In the Garden of Disgrace (The Garden Series Book 3) Review

This is the third & final installment of Wicklund's In the Garden series, and I loved every minute of it. This story lacks the intensity of the first book, as this is a well-executed story of redemption instead.
Lady Jillian is engaged, but she can't deny her best friend who wants to watch a duel incognito. She goes along but somehow finds herself in the get-away carriage of Adrian St. John, Earl of Wickham, (or "Lord Wicked," as he's known to the ton) who flees the scene when he accidentally kills his opponent. Jillian is finally returned home two days later after Adrian escapes to France, but though nothing happened, the damage to her reputation has been done. Jilted by her fiance, she retires to the country to live out her days as a fallen woman.
Eight years later, Adrian returns to England to find Jillian's brother demanding that he marry her to restore her reputatation. He's willing, but Jillian is of another mind altogether. And so an enthralling story commences.
This was a wonderful book! Wicklund is an amazing author, and I wish she had more available. Again she offers an interesting & entertaining story with characters one can't help but love.
I adore Jillian & loved reading about all of her quirks & effective bird-flipping at society's expectations. She figures her reputation was ruined when she didn't do anything wrong, so now she does exactly what she wants, when she wants.
Adrian is an exciting hero, and one can't help but root for him to win Jillian's hand. The passion between the two characters is intense, & it's amusing to see Adrian meet his match in a woman who's willing to buck convention even more than he is.
Add Jillian's aging Aunt Prudence into the mix, along with Jillian's older brother, Simon Fitzgerald, Marquess of Sutherfield (read his story in book 2 of the series, In the Garden of Seduction (The Garden Series)), their cousin Philip, Jillian's ex-fiance, & Jillian's "best friend," and the supporting cast is fleshed out nicely while helping move the story along at an appropriate pace.
I'm preparing to re-read this book as I type (I bought & read it 2 mos ago), and I find myself excited over the prospect. This is a great read & certainly price-worthy. Read it! I think you'll agree.
This is the third book in the series:
1 - In the Garden of Temptation (The Garden Series)
2 - In the Garden of Seduction (The Garden Series)
4 - In the Garden of Deceit (coming Summer 2011!)

In the Garden of Disgrace (The Garden Series Book 3) Overview

When 17-year-old Lady Jillian Fitzgerald sneaks out to spy on a duel, she believes she is merely guilty of an indiscretion. But when the duel takes a deadly turn and Jillian becomes an unwilling passenger in the fleeing carriage of the infamous "Lord Wicked," she knows what began as a lark has become a disaster. One night of bad judgment and her life is changed forever.

A Summer Folly Review

I really thought this book was adorable.. It reminded me of the Jane Austen classic, Persuasion. The chemistry between the couple was top-notch, and I found myself smiling throughout. I was really rooting for them! I read Mary Kingsley's zebra romances in the past, and I am happy to find some of them available for kindle. I hope this author continues to write enjoyable regency romances!

A Summer Folly Overview

An Alluring Widow...When the dashedly handsome Duke of Tremont summoned Anne Templeton home to England, the lovely young widow left Jamaica with a wary sigh. Seven years before, as a foolish green girl, she had jilted Giles Templeton in favor of his cousin. Now she was forced to face the man she'd so grievously wounded...and so dearly loved. The worst of it was, she loved Giles still. But he was so frightfully proper now, with nothing boyish or trusting in his cool, gray eyes. He was undoubtedly in need of a woman's care-and this summer at the seaside, Anne meant to see he had it!...A Proper Gentleman...It had seemed a simple enough thing to do, taking charge of his late cousin's affairs. Giles was, after all, the head of the family. But as soon as he looked into Anne's vibrant blue eyes, he knew there was nothing simple about his feelings for her. More beautiful than ever, she was just the sort of woman who would turn a man's well-ordered life upside down. Well, he was beyond that sort of thing. After their summer at Brighton, he could say goodbye to Anne...but not before giving her a taste of what she'd missed!...And Love That Never DiedAnne's mischievous young son, a prankster of a ghost, and Giles's stubborn mother conspire to make life difficult. But when summer's over, will Anne and Giles find that what seems like folly is very wise, indeed?"Bringing an added depth and texture to her richly drawn characters, Ms. Kingsley proves herself to be an author of considerable merit who is not afraid to spread her wings and fly." Romantic Times, 4 1/2 stars

Barely Proper Review

Here's what I enjoy most about Regency romances written by Shannon Donnelly: she always takes the time to develop her characters, their relationships and the various settings. And with "Barely Proper" these three strengths melds together to give a somewhat much used plot premise a wonderful new lease on life.
Terence Winslow has always been a scapegrace, in and out of trouble either because of his gambling or his womanizing. So it should have come as no surprise to him that he's now been challenged to a duel by Lord Dunscombe for his affair with Lady Dunscombe. Except that when he arrives at the agreed upon spot, he finds that Dunscombe's been shot in the back. The next thing he knows, Terence is facing a charge of murder. Unable to believe his infernal luck, Terence knows that he has to somehow discover who really murdered Dunscombe before charges are formally placed against him. Fortunately for him, his neighbour and friend, Sylvain, is at hand, willing to help. Sylvain knows full well exactly what Terence is capable of, and shooting someone in the back is definitely not one of them. And she's determined to help Terence clear his name. But Sylvain has also long nursed a secret love for her neighbour. And she cannot help but fear what will happen if Terence guesses her secret...
"Barely Proper" rounds off the trilogy that focuses on the Harwood sisters and the Winslow brothers. All three novels feature stories that are not really startlingly new; on the other hand all three novels make for worthwhile reading because of the manner in which Shannon Donnelly tells her tales. In "Proper Conduct" the manner in which the authour draws into the shabby genteel world of the three Harwood sisters who are on the verge of spinsterhood because of their father's folly -- the relationship between the sisters and how each sister's character has been shaped by their circumstances -- was what made reading "Proper Conduct" such fun. Ms Donnelly did the same with "Proper Mistress" -- only this time she drew us into the world of the Winslow brothers, showing us how life with a perpetually angry and judgemental father had made the two brothers rather wild, and how the younger Winslow brother (Theo) is able to change thanks to love and acceptance of his "improper" fiancee. With "Barely Proper" she does for Terence what she did for Theo in "Proper Mistress" -- allowing for Terence to redeem his character and to become to individual he was meant to be. Discovering who the actual murderer was and exonerating himself of the murder charge was only incidental to the main focus of this novel which was all about how Sylvain and Terence act on the feelings they have for each other and how Terence changes most of his scapegrace ways.
With an intelligent story, engaging characters and a good prose style, "Barely Proper" turned out to be a truly enjoyable read.

Shattered Dreams Review

I am a little torn with this review - between 3 ½ and 4 stars.
Lady Elyssa Prescott has a limp from a childhood accident and is painfully aware of her `imperfection' thanks to the reaction of `society'. Her siblings are fiercely protective of her and want her to be happy. Her sisters create a correspondence romance, realise it is a mistake and then Elyssa's brother Harrison decides to distract her by inviting someone to charm her for a 2-week party at their country estate.
He calls upon an old school friend with a reputation for the ladies, Brentan Montgomery, Earl of Charfield and offers him a foal from one of his Arabian horses for simply escorting his sister socially - warning him to keep proper distance.
Before the ploy can even begin Brent meets Elyssa out riding and is enthralled by her. She is an outstanding rider and shares his love of horses. His attraction is genuine and he truly sees her wonderful qualities. For the first time in her life, she is made to feel desired and attractive. However, the agreement with her brother hangs in the air above them like a hatchet waiting to fall.
Alongside the development of their story, there is a parallel story of Harrison and Lady Cassandra. They meet again after 4 years, following a terrible scandal and betrayal, only to realise that they were unwilling pawns in a game and so much time has been lost. Real danger now puts all of their lives at stake.
I liked the story and very much liked the 2 main characters, but the secondary plot could have been a story in its own right.
Overall a good read, but not quite up there for a 5 star rating.

Shattered Dreams Overview

Brentan Montgomery, Earl of Charfield has one love - his stable of Arabian horses. When he is offered breeding rights to the Marquess of Fellingsdown's prize Arabian, El Solidar, if for two weeks he acts as companion to Fellingsdown's sister, he doesn't care if the reclusive Lady Elyssa has three chins and a dozen hairy moles, the prize at the end is worth anything he has to endure. But when he meets the elusive Lady Elyssa Prescott, all thoughts of gaining a prize Arabian colt disappear. He realizes he's met the woman of his dreams - if only he can keep her from discovering the deceit that brought them together and convince her that her imperfections don't matter to him. Lady Elyssa Prescott knows what it's like to be ridiculed and shunned. But when Brent Montgomery lets her glimpse a world where her limitations aren't important, she believes it's possible for her dreams to become a reality. Until she discovers the man with whom she's fallen in love was ‘hired' to offer her everything she's always dreamed of having. The cruel reality of a love built on deceit shatters both their dreams and threatens to destroy their lives forever.

An Unsuitable Wife Review

Mary Kingsley weaves together a clever tale of how two good people can be kept apart by their own assumptions and insecurities. Meanwhile, unfriendly forces trying to work against the couple end up providing the stress needed to ultimately force them together in order to fight a common enemy. Very enjoyable.

An Unsuitable Wife Overview

After a scandalous encounter at a country inn, Justin, Earl of Chatleigh, and Miss Melissa Selby are forced to make an unsuitable match. Justin, facing an uncertain future, believes he has been trapped into marriage by a scheming miss. Melissa, running from a dangerous past, fears she has gotten herself into even deeper trouble. It is not the best way to begin a marriage. Matters become even worse when it becomes apparent that someone is threatening Justin's life. It will take all Melissa's courage and strength to protect her husband - and to win his love. "Ms. Kingsley develops a strong plot with attractive characters and just the right touch of sensuality." - Rave Reviews, 1991, 4 stars

Lord of Scoundrels Review

It's a rare book that can sustain an average 5 star rating over 56 reviews (at least as of this writing)! This is one of those books that I'd heard about for years and seen in lots of favourites and Desert Island Keepers lists. It had been on my TBR shelf for several months and now I'm wondering what took me so long to read it - I loved it!
This really is the ultimate rake reformed story. Though I did not enjoy reading about Sebastian's unhappy childhood and torturous years at Eton, it had to be endured for the reader to understand the man he became. Seemingly without conscience, a man who uses people, considers women either bothersome (ladies) or sex objects (prostitutes), drinker, gambler and uncaring bad influence on younger, impressionable and less wealthy hangers-on. And one such hanger-on is Jessica Trent's idiot of a younger brother Bertie who is quickly going through the family's money in an effort to fit in and keep up with the infamous Marquess of Dain. Jessica and her grandmother have traveled to Paris determined to reclaim Bertie from Dain's destructive influence. But when Jessica actually meets Dain, she is frustrated and annoyed to discover that she is extremely attracted to the devil. What a bother! But she is still determined to extricate Bertie and forces a confrontation that he cannot ignore!
Upon meeting the delectable Miss Trent, Dain is no less attracted to Jessica and no more pleased about it. He's avoided society ladies for most of his adult life (ever since one tried to lure him into marriage for his money) and the only women he spends time with are prostitutes. But Jessica has quickly gotten under his skin and when they have several very public encounters that can only be described as scandalously inappropriate he is determined not to be brought to the altar. But he underestimates Jessica's need for justice and eventually gives in. If it's marriage to Lord Beelzebub she wants, so be it!
Of course neither expects much from this marriage, but both are pleasantly surprised. Jessica seems unflappable handling everything Dain throws her way with calm efficiency and confidence. Dain can't help but be impressed. And Dain slowly reveals himself to be quite human after all. So how can Jessica help but fall for him? But does this mean smooth sailing for this couple? Not likely!
I really enjoyed reading this book. I did not care for Dain at the start, but by the end I really liked him a lot. Especially in his dealings with his illegitimate son. Conversely I really like Jessica throughout. She's tough as nails, determined, witty and nothing gets her down. Actually, as others have pointed out, she may border on too perfect! A highly recommended read!

Lord of Scoundrels Overview

They call him many names, but Angelic isn't one of them . . .

Sebastian Ballister, the notorious Marquess of Dain, is big, bad, and dangerous to know. No respectable woman would have anything to do with the "Bane and Blight of the Ballisters"-and he wants nothing to do with respectable women. He's determined to continue doing what he does best-sin and sin again-and all that's going swimmingly, thank you . . . until the day a shop door opens and she walks in.

She's too intelligent to fall for the worst man in the world . . .

Jessica Trent is a determined young woman, and she's going to drag her imbecile brother off the road to ruin, no matter what it takes. If saving him-and with him, her family and future-means taking on the devil himself, she won't back down. The trouble is, the devil in question is so shockingly irresistible, and the person who needs the most saving is-herself!

A Matter of Choice Review

It is so very reassuring to know that authors like Laura Landon will continue to bring beautiful, original stories to those of us who love English Regencies and Victorians. In A MATTER OF CHOICE, Allie and Joshua battle their very powerful magnetism for one another, certain that giving in to it would be a betrayal of every promise they've ever made to themselves. But in giving in, they fuel the fury of a man who would rather see them dead than happy. This is a great read, a great story, a great love.

A Matter of Choice Overview

Joshua Camden, Marquess of Montfort, will do everything in his power to save his precious Graystone Manor - even take a wife he doesn't want. But he isn't prepared for the one demand the woman who holds the power to save his precious Graystone makes - that he remain faithful forever. Lady Allison Townsend would rather go to her grave a spinster than marry a man who embarrasses her with his string of mistresses. But when she's given no choice but to marry one of London's most well-known rakes and womanizers, she refuses to go to the altar without a stipulation of her own - that the man she marries never share his bed with another woman. But neither Allison nor Joshua is prepared for the dangers they're forced to face and the choices they're forced to make to protect their happiness - as well as their hearts.

Her Gift, The Duchess (The Duke's Debauchery, 1 - Regency Erotica) Review

this is one of the best erotic short stories i have read in a long time..two thumbs up! or smething else up i you know what i mean...haha

Her Gift, The Duchess (The Duke's Debauchery, 1 - Regency Erotica) Overview

Charlotte, a recent widow, sets out to find the perfect man with whom she can have a single night of pleasure. Little does she know, however, that the man knows more about what she needs than she does. Charlotte is surprised to find a maid named Mary in the duke's chambers, but Mary is more than she seems when she sets out to seduce Charlotte. This is not a full length novel. It's a short, erotic tale that includes a man as a side character, rather than a hero. The duchess, on the other hand....Excerpt:When they came to what she assumed was the duke's chambers, he stopped, opened the door and stepped to the side. “Mary will be along to assist you," he said.“Assist me with what?" Charlotte asked as she stepped into the room. Instead of answering, he closed the door. She wanted to run after him. To bring him back. He obviously knew more than Charlotte did. Charlotte laid her forehead against the door with a heavy thump and muttered, “What do I do now?"“I believe he means for you to dress," a silky voice called from the corner of the room. Charlotte spun quickly, relieved and not relieved all at the same time to find a young woman standing in the corner beside a steaming tub of water. The full bath rested before a crackling fire. “His Grace sent me for your pleasure," she said with a smile. Charlotte stopped short. She didn't look like a servant. She looked like a lady. One of odd circumstance, but still a lady. “You are Mary?"The lady laughed, a soft sound that moved across Charlotte's skin like satin. “May I help you disrobe?"“May I ask what your position within the household is?" Charlotte squeaked. “I am not a member of the household staff," she said, shaking her head. Her silky blonde curls danced across her shoulders. “I am here for your pleasure." She had a voice like a siren and a smile that could sink ships. All gracing the most perfectly proportioned figure.“Yes, you mentioned pleasure," Charlotte murmured. “Do you also attend to the duke's pleasure?" She pretended to pluck at an errant string on her sleeve. The words sounded waspish even to her own ears. A tinkling little laugh was the lady's response. “Do you really want to know the answer to that?"Did she? Probably not.
