I Am Number Four (Lorien Legacies) Review

Man, this book is seriously garnering heaps of exposure, what with its already having been optioned for a movie, this movie scheduled for a 2011 release. I AM NUMBER FOUR, which admittedly is an awesome title, is penned by someone named Pittacus Lore, who claims to be a ten thousand year old space alien seeking to warn us of hostile other aliens currently lurking in our midst. This is cute. Except that two folks named Jobie Hughes and James Frey are the actual authors.
The high stakes premise goes like this: Nine alien children have fled their annihilated homeworld of Lorien and have sought refuge on Earth. Having scattered to the winds, they are being hunted down, one by one, by a separate and malevolent extraterrestrial race from a dying planet. Thanks to a quasi-mystical protective charm placed on the Nine, they can only be killed in order (although, my bet is that Number One doesn't regard this charm as all that "protective"). As the book opens, three of the Nine have already been tracked down and murdered. So we come to Number Four.
His name used to be Daniel Jones. It used to be something else before that, and then something else before that, and so on. Ten years on Earth, ten years of hiding and staying always on the move and staying safe and alive... this is the life of Number Four and his guardian and mentor whose name is Henri (oddly, Henri's alien accent sounds very much like a French accent). Number Four has just collected a new scar circling his right ankle, this an indicator that another of the Nine has been recently slain. Three scarred rings around his ankle, and so Number Four knows he's next. And it's time to pack up the bags again, time again to get the eff out of Dodge.
Henri and Number Four - or "John Smith," his new assumed name - have always gravitated to tiny towns, conjecturing that their hunters would stick out more like sore thumbs in tiny towns. They end up in Paradise, Ohio. For John it's another try at blending in in school but without making friends, because no one can be trusted. Except that it's a little different this time. John Smith befriends a geeky kid who is a science-fiction enthusiast. He adopts a stray mutt named Bernie Kosar (and Bernie Kosar, by the way, is easily the book's breakout character). And John Smith also meets a girl. So much for staying on one's guard.
My first impression, while reading the first few pages of this book, was that this whole thing is very reminiscent of two short-lived television sci-fi shows: THE POWERS OF MATTHEW STAR from the early '80s and, more recently, ROSWELL. But then, pressing on, I guess it's inevitable that comparisons to the X-Men would surface. The Nine teens are holing up while waiting for their superhuman powers (called Legacies) to develop. These Legacies vary, and there's no guessing as to which abilities a Nine would latch up to. Number Four is at that age when his Legacies would shortly begin to crop up. And they do start cropping up, one by one, and there is a really fun factor in watching our sympathetic alien boy try to cope with each incoming talent.
Gratifyingly, the alien hunters from Mogadore aren't only downright intimidating, they seem even more powerful than the Nine and their guardians (and the guardians aren't at all equipped with superpowers). This drives up the suspense. What I AM NUMBER FOUR has going for it is its irresistible sci-fi/superhero premise and a pace that really moves. Number Four is a likable protagonist, although someone needs to explain to him the exact definition of keeping a low profile. After all, dude is supposed to be in hiding and fitting in. He really doesn't do much of either. None of the supporting cast break out of their stereotypical mold, and only the scene-stealing dog Bernie Kosar seems to be an original character. I will say that John's geeky pal Sam does come up with a touching reason for why he's such a sci-fi freak and why he wears those fugly prescription glasses. And as much as I dig Sarah, her and John Smith's teen romance feels like any other teen romance in YA lit. It comes in a nice, predictable package. Sarah is gorgeous and nice... and, well, bland. Another issue I have concerns a high school bully whose turnaround comes too abruptly. Perhaps the most intriguing element in the book concerns the mystery surrounding the very peculiar Bernie Kosar (see how I keep coming back to the dog?).
I AM NUMBER FOUR is the first book in a planned six-book series, and it reads very visual, especially in the explosive action sequences, and no wonder this is being made into a movie. Number Four performs bits of astounding derring-do throughout the book, but things get really amped up during the final 90 pages. It all culminates in one of those blistering "Release the Kraken!" Jim Butcher-type paranormal (except it's sci-fi) shoot-'em-outs. I can see why Bay and Spielberg are salivating so.
I liked this book, and will most definitely be thre when the sequels come out. But here's the thing, if you're hanging your hat on something that's on par with the likes of Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games series or even Michael Grant's Gone novels, this won't suit you. I AM NUMBER FOUR isn't as immersing or resonant as those books. THE HUNGER GAMES made me well up in places. GONE reads like LORD OF THE FLIES as co-authored by Rod Serling and Stephen King. I AM NUMBER FOUR had me eating up all the "superhero without a costume" elements, and it's always nice when you can transfer yourself onto a central character who is superstrong and superfast and who won't back down from bullies. I did really like that a surprise character shows up very late in the book, and it looks like she'll be heavily featured in future installments. I'll give this one 4 stars out of 5, because I'm shallow like that and big, bold, f/x-heavy fighty fights never ever fail to transfix me. And because the dog Bernie Kosar is in it.

I couldn't put it down. It moves very quickly. As an ex-Navy person I devoured the depictions on the water. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes suspence. Urban takes us on a hunt for sunken treasure and leaves us satisfied.

Odyssey One Review

Excellent plot, with a refreshingly unique style. With so many cookie cutter writers in the eBook universe now, it's nice to see a new author that doesn't copy his style or technologies en mass from the prevailing popular authors of the military sci-fi genre.
I would recommend this book without reservation, were it not for the annoying and ever-present grammar, punctuation and typographical errors. I realize that I'm only paying $3 for the book, but that doesn't mean that I don't expect a finished product. But as distracting as these things were, the story was an excellent read and kept me hooked until the very end. With the help of an editor, this author will have an awesome career ahead of him.

Odyssey One Overview

The Wayfarer King (The Kinshield Saga) Review

The Wayfarer King (The Kinshield Saga) is the long awaited conclusion to the Kinshield Saga. Gavin has claimed all of the Runestones from the tablet making him the next king. Daia has agreed to be his champion and they must decide what course to follow. Brodas Ravenkind has escaped and poses a threat to everyone that Gavin cares for, but there is also Ritol, the demon, who is responsible for the attacks of the beyonders. In order to defeat the demon Gavin must reconcile himself with his past life as Ronor Kinshield, the champion of King Arek. With the help of Daia and her unique ability as a conduit Gavin's inherited magic becomes much stronger and he is able to see into the past for clues. Brodas is however not done with Gavin or his own goal to sit on the throne. He is planning terrible things for Gavin and company which will only make it more difficult for him to achieve his goals.
This is another fantastic book by K.C. May. I have enjoyed everything of hers that I have read and was extremely excited to get a chance to read The Wayfarer King (The Kinshield Saga). The characters were just as I remembered them with Gavin being an honorable if uncouth man who would give anything to protect those close to him. The story took a bit of a turn that I was not expecting and there was an element of romance introduced as well. As much as I enjoyed the conclusion of the series I am a little sad that there will only be two books. If you have not checked out The Kinshield Legacy (The Kinshield Saga) pick up a copy for start your journey through a wonderful series.
This review is based off of an ARC copy provided by the author.

The Wayfarer King (The Kinshield Saga) Overview

With his new power of Wayfarer, Gavin has the ability to journey to all seven realms. To end the invasion, he must travel to the realm of chaos and summon Ritol. But can he escape before the beyonder champion kills him, devours his soul and takes his place as Wayfarer? If wizard Brodas Ravenkind has his way, Gavin will never make it that far. Not only does Ravenkind want the throne for himself, he wants revenge for his cousin's murder too. After all, he made a promise the first time Gavin crossed him'

Breaking Free (SEAL TEAM Heartbreakers) Review

This is probably the best researched and most realistic thriller involving Special Forces personnel that I have read. The characters, their relationship's and the situations they find themselves in are all too real. As well as great suspense and a plot that keeps you interested, the main focus is on the bitter-sweet romance between Zoe and Adam that again manages to retain realism. The suspense is built up slowly to a great climax and I couldn't put this down. Definitely one I would recommend and I think that there is just about enough action and appeal in `Hawk's' character to keep the male contingent happy.

Breaking Free (SEAL TEAM Heartbreakers) Overview

When LIEUTENANT ADAM “HAWK" YAZZIE rescues ENSIGN BRETT “CUTTER" WEAVER during a mission in Iraq, his faith in his team's loyalty is shaken. Someone in the team attacked Cutter and left him for dead. But who?ZOE WEAVER races to her brother Brett's bedside. He stood by her while she fought her way back from a devastating injury, and she's determined to do the same for him. Though drawn to Hawk's good looks and steady strength, she's reluctant to get involved with a man in uniform. But with Brett lying in a coma, Hawk may prove the key to what happened to her brother.Hawk is torn between loyalty to his men and his need to see justice done. When he tries to save a troubled teammate's career, he unwittingly puts Zoe's life in danger. Can he lead the rest of the team in a rescue operation to save her? Or will one of Hawk's brothers in arms destroy the woman he loves?

Lethal People (A Donovan Creed Novel) Review

This is a novel dealing with a primary character named Donovan Creed. In his primary job, he works for homeland security killing terrorists. Since this doesn't fill all of his time he also tests out torture devices for the military and sometimes does contract killings for the mob. Not necessarily the type of person you think of when you want to have a fun time or a romantic evening. Donovan really is a nice guy though. It is just that his work tends to give him a different outlook on life and this makes him sometimes awkward when dealing with people in "normal" situations.
In Lethal People Donovan gets a call from his daughter who is concerned about the man who is engaged to his ex wife. Donovan finds out the man is a "reformed" wife beater and while investigating him meets a young burn victim whose family died in a house fire. He likes the girl and checks out the fire and finds that it was arson. He figures out why the fire was set and who was responsible and sets out to find justice for all involved.
"Lethal People" by John Locke is a book that shows us that just because you kill people for a living doesn't necessarily make you a bad guy.

Lethal People (A Donovan Creed Novel) Overview

Donovan Creed, a former CIA assassin, is a very tough man with a weakness for very easy women. Meet him in LETHAL PEOPLE a relentlessly entertaining crime novel that's often LOL - bizarre funny! The action is fast and furious, the dialogue smart, savvy and sexy. The story is filled with quirky characters and clever surprises.

WIRED Review

I was blown away by the quality of the writing, the sophistication of the storyline, the depth of the characters, and the break-neck pace of the book. It is once of the best books I have read this summer. With WIRED, I believe that Mr. Richards will give the masters of this genre (mystery/thriller) a run for their money. The book has a little bit for everyone - cutting edge science/science fiction, a bit of philosophy about good vs evil, action galore, and even a little romance. To say the least WIRED is a thriller but it is so much more. If you love mystery/thrillers you must read this book - it is a masterpiece.
Kira, a brillant scientist, has come up with a mechanism to enhance brain functioning and also a mechanism to make immortality a possibility. However, Kira has left a trail of death and destruction in her wake (including parents, teachers, brother, and others). David Desh, formerly in Special Forces, is asked by his former Colonel to find Kira and bring her to justice. In doing so he hires Matt a top notch computer hacker. Before Desh and Matt can get to far, Kira kidnaps them to try to convince them she is innocent and that there is a conspiracy in place to get to her discoveries. Who is telling the truth and who are the good guys/bad guys-you need to read the book to find out.

WIRED Overview

"A keep-you-up-all-night thriller. Intense action, mind-blowing concepts, & breathtaking twists. Enjoy the ride." --Boyd Morrison, bestselling author of THE VAULT.Kira Miller is a brilliant genetic engineer who discovers how to temporarily achieve savant-like capabilities in all areas of thought and creativity. But what if this transcendent level of intelligence brings with it a ruthless megalomania? David Desh left the special forces after his team was brutally butchered in Iran. Now he has been reactivated for one last mission: find Kira Miller, the enigmatic genius behind a bioterror plot that threatens millions. But when Desh learns that the bioterror plot is just the tip of the iceberg, he is thrust into a byzantine maze of deception and intrigue, and he becomes a key player in a deadly game he can't begin to understand. A game that is certain to have a dramatic impact on the future course of human history. . .WIRED is a smart thriller crammed with breakneck action, mind-expanding science, and intriguing concepts readers will be contemplating long after they've read the last page.

The Power of Six (Lorien Legacies) Review

John Smith (Number Four) narrowly escaped the death in Paradise, Ohio. Now, on the run with Sam and Number Six, the trio must find the rest of the remaining six of nine alien survivors in order to fight the impending invasion. Meanwhile, Number Seven is hiding out in Spain, but the Magadorians are closing in. And her protector seems to have turned her back on their past and purpose.
Picking up right after I am Number Four left off, this sequel revolves mainly around two characters: John Smith again and Marina (Number Seven). John, Sam, and Six become closer as they travel across America, which leads to an obvious and awkward love triangle. We get to learn more about Six and her tortured past. And we're also introduced to the young and sheltered Marina, who has been hiding out all over Europe, but has been living in Spain in an orphanage a bit too long. With her protector in denial, Marina doesn't know who she can trust now. But she knows she has to leave as soon as possible.
I thoroughly enjoyed I am Number Four; and was surprised that this second installment was even more intense and action-packed than the first. Filled with shocking twists and surprises around every corner, the story was riveting. With interesting characters that are easy to care about and a complex and engaging story, this science fiction, action thriller for young adults is pure fun and excitement.

The Power of Six (Lorien Legacies) Overview

I've seen him on the news. Followed the stories about what happened in Ohio. John Smith, out there, on the run. To the world, he's a mystery. But to me . . . he's one of us.

Nine of us came here, but sometimes I wonder if time has changed us—if we all still believe in our mission. How can I know? There are six of us left. We're hiding, blending in, avoiding contact with one another . . . but our Legacies are developing, and soon we'll be equipped to fight. Is John Number Four, and is his appearance the sign I've been waiting for? And what about Number Five and Six? Could one of them be the raven-haired girl with the stormy eyes from my dreams? The girl with powers that are beyond anything I could ever imagine? The girl who may be strong enough to bring the six of us together?

They caught Number One in Malaysia.Number Two in England. And Number Three in Kenya. They tried to catch Number Four in Ohio—and failed.

I am Number Seven. One of six still alive.

And I'm ready to fight.

Wearing the Cape Review

I was really surprised by this book, but surprised in a great way. I expected adventure and humor. I got adventure and humor, but there was an amazing amount of gritty realism in this one, too. Right off the bat I knew this was different. It opens with the funny, occasionally snarky, main character getting caught up in a terrorist bombing where her superpowers emerge. If you're expecting a comic book story, that's ruled out right away with deaths and injuries. Hope, the new hero, throws up at the carnage. The heroes are often flawed and perhaps a touch villainous, the villains are sometimes misunderstood or willing to pitch-in in a true disaster. Good people, children, complete innocents are hurt or die. Some people get away with bad things. And through it all, Hope tries to make sense of it all. The book is touching, funny, and I completely enjoyed it.

Wearing the Cape Overview

"I was driving east on the Eisenhower Expressway when the Teatime Anarchist dropped the Ashland Avenue overpass on top of me, using enough C4 to bring the whole southbound span down at once."-------------------------------------------Who wants to be a superhero?Hope did, but she grew out of it. Which made her superhuman breakthrough in the Ashland Bombing, just before starting her freshman year at the University of Chicago, more than a little ironic. And now she has some decisions to make. Given the code-name "Astra" and invited to join the Sentinels, Chicago's premier super-team, will she take up the cape and mask and become a career superhero? Or will she get a handle on her new powers (super-strength has some serious drawbacks) and then get on with her life-plan?In a world where superheroes join unions and have agents, and the strongest and most photogenic ones become literal supercelebrities, the temptation to become a cape is strong. But the price can be high-especially if you're “outed" and lose the shield of your secret identity.Becoming a sidekick puts the decision off for awhile, but Hope's life is further complicated when The Teatime Anarchist, the supervillain responsible for the Ashland Bombing, takes an interest in her. Apparently as Astra, Hope is supposed to save the world. Or at least a significant part of it.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Wearing the Cape was released April 25th, 2011. The first episode of its sequel, Villains Inc., is now also available on Amazon. For more information, check out Marion's blog at marionharmon.wordpress.com.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------REVIEWS"If you love comic-book superheroes, you'll love this."If you hate comic-book superheroes you'll still love this!"The author takes a tired genre graphic-novel superhero concept and transforms it into a very readable, thought-provoking and thoroughly enjoyable book that I cannot recommend highly enough."John Caterham"Superhero fiction is so full of tropes that it's nearly impossible to write something new. Wearing The Cape manages that heroic feat, being both a classic superhero story and a new take on the genre all at the same time."Selia (Portland, OR)
