Good Girls Don't (Donovan Family) Review

Coming off a string of Mary Poppins heroines ("practically perfect in every way"), it was refreshing to read about a young woman who made mistakes. Some BIG ones! Some writers would have presented Tessa in a way that made me hate her, but Dahl made me like Tessa and empathize with her even when I wanted to shake her. Several times in this book, I felt like shouting, "No, don't do it!" as one does watching characters in horror movies. But I understood the character's insecurity enough that I believed she would make those bad choices.
From the beginning of the book, I liked the hero. Luke is a good guy, taking heat for things that other people think he did wrong; I really admired him for keeping his mouth shut when defending his reputation would potentially make someone else look bad. (Okay, the fact that those secrets make him a little bit dark and brooding was also hot.)
The best thing about this book, something I see a lot in Dahl's work, is that the characters grow, and they do it because of each other. That makes for great romance. Watching Tessa learn from her bad choices, neither quickly nor easily, was terrific. I have known people who lie to protect themselves and others, who do stupid things to try and preserve family harmony, and who have a very hard time trusting other people to handle the truth and stick out the tough times. Those are behavior patterns that aren't easily broken, so it rang absolutely true to me that Tessa kept digging herself in deeper rather than reforming too quickly.
The sibling dynamic in this book is fun, which set up the rest of the trilogy in a way that didn't feel forced or artificial. There is a nice overall plot-and-character arc within the family that works out over all three books, and it's the kind of complex family drama that shouldn't be too easy to fix. I really liked how this first book got so far and no further in that respect; it's more believable to me that established family dysfunction doesn't get fixed by the introduction of one wise outsider and a couple of honest conversations.
My reaction makes the book sound heavy, and there are definitely some big emotions at work here, but there are also moments in the book that are laugh-out-loud funny. Dahl has a real knack for situational humor, especially where sex is involved, and she makes effective use of the comic potential generated by a sexually active woman with two over-protective and somewhat clueless older brothers. That made this a well-rounded and enjoyable read for me.

Good Girls Don't (Donovan Family) Overview

Too much of a good thing...With her long ponytail and sparkling green eyes, Tessa Donovan looks more like the girl next door than a businesswoman—or a heartbreaker. Which may explain why Detective Luke Asher barely notices her when he arrives to investigate a break–in at her family's brewery. He's got his own problems—starting with the fact that his partner, Simone, is pregnant and everyone thinks he's the father.Tessa has her hands full, too. Her brother's playboy ways may be threatening the business, and the tension could tear her tight–knit family apart. In fact, the only thing that could unite the Donovan boys is seeing a man come after their "baby" sister. Especially a man like Luke Asher. But Tessa sees past the rumors to the man beneath. He's not who people think he is—and neither is she.

Daniel's Gift Review

Unknowingly to me, there were tears flowing down my cheeks as I held my breath reading rapidly in order to learn if Danny lives or dies. The unique gift Danny brings to his mother, Jen, who has raised him since birth without alerting Danny's biological father, Luke, of Danny's existence, is VERY touching. Having children on the brink of teenage years myself and not knowing how they really feel, was accurately depicted in Freethy's development of Danny, a teenage boy who goes in search of his father. Upon returning to his mother from his first glimpse of his father's lavish life, Danny is hit by a car and slips into a coma. The tragedy brings his mother and father face to face. Luke, thinking the baby, Danny, had been aborted, is astonished to learn that he has a son. The devotion and love Jen has for her son makes Luke realize the loss he will have if he isn't given the opportunity to know Danny and re-acquaint himself with his soul-mate, Jen. I am now on a mission to read other books by Barbara Freethy.

Don't Say A Word Review

Radio disc jockey Julia DeMarco's fiance, Michael, is pressuring her to set a wedding date. Julia's mom died six months ago, her younger sister, Liz, moved in with her and her step-dad is drinking. None of them seem to be coping very well and Julia's reluctance to commit is understandable.
But when Julia sees a famous photo taken 25 years ago of a Soviet orphan girl, she thinks *she* might be that girl, which means her concept of who she is will be altered.
Julia begins investigating by finding Alex Manning, the son of the photographer. The photographer died 25 years ago. As a free lancer, Alex has followed in his father's footsteps. Julia and Alex work together to solve the mystery.
Interesting premise and good plot with some surprising twists. Julia and Alex are smart and mature. Liz was a spoiled brat and Michael was a pushy, controlling jerk - not likeable characters. If there's to be a sequel about them, I'm not interested. Ignore them and this story will hold your attention.

1105 Yakima Street (Cedar Cove) Review

I read the first six books and than I forgot about them. I still enjoy the characters and am sorry I missed a few in between. So next I will read the last book in the series.
Rachel has left her husband of less than a year of marriage. She is pregnant and the fighting of her step daughter and her husband not wanting to jump in just wanted peace. Rachel had to leave for her health and the babys. She keeps loosing weight instead of gaining weight. Her blood pressure is way high.
Rachel had a good relationship with Jolene for years before she married Bruce. Jolene was jealous and glad that Rachel moved out and doesn't want her dad to have anything to do with her.
Rachel has no where to go and her old boyfriend said he was renting a room in a house and thier was one extra the owner was at sea at the moment. Nate said, "He had a girl friend so she did not have to worry about him wanting to get back with her. So Rachel moved into with Nate her room was on main floor and the other bedrooms where upstairs.
Bruce dosen't know where and who she is living with in fact no one does. Bruce is trying to get Rachel back and tries to talk at the salon but Jolene and friends show up and start yelling. Rachel boss does not like it. Finaly rachel gets a job where Bruce had no idea where she lives or works, she has blocked his cell phone number so he cant even call her.
Bruce finally goes to counsling when Rachel first wanted to go.
It also tells about whats going on in a lot of familar characters of past books and what they are up too.
It was good to read it all again. I was given this ebook in exchange for honest review.

1105 Yakima Street (Cedar Cove) Overview

Dear Reader,You've probably heard that my wife has left me. Rachel's pregnant, and she says she can't handle the stress in our household anymore. My thirteen–year–old daughter, Jolene, is jealous of her. Maybe it's my fault. As a widower I spoiled her—Jolene was reading over my shoulder just now and says that's not true. She claims Rachel ruined everything. But that's not true. The real question is: How can I get my wife back? I don't even know where she is. She's not with Teri Polgar or any of her other friends from the salon. The other question is...when will Jolene grow up and stop acting like such a brat?Of course, I'm not the only one in town with problems. Linc Wyse's father–in–law is trying to destroy his business. And you know Charlotte Rhodes? Seems she's becoming forgetful, and the family's worried about her and Ben. Lots of other stuff going on—but Rachel is better at keeping up with it than I am.If you have any idea where my wife is, give me a call. Please.
