Pricks and Pragmatism Review

I've read my fair share of gay romance, and while a lot of it has been good and well written, I've never felt the urge to comment before this. "Pricks and Pragmatism" is funny, skillfully designed and written, and very emotionally engaging. I actually felt like I could see what was described.
Most gay romances are all about sex; to the point that they're basically porn. This book, while it doesn't dismiss sex, doesn't go on and on about it so you can actually enjoy the fantastic story that goes with it. Then there are the characters. The way they come alive in this novel is breathtaking! I especially love the way the main character describes things. He made me laugh so hard I woke my family from the other room.
All in all, I love this book, want more like it, and after I finish this review I am definitely taking a look at JL Merrow's other works. : D

Pricks and Pragmatism Overview

Easy come, easy go'until the heart gets involved. English student and aspiring journalist Luke Corbin should be studying. Instead he's facing homelessness, thanks to the lover who's just kicking him out of their posh digs. It's not his first rejection-his father tossed him out at age sixteen-but Luke has no problem trading his favors for a home and security. Especially with rich, powerful, handsome men. Except now, with finals bearing down, there's no time to be choosy. He needs a roof over his head and he needs it now. Even if it means settling temporarily for a geeky, less-than-well-off chemical engineer called Russell. Luke's fully prepared to put out for the guy-because after all, in this world no one gets something for nothing. But Russell isn't just a nerd; he's an honourable nerd who wants to save himself for someone special. At first Luke is annoyed, but the more time he spends with Russell, the closer he comes to a devastating realization. He wants to be that someone special. Except he's fallen for the one man he can't seem to charm'

Draconian Measures Review

At one time there were 50 Draconian warriors serving the Masarian kingdom by order of their Emperor far away on the Draconian home world. As the years passed their numbers slowly dwindled until only Graitaan is left, alone with the knowledge that he can never get home. A harsh and lonely life is something Graitaan knows much about growing up an orphan on the streets until Marind, Captain of the City Guard, gave him a chance to become the honorable man he is.

Currently Graitaan is attached to the only other non-human command in the Masarian army, the magical, empathic, and secretive Finnarians. Tall, pointy eared with brilliant blonde hair the Finnarians are considered deadly beauty on the battle field. These immortals are required to drink blood on a regular basis as well.

For eight long years Sadan, commander of the Finnarian detachment has been patiently lusting after Graitaan. Sadan is quite certain that the prickly Draconian is actually his mate which is something his people hold as sacred. Convincing the contrary Draconian that they are destined mates will take a major dose of perseverance. This is one courtship that will be remembered through the ages simply because Sadan figures it will take that long to talk Graitaan into agreeing to their mating. Gods help him, please.

The perfect marriage of a fantasy tale and a love story is found within the pages of Draconian Measures. Graitaan is grouchy, short tempered, and that's on a good day, whereas Sadan is charming and patient. The plotline is straightforward yet the emotional integrity of their love for each other is exceptional - one is accepting and joyful, the other in complete denial. Their romance is the very soul of Draconian Measures. Graitaan doesn't feel worthy of love while Sadan is overflowing with love to share. Take a walk within another world where love matters most in Draconian Measures. I Joyfully recommend Draconian Measures.

Draconian Measures Overview

Genre: LGBT FantasyRelated Titles: Gaven and Gaven 2: The BondingThe immortal Finnarians mate for life and once they find their mate, nothing on earth can make them leave them. But what about when that mate is not Finnarian at all, but a stubborn, fiery, extremely irritable Draconian? What if that Draconian wants nothing at all to do with his Finnarian mate? It seems the Finnarian prince, Sadan, is going to have his work cut out for him. Fortunately, he is just as stubborn and far more persistent than said Draconian has ever had to deal with.Graitaan is the last remaining Draconian and he has attracted the eye of a Finnarian prince, who claims that he is his bloodmate. Sadan may want to be mated, but Graitaan has developed a passionate hatred for his Finnarian commander, prince or not. Too bad Finnarians are persistent as the hells. Especially this one.Publisher's Note: This book contains explicit sexual content, graphic language, and situations that some readers may find objectionable: male/male sexual practices, violence.

Prove It Review

I'm not going to go into detail about the plot--obviously, you can get that here!--so I'm going to dive right in to the review.
I LOVED this book. Would it be considered romance? Maybe not. It's not really coming-of-age, either, though it has elements of both. It's a story about the ways in which relationships are built and how they change as people develop.
There were no wasted characters, not even random names mentioned. Everyone had a role in moving the plot forward and creating dynamic characters. Even Tal, who in many ways could be mistakenly viewed as a third wheel to Silas and Warren's romantic relationship was integral to the story.
I felt good reading this book. I felt like I was getting to know these three lovely boys and watching them grow up to become lovely men. I was happy for them and the places they were going. The story spans 17 years, from when the Warren and Silas are 5. In middle school Tal comes along and the trio become inseparable. While it covered a lot of time, the book wasn't particularly long, but I never felt like anything was missed. All of the important moments were hit, all of the characters fully developed. And, unlike a lot of romances, everything seemed plausible. I love how the three boys' personalities balanced each other out.
The sex scenes were graphic without being crude, were integral to the plot, and were creatively executed. Let me explain what I mean by that: too many times the sex scenes in M/M fiction follow a basic formula, repeated with each encounter. Ms. Owen explored different aspects of physical intimacy, paying as much attention to a brain-melting kiss or frottage as to actual intercourse. And none of it was gratuitous or over-the-top.
The only criticism I have deals with the pacing of the story when Warren and Silas realize that their love was different than the "just friends" love they shared with Tal. I think the time between the "I wonder if" to the declarations of love went too fast. I would have liked a little more build up to the declaration, even a bit more soul-searching, particularly by Warren. Silas's leap from "love" to "IN LOVE" actually fit well with his personality. Warren, however quiet and private he kept his thoughts, was a little too abrupt in his declaration.
I've only read one other book by Ms. Owen--Bareback--which was fabulous, emotionally draining, and downright painful--and while this book had the same quality writing, the feel of it was lighter, more positve. It's clear that Ms. Owen is a master at building authentic, relatable relationships and I know I'm going to be checking out some of her other works.
This is totally a 4.5 star book! I absolutely recommend it to others.

Prove It Overview

Warren and Silas meet for the first time at the age of five. It doesn't go well. When they reach junior high they have a truce in place and Tal, a new guy in their class, acts as a catalyst, bringing them together as best friends. Together all through high school, they survive school plays, Tal's girlfriends, Silas' boyfriend and Warren's endless studying. College is more of the same, until Silas and Tal coax Warren out of the closet. For Warren nothing changes, but for Silas the world has unexpectedly changed forever. He had no idea he was in love with his best friend at all, and when he finally tells Warren the reaction is another surprise.Prove it.Warren knows all about Silas, knows the tricks, the games, the very best and the very worst about him, and Warren loves him back. But Warren also knows that if they're going to be together it's got to be forever, and he can't just risk everything for what might be another one of Silas' whims.Silas has to prove he loves Warren, and he wants to do just that. But how do you win the heart of someone who knows you better than anyone else?

Love at First Sight (Home Series) Review

Of all the books in the series, this one is the most fairy tale like because it's like "Cinderfella" (Jonathan) can't believe he finally gets his Prince Charming (David).
Character Connections: We first met David in He Completes Me as Zach and Aaron's realtor. In Love at First Sight we learn that he also sold Clark and Noah (Home Again) their house and has known them for years. Jonathan was introduced to us at the very end of Where He Ends And I Begin as Jake was the officer who helped him after a raid of the "business" Jonathan was "working" for after he moved to NY from Emile City. That scene is retold in the beginning of this one.
There are 27 chapters and about 5000 locations worth of story. To me, this one seemed shorter than the others. It felt like there wasn't as much meat to this one compared with the other three. It was still really good and awfully sweet. The way Cardeno handled the whole concept of love at first sight was realistic and rather innovative in my opinion. Every book in the Home Series is worth the price to me as the writing is just beautiful and Cardeno C really knows how to pull a reader into the lives of the characters. He has written every story differently and with this one we get more of a third person POV that is kind of like a duel first person POV if that makes sense.
I 100% recommend Love At First Sight as well as the rest of the Home Series. Where He Ends And I Begin, Jake and Nate's story, is still my favorite but the others come in at a very close second. I can't wait for the next one! (just saw on cardenoc.com #5 is called Just What the Truth Is and is coming out Oct 11!!!!!!!!!!! And #6, The One Who Saves Me, is still listed as a work in progress)

Love at First Sight (Home Series) Overview

Do you believe in love at first sight? Jonathan does: the moment he glimpsed the striking David from afar, he was hooked, but David disappeared before they could meet. More than three years later, Jonathan gets a second chance-he and David finally meet face to face, and the two fall into a passionate love affair. David turns Jonathan's previously lonely life into a fairy tale, giving him more than he ever imagined. But the past few years have been hard for Jonathan, and he's terrified that his young son and scandalous past will be too much for David. If they're going to build a future together, they're both going to have to dig deep: David for the courage to share himself in a way he's never considered' and Jonathan for the strength to tell the truth.

Catch Me If I Fall Review

Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.
Rating: 8/10
PROS:
- Even though the story is short, it has a number of powerful little moments that brought a grin to my face. Some of them come from the main characters' interactions, and others come from the men's interactions with their families.
- For once, there's a child character in a story who amused me rather than annoyed me. Avery's nephew is four, but he's sharp and thus has a lot of "kids say the darnedest things" moments. Knox does a good job of making him cute without seeming like she's trying too hard to make him cuteSY. (Ethan's teenage daughters are rather priceless, too.)
- Avery is a total klutz around Ethan, which I found cute and funny rather than over-the-top or contrived. And Ethan is calm and sexy all the time, just smiling every time Avery does something foolish.
- The sex scene is pretty graphic and pretty hot.
CONS:
- (I actually didn't mind this, but I know some readers don't like it, so...) There's absolutely zero conflict in this story. No angst, no family drama, no lingering doubt as to whether the guys are into each other past Avery's initial confusion about Ethan's sexual orientation. This is about two guys who have been into each other for a while finally getting together. Period.
- Because it's short, there's not a lot of depth to the characters. I *liked* them, but I'm not sure this will be a re-read for me because there's just not enough here for them to really stand out.
Overall comments: This is a great example of a short story that doesn't try to do too much all at once. There are just a few scenes, but there's a lot of sweetness, a lot of romance, and a pretty smokin' hot sex scene at the end. I'd like to see something longer from this author; if she can create characters with a little more depth--and show us a longer stretch of time in their lives--she'll be a writer worth watching for.

Catch Me If I Fall Overview

Successfully repressed computer geek Avery Cole has been all too happy to take a moment from chasing down his energetic young nephew to lust after his gorgeous and very straight neighbor, Ethan--from a nice and safe distance over the hedges. Less chance of making a fool of himself in front of the man--again--by tripping over his own feet.Despite his best intentions, however, Avery's love life is about as low as a limbo champ can go, until "nice and safe" turns up on his doorstep, with Ethan bearing gifts and a few extra surprises. Suddenly "straight" makes about as much sense as a diagonal."Playing it safe" has always been Avery's motto, but now he has to decide if taking a leap of faith is worth the possibility of not being caught if he falls...Genres: Gay / Contemporary / Romantic Comedy

Personal Training (Work Out) Review

This was a great addition to the Work Out Series. The way the issues, both personal demons and family dynamics, were handled were great.

Hard as Teak Review

For this to be a first foray in the m/m genre Margie Church hits this one out of the park. An unconventional start for a m/m Church starts with a peak into the lead's (Kevin Marks) heterosexual life (including a m/f sex scene). I feel she took a great risk in including this but it paid off as it showed his journey into discovering his true self.
Kevin Marks, frustrated and unfulfilled, decides to take a vacation to his childhood cabin. Once again among the peaceful wilderness, he begins to feel an affinity toward Teak a (HAWT) interesting young man. Kevin struggles with his desires he feels toward Teak and his responsibilities for the girlfriend he left behind...
The scenes and characters were well written and really involve you in the story. Be prepared for a spicy hawt read! Sexually explicit but done in a tasteful manner, Margie Church has once again written a story worth shouting about :)

Hard as Teak Overview

Kevin Marks escapes to the north woods to reignite his passion for photography and women. But the only flame he seems able to spark is for his latest photography subject, Teak Hildalgo, and Kevin's never been in a man's arms before. Teak, the raven-haired, photographer's dream come true, is hell bent on capturing Kevin's heart. He takes Kevin, body and soul, on a romantic, sexual journey previously lived only in Kevin's fantasies. And no dream was ever this good, no truth this undeniable. Will Kevin ever be the same? When the camera's put away, will Teak live up to his name?

Muscling Through Review

I loved both this novelette and Pricks and Pragmatism by the same author. They are both told in first person, in a distinctively, working-class, British voice (different characters, the books are unrelated) which is sometimes brilliantly funny. This novelette is about a big, sweet, gruff-looking guy, maybe not the brightest bulb, but such a good soul. He falls in love with a Cambridge Art History Professor, and the story takes it from there. Both characters are good people and very likeable, as are the colorful side characters and at times very funny. Definitely, worth the read. I loved it, so I kind of wish it was longer, but it pacts a punch, so I don't know what else really needed to be said. Regardless, it left me with a big smile.

Muscling Through Overview

The bigger they come, the harder they fall... in love.Cambridge art professor Larry Morton takes one, alcohol-glazed look at the huge, tattooed man looming in a dark alley, and assumes he's done for. Moments later he finds himself disarmed-literally and figuratively. And, the next morning, he can't rest until he offers an apology to the man who turned out to be more gentle than giant. Larry's intrigued to find there's more to Al Fletcher than meets the eye; he possesses a natural artistic talent that shines through untutored technique. Unfortunately, no one else seems to see the sensitive soul beneath Al's imposing, scarred, undeniably sexy exterior. Least of all Larry's class-conscious family, who would like nothing better than to split up this mismatched pair. Is it physical? Oh, yes, it's deliciously physical, and so much more-which makes Larry's next task so daunting. Not just convincing his colleagues, friends and family that their relationship is more than skin deep. It's convincing Al.Contains comic misunderstandings, misuse of art materials, and unexpected poignancy.
