Where Men Win Glory: The Odyssey of Pat Tillman Review

This book is not a `war story'. It is a rendering of a man who was far more complex than the one-dimensional hero who was portrayed in the media and who, through no fault of his own, was basically used as propaganda by the US government. Interestingly, that was one of the threads woven throughout the book, along with the use of Jessica Lynch as a tool to boost support of the war.
Krakauer does a great job in the beginning of the book by contrasting the carefree life of an American boy growing up in the suburbs vs. groups of boys being groomed by the Taliban to become terrorists. His description of Pat Tillman's early life gives insight into how he came to make the decisions that ultimately resulted in his joining the Army.
Some of the detail in the middle of the book got a bit cumbersome. However, it was a useful primer on some of the things that went terribly wrong in Iraq in Afghanistan during Tillman's time there, and I'm not certain that Krakauer could have told the rest of the story without the level of detail provided.
Nonetheless, the author provides a refreshingly honest look at a man who at times I found rather unlikeable, frankly. Without question however, the picture of Tillman that emerges is one of a man who cannot be categorized easily. His complexity was well illuminated in the book, which was a far more honest and respectful portrayal of his life than if he were simply portrayed as the `good' character in a morality play.

This book does not paint a rosy, cozy picture of the US government's actions, of the wars in Iraq in Afghanistan, or, it must be said, of Pat Tillman himself. But that served to make both the book and the man more interesting.

Through My Eyes Review

Reading this with my daughter has been a gift I'll treasure forever. I hadn't expected a young man to have much wisdom to share just being so young (and he addresses that nicely), but I have found more than just the story enjoyable - the book has been a great conversation piece for me with my 10 year old daughter. I am grateful Tebow created this story for family and friends to share together. What a gift!
Example - the chapter about Tim's mom's pregnancy impressed me with the delicacy and dignity he (with Nathan Whitaker) uses to offer the story. Here, I had expected a more evangelical Tebow (which I would have been fine with), but it never got "preachy" - just inspiring and touching the heart deeply.
Generally, to me, Tebow seems to present his faith as HIS and absolutely the only right answer FOR HIM. He doesn't express his faith as the only truth for everyone, but rather uses his platform to explain how valuable it has been to him personally. I didn't get the feeling that he was holding himself up as the gold standard whatsoever (again, I might have been just fine with that, because he does seem to be a fine modern example of a young man dealing with fame and faith beautifully, and, besides, I couldn't be offended because I happen to agree with him in this respect).
I am thrilled his story has been genuine, heartfelt and inspiring. And he hasn't really even lived but a small portion of his lifetime yet - so I can't wait for the sequel! :)
I hope that one leads to the greatest heights of his hopefully legendary career. More importantly, a legendary LIFE :)
UPDATE: BOOK SIGNING, TATTERED COVER, DENVER 06-04-11 > What a class act this man is! Took my daughter and my neice to have their books signed. They both feel so blessed that they got to shake his hand as he looked sincerely into their eyes and told them it was HIS honor to meet THEM! OMG - to see a child's heart touched (and eyes tear) from hearing such an inspiring remark from someone who is larger than life to them both. He treated them as if they were the only people there for that moment.
My neice leaves in 6 days to work at orphanages in Africa for 3 weeks and was overjoyed that I gave her Through My Eyes to read on her trip. She's going to LOVE having this book with her - in her hands and in her heart as she works in Africa! GB2 to Mr. Tebow!

Through My Eyes Overview

Over the course of the last five years, Tim Tebow established himself as one of the greatest quarterbacks in the history of college football and a top prospect in the NFL. During that time he amassed an unparalleled resume-winning two BCS national championships, becoming the first sophomore in NCAA history to win the Heisman trophy, and in the face of massive public scrutiny, being drafted in the first round of the NFL draft by the Denver Broncos.

Now, in Through My Eyes, Tebow brings readers everywhere an inspirational memoir about life as he chose to live it, revealing how his faith and family values, combined with his relentless will to succeed, have molded him into the person that he is today. As the son of Christian missionaries, Tebow has a unique story to tell-from the circumstances of his birth, to his home-schooled roots, to his record-setting collegiate football career with the Florida Gators and everything else that took place in between.

At every step, Tebow's life has defied convention and expectation. While aspects of his life have been well-documented, the stories have always been filtered through the opinions and words of others. Through My Eyes is his passionate, firsthand, never-before-told account of how it all really happened.

The Wise Man's Fear: The Kingkiller Chronicle: Day Two Review

I really liked 'Name of the Wind' (like, I guess, most people reviewing this book so soon after publication).
Is this as good? No. Rothfuss is a fine writer so this is still pretty damn readable, and it's even more epic and sprawling than the first so you can disappear into his world for even longer. But it's nowhere near as tight as the first novel. 'Name of the Wind' felt meticulously planned, with every incidental little detail part of the wider story. In "Wise Man's Fear" there's a LOT of detail, a huge chunk of which seems meaningless.
Early in the book the main character constructs an elaborate device which protects him from arrows and crossbow bolts. We learn exactly how this works in great detail - and then never hear about it again. We meet a mysterious librarian, who then vanishes from the book. Later a malevolent Arcanist attempts to assassinate a powerful noble, is foiled and then disappears until the end of the book when we're told he's been killed by someone else. We never find out why he tried to murder the noble. The book is filled with odd little dead ends: the hero decides to flee from a school where he's held semi-prisoner, organises his escape, explains various complicated details of his plan and then decides not to escape.
What makes this even more frustrating are the parts of the story that scream for more detail. The hero meets the most dangerous, evil creature in all of existence - he randomly stumbles upon it while out for a walk - and the book implies that this is the most significant event in his entire life. That gets about two pages. Just for comparison, searching through the woods for some bandits gets about two hundred pages.
Like I said, Rothfuss is a good writer. So the hundred-page digressions are entertaining and fun to read - but it is basically just a shaggy dog story, which is disappointing since "Name of the Wind" delivered so much more.

Dead in the Family: A Sookie Stackhouse Novel Review

Was DITF a good read? Yes. Is it my favorite book of the series? No.
I think after reading Dead and Gone I expected a lot more to come out of DITF. I thought that I would see more of Bill and Sookie working on their relationship. Be that as friends or more. I expected a great deal about Sookie and Eric. I thought that Alcide would play more of a role especially after Tray. I even thought Quinn might show back up. While we got some answers about Eric and Sookie several more were brought to the surface. Bill and Alcide were just glazed over essentially and Quinn was never mentioned. This booked seemed unfinished almost as if it were a stepping stone to the next book.
Several plot lines were introduced bought not resolved. This book could have been magnificent but it wasn't.
The problem I have with this book is that I can't sit here and tell you what BIG thing happened. Several little things were brought about, but no big climax. The story flowed nicely but if felt like it was just a normal Sookie day sitting out in the sun waiting for something bad to happen. While I appreciate that Sookie needs time to recover the story lacked momentum.
As a reader I feel that I've waited a year and I didn't get the fix I needed. It's almost as if my book was missing 200 or so pages. The story I received was nice but I keep looking for the next part.

The Sookie Stackhouse Companion Review

Like most fans I have read every Sookie Stackhouse novel and short story, and religiously watch True Blood every Sunday. I kept my own list on the order of the novels and short stories, and had lots of questions on how Charlaine Harris created the Sookie Universe and its characters. This book answered all my questions and then some.
First and foremost, I want to give a special shout out to Beverly Battillo and Victoria Koski who both appear to have provided a lot of information to make this companion a keeper.
Here is a quick rundown of what is in the book based on the Kindle version:
1) A map of Bon Temps (which is microscopic in the Kindle version.)
2) A four chapter short story called Small Town Wedding by Charlaine Harris
3) Life in Bon Temps by Victoria Koski - great timeline and recap of all the books (this is a really fun read)
4) Sookie Short Stories and Related Material - Charlaine Harris explains how and why she created the short stories, etc.
5) Vampires, Two Natured and Fairies Oh My! - Charlaine Harris as Sookie discusses all the creatures she has met and there is a Sookie Stackhouse Family Tree (microscopic on Kindle)
6) Sookie Stackhouse Trivia created by Beverly Battillo and Victoria Koski (another fun read)
7) What's Cooking in Bon Temps - lots of yummy recipes from the books
8) Inside True Blood - Alan Ball is brutally honest as he answers questions about the differences between the books and the show, and his love for all things Bill and Sookie on True Blood
9) Mystery to Mayham - All the works of Charlaine Harris are listed - I thought this should have been placed last since it includes all her other works
10) Recollections around the Duckpond - Fans of Charlaine Harris and their experiences are discussed
11) Charlaine Harris Interview - the author answers questions from fans
12) World of Sookie Stackhouse - by Victoria Koski is an excellent guide to every character and term used in the books. Sort of like a Sookie Universe encyclopedia
My only quibbles are that the illustrations (maps, family tree, etc.) are microscopic on a Kindle and Beverly Battillo and Victoria Koski should have been listed as contributing editors/authors.
Other than that, Sookie Stackhouse novel fans will find this book a wonderful edition to their library.

Retribution (Dark-Hunter) Review

Any fan of Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter books, can tell you that this is a series that requires you to pay attention. Sure, on the surface, each book is a romance featuring a different couple with some preternatural connection. But from the very beginning, these books have had an ongoing story playing out in the background. First it was just the battle between the Dark-Hunters and the Daimons; Greek mythology played a big part. Then we had some Atlantean lore thrown in the mix. Beyond Acheron's book, demons began to play a bigger role and by the time we got to Bad Moon Rising we had a new subplot that Kenyon is calling the Hellchasers, featuring Thorn and his bad-boy gang. I made a real effort to try to connect to that because I thought that's where the series was going next. I was wrong.
Sundown's story is, in some ways, a throwback to the old books. It features characters we haven't seen much of in a long time. Characters like Sundown, himself... Zarek, Sin, Sasha, and Talon. But in other ways, it's dramatically different. Kenyon put almost everything she's been building on pause for this one to introduce an entirely new Pantheon of Native American gods and mythology. There are Dark Hunters and Daimons in the books, but at times I felt like it was unrecognizable from the books preceding it. Ash is just a mention (other than a "bonus scene" at the end.) Artemis & Nick each have a cameo. No Savitar. No Stryker, Jaden or Jared. It just felt disconnected.
That's not to say it was bad. It wasn't. The romance features Sundown and Abigail. It begins with the heroine trying to kill the hero because she thinks he murdered her parents. After their deaths, she was raised by Apollites. When she was grown, they gave her demon blood to make her strong enough to kill Dark Hunters. In her quest to get to Sundown, she kills someone important in the Native American pantheon, which sets the stage for an apocalypse. As the book progresses, she must overcome her misconceptions about Sundown and work with him to try to avert the disaster she has set in motion. And they fall for each other in the process. Kenyon is at her best when she does romance. And while this relationship isn't my favorite of hers, I did enjoy it.
It seems Kenyon plans to continue with the Native American storyline in the next book. It will feature Dark Hunter Ren, who was a major player in this story. I don't know how I feel about that. The bonus scene at the end, featuring Ash & Tory really brought home for me how much I missed the New Orleans gang and the mythology I know. But I have no doubt I'll be there next year, to follow where Kenyon leads. It's never a dull ride. 4 stars.

The Evil Inside (Krewe of Hunters) Review

This was actually a pretty creepy read! It's a total whodunit though and a mass-market paperback thriller. If you don't like that type of thing, then don't bother reading, BUT I actually really enjoy most of Heather Graham's books because I enjoy her settings. She often writes about New Orleans and the Florida Keys. This time the setting was Salem, Massachusetts during the Halloween season. Pretty cool. They had fortune tellers and Wiccans and people dressed up in costumes. It just created a really great atmosphere.
Let's be honest though. No one reads Heather Graham thinking they are going to read a Booker or Pulitzer prize nominee. This book was decent and fun and a whole lot cliche. But it is totally a guilty pleasure of mine. Every now and then you have to read a book like this that's not so serious and just a whole lot of fun.
The one thing I can say though was that the villain was a little hard to pick out of a line-up. There were a lot of possibilities, but none that I was totally sure of. Most of the time I take a guess and I end up being right, but not this time. That I enjoyed very much.
I liked the characters, but I didn't love them. And I have to tell you, this is the first book in this series I have read. So it's possible that I missed some of the back story and character development from the earlier books. I do plan to read them though, at some point.
The Evil Inside was a fun and fast read, and if you haven't read a Heather Graham novel before, I suggest you give one a chance if you are looking for the perfect guilty pleasure beach read. It makes a great fall read too.

Heartwishes Review

I love Jude's Books. The 1st book I read was Knight in Shining Armour and I have not stopped reading them since.
Heartwishes is the story of Gemma a young woman looking to write her diseration on something that has not been done before. When she is told about the job he goes to her professer to turn it down. But when she finds out the details she lusts for the job.
On the other side you have Colin. The sheriff of Edilean. He is a Frazier. And Fraziers dont tell anyone one much about themselves. He doesn't date anyone in town. And SEEMS to have a girlfriend Jean who everyone expects him to marry.
Gemma discovers in the Frazier family papers something called the heartwishes stone. And then anyone connected to the Frazier family starts to get their deepest desires.
Meanwhile Jean's uncle is an International jewel thief who is up to something in Edilean.
The only reason I am not giving this one the 5 stars it deserves is because of the fact hardly anything was really said on the uncle. I would have liked to see more on him.
I am eagerly awaiting to Moonlight in the Morning in December. I am REALLY hoping it is Gemma doctors friend story. His name escapes me at the moment. But he is the SWEETEST man.
Thanks Jude for ANOTHER great read.

The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt's Darkest Journey Review

Anyone who enjoyed Stephen Ambrose's Undaunted Courage or any other tale of exploration and hardship will love River of Doubt. Candice Millard's new book chronicles the expedition of Theodore Roosevelt and his Brazilian co-commander, Candido Mariano da Silva Rondon, down one of Amazon's last unexplored tributaries in 1914-the River of Doubt. The 400-mile river trip tested every ounce of the ex-president's intellect, courage, and physical stamina. Millard's book, therefore, is more a tale of survival than adventure.
Roosevelt and his American companions were woefully unprepared for their journey. They brought boats too large to be of use on a shallow river, and had to rely instead on Indian-made dugouts-canoes designed more for local transportation on flat water than long-distanced descents through rapids. The American and Brazilain members of the group often had to portage these heavy, waterlogged boats around rapids, which cost the group both time and precious food supplies.
Food proved to be one of the most vexing problems of the journey. Much of the canned food shipped from the United States was too heavy to be carried to the expedition's launching point in the Brazilian highlands, and had to be discarded. Instead, Roosevelt hoped to augment his increasingly meager rations with game shot along the way. Unfortunately, the rain forest did not offer much bounty and the group ended up eating monkeys and piranhas to survive-creatures far more difficult to kill than deer and antelope.
If that were not enough, disease plagued the expedition at every corner. Kermit, the son of President Roosevelt, fought malaria for most of the trip and Theodore almost died when he contracted a deadly bacterial infection from a small flesh wound. Author Candice Millard does an excellent job of describing the numerous hazards confronted by the group without getting too bogged down in rain forest ecology. The book's moderate length and circumscribed subject matter make it much easier to plow through than a typical biography. With that being said, some historians may be disappointed that the book does not shed much more light on Roosevelt's political philosophies or his quest to preserve public land. Was Roosevelt an early environmentalist or simply an avid hunter and adventurer? This book does not answer that question.
It does, however, show us a side of Theodore Roosevelt's character often lacking in traditional biographies of the man: his humanity. The author describes how the ex-president shared in the work, dangers, and hardships of the journey. In one scene, she shows Roosevelt washing the clothes of his companions and in another, the sick ex-president giving away his rations to one of the expedition's "more productive" Brazilian laborers. In short, readers will walk away from this book with new-found appreciation for President Roosevelt and his undaunted courage-something often lacking in today's breed of politicians.

Unlikely Friendships Review

I am an animal lover, and this book made me smile. The stories are so sweet, and the photos are beautiful. There are so many wonderful stories of unexpected animal relationships. This would be a great book as a gift, or just to have around as a pick-me-up. Loved it!

Unlikely Friendships Overview

It is exactly like Isaiah 11:6: “The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid . . . " Written by National Geographic magazine writer Jennifer Holland, Unlikely Friendships documents one heartwarming tale after another of animals who, with nothing else in common, bond in the most unexpected ways. A cat and a bird. A mare and a fawn. An elephant and a sheep. A snake and a hamster. The well-documented stories of Koko the gorilla and All Ball the kitten; and the hippo Owen and the tortoise Mzee. And almost inexplicable stories of predators befriending prey-an Indian leopard slips into a village every night to sleep with a calf. A lionness mothers a baby oryx. Ms. Holland narrates the details and arc of each story, and also offers insights into why-how the young leopard, probably motherless, sought maternal comfort with the calf, and how a baby oryx inspired the same mothering instinct in the lionness. Or, in the story of Kizzy, a nervous retired Greyhound, and Murphy, a red tabby, how cats and dogs actually understand each other's body language. With Murphy's friendship and support, Kizzy recovered from life as a racing dog and became a confident, loyal family pet.

Finding Everett Ruess: The Life and Unsolved Disappearance of a Legendary Wilderness Explorer Review

David Roberts'"Finding Everett Ruess: The Life and Unsolved Disappearance of a Legendary Wilderness Explorer" is an amazing amalgam of psychological jigsaw puzzle, wilderness travel writing and the best ever episode of the TV show "Cold Case."
The first part of this unfailingly fascinating study introduces us to Everett Ruess who, in 1931 at the age of sixteen, "started traveling by horse and burro and on foot through the canyons and plateaus" of the western USA, particularly the southwest. An aspiring artist and watercolor painter, the details of his traveling and his psyche are pieced together by diary entries as well as a steady stream of letters to his parents Christopher and Stella, his brother Waldo and a small assortment of friends and folks he met along the way. Described by famous American author Wallace Stegner as "one of those, a callow romantic, an adolescent aesthete, an atavistic wanderer of the wastelands" who "was after beauty, and he conceived beauty in pretty romantic terms."
Everett Ruess' wandering through vast expanses of the west, usually solo and very often the only white man to have been to certain natural wonders, continued on until his unexplained disappearance in 1935. At this point Mr. Roberts' book switches from a semi-biography of Everett into the story of his parents' and brother's attempts, with the help of a vast number of colorful real-life Western characters, to finding Everett himself or, at worst an explanation of his disappearance.
As a way of preserving his legacy after a variety of search and rescue missions all failed, the Ruess family from 1935 on tried to find a publisher for a collection of his writings and art. Finally in 1940 a California publisher brought out a "miscellany" titled "On Desert Trails With Everett Ruess" which, though it sold poorly, "went viral" (as we would call it today) and a Ruess cult was born, gathering momentum over the decades, including the aforementioned Wallace Stegner who devoted a chapter to Ruess is his 1942 book "Mormon Country."
This cult of personality continuing growing internationally and was further spurred on by the 1983 publication of "Everett Ruess: Vagabond for Beauty by W. L. Rusho.
Jump forward to the spring of 1992 when "a twenty-four-year-old man from suburban Washington D.C....hitchhiked to Alaska and walked into the wilderness to live off the land." His name was Chris McCandless and four months later his "emaciated remains were discovered by moose hunters near the northern boundary of Denali National Park."
Enter well known nonfiction writer John Krakauer. Assigned by Outside Magazine to write a story about the tragedy, in 1996 he subsequently expanded that story into the best selling book "Into The Wild" (ultimately converted to the screen as an Oscar nominated movie directed by Sean Penn). While researching for the expansion into a book length project, Mr. Krakauer was told by David Roberts [the author of this book] that McCandless sounded an awful lot like Everett Ruess.
Mr. Krakauer promptly went out and read the aforementioned "Everett Ruess: Vagabond for Beauty" and was so impressed by the similarity of the two that he included 11 pages about Everett in "Into The Wild," kicking the Ruess cult into orbit in the way only a huge bestseller can, paving the way for this book's existence.
But all was not over in the search for Everett Ruess. After 75 years new clues were found, new theories proposed and super-modern technologies used to try to find answers once and for all for this conundrum. The final third of "Finding Everett Ruess: The Life and Unsolved Disappearance of a Legendary Wilderness Explorer" tells the ongoing saga.
This book is fascinating with as many twists and turns as a narrow mountain trail or a good murder mystery. The writing is propulsive and I finished the 375+ pages in 3 sittings. At the risk of sounding silly, it was like reading television. Obviously from the book's title we know that the disappearance was officially unsolved but the answers are rendered pretty clearly, a welcome reward for staying with this wonderful book with a fascinating title character and a wide, colorful supporting cast.
If I had to quibble about anything, certain comments and excepts are repeated several times through the three sections of the book leaving me thinking "I remember the first two times you used that quote."
Definitely recommended.

Finding Everett Ruess: The Life and Unsolved Disappearance of a Legendary Wilderness Explorer Overview

Finding Everett Ruess by David Roberts, with a foreword by Jon Krakauer, is the definitive biography of the artist, writer, and eloquent celebrator of the wilderness whose bold solo explorations of the American West and mysterious disappearance in the Utah desert at age 20 have earned him a large and devoted cult following. More than 75 years after his vanishing, Ruess stirs the kinds of passion and speculation accorded such legendary doomed American adventurers as Into the Wild's Chris McCandless and Amelia Earhart.“I have not tired of the wilderness; rather I enjoy its beauty and the vagrant life I lead, more keenly all the time. I prefer the saddle to the street car and the star sprinkled sky to a roof, the obscure and difficult trail, leading into the unknown, to any paved highway, and the deep peace of the wild to the discontent bred by cities." So Everett Ruess wrote in his last letter to his brother. And earlier, in a valedictory poem, "Say that I starved; that I was lost and weary; That I was burned and blinded by the desert sun; Footsore, thirsty, sick with strange diseases; Lonely and wet and cold . . . but that I kept my dream!"Wandering alone with burros and pack horses through California and the Southwest for five years in the early 1930s, on voyages lasting as long as ten months, Ruess also became friends with photographers Edward Weston and Dorothea Lange, swapped prints with Ansel Adams, took part in a Hopi ceremony, learned to speak Navajo, and was among the first "outsiders" to venture deeply into what was then (and to some extent still is) largely a little-known wilderness. When he vanished without a trace in November 1934, Ruess left behind thousands of pages of journals, letters, and poems, as well as more than a hundred watercolor paintings and blockprint engravings. A Ruess mystique, initiated by his parents but soon enlarged by readers and critics who, struck by his remarkable connection to the wild, likened him to a fledgling John Muir. Today, the Ruess cult has more adherents-and more passionate ones-than at any time in the seven-plus decades since his disappearance. By now, Everett Ruess is hailed as a paragon of solo exploration, while the mystery of his death remains one of the greatest riddles in the annals of American adventure. David Roberts began probing the life and death of Everett Ruess for National Geographic Adventure magazine in 1998.Finding Everett Ruess is the result of his personal journeys into the remote areas explored by Ruess, his interviews with oldtimers who encountered the young vagabond and with Ruess's closest living relatives, and his deep immersion in Ruess's writings and artwork. It is an epic narrative of a driven and acutely perceptive young adventurer's expeditions into the wildernesses of landscape and self-discovery, as well as an absorbing investigation of the continuing mystery of his disappearance. In this definitive account of Ruess's extraordinary life and the enigma of his vanishing, David Roberts eloquently captures Ruess's tragic genius and ongoing fascination. From the Hardcover edition.

Accused (Kindle Single) Review

I devote a good deal of time to reading books on my kindle, yet this is only the second book about which I've written such a review.
This is non-fiction which reads as fiction. It speaks to cliche, "I couldn't put it down". Actually, I didn't until I was finished. You won't either. I hope I clicked the correct button and gave it 5 stars.

Accused (Kindle Single) Overview

Paul Alexander, the bestselling author of the Kindle Single Murdered, introduces us to Tommy Harris, the 14-year veteran of the Houston Police force, his fight with a man outside a bar, a death, and the ensuing homicide trial. The district attorney had boasted, "Anyone can convict a guilty person, but it takes someone really good to convict an innocent one." Did Harris apply a naked choke-hold, or did the district attorney and his forensics team set up Harris?

Northwest Angle Review

William Kent Krueger has delivered another outstanding novel with "Northwest Angle." This is a story with picturesque settings, a suspenseful plot, enjoyable characters and a message about life.
Cork O'Connor, a former county sheriff, takes his family on a vacation. When a destructive storm develops, Cork and his older daughter, Jenny, are separated from the others. Cork and Jenny end up on one of the many islands on the Lake of the Woods in Minnesota, on the U.S. Canadian border.
Jenny hears the faint whimper of a baby and discovers the body of a young woman who had been murdered. The woman showed signs of torture and Jenny assumes that he woman was the child's mother.
The story provides a good dicotomy between good and evil. Cork's sister-in-law is on the houseboat. She and her husband both have a strong faith. When a number of bad things happen to good people, these characters wonder how God would allow this to happen. Eventually there is an answer to their question.
The story is rich in American Indian history. Cork is part Ojibwe and relates to other American Indians. Cork's teenage son, Stephen, truly demonstrates his spirituality and communication ability with other American Indian characters, particularly the wise elders. Stephen had spent time with the ancient Henry Meloux, a healer, someone who understands the harmony of life and how to restore nature to restore that harmony if it is lost.
I read the story compulsively and enjoyed the characters, while wondering how they would escape from their situation. Cork's character is particularly well developed in that at the start of the story we see him as a father wanting more time with his family before they get too old and have other interests, then we see him as a person proud of his Indian heritage, finally, as a former lawman we see Cork's desire to bring criminals to justice.
The twist that the author provided toward the end, added to the intelligence of the story and the satisfaction with the conclusion.

Money to Burn: A Novel of Suspense Review

"Money to Burn" by James Grippando follows investment banker Michael Cantella, who works in the prestigious Wall Street firm Saxon Silvers and is an ambitious man until his rich life starts turning into a nightmare.
The book starts off in November 2003, with Michael going on a Saxon Silvers sponsored Caribbean cruise, along with his girlfriend Ivy Layton and his fellow investment bankers. When they board the cruise in Miami, Ivy immediately feels like she doesn't fit in with the gossipy girlfriends of Michael's work colleagues and suggests they charter a private cruise. To her surprise, Michael agrees and the love-struck pair even marry while enjoying their cruise. Shortly afterwards, Michael wakes up and Ivy has disappeared.
Fast forward May 2007, and Michael is married to his high school friend Mallory and still working at Saxon Silvers. Much to Mallory's annoyance, he secretly remains in love with Ivy, despite her disappearance.
Shortly following his thirty-fifth birthday, Michael wakes up to find out his investment portfolio has been wiped out--with his entire balance transferred to an off-shore account that he never had. As if that isn't enough, reports start circulating that Sexton Silvers is in trouble following the leak of information concerning its twenty-two billion dollars write-down of sub-prime mortgages.
At the same time, Michael starts getting accused of insider dealings and even of financially engineering Saxon Silvers ruin. The rumors are headed by TV reporter Chuck Bell, who has a ball destroying both Michael's reputation as well as the firm's, while refusing to reveal the identity of his secret informer.
Meanwhile, Michael receives a strange package that blows up in his hands and discovers that he's being spied on. Someone is out to ruin his life and destroy Saxon Silvers.
Overall, "Money to Burn" was an engaging read. I read the entire book in one day. Originally, I was drawn to this book because of its relevance to the recent Wall Street melt down. But setting non-withstanding, the book is filled with some powerful action sequences and plot twists.

Hell's Corner Review

Oliver Stone has led so many lives he lost count. For all the losses he has suffered there has been the gain in his friends and cohorts known as the Camel Club. A group of people that are as different they come together and make one large, right group. They solve crimes, take care of each other and never fail to have one another's back. But this latest case is one Stone has to handle on his own and no one including him is happy about it even though the President of the United States is asking for his help.
But before Stone can do his work for the President a bomb goes off across the street from the White House creating the scenario where conclusions are drawn, angles are worked and assumptions made. While everyone is running to the right the masterminds are veering to the left and keeping everyone off balance including all the alphabet agencies in Washington, DC. Stone is drafted back into the service of the government with the promise that all past indiscretions would be erased yet the problem for Stone is that his sins have been of such huge proportion he is not sure this is a statement based in fact. But Stone finds himself partnered with an MI6 agent who is as cunning as he is and keeps up even while running after him. The Camel Club goes from upset at being turned away to forcing its way into the investigation and from that moment on the determination to capture the criminal and figure out what is really going on grows to a proportion even Stone can't control.
But the agency he is now working for is throwing him off with smoke and mirrors, bodies are piling up, misconceptions abound and everyone becomes a suspect. Stone wants the nightmare to stop but for every decision he makes that draws a resolution to the case another one shows up to prove to him the last one was way off base and leads blow away with the wind.
Without his group Stone knows he can't solve this case but in this particular situation is the gain of apprehension worth the answer to who did the deed?
This series blows me away every time because the characters have so much depth and they are written with such clarity that you feel they just passed you on the street and said Good Morning. Stone may lead this merry band of misfits but he is not their leader he is a member of a close knit, well thought out group of people that can easily carry any book on their own and have proven that in the past. Mr. Baldacci knows how to write a great story and this one stands out in that it will scare you to realize the fiction he is proposing is probably fact and I hope there is a retired Agent Stone out there protecting us.

A Trick of the Light: A Chief Inspector Gamache Novel (Chief Inspector Gamache Novels) Review

Clara Morrow, at age 50, is far beyond the age when most artists are discovered. Yet, on the evening this novel opens, she is about to enter the prestigious Musée d'Art Contemporain in Montreal for a gala solo show of her work. Clara's nerves nearly get the best of her, but she gets through the experience and is soon able to return to her idyllic Eastern Townships home of Three Pines for a celebratory party with her Three Pines friends, and artists, gallery owners and artists' agents from Montreal.
In the "friends" category are Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Québec Sureté and his second-in-command, Jean-Guy Beauvoir. Gamache and Beavoir have become acquainted with Three Pines and its quirky residents during their investigations of several prior murders. (Penny amusingly acknowledges the incongruity of Three Pines being simultaneously a place of art, friendship and warm hospitality, and a locale with a frighteningly high murder rate, by having bookseller Myrna describe Three Pines as "a shelter[, t]hough, clearly, not a no-kill shelter.")
The celebratory mood of Clara's Three Pines party doesn't last. Early the next morning, it is brought to an abrupt end by the discovery of the murdered corpse of a woman in Clara's garden. The woman is identified as Lillian Dyson, Clara's childhood friend who cruelly betrayed her while they were in art college. Clara claims she hadn't seen or heard from Lillian in over 20 years.
Looking at means and opportunity leaves Gamache and Beauvoir with a wide field of suspects. They must focus on motive, which reveals a huge gap between the type of person Lillian is widely reported to have been 20 years earlier and how she is seen contemporarily by her new circle of acquaintance. Gamache asks, over and over: "can people change?"
The search for Lillian's true identity is the key to the mystery, because only through understanding her nature can the investigators learn how she inspired murderous hatred and in whom. In the course of the investigation, Gamache and Beauvoir also confront the horrors they still live with as survivors of a deadly attack on their team the year before. The experience has affected Gamache profoundly, but it has not shaken his fundamental belief in people. By contrast, Beauvoir thinks: "The Chief believed if you sift through evil, at the very bottom you'll find good. He believed that evil has its limits. Beauvoir didn't. He believed that if you sift through good, you'll find evil. Without borders, without brakes, without limit." Though Beauvoir's name can be translated, literally, to mean "beautiful view," his actual view of people has become increasingly dark and embittered.
Clara's new-found success and Lillian's murder also bring to a boil the problems of envy and lack of understanding that have plagued her marriage for several years. In fact, envy is one of the deadly sins that is a persistent theme in this book, as greed was a theme in Penny's prior book, A Brutal Telling. This is what Penny does best. Her mysteries are not about forensics, timetables, alibis or violent action. They are about the human heart and spirit; about envy, resentment and fear eating away at people, threatening friendships, marriages, partnerships and even lives. But they are also about love, forgiveness and redemption offering hope for change and a forging of new, stronger bonds.
In A Trick of the Light, we see Louise Penny at the height of her powers. She is a master of characterization; a genius at creating a world that we enter into and fully live in, and want to return to. This is the finest book I've read this year and I have no doubt it will deservedly win many awards. Highly recommended.

A Trick of the Light: A Chief Inspector Gamache Novel (Chief Inspector Gamache Novels) Overview

"Penny has been compared to Agatha Christie [but] it sells her short. Her characters are too rich, her grasp of nuance and human psychology too firm...." --Booklist (starred review)“Hearts are broken," Lillian Dyson carefully underlined in a book. “Sweet relationships are dead."But now Lillian herself is dead. Found among the bleeding hearts and lilacs of Clara Morrow's garden in Three Pines, shattering the celebrations of Clara's solo show at the famed Musée in Montreal. Chief Inspector Gamache, the head of homicide at the Sûreté du Québec, is called to the tiny Quebec village and there he finds the art world gathered, and with it a world of shading and nuance, a world of shadow and light. Where nothing is as it seems. Behind every smile there lurks a sneer. Inside every sweet relationship there hides a broken heart. And even when facts are slowly exposed, it is no longer clear to Gamache and his team if what they've found is the truth, or simply a trick of the light.

Victory and Honor Review

I've been a W.E.B. Griffin fan for almost a decade now, which means I've been waiting impatiently for quite a while for each new release in each and every series that Griffin has written. Unfortunately, I've found a few of his recent novels a bit lacking compared to his previous works. In particular, I found it painful to read through his previously recent book "The Outlaws" (Dec. 2010) which I gave 2 stars. I know that sentiment is shared by other Griffan fans and is also reflected by the average 2.5 star Amazon ratings of his recent books versus 3.5-4+ ratings of older works (out of 75+ reviews per book).
I'm glad to say that this book is a definite improvement on some of his lower quality recent works! It's not one of his best, but for me, it was definitely an acceptable and fun read.
This book flows smoothly from start to finish. I was originally going to wait, but ended up purchasing an electronic version of the book on a whim a bit past midnight. A few hours - and one book - later, I finally looked up from my reader to see the first signs of daylight appear outside my window.
---
PROS:
--- Flows well. - While reading it, I don't have an urge to skip entire parts. The writing flows smoothly and makes you interested in wanting to turn each page as quickly as possible so you can find out what's next. For me, "The Outlaws" was a book that didn't flow well and which I wanted to skip whole sections, only to force myself to read it hoping that it would get better (hint: it didn't). That thankfully was not a problem with this book.CONS:
--- Limited / Tightly Focused Story - The story and plot is a lot more focused compared to previous books in this series. It almost seems (or is) linear in terms of what happens and what is being told. In previous books you'd have different sides, action happening simultaneously in different regions, etc. In this novel, it's almost entirely one side and following a group of people in a linear fashion. You get a much more limited view and much more limited action. There's also no major twists or mysteries.
--- Limited Characters Involved - This novel primarily focuses on a handful of characters with a small supporting cast. True, most stories only have a few main characters, but compared to previous novels in the Honor Bound series, the amount of character involvement diversity is a lot smaller. I guess one way to explain the difference is that in previous novels you might get at least a few pages (if not dozens) on the action or words of minor characters. In this novel, you'd get sentences instead (if at all).
--- Too short! - Ok, this might just be the age-old problem where the fan just wants more and more. And yes, that is definitely a factor. However, let's do a strict page count comparison using Amazon's hardcover page count figures. This book "Victory & Honor" has a page count of 320 pages. Compare that to "The Outlaws" in Dec. 2010 with 432 pages (although I'd take 320 good pages over 432 mediocre pages any day!). Further compare that to 464 pages in "The Vigilantes" in Aug. 2010 or 496 pages in "The Honor of Spies" or 528 pages in "The Hunters"... I think you get the picture. This book is 100 pages (1/3rd the current length!) shorter than recent releases and nearly 200 pages (2/3rds the current length!) shorter than older releases, which probably makes this one of the shortest works released by W.E.B. Griffin that was part of his main series.
---
While upon reflection I felt that there were elements of this book that were lacking, it is indisputably a huge improvement on recent books of Griffin's like "The Outlaws". Was I disappointed in the limited scope of the novel? Yes. Do I think Griffin could have done a better job or that his previous works are better? Yes. However, did I also enjoy myself while I was reading this novel? Yes.
For me, I read works by authors like W.E.B. Griffin for casual pleasure. If I have a good time while reading it and am smiling while I reflect upon it right after, I'm happy. To be honest, it was only while writing this review that I fully grasped the parts of the book that I felt were lacking as they were not issues or concerns while I was reading. Hence, despite its shortcomings, I gave it 4 stars.
---
DO NOT GET THIS BOOK:
If this will be your first W.E.B. Griffin book or your first book in the Honor Bound series, I strongly suggest you get one of his earlier works. It's probably best if you start out at the beginning of a series (both because all those books are great, but also because it'd give you a chronological progression of events as you inevitably acquire more of his works from that series).
If you're looking for a book with hidden meanings, multiple twists, and a complex plot, don't get this book.GET THIS BOOK:
If you're a long time Griffan fan (I guess we'd get his book anyways no matter what!), if you've read previous books in the Honor Bound series and want to find out what happens to the characters, or if you have some time and just want a very casual straight-forward read.

Victory and Honor Overview

The spectacular new book in New York Times-bestselling author W.E.B. Griffin's Honor Bound saga of World War II espionage. Wars come to an end. But then new ones begin. Just weeks after Hitler's suicide, Cletus Frade and his colleagues in the OSS find themselves up to their necks in battles every bit as fierce as the ones just ended. The first is political-the very survival of the OSS, with every department from Treasury to War to the FBI grabbing for its covert agents and assets. The second is on a much grander scale-the possible next world war, against Joe Stalin and his voracious ambitions. To get a jump on the latter, Frade has been conducting a secret operation, one of great daring-and great danger-but to conduct it and not be discovered, he and his men must walk a perilously dark line. One slip, and everyone becomes a casualty of war.

Maine Review

I began reading this book hesitantly and with low expectations. The story sounded intriguing, but I didn't know what to expect based on the other reviews I had seen. I have to say, though, that I loved this story from beginning to end. I liked that the book essentially had four narrators, all women from the same extended family, but from different generations and different immediate families, if that makes sense. We hear from each of them several times throughout. Each woman gets her own chapter when it's her turn to narrate, and key plot points are revealed or explained in bits and pieces from each woman's perspective.
For me, the characters were the best part of the book. I could identify with all of them, but with one in particular. They were all so unique, so interesting and quirky, yet completely believable. The writing was simple but flowed well. Honestly, I couldn't put the book down, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for an easy but pleasantly layered read.

Safe Haven Review

This certainly isn't a traditional sappy love story that Sparks usually writes. Sure it has the love story and it's set in North Carolina, but he puts in an element of danger. I have read all of his books and I love them all, however I am definitely tired of the "I love you" on the first date that practically occurs in all of his novels. The rest of this novel makes up for that quick love. It truly is impossible to put down. I made the mistake of starting it before bed, figuring I would read a few chapters and go to sleep - Well, I stayed up all night and finished it. They way it's written is strategic and effective in keeping the reader wanting more (which is why I had to finish it in one night). Sparks has said that this is the next movie adaptation and I'm sure it will work well. There is something for everyone: love story, family life, internal conflicts, danger, and a twist at the end. Well worth the money (the physical book is more $ than the Kindle version - so I don't know what everyone is complaining about; he's a best-seller, it came out yesterday - of course it's not going to be $5!) Overall, I loved it and I don't regret my purchase at all. I'm just sad I finished it already! Can't wait for the next one!

Safe Haven Overview

Dillinger Review

This is one of three books that Jack Higgins published under his real name Harry Patterson. Although based on John Dillinger the book is a work of fiction. After robbing a bank, John Dillinger flees to Mexico where he is essentially forced to work for the owner of a mining operation. Of course, Dillinger is not one to be forced into working for anyone and plans his escape - but other events overtake him. The story has some good twists and turns and plenty of action.
