Loved (Book #2 in the Vampire Journals) Review

I couldn't put this fantastic, fabulous book down. Every word kept me spellbound. I was breathless all the way through. The writing is amazing, the characters are fascinating, the situation is as good as it gets. Another masterpiece from Morgan Rice!

Loved (Book #2 in the Vampire Journals) Overview

In LOVED (Book #2 in the Vampire Journals), Caitlin and Caleb embark together on their quest to find the one object that can stop the imminent vampire and human war: the lost sword. An object of vampire lore, there is grave doubt over whether it even exists. If there is any hope of finding it, they must first trace Caitlin's ancestry. Is she really the One? Their search begins with finding Caitlin's father. Who was he? Why did he abandon her? As the search broadens, they are shocked by what they discover about who she really is.But they are not the only ones searching for the legendary sword. The Blacktide Coven wants it, too, and they are close on Caitlin and Caleb's trail. Worse, Caitlin's little brother, Sam, remains obsessed with finding his Dad. But Sam soon finds himself in way over his head, smack in the middle of a vampire war. Will he jeopardize their search?Caitlin and Caleb's journey takes them on a whirlwind of historic locations-from the Hudson Valley, to Salem, to the heart of historic Boston-the very spot where witches were once hung on the hill of Boston Common. Why are these locations so important to the vampire race? And what do they have to do with Caitlin's ancestry, and with who she's becoming? But they may not even make it. Caitlin and Caleb's love for each other is blossoming. And their forbidden romance may just destroy everything they've set out to achieve'.Although LOVED is the sequel to TURNED, it also stands alone as a self-contained novel. LOVED is 51,000 words.{Book #3 in the series--BETRAYED--is now also available, at 60,000 words, Book #4 in the series--DESTINED--is now also available, at 63,000 words, and Book #5 in the series--DESIRED--is now also available, at 70,000 words.} “LOVED, the second book in the Vampire Journals series, is just as great as the first book, TURNED, and jam packed with action, romance, adventure, and suspense. This book is a wonderful addition to this series and will have you wanting more from Morgan Rice. If you loved the first book, get your hands on this one and fall in love all over again. This book can be read as the sequel, but Rice writes it in a way that you do not need to know the first book in order to read this wonderful installment."--Vampirebooksite.com“THE VAMPIRE JOURNALS series has had a great plot, and LOVED especially was the kind of book you will have trouble putting down at night. The ending was a cliffhanger that was so spectacular that you will immediately want to buy the next book, just to see what happens. As you can see, this book was a huge step up in the series and receives a solid A."--The Dallas Examiner“In LOVED, Morgan Rice proves herself again to be an extremely talented storyteller'.What was most enjoyable about LOVED is the history. When you get actual historical connections written in a book, you have a tendency to become much more fascinated in what happens to the characters. I feel LOVED would appeal to a wide range of audiences, including younger fans of the vampire/fantasy genre. The romance is PG-13, with no inappropriate love scenes that would have parents worried. LOVED is much deeper than the first installment. It develops and explains the characters in more detail, which helps the reader understand them better. The story moved along well, and ended with an unexpected cliffhanger that leaves you shocked. Engaging and fun, I found myself enjoying this book much more than the first and I am highly anticipating the next installment."--The Romance Reviews

Turned (Book #1 in the Vampire Journals) Review

TWILIGHT and INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE were my favorite vampire books. Now my new favorite is TURNED. It is scary, romantic, and original all in one. It is a fast and tense read. The author just pulls you in. After the first page I was hooked and could not put it down. I can't say enough good things about this book.

Turned (Book #1 in the Vampire Journals) Overview

In TURNED (Book #1 of the Vampire Journals series), 18 year old Caitlin Paine finds herself uprooted from her nice suburb and forced to attend a dangerous New York City high school when her Mom moves again. The one ray of light in her new surroundings is Jonah, a new classmate who takes an instant liking to her.But before their romance can blossom, Caitlin suddenly finds herself changing. She is overcome by a superhuman strength, a sensitivity to light, a desire to feed--by feelings she does not understand. She seeks answers to what's happening to her, and her cravings lead her to the wrong place at the wrong time. Her eyes are opened to a hidden world, right beneath her feet, thriving underground in New York City. She finds herself caught between two dangerous covens, right in the middle of a vampire war.It is at this moment that Caitlin meets Caleb, a mysterious and powerful vampire who rescues her from the dark forces. He needs her to help lead him to the legendary lost artifact. And she needs him for answers, and for protection. Together, they will need to answer one crucial question: who was her real father? But Caitlin finds herself caught between two men as something else arises between them: a forbidden love. A love between the races that will risk both of their lives, and will force them to decide whether to risk it all for each other'"TURNED is an ideal story for young readers. Bloodlines Review

Sydney has been on thin ice ever since helping Rose with her problems. Working with a dhampire is tantamount to treason to the Alchemists so they don't trust her anymore. She can't afford to screw up her latest assignment for more reasons than she can count. She's to go into hiding with the Dragomir princess Jill, aka jailbait. Jill's life is at risk as she is the key to overthrowing her sister's throne. Eddie and Adrian accompany them, making for one heck of a rag tag team. Sydney will have to keep her wits about her as danger will not only come from assassins but from places they least expect. To make matters worse, her own career is in doubt due to her questionable interactions with them. However, staying detached from the rest of them please her supervisors, will prove to be the least of her worries in the end as much more is at stake then she ever realized.
I'll admit I was a little skeptical at how much I would really enjoy Bloodlines due to the perspective change. I love Rose, and just figured anyone else would pale in comparison. However, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed Sydney's perspective. There is so much more to her than we saw on the surface in the Vampire Academy series. She is incredibly strong, yet unlike Rose she doesn't go charging into problems like a bull to hit them head on. Her methods are a little more underhanded and subtle, yet no less effective in the end. I find her aversion to Abe a little amusing as they are quite similar in the long run. The most intriguing thing about Sydney's character would have to be the constant war she is at with herself. She wants to stick to the strict rules and upbringing her Alchemy beliefs taught her, especially the unnaturalness of magic and that anything vampiric is evil. However, things keep coming along to challenge that perspective, and well, she isn't quite sure what to do about that. She has a very long way to go, but I think the more she throws off the Alchemist's single mindedness, the closer she will come to her true potential.
Ahh, Adrian. He was another character that caught me off guard. I'll be honest that I hadn't seem him as much more than a troubled man who served as a roadblock to Rose and Dmitri's relationship. I knew he cared for her and that she was his crutch, but I never really guessed at how deep his feelings truly went. In Bloodlines, we get a glimpse into just how much he was left reeling at the pain of losing her. He is an absolute train wreck, even more of a mess than he ever was, yet he is still trying to keep it together. It is that holding on that shows his potential, and I think now that his "crutch" has been removed, he may have a chance at healing for good. I do think Sydney will be playing a large role in that recovery, because unless I was imaging things, I have a feeling there was something really growing between the two of them. That will be one heck of a shake up as Moroi and Humans are forbidden from being together. Add in the fact that she is an Alchemist of all things, it takes the forbidden love idea to a whole new level. Only time will tell how all that plays out. It should definitely prove to be interesting.
Full of suspense, danger, drama, and even a little forbidden love thrown in, Bloodlines was everything I have come to expect from a Richelle Mead novel. This book will satisfy even the worst cravings that Vampire Academy fans have had since the final installment. Of course, that satisfaction is only for a short time, as it wouldn't be one of Richelle's books without an ending that leaves you reeling and desperate for more. While Bloodlines had one of the more mild cliffhanger endings compared to others, I still cannot wait until The Golden Lily is released to see what happens next. Several things were placed into play and I can only imagine where those twists will lead. A round of applause to Richelle Mead for pulling off yet another fantastic start to a great new series.

A Modern Witch (A Modern Witch Series: Book 1) Review

Debora Geary just keeps growing as a story teller.
Yes, there are witches but this is a story about love, luck, and family. The smooth blending of technology and witchcraft works so well, I was looking for the spellcode in my own machine before the book was over.
The cast of characters from Lauren - reluctant witch and ace real estate broker - to Jamie and Nat to the herd of kids and witchlings stole my heart and made me smile.
If you like your contemporary fantasy with just a touch of magic, an off center love story, and gorgeously developed characters, you should grab a sample of this one faster than you can say "So mote it be."

A Modern Witch (A Modern Witch Series: Book 1) Overview

Can you live 28 years without discovering you're a witch?Lauren is downtown Chicago's youngest elite realtor. She's also a witch. She must be - the fetching spell for Witches' Chat isn't supposed to make mistakes. So says the woman who coded the spell, at least. The tall, dark, and handsome guy sent to assess her is a witch too (and no, that doesn't end the way you might think). What he finds in Lauren will change lives, mess with a perfectly good career, and require lots of ice cream therapy.A Modern Witch is a full length novel, 81,000 words or about 300 pages. Light contemporary fantasy with a good dose of humor, a little romance, and characters you won't want to leave.

The Vampire's Curse, A Paranormal Romance (Undead in Brown County #2) Review

All I can say is when does the third book come out? I want it now lol. It is a good story and I want to know what happens next. The only down sides I see are some grammatical errors through the book but who cares you can figure out what she meant. And when I got to the last page I thought something was wrong with my phone (I use it as an e-reader) the book ended to just a blank page. Usually it will give info on what to look for with the next title or something and the ending was so open I was wondering if I had actually finished it. However none of that would bother me if I wasn't just dying to read the next book.

The Vampire's Curse, A Paranormal Romance (Undead in Brown County #2) Overview

**Big thank you to all the new readers! I love you guys.**The tingling, mesmerizing heat blazed even hotter in my veins as I watched him stroll towards me. There was a blatant elegance in the careless way he moved, from the slight swing of his arms to the fluid action in his long legs. He leaned over me, his eyes cold and calculating, his cool breath swirled over my cheeks like a freezing winter mist.“You're not afraid?"I could not move. He was holding me prisoner without chains, without bars of any kind. He held me with the steady, penetrating focus of a hunter who will not be denied his prey. My fingers itched to touch him, to trail over his skin in slow gliding strokes. But he could not have me. No one could really have me.Sarah Wood, after witnessing a battle between several powerful vampires on her land, is left stunned and feeling immensely guilty for having given permission for her friend, Alex, to be turned into a vampire rather than allowing him to die from his injuries. And though she tried hard to keep her sister, Katie from knowing about the whole vampire situation at their family's Inn in the wooded hills of southern Indiana, Katie became the victim of a kidnapping herself.Sarah is left to face the return of her mother, who had abandoned the girls when they were children. She'll need every ounce of her bad attitude and quick temper to deal with the new surprises coming her way, including an illness that could very well leave the entire responsibility of the Inn and the vampires to fall onto the shoulders of her younger sister. The paperback version of the book is 216 pages long. The manuscript in MS Word is over 35,000 words. This ebook contains sexual scenes, language that some might find offensive, and one scene involving alcohol consumption. Parental guidance is suggested.

Shattered (Dream Realms Trilogy, #1) Review

This book had both its high points and its low points. I loved the concept of the dream world and am sad that we didn't get to see more than a tiny glimpse of this intriguing place. I liked the style of writing and the length of the book.
However, from the vampires to the elders to the gray Volvo, this book screams Twilight knockoff. I also rolled my eyes when Laura ran off with Logan without a second thought, even though she barely knew him.
Overall, I enjoyed parts of this book. I just wish that the characters were given more depth and that the plot was more original. It did not leave me screaming for a sequel, unfortunately.

Chasing Amanda Review

In "Chasing Amanda" Melissa Foster guides us in helping Molly; wife, mother to a teenage son, search for a missing girl. The young girl has disappeared from their quiet, rural community; a place where things like this simply don't happen. For Molly, it's deja vu. Several years earlier, while living in Philadelphia, she witnessed a similar event. She did nothing at that time, and has been tormented by her inaction ever since.
Molly's special gift, or curse, is her clairvoyance. She can sometimes 'see' things that others cannot. In Philadelphia, she failed the little girl, whose body was found shortly after. Now, she promised herself that she would not make that mistake again. Molly persists, using her clairvoyance and sheer stubbornness in an effort to find the child. In doing so, Molly exposes her town's shameful secrets, presenting a conclusion to this story, that I never saw coming!
Melissa Foster's skill with her characters, drew me into the story immediately. The suspense that followed made this book a definite page-turner!

Chasing Amanda Overview

Nine years ago, Molly Tanner witnessed a young girl's abduction in the busy city of Philadelphia, shifting her occasional clairvoyance into overdrive. Two days later, the girl's body was found, and Molly's life fell apart. Consumed by guilt for not acting upon her visions, and on the brink of losing her family, Molly escaped the torturous reminders in the city, fleeing to the safety of the close-knit rural community of Boyds, Maryland. Molly's life is back on track, her son has begun college, and she and her husband have finally rekindled their relationship. Their fresh start is shattered when a seven-year-old girl disappears from a local park near Molly's home. Unable to turn her back on another child and troubled by memories of the past, Molly sets out to find her, jeopardizing the marriage she'd fought so hard to hold together. While unearthing clues and struggling to decipher her visions, Molly discovers another side of Boyds, where the residents--and the land itself--hold potentially lethal secrets, and exposes another side of her husband, one that threatens to tear them apart.

Hellbourne Review

HellBourne series is not exactly a romance but more a discovery journey. It's the story of Lucifer "Luc" Hellbourne, half-fae half-devil, who is trying to find his place in the human and otherworldly world. After 20 years spent as Alpha male's lover of a werewolf pack, Luc is on the loose; his werewolf lover dumped him to marry a woman and have kids, a thing that even Luc, with all his special power, can't have. Wandering alone after so many years living in a pack is disconcerning and when Luc sees a night club called the River Styx, he feels a bit at home, and enters the club and a new stage in his life.
Obviously the Master Vampire of the club, Nikko, is all of the idea to make Luc his own personal thrall, and Luc, at first, is not against the idea: Nikko is a very good piece of a man, not exactly the emaciated vampire of legends. He is a stud, and Luc is not against the idea to have a rebound lover like him. Nikko is thinking to have found his personal pet, and in his magnanimity, to give protection to Luc, but he doesn't know that Luc has no need of his protection, Luc stays and goes when he wants and how he likes.
At the same moment Luc is in a three-way: his former lover Bran wants him back, his actual lover Nikko doesn't want to let him go and there is a new young vampire with the face of an angel, Jerrod, who needs his help, and how can a demon not being drawn by an angel?
Hellbourne is a continuing series, I have the feeling that also the following novella in the series will be centered around Luc and his search for a new home, and probably his real mate. The quality of the story is way better than the first attempts by this same author, she always plays with stereotype (the Alpha Male werewolf, the Master Vampire), but this time they are all elements mixed in a slightly more original way. Not that the previous short stories weren't good, but I feel like this new novella being more mature and complete.

Hellbourne Overview

Even when your father is the devil, love can be a scary thing.Luc Hellbourne is crushed when his werewolf lover dumps him for a female. Feeling unwanted he gives himself to the first guy who asks, Master Vampire Nikkolai Remondi. Except Nikkolai decides to keep Luc and when his ex-lover wants him back, all hell breaks loose. Which is easy when you're the devil's son.

Finding Forgiveness Review

Briefly, Ben and Dave are supposed to be mates. However, despite efforts on Dave's part Ben has stayed away and they have never consummated their relationship. Ben has made assumptions about Dave that are unfounded which end up having consequences. Dave on the other hand has decided he is done waiting for Ben and intends to go find a new partner to assuage his misery. Ben comes to his senses because the big misunderstanding is clarified with the threat of being kicked out of the pack. Ben goes to Disney to find Dave, he apologizes, wears a shirt, them have sex. They go home and everyone is okay and makes jokes at the end.
It was a cute story and I would probably have been fine with it except for the fact that I expect more from the author and the price. This book was so short, and the last 20% of it was made up of samples from other Samhain books including the same book. For the subject material and the price I expected more. Also, if you have not read the other books in the Halle series, you would not know which way to turn or how this world or relationships works. So it's not a story that is complete in and of itself.
The actual story is 1356/1688 locations. So it's pretty darn short. I have read the other books involving this world in the past and liked them. However, there was barely an inkling that these two were meant to be together. So when I heard theirs was the next book, I was curious to see how it evolved. Honestly, they deserved more time because I had a really hard time accepting years of mistrust and recriminations being cleared out over a week of sex, mating bond or not. To me, the issues in terms of old trauma from an alcoholic parent and migraines (presumably secondary to another misunderstanding) are not the kinds of things you work out in a few weeks. Essentially, the story overall strained my disbelief, especially the miraculous disappearance of the severe hospitalizing migraines after the official mating. I get the feeling the author was trying to say that they occurred because of the unfulfilled bond and misunderstandings but I couldn't sustain that. I could really see the blackmail behavior potential, oh if you aren't nice to me, I will have another migraine. In essence I have a hard time believing that at the end of the day these two would really be able to stay together and be happy, bond or no.

Finding Forgiveness Overview

To forgive is divine'if he can pin his lover down long enough to beg for it. Poconos Pack, Book 1Ben Malone's role as Marshall attunes him to every nuance of the pack's wellbeing-which means he's forced to feel every one of his mate's hangovers. It's the one reason Ben will never claim Dave Maldonado. Being alone is better than being with someone who lives in a bottle. Dave was destined to be a pack Alpha until his first migraine hit at age fifteen, the day he caught his future mate holding hands with another boy. In the nine agonizing years since, he's contented himself as Beta, but never learned to live with the pain and confusion of Ben's rejection. Dave's worst attack yet sends him to the hospital-and brings them both face to face with the misunderstanding that's kept them apart all these years. It's too late, though. Dave is headed for Gay Pride Week at Disney World with one goal in mind. Forget Ben Malone. Ben's got a problem with that. Only one man is destined to hold his David. And he'll give anything, even his last shred of pride, to win forgiveness-and the right to finally claim his mate. Warning: This book contains explicit sex, graphic language, and male/male love scenes between two top dogs. Who knew Rock Paper Scissors could be such fun?

Fallen Eden (Eden Trilogy, Book Two) Review

I usually don't take the time to review books, BUT, with this one, I feel like I HAVE to...
I happened to pick up the first book by chance. I was waiting on a different book. I finished reading Eternal Eden in 1 day!!! (Yes, I LOVE to read!) I was anxious for Fallen Eden to come out. The minute it did, I bought it, downloaded, and read it in (again), 1 day!!!
The book picks up right where the first one finished off. It is a well written book. I thoroughly enjoyed it. There were a couple of times where I felt "Butterflies" in my stomach... I cannot wait for the 3rd book "United Eden" to be released. It feels like November is such a long time to wait, worth it, but long!
With this being said, I hope that you enjoy the book as much as I did... Take a chance and read and see how much you'll be pleased!!!

The Boys from Brazil Review

Normally, I like reviews that give a short outline of the plot of a book or movie, because without that, you don't know whether you'd like to spend the time. However, unless you're really wavering, I would strongly advise that you to read the book before looking at the reviews below -- Ira Levin is THE MASTER of suspense -- like Stephen King says, his plots work like intricate timepieces -- and for maximum enjoyment you should know as little as possible about the book before you start.
Odds are, however, that you already know it's about cloning and Nazis, so I'll go ahead and say this: I put off reading the book for years because I wasn't interested in either of those subjects. But "The Boys" is not what you'd expect at all, and superlatives can't describe Levin's skill. "Couldn't put it down" doesn't touch it.
Plus, any gore or references to sex and violence are only what is necessary for the sake of the plot, which is important as far as I'm concerned.
And, just like with his other books, this is more than just a roller coaster ride that you walk off of and forget. There's satisfying poetic justice, interesting moral contrast, and important ethical questions raised -- not just the usual pronouncements about weren't-the-Nazis-terrible or isn't-cloning-awfully-dangerous, either. It's one of those books you love to discuss with a friend.

The Boys from Brazil Overview

The classic thriller of Dr. Josef Mengele's nightmarish plot to restorethe Third Reich.
Alive and hiding in South America, the fiendish Nazi Dr. JosefMengele gathers a group of former colleagues for a horrifyingproject—the creation of the Fourth Reich. Barry Kohler, a younginvestigative journalist, gets wind of the project and informsfamed Nazi hunter Ezra Lieberman, but before he can relay theevidence, Kohler is killed. Thus Ira Levin opens one of the strangest and most masterful novels of his career. Why has Mengele marked a number ofharmless aging men for murder? What is the hidden link thatbinds them? What interest can they possibly hold for their killers:six former SS men dispatched from South America by the mostwanted Nazi still alive, the notorious "Angel of Death"? Oneman alone must answer these questions and stop the killings—Lieberman, himself aging and thought by some to be losing hisgrip on reality. At the heart of The Boys from Brazil lies a frightening contemporary nightmare, chilling and all too possible.--This text refers to the Paperback edition.

The Red Church Review

...when I started to read Scott's book on my Kindle. I should have known better. This is not the genre I typically read. But since he had a recommendation from another author I recently discovered (J.A. Konrath) and he has really impressed me on the discussion boards here on Amazon, I thought I would give it a go. Good decision; bad timing!
Lights aglow (cause I am a scaredy-cat), I hunkered into my fluffy featherbed, covered with my warm comforter, listening to the wind howl and the rain dance across the tin roof, 'The Red Church' grabbed my attention and didn't let go! As the storm raged on, the hours flew by, and I was completely entranced.
And then, almost at the end, when the action in the book was reaching a new high...a large bang outside and my power went out!!
I kid you not! Convinced evil forces were now in play (vs just blaming the storm outside), I carefully hid my Kindle under the pillow next to me, closed my eyes so tight, and faded off to a fitful sleep.
By morning, the sun was shining and I was able to finish the book without further incident.
I highly recommend this book and will look for more by Scott. And next time, I will have a flashlight handy. :)

The Red Church Overview

A boy and a sheriff must solve the mystery of a haunted Appalachian church when a strange preacher returns to town. Stoker Award finalist.THE RED CHURCHFor 13-year-old Ronnie Day, life is full of problems: Mom and Dad have separated, his brother Tim is a constant pest, Melanie Ward either loves him or hates him, and Jesus Christ won't stay in his heart. Plus he has to walk past the red church every day, where the Bell Monster hides with its wings and claws and livers for eyes. But the biggest problem is that Archer McFall is the new preacher at the church, and Mom wants Ronnie to attend midnight services with her.Sheriff Frank Littlefield hates the red church for a different reason. His little brother died in a freak accident at the church twenty years ago, and now Frank is starting to see his brother's ghost. And the ghost keeps demanding, "Free me." People are dying in Whispering Pines, and the murders coincide with McFall's return. The Days, the Littlefields, and the McFalls are descendants of the original families that settled the rural Appalachian community. Those old families share a secret of betrayal and guilt, and McFall wants his congregation to prove its faith. Because he believes he is the Second Son of God, and that the cleansing of sin must be done in blood."Sacrifice is the currency of God," McFall preaches, and unless Frank and Ronnie stop him, everybody pays.-------My spiritual thriller "The Red Church" explores a boy's struggle with faith when his mother attends a haunted church. Inspired by real-life legends in the Southern Appalachian Mountains where I live, the novel mirrors my own search for faith, love, and deeper mysteries. I hope you'll try the next Littlefield novel DRUMMER BOY, and my other books, including LIQUID FEAR and SPEED DATING WITH THE DEAD. I invite you to contact me at Amazon Central or www.hauntedcomputer.com. Thanks for sharing the journey.----------------------"Scott Nicholson is the kind of writer who always thrills and always entertains." --Jonathan Maberry, Patient Zero"Scott Nicholson understands that the best horror novels achieve primal fear through a combination of sustained atmosphere, richly drawn characters, and believable if uncanny evils that draw unholy power from everyday lives. The Red Church is a damn scary story well told." --Christopher Ransom, author of the international bestseller, The Birthing House "A master of atmospheric suspense." --Eric Wilson, NY Times bestselling novelist"Scott Nicholson knows the territory. Follow him at your own risk."--Stewart O'Nan, Boston Noir"Keep both hands on your pants, because Nicholson is about to scare them off."--J.A. Konrath, Origin"A wonderful storyteller. He has entered a literary shadowland between Ray Bradbury and Neil Gaiman."--Sharyn McCrumb, The Ballad novels"Like Stephen King, he knows how to summon serious scares."--Bentley Little
