Always Been Mine (The Moreno Brothers 2) Review

When I was reading reviews for this book, I wanted to know how it compared to Forever Mine (The Moreno Brothers 1). Here are my thoughts....
This book was definitely more "steamy." It's for mature teens or adults. I loved it.
There were more twists in this book that were action based, so you get more of a variety.
The ending is better in my opinion... you have a better understanding of what will happen next.
This book was more relatable. It has a bunch of different perspectives.
I felt the need to scream at the characters more in this book; the author does a great job of showing perspective.
Although I ABSOLUTELY LOVED Forever Mine, this book appealed to me more. Both are five stars. (: I hope they help you. Buy this book. It's totally worth it.(:

American Vampire (Vampire for Hire #3) Review

It wasn't a short book but it was so good I couldn't put it down and now I have to wait for the next one. It seems like I waited forever for this book to come out, but i read it in one sitting. I loved the book though and cant wait to read the next one and find out what happens with Sam and Fang.

American Vampire (Vampire for Hire #3) Overview

American Vampire - the third book of the Vampire for Hire Series...Mother, wife, private investigator...vampire. Six years ago federal agent Samantha Moon was the perfect wife and mother, your typical soccer mom with the minivan and suburban home. Then the unthinkable happens, an attack that changes her life forever. And forever is a very long time for a vampire. Now in AMERICAN VAMPIRE, sequel to VAMPIRE MOON, private investigator Samantha Moon receives a heartbreaking phone call from a very unlikely source: a five-year-old girl who's been missing for three months. Now on the hunt, Samantha will use her considerable resources - including her growing supernatural abilities - to locate the missing girl before it's too late. And as she gets closer and closer to the horrible truth, she receives devastating news on the home front. Now with her world turned upside down, Samantha Moon is forced to make the ultimate choice of life and death. And through it all, she discovers the identity of one mysterious man...a man she has grown to love.**Acclaim for the Novels of J.R. Rain**"Gripping, adventurous, and romantic - J.R. Rain's The Lost Ark is a breakneck thriller that traces the thread of history from Biblical stories to current-day headlines. Be prepared to lose sleep!"-JAMES ROLLINS, international bestselling author of The Devil Colony"I enjoyed this immensely. The protagonist, Samantha Moon, is a female vampire with a husband and children. Those predate her condition; six years ago she was attacked by a vampire and rendered into one. Now she's trying to carry on with family and private eye business, and she's a feisty, skilled person, so is doing mostly okay. It is not a horror story; she buys animal blood to eat and doesn't generally prey on humans. But her husband has an increasing problem with her coldness - not of spirit, but of body. 'You sicken me and scare the hell out of me,' he tells her. 'And when I touch you it's all I can do to not gag.' She replies, 'Words every wife wants to hear.' I love this! What makes it special are her character and nature."-PIERS ANTHONY, New York Times bestselling author of Trail Mix: Amoeba"Dark Horse is one of the best books I've read in a long time! A great classic detective story with a modern twist. Unique and interesting characters (I think I'm half in love with Jim Knighthorse now!), a great plot that kept me guessing until the end, and some of the funniest lines I've read anywhere."-GEMMA HALLIDAY, bestselling author of Deadly Cool"Impossible to put down. J.R. Rain's Moon Dance is a fabulous urban fantasy."-APRIL VINE, author of Intrigue In India"Moon Dance is absolutely brilliant!"-LISA TENZIN-DOLMA, author of Understanding the Planetary Myths"J.R. Rain is the new modern master of vampires."-H.T. NIGHT, bestselling author of The Werewolf Whisperer "I love Jim Knighthorse! Please write faster, Mr. Rain!"-ELAINE BABICH, #1 bestselling Kindle author of Falling Down"Moon Dance is a must read. If you like Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum, bounty hunter, be prepared to love J. R. Rain's Samantha Moon, vampire private investigator."-EVE PALUDAN, author of Letters from David"I totally loved The Body Departed. As someone who communicates with those who are either earthbound or have crossed over - your descriptions and interpretations of the dialogue and circumstances could not have been written more accurately."-JULIE BELMONT, author of The Path to Personal Success and Freedom"I thoroughly enjoyed The Vampire With the Dragon Tattoo from one of my favorite authors. Good Girls Don't (Donovan Family) Review

Coming off a string of Mary Poppins heroines ("practically perfect in every way"), it was refreshing to read about a young woman who made mistakes. Some BIG ones! Some writers would have presented Tessa in a way that made me hate her, but Dahl made me like Tessa and empathize with her even when I wanted to shake her. Several times in this book, I felt like shouting, "No, don't do it!" as one does watching characters in horror movies. But I understood the character's insecurity enough that I believed she would make those bad choices.
From the beginning of the book, I liked the hero. Luke is a good guy, taking heat for things that other people think he did wrong; I really admired him for keeping his mouth shut when defending his reputation would potentially make someone else look bad. (Okay, the fact that those secrets make him a little bit dark and brooding was also hot.)
The best thing about this book, something I see a lot in Dahl's work, is that the characters grow, and they do it because of each other. That makes for great romance. Watching Tessa learn from her bad choices, neither quickly nor easily, was terrific. I have known people who lie to protect themselves and others, who do stupid things to try and preserve family harmony, and who have a very hard time trusting other people to handle the truth and stick out the tough times. Those are behavior patterns that aren't easily broken, so it rang absolutely true to me that Tessa kept digging herself in deeper rather than reforming too quickly.
The sibling dynamic in this book is fun, which set up the rest of the trilogy in a way that didn't feel forced or artificial. There is a nice overall plot-and-character arc within the family that works out over all three books, and it's the kind of complex family drama that shouldn't be too easy to fix. I really liked how this first book got so far and no further in that respect; it's more believable to me that established family dysfunction doesn't get fixed by the introduction of one wise outsider and a couple of honest conversations.
My reaction makes the book sound heavy, and there are definitely some big emotions at work here, but there are also moments in the book that are laugh-out-loud funny. Dahl has a real knack for situational humor, especially where sex is involved, and she makes effective use of the comic potential generated by a sexually active woman with two over-protective and somewhat clueless older brothers. That made this a well-rounded and enjoyable read for me.

Good Girls Don't (Donovan Family) Overview

Too much of a good thing...With her long ponytail and sparkling green eyes, Tessa Donovan looks more like the girl next door than a businesswoman—or a heartbreaker. Which may explain why Detective Luke Asher barely notices her when he arrives to investigate a break–in at her family's brewery. He's got his own problems—starting with the fact that his partner, Simone, is pregnant and everyone thinks he's the father.Tessa has her hands full, too. Her brother's playboy ways may be threatening the business, and the tension could tear her tight–knit family apart. In fact, the only thing that could unite the Donovan boys is seeing a man come after their "baby" sister. Especially a man like Luke Asher. But Tessa sees past the rumors to the man beneath. He's not who people think he is—and neither is she.

Snapped Review

I first met Jonah and Sophie in Unforgivable and there was some definite sparks there so I couldn't wait to read their story. I was also very intrigued by the school shooting premise. The whole time I was reading, I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next--I wasn't sure where the author will take the story especially after the shooter shot himself in chapter three. But take it she did and after the highly charged beginning, I was at the edge of my seat the whole entire time.
The characters (main and secondary) were fantastic. But the character that stood out for me was Sophie who was very smart, stubborn and independent. Usually, stubborn and independent heroines tend to irritate me because most knowingly put themselves into stupid situations. Not Sophie. Danger seemed to find her. This girl went through a lot--from being being abducted in Unforgivable to being caught in the middle of a school shooting to realizing that someone was trying to kill her (after she was ran off a cliff and narrowly escaping her car in which the villain had planted a bomb). I knew and understood where she was coming from and why she did what she did. Jonah was great as well and he had his own issues, mainly fighting his intense attraction to Sophie who was convinced that the shooter may have an accomplice. He knew what Sophie had gone through and he didn't want to take advantage of her. She was also a key witness in his case. There is a reason why Ms. Griffin is my go-to author for romantic suspense and it's because she can write a darn good romance amid all the action and suspense--she balances the suspense and the romance so well. There was great chemistry between Sophie and Jonah. They were both fighting their feelings for each other for most of the book but when they finally got together, it's genuine and worth the anticipation on my part.
I guess my only complaint was that I felt I didn't get to "know" the villain. I felt he wasn't as sinister as I like my villains to be and he wasn't as well-developed as the shooter. Characters from previous Tracer series books make an appearance (like Ric and Mia from Unforgivable) which I like because you get an update on what they have been doing. New characters were also introduced like workaholic, rookie detective Allison Doyle and I hope she'll have her own book in the future.
Ms. Griffin takes you on a ride filled with twists and turns that will have you guessing until the end. Snapped is a gripping, action-packed, suspenseful and romantic read you won't be able to put down.
4.5 out of 5 stars

Snapped Overview

SOPHIE BARRETT THINKS SHE'S LUCKY TO BE ALIVE. SHE MAY BE DEAD WRONG. On a sweltering summer afternoon, Sophie Barrett walks into a nightmare. A sniper has opened fire on a college campus. When the carnage is over, three people-plus the shooter-are dead and dozens more are injured. Sophie escapes virtually unscathed. Yet as details emerge from the investigation, she becomes convinced that this wasn't the random, senseless act it appeared to be. No one wants to believe her-not the cops, not her colleagues at the Delphi Center crime lab, and definitely not Jonah Macon, the homicide detective who's already saved her life once. Jonah has all kinds of reasons for hoping Sophie is mistaken. Involving himself with a key witness could derail an already messy investigation, not to mention jeopardize his career. But Sophie is as determined and fearless as she is sexy. If he can't resist her, he can at least swear to protect her. Because if Sophie is right, she's made herself the target of a killer without a conscience. And the real terror is only just beginning. . . .

People on the list are getting killed, the toll is getting higher and more is at stake that then could ever have imagined. It's left up to Ashley to remember details of the accident something that will change her life forever.
Wow!!!!
I must say this romantic thriller, was filled with twists and turns at every corner. I was intrigued from beginning to end with this read, and at one stage I felt like a crazed reader, flickering through 100 miles per hour just to find out whom, what, where and why!!!
A suspenseful thriller- romance that will leave you bewildered, guessing and wandering who the killer was, and why. An unpredictable plot by any means, suspense that will leave you gasping, unexpected events that will bring tears to your eyes; make you fume at events that take place, and also making the plot both intriguing and memorable. Chapters flowed smoothly, the plot was fast paced, and kept the reader interested throughout from beginning to end. I felt not a thing was missed or rushed...
Slow burn was filled with luscious sensual love scenes, that not only with have your toes curling, eyelashes fluttering, but your heart racing like a bird in flight. Moments where you will find yourself grinning with amusement at the funny antics between the characters, and moments where your heart is being played like a marionette and scenes where you want to just jump into the book.
The main characters were well developed, Ron - was charming and flirtatious, a successul business man, rich, cocky, and hot to trot, yet also has his own vunerabilites, this showed the reader he was not that perfect hot firefighter- playboy and that he also had issues he had to deal with. Loving and caring and sexy an idealistic hero for all. A tortured soul to a certain extent.
Ashley was hot headed in what she believed in and independent, caring and considerate, but also I enjoyed her straight forward character, she liked the truth and believed to give it at all costs. She was passionate about her work and the ones she loved, determined to do what it took to keep the ones she loved out of danger. Not a character I would consider stuck up or snotty but down to earth and very realistic.
The blazing attraction between Ron and Ashley was mesmerizing, tantalizing and passionate. Sex scenes were sensual and loving, electrifying- if you make call it, yet at times also dreamy and transient. Their love was portrayed, tastefully and emotionally giving a good insight to their feelings. Both the good and the bad moments. The descriptions in this story were Fluent, expressive and rhythmic well above defined, there is nothing quite like reading a book and being able to envisage scenery, scents and smells. I am one for great descriptions and this book does not disappoint.
Secondary characters all blended in well, nothing missed out and even the villains were portrayed as noxious, and demented. Definitely incalculable. Making you dislike the character. Ednah defined this well. The other characters, loyal and faithful, and heartfelt. I enjoyed all the characters in Slow Burn, each and every one unique and necessary for the plot to unwind.
Overall, I must say, I had Goosebumps by the end, Held my breath and hoped for the best .... I am a dramatic reader, but you know when you have read a good book when it pulls at your emotions and when the end is done ... you sigh! And breathe... I'm sure I held my breath last few chapters.
A capricious read !!!! I'm sure you will enjoy.
Look forward to reading more of the Fitzgerald series.

Happily Never After Review

Set in the world of her Night Huntress series, this story was originally published in the Weddings from Hell anthology (this review is reincarnated and slightly revamped from my review of that book).
Happily Never After is not a Cat and Bones short, although it has several brief pop-ins by Bones, but do not let that stop you. The hero, vampire Chance, is one of Bone's compadres, and is an almost as luscious. As a favor to his sire Bones, Chance steps in to save the lovely Isabella from a coerced marriage to a would-be B-movie type mafia boss and Chance finds himself attracted to her with an intensity he's never felt before in his very long life. Isabella and Chance are every bit as good as Bones and Cat, Frost does great heroes and competent intelligent heroines well. This was fun addition to the Night Huntress world, but I did have one nit - trying to pull Bones into the story felt forced and a bit hokey to me - I think that Chance could have managed nicely on his own.

Happily Never After Overview

Isabella Spaga is about to reluctantly walk down the aisle with Mr. Dangerously Wrong...but not if dashing vampire Chance has anything to say about it. As a favor to Bones, Chance has come to derail this wedding of beauty to the beast. Now if only he can keep his hands off the bride. From New York Times bestselling author Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress world, it's the wedding of the season...that everyone wants to miss. (Originally appeared in Weddings From Hell anthology)

Born To Die (Selena Alvarez/Regan Pescoli Novels) Review

Lisa Jackson's newest book Born to Die was just as good as I had could have imagined. The main character Kacey was so fascinating and had so much depth and character to her. I really felt compelled to her and wanted to see her kept safe. I found myself getting lost in the story and finished it all in a weekend. I have always enjoyed the town of Grizzly Falls in Montana and all of it's unique characters. What a great idea to have this series of books happen in such a small and remote town. It makes it that much more bone chilling to think it could happen anywhere and to anyone. I've always been a fan of the Alvarez/ Pescoli team. What a dynamic female duo! After the last book Chosen to Die I almost feel like I'm right along the two ladies helping to solve all these cases! With the body count rising I never knew who to suspect and who was innocent. Lisa Jackson did it again! The To Die Series has fast become my favorite set of books!

Born To Die (Selena Alvarez/Regan Pescoli Novels) Overview

Appearances'A sad, strange coincidence'that's Dr. Kacey Lambert's initial response to the deaths of two women who bear an uncanny resemblance to herself. It's not like there was any real connection between Kacey and the B-movie actress or the elementary school teacher. But Detective Selena Alvarez suspects otherwise. Can Be'One of the bodies contained traces of poison at the time of death. Selena and her partner, Detective Regan Pescoli, can find no motive for murder. But Kacey has started to notice ties between the dead women's lives and her own-all close in age, born within miles of each other. And all have links to Trace O'Halleran, the man Kacey just started dating. Deadly'The deeper Kacey digs, the more reason she has to fear. More look-alikes are dying, and the killer is getting bolder and more brutal. And Kacey knows it's only a matter of time before hers is the next name on a list of those who were born to die'

Death by Honeymoon (Book #1 in the Caribbean Murder Series) Review

The story opens with Cindy trying to deal with the devastating loss of her husband, who died on their honeymoon in Barbados. Cindy's loss is even more devastating in the face of the obstacles she and Clint had to overcome to get married (his family did not approve, to put it mildly) and her extremely small support system (even though a lot of people came to visit in the days right after Clint's death, the only person looking out for Cindy was her sister, Ann.) It's an extremely somber opening. It becomes clear pretty quickly that there's something rotten on the island of Barbados, as Clint's repugnant family makes very clear when they come to allegedly pay their condolences and end up interrogating Cindy (Clint's widow, remember) instead. Cindy's sister Ann is doing her best to help but comes across as kind of a bossy boots (I feel like if I were Cindy, every person that tried to tell me what I need or what would be best for me would just start getting punched in the face.) Everyone wants to help but you can practically hear Cindy screaming inside to just get people to back off.Anyway, Cindy has a lot of reasons for her Spidey senses to be tingling, although no one else seems to feel the same. Just when Cindy finally caves and begins to attempt to put her life back together for the sake of other people who love her, it becomes alarmingly clear that her feeling that Clint's death wasn't an accident was right on the money. Now she has to decide whether it would be better to just remember Clint in her heart forever and ride quietly into the sunset, or to try to uncover the truth, however ugly it may be.Because this is a relatively short story it has to get down to business fairly quickly, and there isn't a lot of time or space to devote to side stories or ancillary characters. The plot is lean and streamlined, and we arrive at point B from point A fairly quickly. We as readers can piece together the game that's afoot pretty quickly; watching Cindy figure it out and overcome the obstacles that have been put in her way is a different experience. The ending, too, and the resolution of the story, require you to buy into the story as a reader. Would people necessarily behave that way in real life? Probably not, but that's the great thing about fiction. The author has created an environment where everything comes out in the wash and the stage is set for book 2, and that's okay by me.

Death by Honeymoon (Book #1 in the Caribbean Murder Series) Overview

On the rugged, wild, eastern shore of Barbados, Cindy and Clint are enjoying their dream honeymoon, when paradise quickly turns into hell. Cindy finds her newly beloved taken away from her, drowned in a freak accident in the ocean. The local police are quick to declare it an accident, to insist that he was caught in a sudden riptide. But Cindy, left all alone, is not convinced.Cindy must return to her and Clint's now-empty home in New York and face her in-laws, who never wanted Clint to marry her, and who did everything to make her engagement and wedding hell. She must deal with all of these women's backbiting, gossiping and unspoken accusations, while she tries to get a handle on her own grief and to get clear on what really happened to Clint.Cindy is mailed an anonymous photo of a woman she had never met, addressed to Clint. As she tries to unravel the mysterious package, as she begins to dig deeper into Clint's emails and files, she realizes how many secrets Clint had been hiding from his past. She realizes that she didn't really know the man she loved. And she also realizes that Clint was murdered. She digs deeper, into the depths of Clint's massive corporation, DGB oil, and as she starts to unearth information she shouldn't, she goes too far. Soon her own life is in peril. On the run, she realizes that the only way to get answers, and to save her own life, is to return to where it all began: Barbados. As she heads into the dark underside of the island, into the heart of the local villages, she is shocked to discover what really happened to her husband on their honeymoon. But by then, it may already be too late.

The Ideal Man Review

I am a huge Julie Garwood fan and have read every one of her novels. Saving Grace is my absolute favorite and I have read it multiple times. I was really disappointed in this book. It took me a long time to get into it and put it down several times. Normally I can't put down a Garwood novel and read it cover to cover forgoing sleep when necessary. The conversations were choppy and the amount of detail detracted from the story because it just didn't flow. It read like an amateur novelist during the conversations. I did like the characters a lot and wish that I could have enjoyed their dialogue more because they had merit. It was also such a contrived and convoluted plot that had elements that were not essential to the story and should have been left out. Some of the relationships were poorly developed and not resolved, especially the relationship between Ellie and her evil sister, Ava. I kept waiting for Ava to "get it" or at least get what she deserved but then it just kind of fizzled out. I wasn't able to really lose myself in the book and then it wrapped up with a few quick lines. All of this being said, I would still rather read a bad Julie Garwood book than a good book by many other authors. This is definitely not worth the $12.99 kindle price and I would wait until it drops below $9 to purchase.

The Ideal Man Overview

Don't Say A Word Review

Radio disc jockey Julia DeMarco's fiance, Michael, is pressuring her to set a wedding date. Julia's mom died six months ago, her younger sister, Liz, moved in with her and her step-dad is drinking. None of them seem to be coping very well and Julia's reluctance to commit is understandable.
But when Julia sees a famous photo taken 25 years ago of a Soviet orphan girl, she thinks *she* might be that girl, which means her concept of who she is will be altered.
Julia begins investigating by finding Alex Manning, the son of the photographer. The photographer died 25 years ago. As a free lancer, Alex has followed in his father's footsteps. Julia and Alex work together to solve the mystery.
Interesting premise and good plot with some surprising twists. Julia and Alex are smart and mature. Liz was a spoiled brat and Michael was a pushy, controlling jerk - not likeable characters. If there's to be a sequel about them, I'm not interested. Ignore them and this story will hold your attention.

Absolute Liability (A Southern Fraud Thriller) Review

I love Jennifer Becton's work, so when I heard she had a mystery out, I bought it immediately for my holiday reading. Mysteries are hit or miss with me--more often than not, the supposedly quirky heroine is only annoying or daft. Cozy mysteries leave me wanting a little more edge, and thrillers keep me up at night. The plot is either way too predictable or the ending is such a surprise that it doesn't make sense looking back. Despite all this, I trusted Becton to navigate the perilous waters to deliver a worthy tale. She did not disappoint.
Julia Jackson's story grabbed me from the opening paragraph. Julia is an insurance fraud investigator who ran out for a cup of coffee. On the way back to the office, she learns she's been abducted. The mystery then focuses on who wanted to abduct Julia, with a suspect list pulled from her current cases. Her employer, the Georgia Department of Insurance, assigns her a partner to finish those pending investigations.
I have to agree with a previous reviewer. Mark Vincent is hot. He's a reserve Naval enlisted man whose specialty is personal defense. Since it doesn't take a genius to see that Julia was obviously the intended target of the abduction, Mark's presence makes sense. The two of them work well together, and there's also a fair amount of chemistry.
Or maybe it was just hot in there--after all, Absolute Liability is set in the South during summer. Becton's setting details were as exquisite as they were subtle. I could feel the heat without being told it was hot. I actually wanted my own glass of sweet tea to cool myself down.
So how did Absolute Liability stack up against my list of typical complaints?
1) Julia was a fantastic heroine. The story is told in first person, which allows the reader to learn things about her that she doesn't actually share with anyone. Her background and her dysfunctional family go a long way to establishing who she is, so it was important to learn that upfront. Beyond that, she's clever without being a know-it-all, funny without being slapstick, and flawed without being annoying.
2) I wouldn't classify this as a cozy, but it also wasn't a heart-racing thriller. There was definitely an undercurrent of danger--our heroine was the target from the first page. Somehow though Becton managed to convey that element of suspense without making me double check my locks before I went to bed.
3) The solution to this case was twofold. I figured out one half on my own, but the second was an absolute shock. After I thought about it for a moment, it made perfect sense. It also solidified my hunch regarding the other half... which did turn out to be correct. That's the perfect blend of logical solution and suspenseful whodunit.
Absolute Liability was the best mystery I've read in ages. I'm so glad it's the first of a series.

A Thousand Tomorrows & Just Beyond The Clouds Omnibus Review

I've never read a Karen Kingsbury book that I didn't like. The heart she puts in the development of her characters has always touched me and I don't believe I've ever read one of her books without shedding some tears. "A Thousand Tomorrows" certainly was no different. However what I did notice was different about this novel was the abscence of reference to scripture. In previous books scripture tended to be threaded througout the entire book. This just wasn't the case in this novel. Again, I certainly still enjoyed the book a great deal and read it in one sitting because as usual, Karen's characters drew me in and gripped my heart. There just seem to be a change in this book from her previous books. With that said, I learned that Karen's books don't have to meantion specific scripture to teach us all lessons about the love of God. Incredible author.

ABDUCTED Review

New author took me by surprise with this thriller. Lizzy and her boyfriend are together for the last night before he leaves for college. She's snuck out to be with him and she has him let her off down the block from home so her dad won't find out. As a result Lizzy, is one of the teenage girls kidnapped and tortured by a serial killer but escapes after a few months. Fast forward 10 years, the serial killer returns and is out to get Lizzy - the one that got away. Lizzy`s high school boyfriend is now an FBI agent and Lizzy is practicing as a PI and an instructor teaching high school girls how to defend themselves. Lizzy has loads of mental and emotional problems and is still struggling to overcome the terror she experienced at the hands of the killer. She and Jared both have tons of guilt issues over it all.
Let me tell you the serial killer is just downright creepy. The guy's nicknamed "Spiderman" for a reason. This book labeled as a romantic suspense is heavy on the thriller/suspense and very, very light on the romance. Jared and Lizzy's story is still a good one as they try to reconnect after everything that's happened in the last 10 years. Lizzy's character develops slowly as the story moves along and there are times I wondered if she'd ever be able to move forward. The torture scenes are graphically detailed which intensifies the creep factor. The side characters are realistic and I was amazed at how Lizzy, Jared and Spiderman's family dynamics twist and turn. The story is nicely woven together for a terrific ending. The story keeps you guessing and on the edge of your seat the entire time. Totally engrossing and a terrific read.

A Killing Tide (Columbia River Thriller) Review

Many times, a writer's first novel is good, but can have inconsistencies that are hopefully addressed as the author matures in his or her craft. Maybe one of the characters is underdeveloped. Or a weird glitch in the plot happens that doesn't make sense. Or too much backstory might be crammed into the present tense.
Fortunately for her readers, P.J. Alderman's first novel, A Killing Tide, doesn't suffer first-time jitters. In this suspense novel with a strong romantic subplot, Alderman introduces diverse characters, mixes them up with plots upon subplots, and sets it all against the backdrop of small-town Astoria, Oregon. Better still, she makes it work.
The book's heroine Kaz Jorgenson is a woman who, despite her plushy job as a consultant to Fortune 500 companies in San Francisco, has salt water running through her veins and the love of the ocean in her heart. When Kaz is called home to Astoria to help brother Gary Jorgenson with hot water he's drowning in, she stumbles into more than she'd bargained for. Like . . . a family friend murdered. Like . . . one of her family's trawlers set on fire to cover the dirty deed. Like . . . her brother disappearing and becoming the number-one suspect in the case.
Enter Michael Chapman from Boston who is Astoria's new fire chief and a trained arson investigator to boot. While trying to solve the murder-arson-disappearing brother mystery, he becomes attracted to Kaz. But Michael doesn't want to get involved with Kaz because she's the number-one suspect's sister. And Kaz doesn't want to get involved with Michael because she thinks he's out to bust her brother.
But the book is about more than the hero and heroine playing cat-and-mouse with one another while they sort out their emotions. Michael and Kaz's growing relationship fits seamlessly into the overall whole, making this not a love story with a plot stuck around it for fun, but an intense mystery in which two people are trying to find the truth about a murder, and love develops as a consequence.
Another plus are Alderman's highly likeable characters. Michael is a flawed, tortured hero, but the reader isn't constantly beaten over the head with it. Michael acts like a normal individual who is working through his trauma, rather than someone who constantly descends into sackcloth and ashes for what he did in the past. And Kaz is a strong woman with a good heart who carries her own share of guilt. But again, Alderman achieves balance with her. She isn't some impossible heroine fulfilling some impossible ideal. She's a flesh-and-blood person who -- surprise! -- stumbles occasionally.
Adding to the richness of the novel are the secondary characters. Kaz's best friend Lucy is extremely well-defined; and this writer hopes Alderman will consider a sequel with her in it. Bjorn and Chuck, two of Gary's staunchest allies, are also wonderfully developed and almost strong enough to carry the book on their own. Even Zeke, Michael's German Shepherd, has a winning personality and charm to add a few humorous moments to an otherwise intense story.
In short, Alderman has done very well with this debut novel. If the adage is true that there's nowhere to go but up, her next effort should be well-anticipated and just as strong.

Borrowed Time Review

This books starts with a bang and keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout. It's about a cop and a doctor with some unusual characteristics. Both are people to care about and root for, and there are plenty of problems along the way. The violence is fast and fits the story, nothing gratuitous to my mind. I really enjoyed this book and recommend it.

Come Unto These Yellow Sands Review

I enjoy Josh Lanyon's writing: he always tells an engaging story with wit and charm with a special ability to create characters we enjoy. But Come Unto These Yellow Sands really is Lanyon 2.0. This book works on so many levels. It's beautifully written and intelligent; Lanyon makes five words do the work of dozens. Main characters are carefully drawn and engaging: nothing about them is "canned" or cliche. Other reviewers have described the story with more eloquence than I could muster, but it's as honed as the craft of the book. It's all wave and no flotsam.
I found it an enormously satisfying read, but the best reason for buying it is that I suspect it will re-read even better.

Come Unto These Yellow Sands Overview

Sometimes the adventure chooses you. Lover of fine poetry and lousy choose-your-own-adventure novels, Professor Sebastian Swift was once the bad-boy darling of the literati. The only lines he does these days are Browning, Frost and Cummings. Even his relationship with the hot, handsome Wolfe Neck Police Chief Max Prescott is healthy. When one of his most talented students comes to him bruised and begging for help, Swift hands over the keys to his Orson Island cabin-only to find out that the boy's father is dead and the police are suspicious. In an instant, the stable life Swift has built for himself hangs on finding the boy and convincing him to give himself up before Max figures out Swift's involvement in the case. Max enjoys splitting an infinitive or two with his favorite nutty professor, but he's not much for sonnets or Shakespeare. He likes being lied to even less. Yet his instincts-and his heart-tell him his lover is being played. Max can forgive lies and deception, but a dangerous enemy may not stop until Swift is heading up his own dead poet's society. Warning: The Surgeon General has determined that Josh Lanyon's smart, sexy, sophisticated stories may prove hazardous to your heart.

Take the Monkeys and Run (A Barbara Marr Murder Mystery) Review

A soccer mom with three children and a just-moved-out spouse discovers monkeys in her yard, a head in unpleasant condition in the house next door, and more excitement that a soccer mom in a pleasant neighborhood should expect. There's an ex-boyfriend PI, a policeman who looks like Brad Pitt, and a really obnoxious mother. Oh, and the mafia might be involved. And somehow, it kind of makes sense.
This was very entertaining and a quick read. I really liked Barb, and I hope to read more about her and her adventures.
