who is married, has been married, or will eventually consider marriage. I first read it a few years ago when I was engaged, and it totally transformed my perspective of marriage as I entered that divine institution. Several years later, it speaks into my life again, and I truly do hope to live out God's calling toward a "sacred marriage."

The Love Dare Review

As most people might already know, this book is based upon the Christian movie "Fireproof", which is about a man who saves his marriage by completing a character-testing, 40-day list of "dares" suggested to him by his father. Like the movie, the book of course is Christian based as well.
I loved the movie and the book is more of the same. However I looked at both of them from the perspective of a person happily married for over 15 years. I can tell you that while I don't practice all the dares in the book, my spouse and I are good about doing many of them- and of course there's always room for improvement. From my personal experience, I feel like concentrating on the kinds of ideas presented in the book have been absolutely key to making our marriage last.
Now the book itself also consists of a 40-day list of dares. For each day, there's about a page and a half or so of advice, followed by a specific dare and some space for you to write down your personal reflections. Dares range from things such as practicing patience to writing out a renewal of your vows. The guys will probably particularly like Day 32!
As you can tell, I highly recommend going to see the movie and reading the book. In a society that places a high value on looks and money, while sporting a 50% divorce rate, its nice to see more movies and books coming out that get people more focused on the right values in life. Even if you don't do anything more than just glance through the book, you're going to be given something to think about. Other self-help books I enjoyed include "Finding Happiness in a Frustrating World" .

Picking up a book that's subtitle is "Reversing our Tragic Neglect of the Holy Spirit" made me feel that I was heading for a tongue lashing. Instead I found Francis Chan's new book, "Forgotten God," to be a very calm and thoughtful response to the Christian community.
There have been many books written over the years about what to believe about the Holy Spirit. Battle lines have been drawn between churches and denominations about when the Holy Spirit shows up, how He does it, and what is supposed to happen next. Chan has no axe to grind with theological debates and steers away from these often bloodstained battlegrounds. Instead he writes how Christians in western culture, regardless of what they say they believe about the third member of the Trinity, live as though the Holy Spirit had long since retired.
In seven easy to read chapters Chan covers the following topics:
* The role of the Holy Spirit as Jesus' promised gift.
* Fears and concerns about the Holy Spirit
* How theology about the Holy Spirit has more to do with how a person lives than what they say they believe.
* Motivations around the Holy Spirit and his power.
* What a relationship with the Holy Spirit can really be like.
* Letting go of manipulation and control by trusting the Holy Spirit.
* Living in true community with the Holy Spirit and with others.
For a book to be as hard hitting on these themes as it is, this tone Chan takes hardly comes across as a harsh reprimand. There is a gentleness and humility that flow through these chapters, possibly because the author often uses his shortcomings as examples. It is balanced with his unbridled passion for something better. It is a contagious proposition.
At the end of each chapter Chan presents a short biography about someone who is modeling that aspect of life with the Holy Spirit. These narratives help put the chapters, and the suggested lifestyle, into context.
For readers who have already embraced the message from Chan's first book, "Crazy Love," you will find another winner here. For those who are reading him for the first time, you have found a new, encouraging friend.

Crazy Love: Overwhelmed by a Relentless God Review

There are many voices critiquing the North American church today. The voices come from both within and without; from those who love the church and those who hate it. We all know that there is something wrong. But what? In many cases the prescription is the same while the cure varies widely. In his new book Crazy Love, first-time author Francis Chan, pastor of Cornerstone Church in Simi Valley, California, regular speaker at Passion conferences and other events, and the guy who recorded that "Just Stop and Think" evangelistic video where he walks for miles holding a surfboard, takes his opportunity to challenge the church. "This book," he says, "is written for those who want more Jesus. It is for those who are bored with what American Christianity offers. It is for those who don't want to plateau, who would rather die before their convictions do." It is a book that is meant to change the way Christians live their lives.
There are two ways of critiquing the church. We can critique out of love or out of disgust. Chan is committed to critiquing the church as an act of love. In a recent interview, when asked about the emergent church, he said this: "As a pastor I hear a lot of emergent leaders talk about what is wrong with the church. It comes across as someone who doesn't love the church. I'm a pastor first and foremost, and I'm trying to offer a solution or a model of what church should look like. I'm going back to scripture and seeing what the church was in its simplest form and trying to recreate that in my own church. I'm not coming up with anything new. I'm calling people to go back to the way it was. I'm not bashing the church. I'm loving it." And his love for the church is obvious throughout this book.
The format of Crazy Love is straightforward and effective. Chan dedicates three chapters to renewing our understanding of the character of God and seven chapters calling Christians to examine themselves. Within the book are two ongoing themes that are going to get people talking.
The first theme is that we must painstakingly examine ourselves. We cannot assume we are saved, or to use the biblical metaphor, we cannot assume that we are the good soil. Chan calls the reader to a serious self-inventory through a chapter that provides a profile of the lukewarm. He concludes, "a lukewarm Christian is an oxymoron; there's no such thing. To put it plainly, churchgoers who are `lukewarm' are not Christians. We will not see them in heaven." God wants all or nothing.
The second theme is deeply counter-cultural, going against the stream of both Christian and secular culture. It is this: live your best life later. Chan wants to see Christians living differently--living in a way that is markedly different from those around them. He wants to see Christians forgoing much of what we consider necessary, what we consider our due, in order to focus on treasures that are eternal. He wants us to get outside the realm of what is comfortable to us and focus instead on radical obedience. "God doesn't call us to be comfortable. He calls us to trust Him so completely that we are unafraid to put ourselves in situations where we will be in trouble if He doesn't come through."
These two themes and a focus on the Scriptures serve to create a powerful and deeply challenging book. There is a very obvious commitment here to teach Scriptural principles from the Scriptures and to invite the reader to verify what he is writing from those same Scriptures. Not surprisingly, the book's weakest chapter is the one that depends least on the Bible. It is a chapter providing examples of men and women who have made radical choices to live radically different. At least a couple of examples are of people who are probably not the best examples overall because as they've jettisoned their old lives, they've also jettisoned too much good theology.
That small critique aside, I found that this is a paradigm-shaking book with a message that Christians desperately need to hear. Too many of us are living too safely and too easily. But for the brief moments we spend at church each week, we are practically indistinguishable from the unbelievers around us. This is not the way it is meant to be. The church could use a loving exhortation and Chan delivers well.

A Love That Multiplies: An Up-Close View of How They Make it Work Review

I'm an adult who is the oldest of five siblings, and I've always wanted to have a family of a similar size. A 5-kid group sounds like a massive family to most everyone that I've met, but for us it's natural. We wouldn't want to have one brother or sister less--every person is unique and wonderful, and our lives are richer for having each other. The Duggars of TLC's show 19 Kids and Counting feel the exact same way about their kids, except that they have four times as many kids as my family! This book covers a lot of their child-rearing principles and spiritual beliefs, as well as the recent challenges in their lives, starting from the time in late 2009 when Michelle went into early labor with their 19th child.
I had never gotten to see the Duggars' TV show, but I was curious about their family and found this book to be the perfect way to learn more. They have been through some major struggles in recent years, but they've always held close to their faith in God's goodness. Early chapters of A Love That Multiplies discuss the medical emergency that arose when Michelle delivered baby Josie three full months before her due date. It was chilling to realize just how close they came to losing Josie, who was just 22 ounces at birth. I had not previously been aware of how hard a "micro-preemie" baby struggles just to survive. In Josie's case, she was having to live through three months of growth that should have happened in the safety of the womb. And yet God provided for their family in times of trouble--a lady they didn't even know offered to let the whole family borrow her house so they could be close to little Josie while she was in such a life-threatening condition.
The Duggar kids may be the focus of the show, but this book makes it clear just how important the parents' attitudes affect the overall family dynamic. By the things Jim Bob and Michelle say about each other, it becomes apparent that they are really in love. It's a big deal that they can express so much admiration for each other in times of stress. Jim Bob sounds like a real problem-solver when he does things like hooking up the generator on the family bus to the house so they could power a washer and dryer during an ice storm that knocked out their power. Michelle seems very savvy, too, with her quiet discipline, creative homeschooling methods, and commitment to meeting her children's emotional needs. I love how conscious Michelle is of how her attitude affects her kids...if you've ever been a child-care provider in any capacity, you know how quickly your own negative behaviors can show up in the kids! But fortunately, the same thing goes for positive traits.
It's also encouraging to see that the Duggar kids are not at all "cloistered" or "sequestered" or any of those other big words for kids who are kept at home and not allowed to see any of the world. These kids have met film crews and magazine representatives and have gone on mission trips to El Salvador. The kids all play music (piano, violin or harp), but they also have their own interests--the older girls like to cook and sew, but the oldest two have also undergone firefighter training work as volunteer firefighters! The oldest two sons own an auto sales lot and a towing business, and are committed to living debt-free. The book mentions a lot of the Duggars' principles for business-running, finance management, and homeschooling, and there's a handy list of resources provided in the back of the book.
It's also important to note that the Duggars aren't forwarding a big political movement--they aren't trying to get everybody in America to have a bunch of offspring; this is just what God has called them to do. It is so touching to see how much they love Jesus Christ and how much they want to meet the needs of others, whether it's baking their TV producer a cake on his birthday, taking cookies to the local fire department, or putting on a concert for residents at a nursing home. I think that supporting the Duggars is not a matter of whether we personally want 19 kids (there are probably not many people who do), or whether we think that most families should be this size (it's probably not practical on a large scale)--it's about whether they seem to be loving and nurturing the kids they have. From all evidence, they're doing just fine. May God bless the Duggars and bless all of our families, whatever their size.

Hold Me Tight is also an excellent resource for couples working things out on their own. It provides a clear and solid guideline for repairing hurt and restoring connection. I am recommending it to the couples in my practice, and the reports coming back about how helpful and transformative Johnson's approach is have been glowing!

The Five Love Languages of Children Review

Chapman, with co-writer Ross Campbell, M.D., have written The Five Love Languages Of Children, which applies the love language theory to children. How can you tell your child's main love language? Chapman offers these suggestions:
1. Observe how your child expresses love to you.
Chapman and Campbell: Watch your child; he may well be speaking his own language. This is particularly true of a young child, who is very likely to express love to you in the language he desires most to receive.
I've seen this with my own 4 1/2 year old. Noah will come up to me or my husband, and try to engage us in a wrestling match. Or he'll pat our arms, give us a hug, etc. He has shown us that his main love language is that of Physical Touch!
2. Observe how your child expresses love to others.
If you notice your child making crafts for relatives, or wanting to take presents to classmates or teacher, this may indicate that her primary love language is Gifts.
3. Listen to what your child requests most often.
If your child often asks you questions like "How do I look, Mommy?", "What do you think of my drawing?", or "Did you think I did well at practice today?", this pattern may indicate that his love language is Words of Affirmation.
4. Notice what your child most frequently complains about.
Frequent complaints such as "You never have time for me", "Why don't you play games with me?", or "We never do things together" would be indicative of the need for Quality Time.
5. Give your child a choice between two options.
Chapman and Campbell suggests to lead your child to make choices between two love language. For example, a Dad might say to his son, "I have some free time Saturday. Would you like me to fix your bike, or would you rather go to the park together and shoot some hoops?". The choice is between Acts of Service and Quality Time. A mother may say, "I have some time tonight. Would you like to go shopping, and I'll help you pick out a new outfit, or would you rather stay home and we'll do a puzzle together?" You've given her the choice between Gifts and Quality Time.
Chapman and Campbell explain: As you give options for several weeks, keep a record of your child's choices. If most of them tend to cluster around one of the five love languages, you have likely discovered which one makes your child feel most loved. At times, your child will not want either option, and will suggest something else. You should keep a record of those requests also, since they may give you clues.
Of course, the choices you offer your child will depend on age and interest.
I highly recommend this book for understanding your child's own unique love languages, and how you can better fill his or her "love tank"!
