Some Kind of Wonderful Review

Caitlyn has a past she'd rather forget. Matt is looking for his past. The two live across the hall from each other but have never met. That is, until one night a baby is left in the hallway, on Matt's side, and he goes across the hall to Caitlyn for help. Together the two take care of the baby and fight the pain of each of their past.
This was a good novel. The characters were likable and well developed. They could be people we all know in real life. They each grow throughout the story and grow together as neighbors and friends. The storyline in this book seemed to be well thought out. It moved at a fairly decent pace.
There are a lot of events that happen over the one week course of this story. All in all this was a good book. I found myself reading as fast as I could because I couldn't wait to find out what happened. I would like to see a follow-up book to this story. Maybe one more in-depth with Sarah and Reverend Johnathan.

The Last Letter Review

There were so many things to love about this book -- but the most compelling for me was depiction of the complexities and tragic misunderstandings of a relationship between a mother and her daughter. As the story opens we see Katherine, a 26 year old woman who is forced to take in her dying and estranged mother Jeannie. The source of Katherines bitterness and resentment toward her mother is unfolded in a parallel story line set in the 1800's, when Katherine was just a young girl who set off with her family as they attempted to make a new life on the prairie. But their little family was wholly unprepared for what prairie life had in store for them -- for the utter devastation it would bring to their family. Without divulging too much, I came to see Jeannie as a true heroine who, unbeknownst to her children, did the absolute best she could under utterly terrible circumstances. The adult Katherine could not begin to grasp the untenable situation her mother was left in - she knew only that the women whom she once adored, the most tender, loving and selfless person she knew - her playmate, her confidante, her protector and defender - her whole world, had turned her back on her. Katherine could not know the calamities that reduced the strong and capable Jeannie, with such limitless hopes and the noblest intentions for her family, to a walking wasteland. Katherine could not know that she had been purposely shielded from a father and husband deserving of neither title. They were children, mercifully kept unaware of the secrets that Jeannie hid away so deeply, and the cost of that protection was the love of her children. Kathleen has deftly demonstrated that the emotions, personal dilemmas and the heartbreaking decisions of a women on the prairie in the early 1800s are equally relevant today. With vivid detail she takes the reader to a world that no longer exists, demonstrates that although it may have been a simpler time, it was, in enumerable ways, an extremely difficult time for a women to ensure the well being of her children against extreme adversity. It is a gripping story you are sure to love.

The Last Letter Overview

Katherine wouldn't have believed it if she hadn't found the letter... Katherine Arthur's mother arrives on her doorstep, dying, forcing her to relive a past she wanted to forget. When Katherine was young, the Arthur family had been affluent city dwellers until shame sent them running for the prairie, into the unknown. Taking her family, including young Katherine, to live off the land was the last thing Jeanie Arthur had wanted, but she would do her best to make a go of it. For Jeanie's husband Frank it had been a world of opportunity. Dreaming, lazy Frank. But, it was a society of uncertainty-a domain of natural disasters, temptation, hatred, even death. '' Ten-year-old Katherine had loved her mother fiercely, put her trust in her completely, but when there was no other choice, and Jeanie resorted to extreme measures on the prairie to save her family, she tore Katherine's world apart. Now, seventeen years later, and far from the homestead, Katherine has found the truth - she has discovered the last letter. After years of anger, can Katherine find it in her heart to understand why her mother made the decisions that changed them all? Can she forgive and finally begin to heal before it's too late?Independent Publisher Awards: 2011 Gold Medal, Best Regional Fiction-MidwestNational Indie Excellence Book Awards:2011 Finalist Award-Historical Fiction 2011 Finalist Award-Regional FictionInternational Book Awards:2011 Finalist Award-Historical Fiction 2011 Finalist Award-Best New Fiction

Far Away Home Review

Some writers excel at creating a world we want to succumb to, while others master the dynamics of a story that has the power to affect our sense of humanity. I feel that Susan Denning has found THE balance. Because I come from a filmmaking perspective, I especially enjoyed her skill at immediately grabbing the reader by the collar and dropping him in Aislynn's meticulously crafted world - the smells, the textures, the social dynamic, the moral compass of that time. And I found myself smiling with gratitude when, by page two, I realized I wanted to remain in that world. And I did, and left only when I unfortunately had to, at the end of Aislynn's journey from the girl she was to the woman she was always meant to become. I am ready, Mrs. Denning, as some of your other reviewers also seem to be, to be there for her next journey.
This is not a book you read; it is a book you experience. I hope that many, many, many get to enjoy it.

Far Away Home Overview

In post-Civil War New York City, sixteen-year-old Aislynn Denehy cannot find a job, she has no place to live and no family to help her. Some might think this is a problem; Aislynn believes it is an opportunity, but she has a lot to learn. No formulaic romance, this well-researched love story depicts life as it truly was for the thousands of women who went west reaching for a new life. Aislynn's journey begins in a New York City tenement and leads her across the frontier to a Utah mining camp where she must cope with the three very different men in her life: smart, solicitous Tim, good-natured, good-guy Johnny and the intense but intriguing Liam Moran. Life in the roughshod camp brings small joys and devastating losses. The novel races through authentic experiences involving historical events until it erupts in an unexpected ending. In today's troubled world, Far Away Home will make you believe no matter how many challenges fate sends your way, the human spirit can triumph.

Waking Up Gray Review

Lizbeth Jackson, aged forty and divorced is finally free. Free from her sham of a marriage, free from her cheating ex husband and free to lead her own life in any way she wants to.
She arrives on Ocracoke Island from her home in Durham to spend the following few months studying the Carolina brogue for her masters degree. She is at last fulfilling her dream which had been put on hold all these years after Lizbeth married James and had her daughter Mazie at nineteen. Mazie was the one good thing to come out of the marriage.
Lizberth is renting her late aunt Minnie's cottage from her cousins. Although Lizbeth hasn't been to Ocracoke Island for years, she soon settles in to life on the island, helped by her aunt's friend, Fanny O'Neal, from the cottage opposite.
When Lizbeth sees Fanny's granddaughter outside kissing a woman one night, Lizbeth can't get the sight out of her head. When Lizbeth meets Gray over at Fanny's cottage, Gray starts flirting with her and Lizbeth can't help feeling attracted to her.
Lizbeth and Gray begin to spend time together and Lizbeth finds herself falling for Gray in a big way. She decides to throw caution to the wind and go with her feelings. So what if Gray is a woman and Lizbeth has only ever been out with men? Gray however, doesn't want to allow herself to fall in love. She knows Lizbeth will leave the island to go back to her life in Durham and she feels she can't take the hurt and pain this would cause her. Gray has been hurt badly in the past. She knows what she feels for Lizbeth now would break her heart beyond repair if she actually fell in love with her totally.
But the inevitable happens, Lizbeth and Gray sleep together and they fall in love. But the course of their love is to be rudely interrupted by an ex lover turning up, just when things are going so well. The course of events that follow could have a tragic outcome. Will Lizbeth and Gray's love be able survive the consequences of the events that follow?
At last, another delightful romance from the pen of R.E Bradshaw. For me the moral of this book is that yes, life can really begin at forty. Yes, you can start over again from scratch. This book gives hope for anyone that finds themselves in this situation. It is very true to everyday life. This book is wonderfully refreshing and a real must for lovers of fine romance. The descriptions of Ocracoke Island just made me want to book a holiday there. The book is so well written and descriptive, that as a reader I felt at ease among the characters, just like I was viewing it all as it actually happened among friends. I was right there with them. The characters are adorable. The book is a real page turner from the very first page right through to the last page. After each book from R.E Bradshaw, I wonder how she can top the last one, how she can make her stories any better? Well, I have to say she manages it somehow, all her books are nothing but consistently good. I would be hard pressed to pick a favorite among R.E Bradshaw's books. I adore them all. They will always have a permanent place on my book shelves, this one included.

Waking Up Gray Overview

Can you start your life over at forty? Lizbeth Jackson was about to find out. She found her first gray hair on the morning of her trip to Ocracoke Island, off the coast of North Carolina. Lizbeth was about to begin a three month sabbatical, on the scenic coastal island, in order to finish her Master's thesis in Linguistic Anthropology. She plans to study the Carolina Brogue spoken there. What she ends up studying is her lesbian neighbor across the street and the uncontrollable pull Lizbeth feels toward her. Lizbeth Jackson is about to find out what life has to offer, after waking up gray.

Stone Butch Blues: A Novel Review

Author Leslie Feinberg has done a remarkable thing in the writing of Stone Butch Blues. The author has opened her soul to anyone who reads and exposed us each to our own fears of being different no matter how slight it may be. Being a gay male, reading this book was recommeded to me by a lesbian friend. At first I was reading it out of respect for my friend, but I found myself unable to put the book down. The story is endearing to anyone who desires to know more about the human spirit and the need and will to survive. I laughed, cried and saw myself in so many of the fears, questions, lonley times and good times experienced by Jess, the Stone Butch. Thank you Leslie Feinberg for the way you gave us a piece of your soul in the book and allowed us to become a little more accepting of our differences and of who we are.

This was a great addition to the Work Out Series. The way the issues, both personal demons and family dynamics, were handled were great.

Why I Love Waiters Review

Why I Love Waiters
Literary Nymphs Review
After visiting with his family in New York for a few days, Army Ranger Sergeant John Davidson returns to the military base in Georgia. John's personal mission is to discover if Heath Kane, the waiter at Corner Café John has been secretly lusting after for months, is gay and if the attraction is mutual. Turns out the answers are yes to both of John's questions. Why I Love Waiters is the second book in the Why I Love series. The setting is ideal for the social issues highlighted in the plot; the southern small towns with a number of abusive homophobic people, as well as the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" law. These events add drama to the otherwise humorous interaction between the characters. Also blended into the well written storyline are the characters from the first book Why I Love Geeks. I suggest reading the first book to fully appreciate Why I Love Waiters. The main theme clearly illustrated is the importance of love, in addition to friends and family support. John has a large family who accepts the honorable man that he is and welcomes Heath with open arms. Heath has an outspoken grandmother who loves him unconditionally. Secure in the knowledge that they truly love each other and are supported, John is able to make plans for a long term future with Heath. T. A. Chase's creative writing style is communicative on numerous psychological levels, the closed minded attitudes of part of society, intellectual loveable characters that are particularly amusing, as well as being exceptionally sensual and the beautiful heartwarming happy ending. Why I Love Waiters is an absolutely marvelous saga that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Why I Love Waiters Overview

As a member of a covert army unit, John Davidson isnâ€'t scared of many things, yet one look into the dark blue eyes of Heath Kane and John knew a different kind of fear for the first time. John couldn't be gay, at least not out and proud in his unit, even with Don't Ask, Don't Tell being repealed. He'd never been interested enough in any man to risk the fallout. Heath Kane left home never wanting to return. The army-base town wasn't the best place for a gay kid to grow up, but his grandmother did her darnedest to make it good for him. Now he's paying her back for all her love. Sheâ€'s getting older and needs help with the family restaurant, so he waits tables at the Corner Café while taking online courses to get his degree. Even though the army base provides lots of buff eye candy, he knows itâ€'s best to keep his eyes to himself. Yet neither Heath nor John can deny their attraction, and when John returns from a visit up North, he seems willing to act on their mutual interest. Are John and Heath willing to risk everything to hold each other? NOTE: This book is part of the Why I Love... series. Genres: Gay / Contemporary / Romantic Comedy / Series

Bear, Otter, and the Kid Review

Readers of M/M fiction know all to well that the books in this genre are widely hit and miss, with many nothing better than fan fiction you can find on the internet. I had heard about this novel, and that it was the first book for Mr. Klune. Then I saw some of the reviews on here and Goodreads and saw they were excellent so I decided to give it a try.
Believe the hype.
TJ Klune creates an astonishing debut, something that has turned into not only the best book I've read this year, but probably the best book I've read in many years. Bear, Otter, and the Kid is extraordinary in the sense that it reads like a much more accomplished author; the writing style is fantastic, the lead voice is wonderfully unique, the characters are three dimensional and each contributing something to the story. All to often tertiary characters can fall flat, but not so here. I was particularly overjoyed at the way Anna (Bear's off and on girlfriend) was portrayed, as readers in M/M fiction can attest that women usually come off as shrill harpies with ulterior motives.
The love story between Bear and Otter is fantastic... but the Kid... well, lets just say the Kid is the most amazing part of this whole thing. The words that come out of his mouth will leave you breathless.
You will laugh, you will cry, but most of all, you will understand that family is what we make it. Bravo to TJ Klune for one of my greatest reads.

Bear, Otter, and the Kid Overview

Three years ago, Bear McKenna's mother took off for parts unknown with her new boyfriend, leaving Bear to raise his six-year-old brother Tyson, aka the Kid. Somehow they've muddled through, but since he's totally devoted to the Kid, Bear isn't actually doing much living-with a few exceptions, he's retreated from the world, and he's mostly okay with that. Until Otter comes home. Otter is Bear's best friend's older brother, and as they've done for their whole lives, Bear and Otter crash and collide in ways neither expect. This time, though, there's nowhere to run from the depth of emotion between them. Bear still believes his place is as the Kid's guardian, but he can't help thinking there could be something more for him in the world... something or someone.

Flat-Out Love Review

Humorous, thoughtful, clever, and at times heartbreaking, Flat-out Love is about love, loss, and the great lengths a family will go to protect one of their own. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll root for a seemingly elusive happily ever after. No doubt about it, Flat-out Love is flat-out fabulous.

Flat-Out Love Overview

Flat-Out Love is a warm and witty novel of family love and dysfunction, deep heartache and raw vulnerability, with a bit of mystery and one whopping, knock-you-to-your-knees romance. It's not what you know--or when you see--that matters. It's about a journey.Something is seriously off in the Watkins home. And Julie Seagle, college freshman, small-town Ohio transplant, and the newest resident of this Boston house, is determined to get to the bottom of it. When Julie's off-campus housing falls through, her mother's old college roommate, Erin Watkins, invites her to move in. The parents, Erin and Roger, are welcoming, but emotionally distant and academically driven to eccentric extremes. The middle child, Matt, is an MIT tech geek with a sweet side ... and the social skills of a spool of USB cable. The youngest, Celeste, is a frighteningly bright but freakishly fastidious 13-year-old who hauls around a life-sized cardboard cutout of her oldest brother almost everywhere she goes. And there's that oldest brother, Finn: funny, gorgeous, smart, sensitive, almost emotionally available. Geographically? Definitely unavailable. That's because Finn is traveling the world and surfacing only for random Facebook chats, e-mails, and status updates. Before long, through late-night exchanges of disembodied text, he begins to stir something tender and silly and maybe even a little bit sexy in Julie's suddenly lonesome soul.To Julie, the emotionally scrambled members of the Watkins family add up to something that ... well ... doesn't quite add up. Not until she forces a buried secret to the surface, eliciting a dramatic confrontation that threatens to tear the fragile Watkins family apart, does she get her answer.Flat-Out Love comes complete with emails, Facebook status updates, and instant messages.

Rescue Me (a quirky romance novel about secrets, forgiveness and falling in love) Review

Okay, so I missed the little phrase 'romance novel' in this book's title when I purchased it. I, up to this point, had neither read, nor wanted to read, a so-called 'romance novel'. Not to get too personal in a book review, but I have plenty of real 'romance' in my personal life, so I've never cared to read about it in a novel. But I digress. I downloaded this book and read it without realizing it wasn't a typical 'chick lit' novel. And you know what? It was really good! Ms. Allan is a terrific writer and this is a very charming story. So, whether you're interested in 'romance' or not, I recommend this book, especially in light of its very reasonable price.

Rescue Me (a quirky romance novel about secrets, forgiveness and falling in love) Overview

Lacking coping skills, she takes refuge behind sarcasm and solitude. But, thanks to Dr. Rainer Hartmann, her sister's friend and a man who mistakes overbearing control for helping, she finds herself on the opposite end of the control stick. A wildly independent woman, Hailey fights with the determination of a bulldog as Rainer struggles to drag her out of despair...and into his arms.(Length: Full length novel)If you enjoyed RESCUE ME, be sure to check out Sydney's latest release, PRETTY LITTLE KILLER, available now on Kindle!SAMPLEWithin minutes, the room grew stifling. She nudged Rainer in the shoulder. “Take this will ya?" She handed him her glass.“Had enough?"“Nope. Just hot. Need to get outta this sweatshirt. She tugged the heavy garment over her head. The world tipped, and she lost her balance, bumping into Rainer. A smirk on his face made her bristle. “What?"“Nothing."“That's some strong ass wine," she explained.“That's some strong language."“I'm not in grade school anymore, ya know."His gaze heated. “Believe me. I know that."She drew back, realizing she had been leaning against him. “Can I have my glass now?"“No. I think you've had enough."“Who are you? My damn mother?"“No. I'm your friend."“Oh, God, not that. I know all about you and your friends."“You know all about it, eh?" he asked with a laugh. He was enjoying this conversation way too much.“What the hell is so funny?"“Nothing."“You're laughing."“Okay, okay." He threw up his arms in surrender. “I'm laughing. You're funny, you little spitfire."“You're not. You big'you'" She couldn't think of a word that summed him up. He was the epitome of contradictions. Gorgeous, a pain in the ass, funny, a pain in the ass, smart, sexy'her body heated even more as her gaze settled on his mouth, surrounded by a day's worth of stubble. Yup, she was feeling alive, all right. Alive and hot.He moved closer, and her heart shuddered.“I'm what?" he asked.“Nothing."He shook his head. “If two glasses of wine can't even loosen you up, what will?"“What are you talking about? I'm as loose as a goose." She lobbed her head, rolled it from side to side, then shrugged her shoulders up and down several times. “See? I couldn't get any looser."“That's not what I meant."“What'd you mean, then?"“I thought you might be more honest with a couple glasses of wine warming your belly. More honest with yourself and with me."“I am. Hell, I was just noticing how sexy your mouth is." She smiled. Had she just said that? “See? Honest."“Hmmm. Honest, all right. My mouth?
