The Defender (Kindle Single) Review

As a fan who grew up watching Manute block shots for the Sixers in the early 90's, I enjoyed this brief, "behind-the-scenes" sketch of his public and personal life--especially his active political relationship with Sudan (which I was mostly unaware of). People are rarely as one-dimensional as we sometimes imagine them to be, and Manute is no exception. At appropriate spots in this detailed narrative, I found myself laughing out-loud (if you haven't seen a video of Manute shooting 3's, do so now), engaged by his big, but complicated personality, sobered by Sudan's struggles, and even motivated by Manute's activism.
The first-hand stories make this a must-read, and the writing makes this an enjoyable one. Highly recommended!

The Defender (Kindle Single) Overview

Manute Bol was the first African-born player in the NBA and, at seven foot seven inches, the tallest. In the 1980s and 90s he was also among the league's most fearsome shot-blockers and its most beloved figures. Off the basketball court, however, Bol's story was more remarkable than most fans ever knew. Activist, gambler, joker, rebel-Bol was a complex man whose fate was inextricably bound with that of the Sudan, his homeland. Writer Jordan Conn traveled to southern Sudan to explore Bol's remarkable path from Africa to the NBA, his rise to stardom and fall into obscurity, and his final role as a renowned humanitarian and key figure in his homeland's independence. Conn's account, the latest Kindle Single from The Atavist, is a funny and moving portrait of a man who lived a life befitting his outsized body. Jordan Conn is a freelance journalist based in the San Francisco Bay Area. He contributes regularly to SI.com, and his work has appeared in The New York Times, Sports Illustrated, the San Francisco Chronicle, the Philadelphia Inquirer, Slam, and Draft, among others.

Here Be Monsters... 50 Days Adrift At Sea (Kindle Single) Review

I really enjoy reading about extraordinary tales of survival. This is my first Kindle single, and I loved it. The idea of the single is great, and fits this story perfect. I guarantee you'll read this in on sitting, and it'll make you think different before your next boating/camping/any sort of trip!
Nearly as interesting as the main story is learning about life in Atafu (a small island of 500 people), a place I never even knew existed. I really recommend this single, definitely worth your $2.

Here Be Monsters... 50 Days Adrift At Sea (Kindle Single) Overview

They did it for the simplest of reasons: adventure. Three young friends, on a drunken dare, set out on a dinghy for a nearby island. But when the gas ran out and they drifted into barren waters, their biggest threat wasn't the ocean -- it was each other.

Up Jumped the Devil (Darryl Billups Mystery) Review

Darryl Billups, Baltimore Maryland Police Reporter, has to deal with office politics, personal relationships, and the evils of race hate and domestic terrorism. Walker has an excellent ear for conversations, and an excellent eye for real life situations. There is little need for suspension of disbelief, so well structured is the plot and the characterizations. A nice blend of public and private, suspense and romance.

Killing Floor (Jack Reacher, No. 1) Review

I'm new to the Jack Reacher series but I have to say that I enjoyed this first book. I was interested in reading what other reviewers had to say: Author was charged with using the word "shrugged" too much. I never noticed, I was busy turning the pages I guess. Author was charged with using short, choppy sentences. Is that a literary offense? Because if it is, it's time to take Hemingway's work out and burn it, he having been critically lauded for years for that short, choppy style which is supposed to be very manly -- in a literary sense, I suppose. All I know is that I find old Hem's work mindnumbingly dull. At least Mr. Child keeps me awake, those choppy sentences lend a sense of urgency to the story. (Just like Earl Emerson's short chapters in 'Pyro'!) Author is charged with not being an expert on America. Neither am I and I've spent 48 out of 50 years here. Oh, and one review bemoaned the fact that somehow the author failed to realize the US has no Marines stationed in Europe, that we have no naval base there. Hm, I don't keep up with the exact locations of all US bases but I spent two years at Zaragoza Air Base, Spain, and when I was there, the US had a naval base at Rota. Author is charged with having a written a very violent book. Well. There you have me. It IS violent. If violence disturbs you, what the heck are you doing reading books in this genre in the first place? There was a great honking picture of a bloody handprint on the cover of the paperback I bought -- I would have thought that was a (you'll excuse the pun) dead giveaway as to the nature of this book. Oh, almost forgot. The author is also charged with too much coincidence in the brother/killing plot point. Stranger things happen every day -- gee, Bush got elected twice. I think THAT's stretching coincidence!
Yes, Jack Reacher is an anti-hero. Yes, the books has some flaws (as most every book I've ever read does). But I enjoyed the book and am looking forward to seeing Reacher's character progression in the next book. Do I think he's the next Lucas Davenport? Nope, not unless he gets a stronger sense of humor and a lot more sexy. But Reacher is verrrry interesting!
OK, I'm done defending the book. Now, here's the bit that bothered me: A top gun in the Treasury Dept drops out of sight and the Feds don't swarm all over looking for him when his prints come across the computer? A second Treasury Dept worker is brutally murdered in an airport and (1) it's the busy airport at Atlanta and no one sees it??? and (2) the Feds don't follow up on this either? Still -- I was able to suspend my disbelief long enough to overlook these things, just because I wanted to see what Jack would do next.

Second Son (Kindle Single) Review

I don't know what the word count on this one is, but I'd guess it falls into novelette territory, which is probably the perfect length for the story.
If you're hoping for some kind of formative, coming-of-age event in Reacher's past, you might be disappointed. What readers get here is a young Reacher who is already about as calculating and decisive as he'll ever be. Still, if they take it for what it is (a new Reacher story that just happens to take place 37 years ago), I think fans of the series will enjoy this one. I know I did.

I Have Nothing to Wear: A Painless 12-Step Program to Declutter Your Life So You Never Have to Say This Again Review

As an interior designer, I am always on the look out for new books that include organizing tips. I Have Nothing To Wear!: A Painless 12-Step Program to Declutter Your Life So You Never Have to Say This Again! by Jill Martin and Dana Ravich does not disappoint for those readers whose clothing is out of control.
Chances are, if you "Have nothing to wear," it's because your clothing is a disorganized mess. You are guilty of not getting rid of clothes, but just adding new items. If this sounds like you, this book will help.
As part of a 12 step program, the book begins with admitting you have a problem...(OK, I will admit that I felt the whole 12 step approach was a bit drastic and melodramatic, which is one reason I gave the book 4 stars.)
The authors advise you to get a friend to help with the process. A tough friend.
The goal is to get rid of 75% of your wardrobe. (Again, this is not for everyone, but for folks who basically never weed out their stuff.) Make piles: keep, donate and maybe.
The process of decluttering and organizing can be tough...but the payoff is immense! As the authors tell you, you will feel better about yourself when you are organized. Plus, by weeding out what you really don't wear--and paying attention to what you are getting rid of--you will learn your true style.
Once everything is weeded out, you will want to organize and beautify your closet/drawers. Once everything has its place, and you keep only what you wear, deciding what to put on becomes a no-brainer!
I would also like to recommend a book I give my clients all the time to help you organize/beautify the rest of your home: HARMONIOUS ENVIRONMENT: BEAUTIFY, DETOXIFY & ENERGIZE YOUR LIFE, YOUR HOME & YOUR PLANET.
Highly recommend.

The Junket (Kindle Single) Review

This is one of the best stories I can think of about how our culture has changed, what is driving it, and where it is all taking us. I loved this, deeply loved this. Mike Albo was turned into, as he puts it, "The Silkwood of Swag". He was offered up as a scapegoat at the Times for a culture that relies on freebies sneaking off through the system in order for the writers to (barely) survive and, it should be said, for the companies to get column inches, and, in a way, for the paper that says it eschews such things to survive as well. What he's done with that experience is so funny and smart, and bigger than the NYT thing---it's about the sad horrible ways the whole rigged media ad game works. Also, it's dishy as hell. Now hit that "buy" button and enjoy.

The Junket (Kindle Single) Overview

From author and performer Mike Albo comes this hilarious, harrowing and totally fictional novella about a struggling freelance writer living in New York City named Mike Albo. He lands an enviable gig writing about shopping and fashion for the city's major newspaper, but an ill-fated promotional junket gets Albo into hot water. He becomes a gossip item and finds himself caught in an acrimonious war between Old and New Media. Here's a gimlet-eyed account of the back-biting media scene, a glimpse into the inner workings of the fashion crowd, and a candid portrait of what it takes to survive as a writer in today's chattering and watchful New York City."I was perilously close to exposing a secret underground economy of promotion: favors and junkets and banquets and gifts that keeps the city in motion, and keeps underpaid writers at work. Basically, I became the Silkwood of Swag."

The 39 Clues: Cahills vs. Vespers Book 1: The Medusa Plot Review

Two years have passed since Amy and Dan survived the hunt for the 39 clues. The now 16- and 13-year-olds have settled into the rebuilt mansion of their dear grandmother, with Uncle Fiske and Nellie as legal guardians. Both have grown and matured some; Amy even has a steady boyfriend named Evan. She still stutters sometimes, but has more confidence in herself. She knows that she will never escape being a Cahill, so she has been preparing herself for anything with constant workouts, self-defense lessons, and a fancy command center with lots of high-tech stuff. Dan, on the other hand, is bored. After racing around the world on an important quest, eighth grade seems rather trivial. He even drops into periods of depression. But before long, things get interesting --- and life-threatening --- again.
The Cahills are finally attempting a peaceful reunion, having called a cease fire. The older generation hasn't quite gotten the hang of it yet, but the younger cousins have actually become friends. Sort of. This is good as there's another enemy lurking about, and the Cahills will have to band together in order to survive. The evil Vespers kidnap seven of the Cahills to use as ransom: Nellie, Reagan, Uncle Fiske, Natalie, Alistair Oh, Ted, and 12-year-old Phoenix Wizard. The Vespers are using the hostages to force Dan, Amy and their cousins scrambling to steal a priceless painting of a severed Medusa head.
But nothing is as it seems, and trust is treacherous. Dan and Amy have serious doubts that they will be able to rescue Nellie and the other hostages in time. While Amy hits the library for research and reaches out to other Cahill resources, Dan starts on a backup plan. At the end of the clue hunt, they had destroyed the very dangerous 39-ingredient formula invented by Gideon Cahill that would have given a person absolute power. No human should have that kind of power. But one copy of the formula still exists --- in Dan's photographic memory. Dan starts collecting the rare ingredients to recreate the formula that he will use on himself to save Nellie.
This new spinoff series from the original 39 Clues books starts off with an adventurous bang. Gordon Korman takes the lead novel and does an outstanding job with lots of excitement, nonstop action and more around-the-world quests. In the first book, he shoots Dan and Amy off to Florence, Italy, to hunt down the famous and grotesque painting of the severed Medusa head. He uses lots of vivid imagery to set the scenes, giving readers a unique look at the story. Dan and Amy are a bit older, with different hurdles to overcome and mountains to traverse; Amy is in a serious relationship, and Dan is struggling with some depression. This may explain why the humor is a bit keyed down here as compared to previous installments, though the story does have some funny parts.
Keep your eyes roving for those clues stashed in the pages! Book Two is due out in December 2011 courtesy of Jude Watson.
