Breaking Free (SEAL TEAM Heartbreakers) Review

This is probably the best researched and most realistic thriller involving Special Forces personnel that I have read. The characters, their relationship's and the situations they find themselves in are all too real. As well as great suspense and a plot that keeps you interested, the main focus is on the bitter-sweet romance between Zoe and Adam that again manages to retain realism. The suspense is built up slowly to a great climax and I couldn't put this down. Definitely one I would recommend and I think that there is just about enough action and appeal in `Hawk's' character to keep the male contingent happy.

When I was reading reviews for this book, I wanted to know how it compared to Forever Mine (The Moreno Brothers 1). Here are my thoughts....
This book was definitely more "steamy." It's for mature teens or adults. I loved it.
There were more twists in this book that were action based, so you get more of a variety.
The ending is better in my opinion... you have a better understanding of what will happen next.
This book was more relatable. It has a bunch of different perspectives.
I felt the need to scream at the characters more in this book; the author does a great job of showing perspective.
Although I ABSOLUTELY LOVED Forever Mine, this book appealed to me more. Both are five stars. (: I hope they help you. Buy this book. It's totally worth it.(:

Good Girls Don't (Donovan Family) Review

Coming off a string of Mary Poppins heroines ("practically perfect in every way"), it was refreshing to read about a young woman who made mistakes. Some BIG ones! Some writers would have presented Tessa in a way that made me hate her, but Dahl made me like Tessa and empathize with her even when I wanted to shake her. Several times in this book, I felt like shouting, "No, don't do it!" as one does watching characters in horror movies. But I understood the character's insecurity enough that I believed she would make those bad choices.
From the beginning of the book, I liked the hero. Luke is a good guy, taking heat for things that other people think he did wrong; I really admired him for keeping his mouth shut when defending his reputation would potentially make someone else look bad. (Okay, the fact that those secrets make him a little bit dark and brooding was also hot.)
The best thing about this book, something I see a lot in Dahl's work, is that the characters grow, and they do it because of each other. That makes for great romance. Watching Tessa learn from her bad choices, neither quickly nor easily, was terrific. I have known people who lie to protect themselves and others, who do stupid things to try and preserve family harmony, and who have a very hard time trusting other people to handle the truth and stick out the tough times. Those are behavior patterns that aren't easily broken, so it rang absolutely true to me that Tessa kept digging herself in deeper rather than reforming too quickly.
The sibling dynamic in this book is fun, which set up the rest of the trilogy in a way that didn't feel forced or artificial. There is a nice overall plot-and-character arc within the family that works out over all three books, and it's the kind of complex family drama that shouldn't be too easy to fix. I really liked how this first book got so far and no further in that respect; it's more believable to me that established family dysfunction doesn't get fixed by the introduction of one wise outsider and a couple of honest conversations.
My reaction makes the book sound heavy, and there are definitely some big emotions at work here, but there are also moments in the book that are laugh-out-loud funny. Dahl has a real knack for situational humor, especially where sex is involved, and she makes effective use of the comic potential generated by a sexually active woman with two over-protective and somewhat clueless older brothers. That made this a well-rounded and enjoyable read for me.

I LOVE Mari Carr and Jayne Rylon books so when I saw they started a series together I knew it was for me. Southern Comfort was a perfect addition to Northern Exposure. The web chat scene between the brothers was priceless so I'm really glad they duplicated it from Seth's point of view. Jody is a sassy headstrong girl with a love for 4 letter cuss words. Seth is dominant and loyal. They agrue and clash but it works for them. I like the humor sprinkled throughout the book. Paul was a great friend and I was glad to see he got a good ending. I can't wait for Eastern Ambition!

In Bed with a Highlander Review

I don't know about you, but I'm starting to think that if you've read one highland romance you've read them all. I'm not knocking on Ms. Banks in particular, because she writes very well. There's just absolutely nothing new or special here. And I think I've read this same plotline in at least half a dozen romances: A pretty little Scottish heiress, hiding out from an evil chief/laird/lord who wants to force her into marriage to claim her lands, ends up in the hands of a rival, gruff yet good, chief/laird/lord who also wants her lands but likes her, too, and convinces her marriage to him is her best option. The heiress is a virgin and shocked on her wedding night, and therefore the requisite scenes of asking older women for bedroom advice follow. While the heiress learns how to please her man and tries to become mistress of the keep, chief/laird/lord discovers how difficult it is to protect the heiress from any number of dangers she continually walks into, and from the constant threat of evil chief/laird/lord trying to take her away. Stop me if you've heard this one before.
This is by no means a bad book. Ms. Banks' writing is neat and natural, the period detail is good, and the sex is hot. There's just really nothing original about it and I found myself getting bored. We get a little action and excitement toward the end, but overall I wasn't captivated. I've seen lots of glowing reviews for this one, though, and I can't help but think that some of these reviewers haven't read as many highland romances as I have, and thus weren't getting such a feeling of same old, same old. It certainly wouldn't be a bad introduction for someone who wants to try a highland romance. Interestingly, though, I did find that both of our chief/laird/lord's brothers came across as being much more intriguing to read about, and there's a nice set-up in place for book two in this series. I'll probably give it a try in the hopes that it's more entertaining.

I've always found everything about this book engaging. The plot, the dialogue, the characters, the setting all come together for an amazing read. Tanya is probably one of Ms. Lindsey's most likeable heroines. Tough, sassy, brave and completely capable of taking care of herself, Tanya's had to work for a living her entire life. Stefan is a unique hero, with deep emotional scars and he's the perfect compliment for Tanya, who has also suffered greatly in her young life. Together their love story is tender and touching. You'll cheer when they finally get together!
Not only are the main characters some of the best in Ms. Lindsey's outstanding career, the secondary characters in the form of Stefan's personal guard are all intriguing, highly likeable men. You'll be thrilled to know that his cousin Vasili gets a story of his own (the sequel to this book, _You Belong To Me_) and you'll wish, as I do, that Ms. Lindsey would continue the story of Cardinia with the stories of Serge and Lazar.
I've been a fan of Ms. Lindsey's work for over a decade. I've read each of her books numerous times and still savor each book like it's brand new. In fact, most of Ms. Lindsey's work is some of my all-time favorites in this genre. Such is the case with _Once A Princess_, the classic fairy-tale story of Tanya Dobbs, a European princess turned Mississippi barmaid and Stefan Barany, the arrogant king who wins her heart.

Hearts Aflame Review

While I'll admit that "Hearts Aflame" is not great literature, it is a fun romp in the medieval romance style and I stayed up half the night finishing it.
I loved the character of the heroine, Kristen Haardrad, a spirited Viking girl who stows away on her brother's ship and ends up being taken captive by Saxons when the Viking raiding party is ambushed. My favorite part of the book was the beginning when the Vikings are trying to hide the fact that Kristen is a woman from their captors. She is discovered (of course) by the virilely handsome Saxon lord, Royce of Wyndhurst, a man who, unfortunately for Kristen, saw his family murdered and his beloved fiance raped and murdered by Viking raiders five years previously.

Royce is a decent-enough hero (although he has the usual "medieval romance hero" attitude toward women--i.e. women as sex objects to be used at will) and this grates on modern sensibilities. Kristen is definitely a fiesty heroine and not afraid to go after what she wants and I did like her for those things. I was disappointed that she fell so *quickly* for the man who was enslaving her and became his mistress. It seemed a bit out of character for a girl who was so *very* proud and raised in a strong family such as hers. And she is *definitely* not the poster girl for the "No Means No" campaign against coercive sex. (I'll admit, I am not a big fan of that kind of raped-but-still-enjoyed-it sex scene that was so popular in the 1980's.)
The book has alot of action and Kristin is one heck of a tough heroine (I loved the part when she goes after Royce's cousin with a knife!) My book did *not* have Fabio on the cover, but it is certainly a "Fabio-on-the-cover" kind of book, albeit a really fun one!
Recommended for readers who like medieval romance (with warnings to those who are offended by the "woman as love slave" plotline.)

Pricks and Pragmatism Review

I've read my fair share of gay romance, and while a lot of it has been good and well written, I've never felt the urge to comment before this. "Pricks and Pragmatism" is funny, skillfully designed and written, and very emotionally engaging. I actually felt like I could see what was described.
Most gay romances are all about sex; to the point that they're basically porn. This book, while it doesn't dismiss sex, doesn't go on and on about it so you can actually enjoy the fantastic story that goes with it. Then there are the characters. The way they come alive in this novel is breathtaking! I especially love the way the main character describes things. He made me laugh so hard I woke my family from the other room.
All in all, I love this book, want more like it, and after I finish this review I am definitely taking a look at JL Merrow's other works. : D

The Zillionaire Vampire Cowboy's Secret Werewolf Babies Review

With such a crazy title as, The Zillionaire Vampire Cowboy's Secret Werewolf Babies, I wasn't sure how I was supposed to take the book seriously. Well, you aren't supposed to! The authors actually have a warning in the book letting the reader know it's a parody and not to be taken too seriously. Once I read that, I decided to just sit back and enjoy. I'm glad I did. I was already laughing before I got through the first paragraph. With character names like Rock Fangsworthy, Buffi Van Pelt, Billy Bob Bobson, and Chastity Feelsgood you just know you're in for a wild story.
Even with the hilarious names, and the fact each chapter was written by a different author, the story wasn't all fluff. The entire book flowed well from author to author and never went beyond a level of silliness that made it painful to read. Rock and Buffi's storyline had depth and even being presented in a comedic way kept me reading to make sure they got their HEA.
If you're looking for a good story to lighten your mood and make you laugh out loud, then you need to pick up The Zillionaire Vampire Cowboy's Secret Werewolf Babies! You'll love the way these characters interact with each other. Who wouldn't want to be serenaded with KISS' "I Wanna Rock N Roll All Night" by a drunk, sexy vampire named Rock Fangsworthy?
