Branded (Fall of Angels) Review

First and foremost, this is one impressive book. Was enthralled by the book description alone. The storyline of this book is unlike anything else that I have read. Keary Taylor creates an unique and terrifying image of Angels that will intrigue all readers. The emotional rollercoaster that plays throughout this novel is one of a kind. Talent is evident in the ability to portray intense emotion without making the story seem cheesy or unrealistic. I am impressed by the ability of this young author, and can not wait to see what she has in store for the future. I enjoyed the ending leaving the plot base open, so that it is possible for a sequel or maybe even a series. With characters so intense readers will immediately appreciate to open ending in hopes for more. This is definitely a must read for PNR lovers. Lastly, I like to wrap up with a note about the cover. Very attractive! Not really a mystery because you want to find out what the scars mean from the start, but this is definitely a eye catcher.

Call Me Joe Review

Poul Anderson was one of the greats of the golden age of Science Fiction. "Call Me Joe" is a short story published in the late 1950's in one of the popular science fiction magazines of the time, where I first read it (I think it was Astounding, but I'm not sure). The basic premise is a scientific mission to Jupiter creates a life form that can survive on the Jovian "surface", remote controlled from a moon station. The controlling scientist is a handicapped man who feels the power of the whole, vibrant creature that he controls. Is this beginning to sound familiar? Did James Cameron read this story and let it percolate for 60 years?
As always, Poul Anderson's prose is a joy to read, and the ending, while not a complete surprise, is very satisfying. Read it to see where "Avatar" came from. And for the pleasure of tasting the Master's work.

Call Me Joe Overview

A classic Campbell-edited novelette from the Fifties, with the original cover and all four interior drawings by Kelly Freas. “Call Me Joe" is Poul Anderson at his best, with the planetary science working neatly in the background to support a gripping human story.

The Postmortal: A Novel Review

This is the second novel from Drew Magary, he has created a fantastic new world that starts in 2019 with a brilliant idea. A scientist accidentally finds the cure for ageing - not death but ageing - eat your heart out L'oreal. This does not stop you dieing, you can still get sick. Get cancer and be killed.
Our hero is John Farrell who keeps a journal and text files on his WEPS 8 (a sort of advanced iPad) which is found years later by the Bureau of Containment and it still works! His story and that of the world, is told through his entries and news blogs and other media sources from the time period, which spans sixty years.
What starts out as a brilliant almost humanitarian venture, for instance this is a cure to all ageing diseases, such as Alzheimer's; soon becomes a bit dystopian. If no-one ages then no-one dies, people become post mortals with two ages, like sixty five with a rebirth age of twenty seven. The moral arguments were not fully researched before the universal clamour for access to `the cure', meant it was legalised by all governments. This then leads to a whole slew of problems, with population explosions, new cults to the Church of Man, `organics', who want to grow old and die naturally. What happens to pensions? What happens to healthcare? When do you stop having kids as you will continue to be fertile?
So masses to deal with and Magary does not flinch from the story developing. In actual fact just as you think you have got your head around the latest plot twist, he throws a new development into the mix. As the characters and particularly John Farrell get older (but not visibly) the Worlds' finite resources start to groan under the pressure and ever more inventive ways of holding together the gossamer fabric of society have to be introduced. That is where the End Specialists come in. In a world where no one ages and very few die, there has to be a way to press the exit button. This means having Government sponsored (and paid) Specialists who help you shuffle off your mortal coil.
The morals and principles of John develop with the story and pragmatism wins out over most considerations, for most of the time. However, this is also a tale of love, loss, bereavement, new ways of coping and concepts that we have never thought of let alone considered. There is a feel of John Wyndham about this, in that it does not just deal with the sci-fi element but uses the prose to drive the characters and events, in a way that makes you want to know more and actually engages you with the whole thing.
Magary has done a marvellous job and I just wanted to plough on until I had read it all. He keeps the pace, the surprises and the interest going at full tilt, right up until the last sentence. Seriously, this is just a fantastic read and I think I have gushed too much, but can not recommend this highly enough - just brilliant.

Up Jumped the Devil (Darryl Billups Mystery) Review

Darryl Billups, Baltimore Maryland Police Reporter, has to deal with office politics, personal relationships, and the evils of race hate and domestic terrorism. Walker has an excellent ear for conversations, and an excellent eye for real life situations. There is little need for suspension of disbelief, so well structured is the plot and the characterizations. A nice blend of public and private, suspense and romance.

I read the description of this book and it sounded kind of interesting. The united States has a demon locked up in a big glass cage and we are trying to figure out what he really is and wants. To honest I just wanted something lightweight and fun. I didn't expect much but I really ended up really loving this book. It had in interesting premise and was written well. There are moments of fun romantic comedy to moments of horror. There are discussions of religion and faith and science versus faith. I just can't say enough. I don't want to ruin everything so I won't go too much into the plot. But I loved Bub the demon and all the people involved with him. All I could think the whole time was it would make a great movie. Really, a fast paced beach read. I was even a little sad when I reached the end. I wasn't ready to let it all go.

UR Review

Stephen King has graced us kindle owners with a bit of surprise. Coming out a few weeks early, UR downloaded to my Kindle this morning and 90 minutes later I had devoured its 1737 locations.
UR settles into a space somewhere between a short story and a novella. The premise is simple but fascinating. After a mild mannered college professor orders a Kindle, he is met with a pink Kindle that downloads books not only from Amazon.com, but from Urs. Each of the more than 10 million Urs seem to represent a different reality where authors have written different books. Ever wanted to read the unpublished Hemingway book, or six Poe novels? King explores the possibilities and in the process makes every literary mind jealous.
Of course, being King, things start to go wrong and become disturbing when the professor finds out that the pink Kindle can also download newspapers from different Urs. I'll let you discover the rest on your own.
Ur moves quick and features some cameo appearances by past King characters that will leave the most cynical CR smiling. It falls short of five stars simply because it is measured against other great King novellas and novels, but UR is a great diversion for any King fan.

More than two years is a long time to wait for a new novel by Michael Prescott. While Final Sins, his last book, was not quite up to the standards to which I hold him accountable, his newest, Riptide, certainly is. This is one meticulously researched book and I felt like I was in on the original Jack the Ripper investigation. I do not want to give away any of the suprises that Mr Prescott has in store for you. Suffice to say the novel is a book that steadily gains momentum up to the time when that final satisfying page is turned. All of the Michael Prescott novels have been well written and suspenseful. If you can find any of them, by all means snap them up. Just as gratifying are the six novels he wrote under the pen name of Brian Harper. Make Michael Prescott a name you look for. Hopefully, all of his books (even the Brian Harper titles) will be made available on Kindle soon! Well done, once again, Mr. Prescott.

Mile 81 (Kindle Single) Review

You'll probably hear this a lot in the coming days and throughout what's bound to be a long list of reviews, but I'm going to say it anyway because it's the truest thing I can think to say: MILE 81 is classic Stephen King.
With only a few exceptions, most of King's more recent work (everything since NEEDFUL THINGS really) has been more mysterious, paranormal, or suspenseful than horrific. There's nothing wrong with that, of course, and I've enjoyed most of what King's written from CARRIE all the way through FULL DARK, NO STARS, but MILE 81 is a welcome return to a purer kind of horror for those readers who fell in love with King back in the CUJO, CHRISTINE, and IT days. I'll save the plot rehashing for other reviewers, but I will say that I think this novella is what King might have written if he'd gotten the idea for FROM A BUICK 8 25 years earlier.
It's a fantastic story. One of my favorite King stories of all time. And maybe that's all I really needed to say. If you're debating whether or not to buy this, stop. Go click that 1-Click button as fast as your fingers can move.
**Note: Although the novella earns a solid 5 stars from me (I'd give it ten if I could), the formatting could have used some more attention. There are missing section breaks, and the dedication--which should have been on a page of its own--comes immediately after the last line of the story. Somebody needs a slap on the wrist for that one. Or a kick in the teeth.
Also, MILE 81 ends at the 80% mark. What you get after that is a long excerpt from 11/22/63. That's just a heads-up for readers who like to know how close they are to the end of a story.
I'm not taking anything off my rating for those things, but I thought some of you might like to know.

Mile 81 (Kindle Single) Overview

At Mile 81 on the Maine Turnpike is a boarded up rest stop on a highway in Maine. It's a place where high school kids drink and get into the kind of trouble high school kids have always gotten into. It's the place where Pete Simmons goes when his older brother, who's supposed to be looking out for him, heads off to the gravel pit to play "paratroopers over the side." Pete, armed only with the magnifying glass he got for his tenth birthday, finds a discarded bottle of vodka in the boarded up burger shack and drinks enough to pass out. Not much later, a mud-covered station wagon (which is strange because there hadn't been any rain in New England for over a week) veers into the Mile 81 rest area, ignoring the sign that says "closed, no services." The driver's door opens but nobody gets out. Doug Clayton, an insurance man from Bangor, is driving his Prius to a conference in Portland. On the backseat are his briefcase and suitcase and in the passenger bucket is a King James Bible, what Doug calls "the ultimate insurance manual," but it isn't going to save Doug when he decides to be the Good Samaritan and help the guy in the broken down wagon. He pulls up behind it, puts on his four-ways, and then notices that the wagon has no plates. Ten minutes later, Julianne Vernon, pulling a horse trailer, spots the Prius and the wagon, and pulls over. Julianne finds Doug Clayton's cracked cell phone near the wagon door - and gets too close herself. By the time Pete Simmons wakes up from his vodka nap, there are a half a dozen cars at the Mile 81 rest stop. Two kids - Rachel and Blake Lussier - and one horse named Deedee are the only living left. Unless you maybe count the wagon.

OK, so that paragraph was obviously tongue in cheek, but hopefully in conveys some sense of what Brooks' remarkable "The Zombie Survival Guide" is like. While obviously a parody of both the horror genre and civil defense/survivalist manuals, it maintains an "all-business" demeanor, never once cracking the façade to reveal the underlying humoristic intent. The result is a book that is, when taken as a whole, a funny, incredibly thorough work of satire. However, at the same time, page-by-page, it is a rather accomplished addition to zombie horror.
Starting with zombie physiology and then moving on to weapons, tactics, long-term strategy and history Brooks has produced a manual which has a thoroughness that belies the absurdity of its subject. Point by point he discusses the pros and cons of rifles, machetes and flamethrowers, then considers the optimal defensive positions for various types of outbreaks. After an extensive discussion of survival in a zombie doomsday scenario, he lays out zombie outbreaks through history, and what their implications are. Throughout, entries are extensively cross-referenced and alternative courses of action are always weighed for potential risks and benefits.
The remarkable thing about all this is that Brooks has managed to infuse a tension, and urgency into his manual that makes for great reading. Part post-apocalyptic fiction, part "Night of the Living Dead" and part "Saturday Night Live" sketch, this is a book that should hold appeal across a broad range of genres. Thorough without being dry, creepy without being clichéd, and funny without relying on cheap laughs, "The Zombie Survival Guide" is undoubtedly one of the most original books I have ever read, and one that I enjoyed reading immensely. If you appreciate any or all of these genres, or if you just enjoy a well executed, original idea, this is definitely a book you'll want to check out.

Wheat Belly is absolutely fantastic and I recommend it to anyone who will listen.
The book starts with sort of a history of wheat; how wheat is part of the fabric of all human cultures. The first couple chapters move a little slowly, but are written so well that even the most mundane facts and figures kept my interest. History of wheat, some talk about how wheat has evolved since the wheat of the Old Testament, and how it is not really wheat at all today.
In the United States, the acreage wheat occupies is larger than the state of Ohio (go Buckeyes!) and the amount of space wheat takes up on the globe is larger than the area of western Europe. It has a permament place in our lives - so it seems. But is today's wheat really something we should be putting in our ovens? On our tables? In our bodies?
Wheat has not actually gone through any evolution over time, but it has gone through some rigorous genetic alterations. The amber waves of grain, growing on stalks topping four feet high, represent only 1% of the world's wheat production - rare to say the least. The wheat we see in the bread and cereal ailses grows a mere 18 inches, allowing not only for a second crop each year, but contains insecticides and fungicides right in the seed heads. Genetic engineering allowed for inclusioin of these things without so much as a single test for nutrition, safety or consistency.
Gluten, the fatty protien in wheat (and numerous other grains) is produced many times the amount in old-school wheat. Gluten fosters very stubborn belly fat, hence the term "wheat belly".
After the history and culture lesson, Dr. Davis goes on to tell us not only why wheat is so bad for us, but what we can do about it; alternatives and resolves. Everyone should read this book. I'm sold on Wheat Belly and I'm off wheat for good!

The Walking Dead Volume 13 Review

When I heard that AMC was going to produce a television series based on the zombie epic "The Walking Dead," I was both concerned and delighted. A bona fide classic in undead lore, "The Walking Dead" graphic novels are brutal and surprising--not really what I would picture for a basic cable TV show. The first season ran with 6 episodes, and the ratings were stellar for AMC (a network know for terrific and prestigious shows like "Mad Men" and "Breaking Bad"). With Frank Darabont of "Shawshank Redemption" fame as the creative force behind the show and Robert Kirkman's (the comic's creator) involvement as a writer, we have a winner gearing up for a second season--so check it out if you haven't already!
But picking up with the graphic novels, Kirkman hits us with "Volume 13: Too Far Gone." Now, I had heard some initial disappointment about this volume--and for those looking for general mayhem and violence, this is certainly one of the more subdued chapters thus far. I have to say that initially I agreed. With Rick and clan installed in a new community, there are dozens of new characters sharing center stage. I found this off-putting at first. But what happens in "Too Far Gone" is far more important than just another attack. Rick's growth and character development are a highlight and how he, and the others, start to acclimatize to their new surroundings has surprising emotional resonance. The characters face the crossroads where they're allowed to start feeling human again and start to face the moral repercussions of the things they've done and will have to continue to do in order to survive. I ended up really feeling connected with "Too Far Gone" in a surprising way. If you're open to seeing "The Walking Dead" as a fully rounded epic, these moments of introspection are entirely crucial! I couldn't put this book down. From the beginning I thought, what a different, interesting and creative heroine Norm has created in Kim Bennett. She's not Nancy Drew and we are glad of it. The characters, in all their seediness, become real and you find yourself pulling for someone you normally might not. The descriptions of the San Francisco area are excellent and colorful. The ending has an excellent twist and you wish there were more chapters to read. I can't wait for Kim's next adventure.

I'd been thinking the last volume of The Walking Dead were starting to get a little boring. I just plowed through this one and found myself shocked, amazed, and shouting out expletives more than a few times... and again, a cliff-hanger ending...
This is freaking great stuff... the only drawback is waiting another 6 months to find out what happens. Sure, I could get the single issue comics, but I like the trade paperback too much.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

The Boys from Brazil Review

Normally, I like reviews that give a short outline of the plot of a book or movie, because without that, you don't know whether you'd like to spend the time. However, unless you're really wavering, I would strongly advise that you to read the book before looking at the reviews below -- Ira Levin is THE MASTER of suspense -- like Stephen King says, his plots work like intricate timepieces -- and for maximum enjoyment you should know as little as possible about the book before you start.
Odds are, however, that you already know it's about cloning and Nazis, so I'll go ahead and say this: I put off reading the book for years because I wasn't interested in either of those subjects. But "The Boys" is not what you'd expect at all, and superlatives can't describe Levin's skill. "Couldn't put it down" doesn't touch it.
Plus, any gore or references to sex and violence are only what is necessary for the sake of the plot, which is important as far as I'm concerned.
And, just like with his other books, this is more than just a roller coaster ride that you walk off of and forget. There's satisfying poetic justice, interesting moral contrast, and important ethical questions raised -- not just the usual pronouncements about weren't-the-Nazis-terrible or isn't-cloning-awfully-dangerous, either. It's one of those books you love to discuss with a friend.

Day by Day Armageddon: Beyond Exile (Book 2) Review

Day by Day Armageddon was one of the first books I read when I became interested in zombie literature, to go hand in hand with my fascination with zombie movies, almost exactly four years ago. As is the case with many people who enjoyed its personal approach to the apocalypse as told by an active officer in the military, I have waited all this time for the long hoped for sequel. Since J.L. Bourne is himself an active member of the military, my guess is that he was only able to write bits and pieces of this update of the saga between active tours of duty. While it may have been frustration for us fans of the first book to have waited this long, I have to say that the wait was well worth it.
An issue that some people had with the first book was perhaps the intentional diary approach to the book, with typos left in and even the text a bit rougher than you would get from a traditional novel. That is no longer an issue, as the format of this book is more traditional, with no errors in the text, intentional or not. I myself had no issues with that previously, but with it gone, it is one less point of criticism that someone may have with this type of storytelling. We once again get a diary of a military officer facing down the zombie apocalypse and this one picks up where the last journal ended, under ground, in the nuclear missile silo the author has dubbed Hotel 23, shortly after an attack by hostile survivors that failed to penetrate its defenses.
This is once again a personal journey of one man, with other people entering and exiting the story at different intervals. The characters in the first novel that are with the main character in Hotel 23 remain, but do not play a pivotal role here. The story has more dramatic swings to it than the previous tale, where it was mainly one man gathering who he could with him to find any place they could to survive. In this story, the military is reintroduced and play a huge role in the goings on of this tale. This allows the story to progress beyond what could have amounted to a group of people just trying to hide out underground for the duration of the apocalypse. Instead, the main character is required to make tough decisions and take on new responsibilities that will lead him away from H23 for the bulk of this tale and once again make this a intriguing saga of one man's path, out in the open, during the zombie apocalypse.
My favorite character, and one which I am gathering much more will be revealed about in a future journal, is Saien, who our main character meets during his desperate travels and appears to be equally as capable (if not more so) than the main character at surviving in zed infested territory. His background is perhaps not completely shrouded in mystery, but it is clear there is more to the man than what the diary indicates. Suffice it to say, he is an interesting addition to the characters in the book, and the only one that shared a great deal of pages with the main character.
While there is a bit of romance afoot for our hero, it is certainly not a significant part of this journal. Personal interactions like that are kept to a minimum, with some character commentary that reveals bits and pieces, but the action is what the author targets, as is natural in a journal format such as this. While there is a great deal of military terminology, the author goes to significant lengths to make the layman, like me, feel comfortable with the equipment and hardware being used in the story. This is not a story about an every day guy beating the odds and surviving, but about someone who has gone through survival training, has a great familiarity with weaponry, hand to hand combat, and battle tactics most of us are not privy to, which makes this book fairly unique among most zombie stories written.
I personally enjoyed the gritty, personal perspective that this book and the previous novel have. A journal format does have its weaknesses: minimal dialogue, limited perspective, and by necessity, we know that the person who is penning the journal is okay because they continue to write about their exploits day after day. But done well, it is a compelling format, and it is hard to say that anyone out there does it any better than J.L. Bourne.

Awesome awesome book! Just what I've come to expect from Scott Nicholson.
I have this habit of trying to picture different scenarios in my head as I'm reading to see where an author is going with the storyline. Then I get my aha! I thought that was going to happen somewhere down the road.
I had no idea where Scott was going when I started this and I couldn't figure it out until I read it when I got to that point in the story. I hope Scott takes this as a complement when I say this book was so strange, but a great strange. I knew there was something going on with the food because Roby was fixated with food, but I never would have guessed what actually was behind the food. This was one of those, keep turning the page (or clicking the next button on my Kindle), don't put it down until you're done type of books.
This book starts out at the sitting for Jacob Ridgehorn and continues on through the viewing and the funeral. All of it revolving around Roby and the food and his thoughts on proper funeral procedure, which was actually kind of interesting. Tell me you haven't done it? Been in a somber situation, not able to believe the behavior of some who are there? He does give them leeway in his mind because they are grieving.
He sits through the bickering and manages to get everyone to eat the pie. What's in the pie? I can't tell you. You will never ever think of it yourself though.
I said this in my review of The Red Church, but I'll say it again. Scott Nicholson reminds me of some of the greats, Stephen King, Dean R Koontz, etc. This reminded me of some of Stephen King's shorter story. Not in the writing style, because that is all Scott's wonderful style, but in the suspense category. His stories are full of so much detail, you can easily picture it in your head, you can smell the food, see the congealed grease around the ham, the marshmallows on the sweet potato pie (I'm never eating pie at a funeral again, thank you very much Scott. :) ) This is just another great read from Scott Nicholson.
