Summer Storm Review

I loved this book. I'm an adult reader who loves YA and found it refreshing to find a well-written "realistic" YA title-- I feel like the genre as a whole has a wealth of talented writers right now but so much of their work tends to fall in the dystopian/fantasy/paranormal categories. As I read, I found myself caught up in Annie's worry over her cousin and felt the tension mount as the days and hours ticked by-- very psychologically distressing and thrilling. The book itself is a quick read and I plowed through it in one sitting-- it would make a great book for a day at the pool or beach.

The Trouble With Love (Texas One Night Stands) Review

Having read and greatly enjoyed Ms. Reeves' novel, Just One Look, I was looking forward to picking up a copy of her newest book. I was not disappointed. Although The Trouble With Love is laced with humor and sensuality, it's also a poignant tale of forgiveness and redemption and knowing when to let go. Our heroine finds her happily ever after, but not before she faces the ghosts of her past and accepts the future that can be hers. Do yourself a favor; download a copy. You won't be disappointed either.

Bridesmaid Lotto (McMaster the Disaster) Review

Oh how I loved this book! There are very few books that I have read cover to cover in one sitting, and this was one of them (others being all books from Sarah Addison Allen and maybe a Harry Potter or two or three). The book hooks you right away!
Thanks to a meddling mother, the main character ends up in a situation she swears she doesn't want to be in, but is secretly excited about the prospect of meeting her long time crush, movie star Jake Hall! The main character's image of herself is not matched by anyone who knows her, as they see her as beautiful, smart, and kind. She sees herself as a disaster and uses her "disasters" (laugh out loud funny stories about her most embarrassing moments) to keep her grounded during an experience that could give her a "big head". Josie (the main character) struggles to see herself as anything other than Josie McMaster the Disaster, but eventually finds that her "disasters" just make more likable.
The dialog between the characters is wonderful. In order for me to really enjoy a book, it must have great dialog and wonderful characters. This book has both. Josie's comments and inner thoughts are hysterical!
This book is laugh out loud funny - I'm still laughing - and it has the sweetest love story. I won't ruin it by telling you more. This book is like reading all the favorite parts of your favorite chic flicks combined in a wonderfully original story! I will warn you though, that the end leaves you hanging and wanting for more! I will wait patiently for the sequel!!

Bridesmaid Lotto (McMaster the Disaster) Overview

Book 1 in the McMaster the Disaster series.Josephine McMaster is pretty and smart, but very much a klutzy mess. Finally, at 26, she may have actually lost the dreaded ‘McMaster the Disaster' nickname that has followed her around her whole life. Josie's quite content to be single, much to her mother's disappointment. So when a bizarre contest is announced where a socialite is holding a lottery to pick her bridesmaids (and rake in a little extra cash), she can't roll her eyes fast enough, even if it does mean meeting Jake Hall, her one and only movie star crush. Obviously, Josie doesn't enter the bridesmaid lottery, so you can imagine her surprise when her picture pops up among the winners, thanks to Mom. With a little prodding -- okay bribing -- Josie agrees to participate. The wedding turns into the event of the year, and Josie finds herself in the middle of a paparazzi feeding frenzy, which gets even crazier after Jake Hall takes a special interest in her. Can Josie handle the pressure in the spotlight? Is it possible she might really have a chance with Jake Hall? And if she's busy worrying about all that, how in the heck is she going to keep ‘McMaster the Disaster' from showing up in front of the entire world?Book length: Approx. 66,000 words (approx. 260 pages).

Not Telling Review

I heartily enjoyed this latest book from Cindy Vine. I always like to read Cindy's books. Last time I read The Case of Billy B and I couldn't put it down. Overall the novel Not Telling is very good and easy to read. The story is quite emotional and will have you gripping the edge of your seat. You'll want to read on to find out if Jenny tells her sister or not. I have no words to explain how thought-provoking the story is. I think the reader must read each and everything of the novel and you'll find yourself dwelling on the dilemma. Thinking about it when you should be sleeping. Given the circumstances, would you tell your sister what happened? I recommended this novel to all my friends. It's a book you can read more than once. I highly promote this new novel to all my readers

Not Telling Overview

Burnt Mountain Review

NOTE: I received a free review copy of this book from the publisher.
I have been a fan of author Anne Rivers Siddons for some time now. Although I was raised on the east coast myself, her sweeping southern novels have way of drawing me into their rich, lush context, particularly in her generational sagas such as Peachtree Road and Colony. Plus, Siddons never fails to feature stories of deep, aching romance and invariably tragic consequences--a captivating combination.
At first, BURNT MOUNTAIN seemed to be of a similar tradition to my favorite Siddons works, and it definitely drew me in. The main character is Thayer Wentworth, whose first nine years, growing up on the outskirts of Atlanta, were fairly idyllic: her beloved father is the headmaster of a boys' school that his family founded, and the Wentworths live just off the school's grounds, it a beautiful Greek Revival house along the river. But the death of her father was the earliest tragedy to shape Thayer, followed by a devastating first love affair, and eventually, the relationship which forms the heart of the book and changes Thayer's life forever.
Overall, I did enjoy this novel; as mentioned above, I like Siddons' writing style--it can be a bit melodramatic, but reading one of her books always feels familiar and comforting. On the other hand, I also had several problems with this novel. During the period that Thayer is growing up (i.e., her adolescent and high school years), various references suggest that the story takes place in the 1950s or 60s. However, just a few years later, when Thayer is married (which occurs immediately after her graduation from college), the time is definitely the mid-1990s, as Atlanta is preparing to host the Summer Olympics. Not only does this seem incongruous with the earlier part of the story, but also Siddons includes additional references which don't fit for that time frame (e.g., there is a preponderance of cell phones in the story, which weren't so prevalent in the mid-90s). Finally, Thayer's growing dissatisfaction with her husband, Aengus, never quite feels right. Siddons seems to over-emphasize the point that in the times that Thayer and Aengus still spend together, everything is great, wonderful--if so, does Thayer really have cause to be so massively unhappy?
In the end, I would NOT recommend this book to those who have never read Siddons before, as this is not the best example of her work; instead, I would suggest trying one of the earlier novels that I referenced above. However, if you are already a fan of Siddons like myself and are willing to overlook some flaws in favor of just sinking into Siddons' writing, then you may still enjoy this latest foray into Siddons' southern world.

Burnt Mountain Overview

From one of our most acclaimed writers comes this dramatic tale of a well-born Southern woman whose life is forever changed by the betrayal of her mother and by the man she loves Growing up, the only place tomboy Thayer Wentworth felt at home was at her summer camp - Camp Sherwood Forest in the North Carolina Mountains. It was there that she came alive and where she met Nick Abrams, her first love...and first heartbreak. Years later, Thayer marries Aengus, an Irish professor, and they move into her deceased grandmother's house in Atlanta, only miles from Camp Edgewood on Burnt Mountain where her father died years ago in a car accident. There, Aengus and Thayer lead quiet and happy lives until Aengus is invited up to the camp to tell old Irish tales to the campers. As Aengus spends less time at home and becomes more distant, Thayer must confront dark secrets-about her mother, her first love, and, most devastating of all, her husband.

Take the Monkeys and Run (A Barbara Marr Murder Mystery) Review

A soccer mom with three children and a just-moved-out spouse discovers monkeys in her yard, a head in unpleasant condition in the house next door, and more excitement that a soccer mom in a pleasant neighborhood should expect. There's an ex-boyfriend PI, a policeman who looks like Brad Pitt, and a really obnoxious mother. Oh, and the mafia might be involved. And somehow, it kind of makes sense.
This was very entertaining and a quick read. I really liked Barb, and I hope to read more about her and her adventures.
