The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid: A Memoir Review

Seriously. I was up past bedtime, and I was reading Bryson's description of lame 1950's toys. I won't give it away, but imagine what he can do with the topic of "electric football". After a particularly vigorous episode of chortling, my wife trudged out of bed to decree that, if I insisted on continuing to read, I'd have to take it downstairs.
And that's what this book is, a laugh-out-loud remembrance of a simpler, sillier time. Bryson's travelogues are what made him famous, and he never would have made it without a fantastic memory for detail and an ability to convey a vivid mental picture of the topics he chooses. His descriptions of 1950's Des Moines are consistently evocative. It's like a travelogue unearthed from a 50 year old time capsule. I feel like I have visited there.
Still, readers of Bryson known that what truly sets him apart is his uncanny ability to attract and describe morons, as well as all manner of idiotic situations (generally self-inflicted). For a man who can do this on, say, a simple trip to Australia, imagine how much comedy gold can be mined from a childhood in the Midwest of the 50's. It is, as they say, a target-rich environment. His remembrances include family, friends, school, Des Moines, lame childhood toys, nuclear bombs, and more. Even things like TV dinners, which we have all heard mocked before, are skewered in new and amusing ways.
For all of that, though, the memoir is not mean spirited. I think that the ridicule works so well because it is easy to sense Bryson's real affection for his subjects (well, at least the ones who aren't carbonized by the x-ray vision of the Thunderbolt Kid). He's poking fun, but in a way that family and friends might poke fun at each other over old childhood foibles at a Thanksgiving dinner. It's the humor that you get when your wife knows that you're ridiculous, but loves you just the same. This book belongs with such classic tributes to youth as The Wonder Years, Stand By Me, and A Christmas Story. Buy it, and enjoy it. Just try not to read it next to someone's bedroom.

The Geography of Bliss: One Grump's Search for the Happiest Places in the World Review

If you're looking for a definitive answer to the book's premise, i.e., that happiness is about place, you might be disappointed. If, however, you are game for a journey about exploring that concept, Eric Weiner's book is for you. At once intelligent and witty, Geography of Bliss takes the reader to unfamiliar places to meet strangely familiar people. That's because the essence of what makes us happy (or unhappy) is basically the same everywhere, alloyed only by our culture and circumstances. It's a book that will make you think and laugh on the same page. And, it might just make you happy.

A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail (Official Guides to the Appalachian Trail) Review

This is much more than a travelogue of two neophyte hikers on the Appalachian Trail, and readers looking for a blow by blow account of the travails of Bill Bryson and his companion, Stephen Katz, will be disappointed. Hiking provides only a backdrop to a heartfelt discourse on the social condition of America, local history, the environment, and the complexities of friendship. The pretext for the book was Bryson's return to the United States after twenty years in Britain, and his interest in "rediscovering America" after such a lengthy absence.
The vast majority of the reviews of the book cite its hilarity (one reviewer called it "choke-on-your-coffee funny"), and indeed there are very many funny parts. However, the deeper I got into the book, I detected a strong shift in the author's sentiment from satire to deep introspection. His observations became more acute, more angry, and more individualized as his long hike constantly brings to his mind the fragile environment of the Trail, the insanity of bureacrats entrusted with the AT, and his own personal limitations.
This was my first encounter with Bill Bryson, and while I found him entertaining, a beautiful writer, and an astute observer, some readers will be put off my his sharp satiric wit. It is certain that he will offend somebody. A friend of mine, who also read the book, was very much upset by the fact that Bryson and Katz didn't hike all 2,200 miles of the Trail, and that somehow their "failure" should prevent the telling of the story. This is utter nonsense and just throws more manure onto the present dung heap that has accumulated from the participants involved in peak bagging, wilderness races, and experiential therapy groups.
Bryson and Katz at least tried to hike the entire AT, and they returned from their hike as changed men who learned many lessons about the wilderness and friendship. Towards the end of the book, the two men are talking about the hike. When Katz remarks that "we did it," Bryson reminds him that they didn't even see Mount Katahdin, much less climb it. Katz says, "Another mountain. How many do you need to see, Bryson?" I agree with Katz (and ultimately Bryson). They hiked the Appalachian Trail.

The Pirates of Somalia: Inside Their Hidden World Review

Jay Bahadur's "The Pirates of Somalia" is a incredible work of non-fiction. There are actually two stories told in this book. The first is a fascinating look into the history of what may be the most failed of "failed states" on the planet and the piracy scourge that has developed on its shores. Understanding piracy must be understood within the context of the country as a whole and Bahadur does a great job of explaining this. The inside look into pirate gangs, pirate leaders, hostages, politicians and others provides a viewpoint not available elsewhere. But the second story, and equally intriguing, is about a Canadian rookie journalist flying to Somalia on a whim, when no other reporter would do so, with a half-baked plan to embed himself with marine kidnappers for a few months - not something you hear about often.
Kudos to Bahadur for a beautifully written, well researched book. Enjoyed every page.

The Pirates of Somalia: Inside Their Hidden World Overview

Somalia, on the tip of the Horn of Africa, has been inhabited as far back as 9,000 BC. Its history is as rich as the country is old. Caught up in a decades-long civil war, Somalia, along with Iraq and Afghanistan, has become one of the most dangerous countries in the world. Getting there from North America is a forty-five-hour, five-flight voyage through Frankfurt, Dubai, Djibouti, Bossaso (on the Gulf of Aden), and, finally, Galkayo. Somalia is a place where a government has been built out of anarchy. For centuries, stories of pirates have captured imaginations around the world. The recent bands of daring, ragtag pirates off the coast of Somalia, hijacking multimillion-dollar tankers owned by international shipping conglomerates, have brought the scourge of piracy into the modern era.The capture of the American-crewed cargo ship Maersk Alabama in April 2009, the first United States ship to be hijacked in almost two centuries, catapulted the Somali pirates onto prime-time news. Then, with the horrific killing by Somali pirates of four Americans, two of whom had built their dream yacht and were sailing around the world (“And now on to: Angkor Wat! And Burma!" they had written to friends), the United States Navy, Special Operation Forces, FBI, Justice Department, and the world's military forces were put on notice: the Somali seas were now the most perilous in the world.Jay Bahadur, a journalist who dared to make his way into the remote pirate havens of Africa's easternmost country and spend months infiltrating their lives, gives us the first close-up look at the hidden world of the pirates of war-ravaged Somalia.Bahadur's riveting narrative exposé-the first ever-looks at who these men are, how they live, the forces that created piracy in Somalia, how the pirates spend the ransom money, how they deal with their hostages. Bahadur makes sense of the complex and fraught regional politics, the history of Somalia and the self-governing region of Puntland (an autonomous region in northeast Somalia), and the various catastrophic occurrences that have shaped their pirate destinies. The book looks at how the unrecognized mini-state of Puntland is dealing with the rise-and increasing sophistication-of piracy and how, through legal and military action, other nations, international shippers, the United Nations, and various international bodies are attempting to cope with the present danger and growing pirate crisis.A revelation of a world at the epicenter of political and natural disaster.
From the Hardcover edition.

Swing Your Sword: Leading the Charge in Football and Life Review

As a Tech fan and former student, I was interested in finally hearing Leach's side of the story. This book turned out to be so much more. I'm so glad that this is more of an autobiography, and that we learned more from Mike Leach's own pen about his life and his history. I agree completely with Donald Trump... Mike Leach was screwed... and the good 'ol boy network in Lubbock will continue to assassinate his character, lie about his actions, etc. in order to legitimize their screwing of Mike Leach. But in the end, Leach has won. He kept his honor, his principles, and his sense of humor about the whole thing. The scumbags in the bell tower have to live with themselves, and that can't be easy. Great book Mike, and I'm glad I actually purchased it and read it.

Swing Your Sword: Leading the Charge in Football and Life Overview

SWING YOUR SWORD is the first ever book by one of the most fascinating and successful coaches in sports today. A maverick who took an unlikely path to coaching through law school, Mike Leach talks about his unorthodox approach to coaching and the choices that have brought him success throughout his career. A lover of the game who started creating formations and drawing his own plays as a kid, Leach took his Texas Tech Red Raiders to numerous bowl games, achieving the #2 slot in national rankings and being voted 2008 Coach of the Year before being unceremoniously fired at the end of the 2009 season. The scandalous nature of his dismissal created a media frenzy and began a personal battle between Leach and his accusers that remains unresolved.

The Swinger: A Novel Review

I really expected to enjoy this Roman a clef story, feeling it would be funny and constitute an inside look at what went wrong in his life.
The subject is obvious, but the characters are so thinly drawn and one-dimensional that it soon bogged down in silly exaggerations and totally over-the-top episodes. The story is so unbelievable and delights in kicking a guy (as well as his family) when he is down. I was never a fan of the obvious subject, but this book is really mean-spirited and serves no purpose other than making money for the authors and ridiculing its subject.
The fairy tale ending seems like it was written by a high school junior and lacks all credibility.
Seriously don't waste your time.

The Swinger: A Novel Overview

The most famous athlete on the planet is a bit off his game.Maybe you heard? His name, as we all know, is Herbert X. "Tree" Tremont, and he's the richest and most celebrated athlete of our time—a multicultural golfing icon with fifty-three Tour wins, thirteen major victories, a smoking hot wife, and two adorable kids. Tree's carefully cultivated image of country club values has made him so beloved by corporate America that he is the first celebrity in history to endorse Coke and Pepsi. The world kneels at his feet.As it turns out, so do a good many agreeable young women. When a reporter uncovers evidence that Tree's sexual appetites are as prodigious as his tee shots, his public and private lives collide, producing the juiciest scandal in sports history. In this high-spirited romp that recalls the hilarious work of Dan Jenkins and Rick Reilly, two veteran Sports Illustrated writers have some wicked fun with recent events as they take us inside "Treeworld" and the secret society of elite golf. It's a wild ride that whisks us between the ropes and the sheets of the PGA Tour, cracks open Tree's cloistered inner circle, and propels us around the world in high style . . . from Tree's top-secret compound in Florida to the wine cellar of Augusta National for an illicit tryst on Masters Sunday . . . from the deck of his $61 million yacht to the plush interior of his favorite private plane (he owns a few) . . . from the secluded beaches of Maui to an exclusive Southampton estate. As the scandal spirals out of control and Tree is forced underground, we get to know his entourage: Andrew Finkelman, his famously brusque manager who left IGM to manage Tree alone; Turner Darlington, the bizarre and charismatic founder and CEO of Tree's main sponsor, Arrow Golf; Tree's wife, Belinda, a hot-blooded Italian former bikini-model who doesn't play golf but swings a mean fireplace tool; and a healthy number of the hundreds of women whose liaisons with Tree are brought to light as the plot unfolds.Bursting with inside observations and anecdotes about pro golf and life on Tour, The Swinger is a fast, funny, and gleefully outrageous novel that illuminates the life of the modern world-class, life-by-the-tail athlete. It is also a meditation on love, sex, marriage, friendship, celebrity, and the media. It is written with a smile, not with disdain for athletes like Tree, but with empathy and affection. It ends with the hope that Tree's transformation, redemption, and return to greatness may be just around the corner.

Call Me Joe Review

Poul Anderson was one of the greats of the golden age of Science Fiction. "Call Me Joe" is a short story published in the late 1950's in one of the popular science fiction magazines of the time, where I first read it (I think it was Astounding, but I'm not sure). The basic premise is a scientific mission to Jupiter creates a life form that can survive on the Jovian "surface", remote controlled from a moon station. The controlling scientist is a handicapped man who feels the power of the whole, vibrant creature that he controls. Is this beginning to sound familiar? Did James Cameron read this story and let it percolate for 60 years?
As always, Poul Anderson's prose is a joy to read, and the ending, while not a complete surprise, is very satisfying. Read it to see where "Avatar" came from. And for the pleasure of tasting the Master's work.

Call Me Joe Overview

A classic Campbell-edited novelette from the Fifties, with the original cover and all four interior drawings by Kelly Freas. “Call Me Joe" is Poul Anderson at his best, with the planetary science working neatly in the background to support a gripping human story.

Cat's Cradle (Kurt Vonnegut series) Review

Cat's Cradle is by far the best Vonnegut novel that I have yet read. Blending his patented wry humor with acute social insight presented in an absurd fantasy world, Vonnegut has written an exceptional novel of love, lies, and the self destruction of mankind. The story centers around the narrator, Jonah, who is called by name once in the entire book. We are told in the beginning that he is writing a book on the events of the day the first atomic bomb was dropped on Japan. His research leads him to a correspondence with Newt Hoenikker, the midget son of Doctor Felix Hoenikker, father of the atomic bomb. After meeting with Newt, destiny leads our protagonist to the impoverished island republic of San Lorenzo, where among other adventures, he finds religion, falls in love, and becomes president. All of this by itself would make for a very entertaining book, but it is not in the story line that Vonnegut's genius lies. Cat's Cradle is rife with painfully accurate insights into the institutions that our society holds so dear, such as, religion, politics, and science. Vonnegut invents for the inhabitants of San Lorenzo a brand new religion based completely and admittedly on "foma", or lies. This wouldn't be so shocking, except for the fact that this "bokonism" seems to make perfect sense. Other Vonnegut ironies pervade the book and are too elaborate to go into. Kurt Vonnegut is my favorite author of all time. Cat's Cradle is one of his funniest, most absurd, and frightening novels. This book truly causes one to stop and think about the things that one holds as unquestionably true. All of the incredible people, places, things, and ideas in Cat's Cradle are intricately woven into a perfect tapestry that sums up and spells out many of mankind's self-created problems in 191 pages.

In the Garden of Disgrace (The Garden Series Book 3) Review

This is the third & final installment of Wicklund's In the Garden series, and I loved every minute of it. This story lacks the intensity of the first book, as this is a well-executed story of redemption instead.
Lady Jillian is engaged, but she can't deny her best friend who wants to watch a duel incognito. She goes along but somehow finds herself in the get-away carriage of Adrian St. John, Earl of Wickham, (or "Lord Wicked," as he's known to the ton) who flees the scene when he accidentally kills his opponent. Jillian is finally returned home two days later after Adrian escapes to France, but though nothing happened, the damage to her reputation has been done. Jilted by her fiance, she retires to the country to live out her days as a fallen woman.
Eight years later, Adrian returns to England to find Jillian's brother demanding that he marry her to restore her reputatation. He's willing, but Jillian is of another mind altogether. And so an enthralling story commences.
This was a wonderful book! Wicklund is an amazing author, and I wish she had more available. Again she offers an interesting & entertaining story with characters one can't help but love.
I adore Jillian & loved reading about all of her quirks & effective bird-flipping at society's expectations. She figures her reputation was ruined when she didn't do anything wrong, so now she does exactly what she wants, when she wants.
Adrian is an exciting hero, and one can't help but root for him to win Jillian's hand. The passion between the two characters is intense, & it's amusing to see Adrian meet his match in a woman who's willing to buck convention even more than he is.
Add Jillian's aging Aunt Prudence into the mix, along with Jillian's older brother, Simon Fitzgerald, Marquess of Sutherfield (read his story in book 2 of the series, In the Garden of Seduction (The Garden Series)), their cousin Philip, Jillian's ex-fiance, & Jillian's "best friend," and the supporting cast is fleshed out nicely while helping move the story along at an appropriate pace.
I'm preparing to re-read this book as I type (I bought & read it 2 mos ago), and I find myself excited over the prospect. This is a great read & certainly price-worthy. Read it! I think you'll agree.
This is the third book in the series:
1 - In the Garden of Temptation (The Garden Series)
2 - In the Garden of Seduction (The Garden Series)
4 - In the Garden of Deceit (coming Summer 2011!)

In the Garden of Disgrace (The Garden Series Book 3) Overview

When 17-year-old Lady Jillian Fitzgerald sneaks out to spy on a duel, she believes she is merely guilty of an indiscretion. But when the duel takes a deadly turn and Jillian becomes an unwilling passenger in the fleeing carriage of the infamous "Lord Wicked," she knows what began as a lark has become a disaster. One night of bad judgment and her life is changed forever.

The Trouble With Love (Texas One Night Stands) Review

Having read and greatly enjoyed Ms. Reeves' novel, Just One Look, I was looking forward to picking up a copy of her newest book. I was not disappointed. Although The Trouble With Love is laced with humor and sensuality, it's also a poignant tale of forgiveness and redemption and knowing when to let go. Our heroine finds her happily ever after, but not before she faces the ghosts of her past and accepts the future that can be hers. Do yourself a favor; download a copy. Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy Review

Back when babies were just daydreams, I recieved "What to Expect When You're Expecting" (3rd ed.) from a pregnant friend who had an extra copy. Not knowing any better, I was quite pleased. Once I became pregnant and actually needed a guide, however, that changed. I found the book to be poorly organized, overly conversational and condescending in tone (especially given my plans to be a stay-at-home mom), and generally useless for anything other than instilling fear and paranoia. Most exasperating, though, was the "organization." Symptoms that can arise during varying parts of pregnancy are scattered haphazardly amongst the monthly chapters. This means that the book must be read cover to cover and all material retained in memory if hunting through the index and flipping back and forth between sections doesn't sound appealing.
Enter the "Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy." Hallelujah! Not wanting to suffer through another mediocre guide to pregnancy, I looked through every book I could get my hands on, and this was the only one that satisfied my criteria. It is written by trustworthy professionals in clear yet -professional- language, it provides information on "pregnancy, childbirth and your newborn" in chronological order, and best of all, it contains separate sections entitled, appropriately, "decision guides for pregnancy, childbirth and parenthood," "pregnancy reference guide," and "complications of pregnancy and childbirth," each with a table of contents at the beginning of the section. Instead of having to take a wild guess at which chapter (or, more likely, chapters) cramping might have landed in in "What to Expect" or searching the entire index, I could find it, along with all the other things I might be wondering about, in the reference guide. Blessed simplicity!
The "Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy" was the only book I needed. Once I found it, "What to Expect When You're Expecting" went back on the shelf and stayed there.

Wish List (a Donovan Creed Novel) Review

This little page turner of a book houses laughter and thrills between its binding. Well written, Locke does a good job of of using adult themes to tell a story that is not only entertaining, but also informative. Surprisingly enough, the tale of Buddy Pancake can be seen as a cautionary tale. A tale that does not hit you over the face with life lessons and instead uses humor to get its point across. Twists and turns scattered throughout the novel make it a book that is hard to put down.

Wish List (a Donovan Creed Novel) Overview

Be careful what you wish for! When Buddy Pancake and his drinking buddies stumble across the Wish List website, they jokingly post their “impossible" wishes. Imagine their surprise when, one by one, the wishes start coming true! But Buddy and his pals neglected to read the fine print explaining the price they must pay for the wishes they've been granted.Wish list is a compelling, nail-biting, laugh-out-loud thriller in the tradition of Saving Rachel.

I absolutely loved this book. I became a big fan of Nicholls with his first novel (A Question of Attraction -- originally titled "Starter for Ten" with its U.K. edition.) I was a little letdown by his second -- The Understudy, which was fun, but not quite as good as his first. This book exceeds his first. He takes a great device -- following the lives of one couple on the same day over a period of 20 years -- and does a masterful job of storytelling with it. We go from the couple's idealistic college days -- they meet on the day of their graduation -- all the way into their late 30s, with all the physical and emotional changes that come during that timespan. We see the career missteps along the way, and all the various relationships they have while still remaining friends -- and the woman, Emma, always secretly in love with Dexter Mayhew, who has more than a few wild oats to sow before he realizes the woman he should be with is the one who's always been his best friend. The writing is absolutely marvelous. The dialogue is absolutely terrific -- the couple have a teasing/kneedling way of talking to each other and the reparteee between them remains funny and fresh throughout even though the novel is long -- 435 pages.
To say much more would be to give too much away. But if you like insightful books about relationships that can touch all of your emotions, this is the book for you. I think structurally the way Nicholls manages to take you on an extraordinary trip from the first page to the very last is a tour de force.
I had to buy this from amazon/uk because it was available in Britain a year before it became available in the United States, but I'm so happy I got it. This is definitely a book I will re-read several times -- and I hope Nicholls continues to have a prolific career.

Caribbean Moon (A Manny Williams Thriller) Review

CARIBBEAN MOON by RICK MURCER introduces Detective Manny Williams & his wife Louise, his partner, Sophie Lee (an Asian-American), her husband Randy, Chief Gavin Crosby, his wife Stella, their son Mike (a Rookie Cop) and his bride Lexy. The District Attorney Liz Casnnovsky & her husband Lynn, CSI Alex Downs & his wife Barbara. All are members of the Lansing Police Department (as in Lansing, Michigan), except Liz, the DA and her stockbroker husband, Lynn. They are acommpaning Mike & Lexy Crosby on their Honeymoon cruise aboard the Carosel's OCEAN DUCHESS to San Juan, Puerto Rico and the caribbean islands.
While docked in San Juan, a grizzly murder is committed in a San Juan hotel, which brings in Detective Christina Perez of the San Juan Police Department and FBI Special Agents Corner & Tucker. Soon, another murder occurs on board the Ocean Duchess and the MO is strikingly similar to a case the Lansing Detectives had worked and solved, with the killer in prison. Doesn't take long for the Lansing cops to be fully engaged with Chief of Security Richardson, a retired NYPD Detective with an alcohol problem, and Captain Vicente Serafini, the Ship's Captain. As you read this carefully plotted novel you are gripped in suspense as you scroll down your Kindle. The scenes are masterfully and vividly laid out, you feel the Caribbean brerezes, smell the coconuts, the rich Pina Coladas and Cuba Libres. You get to know the characters indepth, and you like them. Then Robert Peppercorn appears as he is released from prison. You learn first-hand from him that he is now Eli Jenkins. He next appears in San Juan, and you learn he is a passenger on the Ocean Duchess . . . with a score to settle with the Lansing cops. The plot thickens and you are kept on the edge of your seat as bodies start showing up in rapid succession. Soon, the ship's Captain allows the Lansing Cops to be part of the task force, headed by FBI Special Agent Corner to conduct an all out search for the killer.
The ending will catch you totally off-guard! I highly recommend this FIVE STAR novel and guarantee you will be looking forward, as I am to DECEITFUL MOON by RICK MURCER. Detective Manny Williams and his partner Sophie Lee take us on another ride in a taught detective novel.

Caribbean Moon (A Manny Williams Thriller) Overview

This is written in the tradition of Connelly, Patterson of old, and JA Konrath. Small-town detective/workaholic, Manny Williams is thrilled with the prospect of finally taking the long-awaited vacation he had promised his wife, Louise. The couple's exotic getaway begins in sunny San Juan, Puerto Rico, by attending the June wedding of a fellow Lansing police officer, followed with an incredible week-long Southern Caribbean cruise on the glamorous Ocean Duchess. Tropical paradise appears to be a perfect recipe for desperately needed R and R...until the first dead body. A bizarre, seemingly random murder in their posh San Juan Hotel, and the heinous cruise ship deaths of two of Lansing's law enforcement family, brings Manny, and his unique skills, out of cruise mode and head-long into the FBI-led investigation. Manny soon discovers that in this killer's twisted perception nothing is off limits, prompting a race against time that could cost him everything. If you like edge-of-your-seat thrillers laced with humor, you'll love this!

Muu. Beee. ¡Así fue / Moo, Baa, La La La, Spanish Edition Review

The English _Moo, Baa, La-la-la_ was the first Sandra Boynton book I ever saw, and I instantly fell in love. I bought it long before I had anyone to whom to read it, and quickly developed the ability to recite it from memory (to sell people on a new favorite author).
When my little nephew was born, I began reading to him from every book I had that he might appreciate. This is what I do with all tiny children, but in his case EVERY child-related thing in his home was electronic, and I was concerned for his development. I began by reading to him the lone Spanish-language board book I had at the time, _Recién Nacido_ (which I also highly recommend).
The first time I read this book to him, in English, he was seated on my lap and facing the book, but ... the moment I let out a good loud "MOO," he nearly gave himself whiplash trying to see where that strange noise had come from! The animal noises fascinated him to the point that this became the one book he wouldn't explore alone; he just turned it over and over, apparently seeking the button to push for the sound effects. Despite the puzzlement, this quickly became one of a group of favorites he would pull out of the basket during every visit.
When I found the Spanish translation, our nephew was out of the country, with an indefinite return date. I bought it anyway, waiting for the chance to show him. When he returned, age 2 1/2, after nearly a year away, he scarcely recognized us and was very upset. I went home, got the Spanish and English of this book, and went over to see if we could get re-acquainted this way. He immediately sat down to look and giggled now at the animals themselves, which he recognized after a year on the farm. "¡Vaca!" "¡Caballo!" Both versions became great favorites, and often he chose to pick up the one right after the other.
Other translations of charming books, especially the rhyming ones, too often fall short. _Muú, Beee, Así fue_ does not disappoint. Fear not to stock up on copies of this one in *both* languages, to share as often as possible with other families and spread the joy around.

Carpe Bead'em Review

This was a very good story. I loved the characters-crazy Aunt Grace was my favorite. The story moved along well and quickly. The main reason I only gave it three stars was the horrible spelling and grammar. Did the Kindle version not have an editor? I admit, I am a bit of a grammar snob, but some of these mistakes were awful. The use of "are" instead of "our" is a huge pet peeve of mine. Otherwise, the story was great!

Carpe Bead'em Overview

Orphaned at a young age, Hallie Mediate was raised by her (slightly) crazy Great Aunt Grace on the wrong side of the tracks in Cincinnati. Hallie dreamed of escaping her hometown and never looking back. After putting herself through college, landing her dream job in Chicago, and starting a romance with her handsome running partner Bo Pompillio, life is finally exactly as she wants it. That is, until she's transferred back to the hometown. Not wanting her past to cross paths with her future, Hallie puts her relationship with Bo on hold. When she arrives in town, Hallie finds crazy Aunt Grace rummaging through a dumpster looking for the “perfect" welcome home gift for her niece. That's just the beginning. After that, Aunt Grace stays busy by dying her stolen poodle's hair pink and leaving the dog on her apartment roof to pee, throwing bricks out the window at passing neighbors, and climbing every flag pole to kiss the ornamental eagle. Hallie finds some sanity at a local jewelry-making class where she uncovers a hidden talent for beading. When her talent is discovered by a major department store jewelry buyer, Hallie realizes that what she had in Chicago might not have been her dream life after all. When faced with the choice of moving back to Chicago and Bo or taking a leap of faith to start her own jewelry company (with Aunt Grace in tow), Hallie has to make a decision. Will she let her past and her future collide, or will she or keep searching for the happiness she may already have found?

Chickens, Mules and Two Old Fools Review

If you're looking to experience sunny Spain, and maybe even life in a tiny village tucked in the Alpujarra Mountains, and without leaving home, then CHICKENS, MULES AND TWO OLD FOOLS is the book for you.
Approaching retirement, Vicky and her husband, Joe, one day decide to pack up their bags and leave their comfortable Sussex, England home and settle in the village El Hoya, Spain. It is not long before they come to learn village life is full of surprises and quirky mishaps, and with hilarious culture clashes at every turn. When Vicky and Joe unintentionally find themselves chicken farmers, Vicky says:
"Oh, Please! Our Spanish neighbours already thought we were insane, sitting on the yellow sofa gazing at our flock, letting them hop onto our laps, talking to them."
Whether saved by a mule or sitting at a party table in the middle of the road celebrating a neighbour's birthday (and blocking traffic), CHICKENS ... not only paints a warm, humorous and colourful picture of rural Spain, but also tells of how two zany Brits came to fit right in. Light-hearted and full of sunshine. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

Chickens, Mules and Two Old Fools Overview

If Joe and Vicky had known what relocating to a tiny mountain village in Andalucia would be like, they might have hesitated... They have no idea of the culture shock in store. No idea they'll become reluctant chicken farmers and own the most dangerous cockerel in Spain. No idea they'll help capture a vulture or be rescued by a mule. Will they stay, or return to the relative sanity of England?Awarded the HarperCollins Authonomy 'Gold Star'.The Telegraph-- "a colourful glimpse of Andalucían life. And a psychopathic chicken or two...charming...funny"

Jack: A book about a dog where the dog doesn't die at the end Review

Let me first establish that I do not own a dog and do not usually read books about dogs.. I stopped reading books about animals years ago because too many of them end with the animal dying. Therefore, I really like the title of the book. The book is funny and thought provoking. I enjoyed pretending that a dog can talk and getting the dog's perspective on the TG. I hope this is the beginning of a series of humor books by Ray Braswell and Jack, of course.

Jack: A book about a dog where the dog doesn't die at the end Overview

A dog (Jack) and his person (The Tall Guy) decide to write a book, mostly about the dog. But don't worry, no dogs die at the end of THIS book! (Unlike some other books about yellow Labs)Aren't you tired of reading books about vampires? Wouldn't a book about a zombie puppy be more interesting? Yeah, I thought so too. I guess I'll have to work on that for the next book. In the meantime, here's a book about a dog named Jack.

I Am Maru Review

I'm a big Maru fan, so I was excited when the English version of the first Maru book came out. It's not a bad book, but three distinct things disappointed me about it:
1) It's small. For some reason I was expecting something a little bigger, like maybe a coffee table book. This is like a handbook.
2) LOTS of repeat content from the popular web clips. I was expecting more original photographs.
3) Not a big surprise that there is repeat content from the web clips, but the content that is repeated, as well as most of the pictures in the book, appear grainy and from a lower resolution source than a normal book you'd find in a bookstore - makes the book seem cheap.
In its defense, it wasn't overpriced and I feel like I got what I paid. I would recommend it only to dedicated Maru fans, who will delight at anything that has to do with this cat. Those that are on the fence or aren't that familiar with him should avoid.
