Leaving Home: Short Pieces (Kindle Single) Review

This was an interesting book for me to read. I'm a fan of Picoult's books, although I consider them fairly light. They deal with heavier subjects, but the writing rarely gets deep into character study or anything like that. When I saw there were some new "short" stories to read out by her, I grabbed them and immediate read them.
They are fairly short. On Kindle, it's less than 800 locations for all three stories. I thought this would be enough for the author to get her point across, but I was both disappointed and elated at the same time.
The first story is a story about the loss of a child. Something that I consider the absolute worst thing that can happen to a parent. I cannot pretend to understand what they go through. The fact that she tackled this difficult subject, I think, is commendable. I think she lost me a bit in some of the symbolism. I got it, but I think it was unneeded. I think this may have been a bit of an experiment for her. I don't think it failed, but for what she was doing, it needed more length (even though it took up the first half of this short story collection).
The second piece is a letter she wrote to her son as he left for college. I will admit this chocked me up a bit. What a beautiful letter to prepare for your child that tells them so much. I'm sure as a mother, she must be so proud and I loved her voice here, the "cheering on" without a lot of preaching was really well done. I think I'll just xerox this to give to my kids when they go off into the world (they are still in Elementary school)... I'll just cross out her name and put mine there. *laughing* Seriously, this was very well done and I loved getting a look into her "real" life.
The third story is a story about a mom that takes a vacation, she just up and leaves the family to fend for themselves. I think all of us have had that urge to get in the car and get away from those people that keep yelling "Mom!!!" so I was sitting here cheering for the mom a few times. However, I think there was more going on and with the length, it was simply not able to be explored. While I am not sure it could be a whole book, I would like to see more about what was going on, the father mentioned a few things that made me think there was more to it. Having said that, I took away a little message from this piece about my own "hurry up and work work work" attitude. Sometimes you just need to leave it.
Overall, a decent undertaking by this author. I liked the format and it gave me something to read of hers while waiting for a new novel to be released.
Recommended for Picoult fans and other who enjoy short stories.

Leaving Home brings together three, previously published short pieces, each dealing with a variation on the theme of leaving home. The first, “Weights and Measures," deals with the tragic loss of a child; the second is a non-fiction letter Picoult wrote to her eldest son as he left for college; and, “Ritz" tells the story of a mother who takes the vacation all mothers need sometime.

Shipwrecked (Kindle Single) Review

I was familiar with the story because I was told it in person around the campfire years ago. It was a great feat of strength and survival with a bit of humour thrown in.
To read Mishka's story not only put it in colour but in High Definition.
I downloaded it at work just before lunch hour and even though people were waiting on me for lunch break, I had to keep reading and couldn't wait to get back to the story.
One thing that I don't care for is when writers write for the sake of writing. I like a good story told by a great story teller. If the author can write a great story without pissing around all day, then I can stick around to the end. I think that Mishka took a great story, a true story, and added the colour and surround sound to turn it into a great 3D experience for the reader.
Good job, I want to say now go out and produce more of these great stories but I am afraid that you may not always survive the research part.

I devote a good deal of time to reading books on my kindle, yet this is only the second book about which I've written such a review.
This is non-fiction which reads as fiction. It speaks to cliche, "I couldn't put it down". Actually, I didn't until I was finished. You won't either. I hope I clicked the correct button and gave it 5 stars.

The narrative builds pace like a locomotive that's lost its breaks and is careening downhill. It's a good, quick and satisfying read.
This is historical writing at its finest. Not only does it bring to life the questionable election of Rutherford B. Hays and post-Civil War militias, but also the Great Railroad Strike of 1877. It highlights an oft-forgotten part of American history. Never mind the romance of the train, if you've ever wondered why railroads were hated by many a hundred years ago, and, as a consequence why many other countries have more-developed rail systems than the United States, here's a good part of your answer.

In February, I embedded with the 101st Airborne division in Kandahar province to research a novel. I wound up writing my own Kindle Single, "Lost in Kandahar," about the obstacles our soldiers faced in fighting the Taliban. One reviewer wrote that that the piece offered a very different perspective on Afghanistan than "Three Cups of Tea." Now, unfortunately, I understand why. In this thoroughly researched piece, Jon Krakauer exposes Greg Mortenson as a terrible charlatan.
According to dozens of people who spoke to Krakauer, most of whom are quoted by name, Mortenson lied about the origins of his school-building project, lied about the number of schools he's built, lied about how much time he spends in Afghanistan, lied about his financial relationship with his charity, lied about how much he pays himself, lied about his "kidnapping" in 1996, and even lied about the fact that schools are mainly in relatively peaceful parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan. There are probably a few other lies I've forgotten. For his own ego and financial gain, Mortenson took advantage of the goodwill of donors in America and all over the world.
As Krakauer points out, we are so desperate for good news out of Afghanistan that we latched onto Mortenson's story despite some of its obvious flaws (the Taliban didn't really exist in Pakistan in 1996, for example). Mortenson's efforts to defend himself at this point are pathetic, and if he is smart - and wants to avoid a criminal indictment - he will come clean and then slink away, never to be seen or heard again. And hopefully, the rest of us will be a little wiser the next time a Pied Piper comes along promising to solve the world's ills -- for just a few bucks down!
