Turned (Book #1 in the Vampire Journals) Review

TWILIGHT and INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE were my favorite vampire books. Now my new favorite is TURNED. It is scary, romantic, and original all in one. It is a fast and tense read. The author just pulls you in. After the first page I was hooked and could not put it down. I can't say enough good things about this book.

Sookie Stackhouse was only interested in one vampire and that was Bill, her boyfriend. However, Bill seemed to be putting some distance between them recently. Then he disappeared to another state! His sinister and sexy boss, Eric, said that Bill had been summoned to Mississippi by Lorena. She was a lady vampire Bill had lived with for some time before. That was enough for Sookie. She was on the way to Mississippi.
Alcide Herveaux was to be Sookie's contact/guide. He was a werewolf. With his help, Sookie could enter places that mere mortals seldom dared tread, such as Club Dead. The vampire king of Mississippi (yes, readers, you read that correctly) was Russell Edgington. Russell took interest in Sookie very quickly. Eric arrived on the scene, in disguise as usual. Several attempts were made on Sookie's life and Bill was caught in an act of serious betrayal against Sookie's love. Sookie was not sure whether to save Bill or sharpen a few stakes of her own!
***** Much better than book two. Again, this mystery could be read as a "stand alone" book. But the main and secondary characters remain the same. The love triangle between Sookie, Bill, and Eric gets much rougher. That triangle is enjoyed more by those who have read the first two previous books though.
This entire series, thus far, is humorous, fun, very sexy, and highly recommended! *****

Dead Until Dark: A Sookie Stackhouse Novel Review

sorry, that was bad! I am a big Charlaine Harris fan and only mildly interested in vampires. But the combination of a an uncontrollably mind-reading heroine, newly legal vampires, a serial killer, a shape-shifter -- how could I resist? I find I don't want to say much at all about the plot, as it's too easy to give away some really exciting twists. It's fair to say that the story postulates vampires as a newly-emerged legal minority (word is they've been victimized by superstition, when really the poor people have been subjected to a terrible virus) with attendant vampire-philics and phobics roiling the waters of cultural change. Vampires can now subsist on artificial blood, so they don't have to be a danger to anyone. Harris has thought through vampire culture and the interaction of that culture with "normal" society to great effect -- the book would be fun to read just for that .
I have to admit, though, that nothing about the vampires interested me as much as the main character, Sookie. If you think you want to be able to know what other people are thinking, the limitations of Sookie's life will make you think again. She's brave, brilliant and decent and watching her (and her sex life) develop is a true joy.
Meanwhile, the book is tightly and extravagantly plotted and the psychological effects are fascinating and disturbing, absolutely gripping. Read it over a weekend or on vacation so you won't have to put it down -- you'll just have to know what happens next!
Harris has set this up to continue as a series, and if she can continue this level of quality, people will be lining up for each new book.

Great next installment in the Vampire for Hire series. The author keeps developing the storyline around Sam's family, as well as with her friends (werewolf, fang, etc). Although this book seemed short, and left me wanting to see where Sam goes with Werewolf Boy...it was well written, and I'm definitely pre-ordering the next one!
I am definitely frustrated with the ending!! I don't think I can wait until next April to find out Fang's identity....I've got a few guesses though...

Succubus Blues Review

Honestly, when "Succubus Blues" arrived on my review stack, I was worried. It looked good, but it also raised a few warning flags; this could, I thought, be another lascivious sex romp disguised as urban fantasy/horror, proving little more than an excuse to have demons and other supernatural creatures get naked and sweaty with lustful mortals.
I was pleasantly surprised, however, to find relatively little graphic sex -- apart from a few torrid scenes here and there, and one opening encounter that will bring joy and hope to basement-dwelling ubergeeks everywhere. "Succubus Blues" is a very good novel, featuring (obviously) an "alluring, shape-shifting demon who seduces and pleasures mortal men." In exchange for their souls, of course, but Georginia Kincaid apparently makes that little trade quite worthwhile in her Seattle stomping grounds.
Georgina's life is troubled, because she can get all the sex she wants but love and romance are largely denied her. Carnal acts -- even really good kisses -- steal life force away, and while Georgina is immortal, it doesn't serve well to deplete and kill the men she loves. So she leads an emotionally vacant life, supplementing her nocturnal duties with a more mundane job as an assistant bookstore manager, hanging out when time allows with a couple of vampire pals, a demon or two and even the occasional angel. Technically, succubi are evil, but Georgina doesn't get too involved with the politics of her job.
But then someone starts killing the people around her, and Georgina finds bigger issues to deal with than romance. Is it an amateur vampire slayer, inspired by the exploits of a popular TV heroine, or is something more sinister at work? And what's a poor succubus to do when the doors of both Heaven and Hell close on her cries for assistance?
Figures that Georgina would suddenly find, not one, but two romantic possibilities in her life.
"Succubus Blues" is a damn fine first book, and Mead can be proud to make such a bold stride into the market. Her protagonist is sexy, appealing, smart and resourceful, but amped-up sensuality isn't much use against the thing stalking the streets of Seattle.
The book is hardly action-packed; Mead moves the story along slowly, spending more time on characters than plot, so adrenaline junkies may be bored. That's a shame, because the characters are extremely well-developed, and the action she provides is certainly worth the wait. Sexaholics may want to avoid this one, too; the sex in this book is mostly of the "tease and titillate" variety, not the graphic stuff you'd expect if Georgina's cleavage-baring dress on the cover was cut just a little lower. The denouement, while not too hard to spot well in advance, is still grist for one good read with plenty left over for a sequel.

Blood Work: An Original Hollows Graphic Novel Review

Blood Work is an interesting jump into grown-up picture books. Some comic books are enjoyable, but this one is far from doing Kim Harrison's writing abilities justice. From my own standpoint as an artist, I can understand the intrigue in telling your story visually, but as an avid reader, too much of what makes a Kim Harrison book so great was sacrificed for the end product.
On the book as a Graphic Novel: A good book allows the written word to transform into our own, personal world within our imaginations, filled with our own ideas - like adding a texture to the book and its characters unique to us alone. The concept explains our disappointment when "our" Kisten doesn't look a thing like the young man in the book (I think he mows my lawn). It is also what a comic book takes away from the reader. The power to create something magical from the written word is gone because the illustrations try to do the work that your imagination is supposed to be doing.
I would definitely NOT recommend this title to anyone who has never read a Harrison novel. Her writing ability is too sizable to be confined to speech bubbles and a reader might never get to know how talented Harrison truly is at weaving a tale.
For those who have read her Hollows novels? It doesn't really add anything to the series, so I am sure there will be a plethora of used copies available soon...

The Throne of Fire (The Kane Chronicles, Book Two) Review

First off, let me say that this is no Percy Jackson, in case you're going into this with vaulted expectations. However, these books do have their place, but the pacing is slower, the back stories a bit more longwinded (particularly in the first book in this series), yet the characters in both Percy and Pyramid are equally well drawn. Go figure. If you haven't read the first book, don't worry, the author does a decent job of catching you up on important details and plot points that lead to this book.
This time around, the book opens with a bit of action, as the kids, along with their new "special recruits" sneak into a museum and try to steal an artifact. This is typical, as a first book in any series tends to start off slow or include a lot of exposition and foreshadowing. Since we more or less know the characters in this book, the action plays out on a grander scale without sacrificing character development. There is another world-at-stake scenario in this book, via the chaos snake Apophis, who is a major threat to the Kane family, and he is planning to conquer the world once he is freed from his prison. But of course there is a plan to stop him. While not exactly a rehash of the events that involved the defeat of Set from the first book, you can tell that these books are in the same series, and take place in the same Red Pyramid world.
We get a lot of action and adventure in this book and loads of Egyptian myth that is presented in a fun way. But for my money, the book lacked a certain something. For one thing, it is drawn out in spots, and I'm a believer in tighter more streamlined storytelling. Another book series I started reading recently, which involves ancient temples and a thrilling artifact hunt, actually tells a rather compelling, tightly woven story. It also involves characters with unique abilities. Check it out here: The Crisis Artifact (The Crisis Trilogy) So while The Red Pyramid series can stand a bit of tightening up and trimming in spots, there are currently less well known epic series on the market that are begging to be read!

Harry Potter Paperback Box Set (Books 1-7) Review

I, like many other people, used to dislike Harry Potter. I had never actually read the books, but for some reason looked down on Potter fans, thinking them to be a bit off color. I was certain that the whole thing was highly overrated and that it had been blown way out of proportion (like Twilight).
I could not have been more wrong. I finally read the books at the continuous urging of a friend in my junior year of high school, and they have become my favorite books of all time. I have already reread all seven books and stood in line for hours to see the midnight premiere of the newest movie.
When is the last time you have read a book and instantly wanted to pick it up and read it again? It doesn't happen often.
I can't even begin to tell you how incredible these books are. Not only are they very entertaining, but they are filled with the important themes of good vs. evil, the power of love, and the value of good choices. The characters in this book have become part of my life.
If you are at all hesitant to read this series because of its classification as a 'fantasy' series, I can assure you that you will not be disappointed. Yes, the book is about wizards and magic, but you would be shocked at how quickly the story pulls you in.
I can only ask you to PLEASE read the first book. If you like it, keep reading. If you don't, keep reading. The books get better as they progress, and I feel that the final chapters of the last book are some of the best reading I have ever done.
Also, do not judge these books from the movies. Everybody knows that the book is always better than the movie, and it's the same case here. The movies are great, but you need to read the books to fully appreciate what's happening and become a true Potter fan.

Ghost Town (Morganville Vampires, Book 9) Review

Every time I think Rachel Caine has written herself into a corner and can't possibly think of new ways to torture Claire and her friends, she proves me wrong. GHOST TOWN doesn't try to top the previous books by bringing in bigger and badder outside threats (really, what could be worse than Bishop?), instead she does something much scarier: she makes Claire watch helplessly as humans and vampires alike forget...everything.
At this point in the series I have certain expectations from a Morganville book: smart and snarky dialog, sweet romance, and helpless fury over the unjust treatment of humans. GHOST TOWN delivers all that and more. In a way, it's like a tabula rasa, a blank slate. We get to see Myrnin at the height of his insanity, Amelie as the formidable Founder she once was, and best/worst of all we see Shane forget and fall for Claire all over again.
Most series fizzle out long before reaching nine books. And fewer still reach that number with any kind of momentum. The Morganville Vampire series has twelve books planned so far and shows no sign of slowing down. I'll go so far as to say this series gets better with every book. KISS OF DEATH and GHOST TOWN being the best yet. I really hope that everything works out for the TV adaptation. The Morganville Vampire series already reads like it was made for television. Until then, I'll have to bear the wait like everyone else for the next book, BITE CLUB, due out in April 2011.

The lines between adult and YA become a bit blurred in the Casts' latest installment to the House of Night series. Things get quite steamy for a few of the characters early on, and I suppose it helps to fill the void that such an over extended series needs. This edition mostly consists of tying up loose ends and conclusions from previous books, and finally introducing some new threads to close this series out. Because of this I find the story difficult to summarize, but I'll try.
Neferet is up to her nefarious games again conning the counsel, and deceiving all of vampire kind. But her black tendrils of darkness have pissed off the wrong immortal. Kalona is not a happy camper. Zoey is as ever unevolving if not less mature than in previous books avoiding her responsibilities for as long as the Casts' can afford to keep her from going home, which is most of the book. Her and Stark are strengthening their bond as warrior and high priestess as well as boyfriend and girlfriend. Just for fun and as if there wasn't enough magic and folklore in the book the Casts' introduce a fey element into the mix. I'm sure a magical kitchen sink is soon to follow. Death brings Zoey around and devastates her click. By the end Stevie Rae and Rephaim will be outed, Neferet will be down but not for long, repercussions of Stark's resurrection will start to surface, and the lines between light and dark will be drawn. Choices will be made. And yes after seven books the ground work for the end is finally being laid.
Nine books in this series was stretching it. Twelve is becoming unfocused and scattered. Five or six well planned four to six hundred paged books would have been enough to do this story and it's characters justice. Now by the eighth book it seems to me that the original outline for the overall storyline and individual books has gotten wildly out of control. I think the plan went out the window and the story's being made up as it goes along. The great idea of the vampire tattoos, religion a sort of mixture of Wicca and Native American rituals and mythology is getting lost and convoluted by the addition of the nuns, and darkness, and the bulls, and the fey or old magic, the other world, Kalona. My head hurts with all the elements I have to keep up with in this series. I am disappointed that this great original series wants to become more like a teen Trueblood, with multiple story lines, a rich diverse world, but it's not working, it's too much and I wish Cast would simplify and focus everything. The amount of filler in the last few books is taking a once enjoyable series and turning it into a novelty. The writing seems to be getting worse. I think I would rather hear some one curse than have to hear them say bull poopie constantly. In print it's not so bad, but hearing it on the audio book is quite annoying. I don't think Mark Twain's idea of write how you would speak applies when your imagining what's the worst possible representation of how young people talk. I do understand what the Casts' are trying to do, they just don't do it very well. I don't think you should talk down to a younger audience, in fact I think you should take every opportunity to display good writing.
If your a fan of the characters other than Zoe and Stevie Rae, you will be as disappointed as I was, since their banter was minimal in this installment. We do hear a little about Zoey's long lost family and mom who hasn't really been featured in quite some time. I was not impressed with all the pop culture references and author shout outs. Instead of relating to the audience it seemed to dumb down the story. While I love Glee and agree with the hotness of a certain Trueblood Werewolve, it took away from the originality of HON. Like when tragedy strikes our close knit circle of friends, an unfortunate opportunity to connect with the reader is missed. I admit I cried when Dobby died in Deathly Hollows, and most likely when Sirius met his end as well, because they were written simply and worded beautifully. I found a death framed in the concept of a glee episode and certain Wicked song kind of corny and less than what the character deserved.
Overall I am a bit confused with this book. The authors seem as bored with Zoey's character as I am. She's not developing at all. There is a distinctive shift toward Stevie Rae and her possible role taking down Neferet and Darkness. Her green glow hints at the old magic introduced early in the book. Someone should write a lexicon to keep track of everything, all the different cultures and mythology are becoming too complicated. Though I applaud Stevie Rae's growth her storyline mirrors Zoey's almost exactly. With her having secrets, not trusting her friends to understand, while she's trying to save her friend (Rephaim) or lover (like Stark) from darkness, and a relationship with someone she's not suppose to be with and whom she imprints with. If you feel as I do, that the books end in a strange place Awakened is no different. Because none of the books have that classic story arch with a climax and conclusion you don't get that resolve. Since they aren't really separate stories within a larger plot, more like a long continuous narrative chopped up at a joint in the story.
If you like the other books, well then you'll love this one as well. It's more of (sadly) what we've come to expect from the HON. If your like me and are hoping it will get better, it's not. I would like to see things to the end, but I'm not sure I will feel the same in November. Awakened was as equally entertaining as it was annoying. Once you pick past all the filler and fluff the plot points were decent. Unfortunately you have to wade through all the bad poetry, and dialogue to get to it. The whole book revolved mostly around death. Ironic for a series that just won't end.
