Shattered (Dream Realms Trilogy, #1) Review

This book had both its high points and its low points. I loved the concept of the dream world and am sad that we didn't get to see more than a tiny glimpse of this intriguing place. I liked the style of writing and the length of the book.
However, from the vampires to the elders to the gray Volvo, this book screams Twilight knockoff. I also rolled my eyes when Laura ran off with Logan without a second thought, even though she barely knew him.
Overall, I enjoyed parts of this book. I just wish that the characters were given more depth and that the plot was more original. It did not leave me screaming for a sequel, unfortunately.

The Love You Crave (A Donovan Creed Novel) Review

This is book EIGHT in the CREED SERIES. I noticed some negative reviews on some of his earlier books, luckily I read the the first books in the series and didn't start with number 5, 6, or 7, (START AT THE BEGINNING PEOPLE). I made the mistake of reading "Lethal Experiment" first, but enjoyed it so much I went looking for more. It's much better if you read them in order: (1.) Lethal People (2.) Lethal Experiment (3.) Saving Rachel (4.) Now & Then (5.) Wish List (6.) A Girl Like You
(7.) Vegas Moon (8.) The Love You Crave.
I love his books, and yet never heard of him until I received my Kindle at Christmas. His books are (LAUGH OUT LOUD) funny, even in public, which I have many times since I started reading them and that's a head turner believe me. If you need to be lifted his books are fantastic to make you forget all the problems in your life. I read occasional pages to my husband and he even laughs, which is soooo rare.
For the money his books are a most entertaining purchase, as I've paid much more for a lot less.

Second Son (Kindle Single) Review

I don't know what the word count on this one is, but I'd guess it falls into novelette territory, which is probably the perfect length for the story.
If you're hoping for some kind of formative, coming-of-age event in Reacher's past, you might be disappointed. What readers get here is a young Reacher who is already about as calculating and decisive as he'll ever be. Still, if they take it for what it is (a new Reacher story that just happens to take place 37 years ago), I think fans of the series will enjoy this one. I know I did.

Kill Me If You Can Review

A pivotal event in this novel reminded me of a device that I have seen used in movies. One of the actors, at a critical juncture, turns to the viewers and elaborates. I haven't seen this very much, and I've never seen it done well. Similarly, a character in this book, at about the half-way point, explains that readers have been purposely misled about an important plot element. I found it all rather confusing.
It's the story of a young ex-Marine who finds a bag full of diamonds, worth several million dollars. He decides to keep the diamonds, and a blood-soaked series of events ensues.
Author James Patterson (writing here with Marshall Karp) is a master craftsman of the page-turner. I have read and reviewed fourteen of his works for this site and never had trouble finishing them, even those I did not rate highly. It seems to me that Patterson's fail-safe method is to juggle three or more intriguing elements at the same time. At least one of them will keep most readers engaged.
There are some flaws here. Too much time is spent on international tourist hot spots in Paris, Venice, Amsterdam, and Nassau. These travelogues do not really keep the story moving. Also, some of the villains are almost comically over the top and stretch credulity.
The book weaves two taboos into the plot. A college professor has an affair with one of her students. The other taboo is far more scandalous. Many readers will find it shocking...
There's nothing profound here. But there are stretches of high excitement, and I did keep wondering what would happen to those diamonds and the man who took them.
