Psychic Moon Review

The werewolf and a vet, perfect match in my book. I do agree that the story could have been a bit more descriptive and just more backstory. There was enough to get a handle on the story but there wasn't enough on their supernatural society which does play a bit of a role towards the end of the story. But it was still an extremely entertaining read and there were something about the characters that just drew you in and made you want a little more. I will definitely read more from this author in the future

Psychic Moon Overview

Humane Officer Derek Wiliams has been toying with the idea of asking out Brian O'Donogue since the veterinarian started working at the Pet Rescue Center two years ago. So why hasn't he made his move? It's complicated' but it has something to do with the fact that Derek occasionally likes to run around on four legs instead of two. Recovering from an abusive relationship and hiding supernatural abilities of his own, Brian takes a chance and agrees to go on a date with Derek. The ensuing relationship is better than either of them could have hoped-until a rogue wolf shifter attacks Brian while he's walking his dogs. The abrupt attack forces Derek to confront his feelings, but the danger isn't over. The rogue shifter is out there, and he's hunting them.

Str8te Boys Review

Yes there are some issues especially with the character relationships and the simplistic story. I can also understand the stereotypes... Really "Catcher" and "Pitcher"? but did i put down the book at any point in the 24 hours it took me to read... no... However, something about "straight" boys and "jocks" is appealing to me.. i did feel a connection. It was a more simpler Brokeback Mountain but still a great coming out story, although it seemed too quick... Did it really take 4 years and only a few days to turn friends into lovers into partners for life.. Although its definitely not a book that would really make your world turn around... it did resonate with me.. i guess if you feel like one of the characters as i did, you would understand... i enjoyed the book and could read it again.. Most gay films are laden with stereotypes and although there are a few here, it isn't so far from the truth... If you are looking for a sophisticated gay novel, this isn't it... i will say the sexual scenes were amazing and if you have had a fantasy for straight masculine and muscular men... this is definitely a book you want to read and for the price...!!!

Str8te Boys Overview

How far would you dare to go'to win it all? Maverick Holms and Duke Warren share almost everything-a college soccer team, an apartment and the same extremely competitive nature. Thanks to that never-back-down spirit, they're about to share more than they bargained for. The game is “gay chicken". The rule: get as close as possible without kissing, and the one that pulls away first is the loser. The problem: neither of them likes to lose. It isn't long before the game becomes an excuse to touch and kiss in every possible forbidden way. And after they pose for a gay website to earn extra money, things really heat up. Suddenly Duke is talking lifetime commitment, and Mav is backpedaling as hard as he can, not sure if he's ready to accept all his best friend is offering him. Or the truth about what he is. Warning: Hot M/M sex inside. Do not open this book if you don't like the idea of two deliciously muscular best friends becoming lovers.

Damian and the Doctor (Symbiotic Mates) Review

I'm really liking this series. The stories are not formula plots - man meets mate, overcomes an obstacle, and lives happily ever after. It's more like happily for now, but who knows what's going to happen later. Each book focuses on the main characters, and their romance, and takes the plot a little further. But you know there's a lot of story left and it leaves you wanting more.

Damian and the Doctor (Symbiotic Mates) Overview

A disfigured vampire forms a bond with a Lycan hostage, grateful for the companionship of someone that doesn't care about his appearance--even if it's only an animal. But when the wolf shifts to human form, will Doc still look past Damian's scarred face or turn away in disgust? Doc, the Lycan physician, is taken hostage and imprisoned in the Colony, home to the vampires. He knows they have some sinister plan for him but he intends to go down fighting--as a wolf. Beaten and drugged, Doc's canine spirit is at its lowest point, but nothing can persuade him to shift to human form until Damian, a disfigured vampire, gains his trust. It's Damian's job to convince the wolf to shift, but the lonely vampire is grateful for the companionship and he dreads the day when he'll see pity and loathing on the Lycan's human face. Will Doc be able to look past Damian's scar or will he turn away in disgust? Content Advisory: This title includes both M/M and M/F content, mild BDSM, and scenes of rape or near rape.

Pricks and Pragmatism Review

I've read my fair share of gay romance, and while a lot of it has been good and well written, I've never felt the urge to comment before this. "Pricks and Pragmatism" is funny, skillfully designed and written, and very emotionally engaging. I actually felt like I could see what was described.
Most gay romances are all about sex; to the point that they're basically porn. This book, while it doesn't dismiss sex, doesn't go on and on about it so you can actually enjoy the fantastic story that goes with it. Then there are the characters. The way they come alive in this novel is breathtaking! I especially love the way the main character describes things. He made me laugh so hard I woke my family from the other room.
All in all, I love this book, want more like it, and after I finish this review I am definitely taking a look at JL Merrow's other works. : D

Pricks and Pragmatism Overview

Easy come, easy go'until the heart gets involved. English student and aspiring journalist Luke Corbin should be studying. Instead he's facing homelessness, thanks to the lover who's just kicking him out of their posh digs. It's not his first rejection-his father tossed him out at age sixteen-but Luke has no problem trading his favors for a home and security. Especially with rich, powerful, handsome men. Except now, with finals bearing down, there's no time to be choosy. He needs a roof over his head and he needs it now. Even if it means settling temporarily for a geeky, less-than-well-off chemical engineer called Russell. Luke's fully prepared to put out for the guy-because after all, in this world no one gets something for nothing. But Russell isn't just a nerd; he's an honourable nerd who wants to save himself for someone special. At first Luke is annoyed, but the more time he spends with Russell, the closer he comes to a devastating realization. He wants to be that someone special. Except he's fallen for the one man he can't seem to charm'

Dirty Kiss Review

First, I have to admit that romance is not my favorite genre. It's not that I'm down on love, relationships. and canoodling, I prefer a higher ratio of action/plot to sweaty cuddle sex. That being said, Dirty Kiss provides plenty of both.
You've all seen the dubious free e-books out there with names like "Twilight Wannabes in Suede Condoms" or some such thing. You may have even downloaded one. And then felt ripped off afterward because it sucked and your brain is now bleeding from the literary trauma. Dirty Kiss did not make me feel like I lost 30 IQ points reading it. Rhys Ford's writing is solid, witty, and well-paced. The story is compelling. Exploring Cole and Jae-Min's back stories was unexpectedly enjoyable. The author did a great job at revealing just enough to keep you interested at just the right times.
There is a fair amount of time spent on the relationship mechanics between Cole and Jae-Min. As a romance novel its less "are they going to get together" and more "can they make this work?" Both of them come with some heavy baggage, but I never felt that it was overplayed or that they were unrealistically victimized.
The complexities of homosexuality in modern Asian culture are also portrayed well. Some authors just slap on an ethnic name, throw in some chopsticks, and think they're done. Ford conveys the situation well. The sex scenes were hot, and there were a few of them.
There are some bits that I feel could have been fleshed out more. The mystery is solid but I feel some of the structure was sacrificed for the romance. Still, the writing is good, and at the end of it, I can forgive almost anything as long as the writing is good.

Dirty Kiss Overview

Cole Kenjiro McGinnis, ex-cop and PI, is trying to get over the shooting death of his lover when a supposedly routine investigation lands in his lap. Investigating the apparent suicide of a prominent Korean businessman's son proves to be anything but ordinary, especially when it introduces Cole to the dead man's handsome cousin, Kim Jae-Min. Jae-Min's cousin had a dirty little secret, the kind that Cole has been familiar with all his life and that Jae-Min is still hiding from his family. The investigation leads Cole from tasteful mansions to seedy lover's trysts to Dirty Kiss, the place where the rich and discreet go to indulge in desires their traditional-minded families would rather know nothing about. It also leads Cole McGinnis into Jae-Min's arms, and that could be a problem. Jae-Min's cousin's death is looking less and less like a suicide, and Jae-Min is looking more and more like a target. Cole has already lost one lover to violence-he's not about to lose Jae-Min too.

Zero at the Bone Review

"Zero At The Bone" represents the best of both worlds. It excites the emotions in the way a good thriller should, but it also stirs the deeper feelings of loneliness and connection we associate with tragedy. With her new book, author Jane Seville balance and blends the romantic, criminal and emotional into a gripping love story of the highest caliber.
The premise is deceptively simple if one perceives this as merely a "gay romantic thriller". That said, one might expect a hitman and his dark underworld to merely serve as a backdrop or surface material for explicit homoerotic interludes. But they're not. Here, the complexities of organized crime are given as much attention and compelling detail as the emotional terrain of protagonists Jack and D's relationship. To say the aforementioned characters are vividly brought to life is to put it mildly.
Throughout the story, Seville keeps hitman D's internal tensions visceral and engaging; depicting his alertness to ubiquitous dangers while emanating sangfroid, bristling under his confidant X's censure but in need of her tutelage, drawn to civilian Jack but made anxious by him. It's all there in thoughtful detail as this is a sad, damaged man and Seville conveys his guilt and repression with aching clarity. When he decides not to take a mob ordered hit on witness Jack Francisco, the reader is privy to a provocative, no-holds barred look inside a repressed criminal at a personal crossroads. And while at first he's written to seem cold and detached, it makes it fascinating when he's skewered by the arrow of true love.
Alas, these feelings for Jack cause him to unravel, and we can feel it. Not every writer can so powerfully render that physical sense through words. Seville doesn't just write passion between men but somehow takes us inside it, so that we understand what it would be like to exist as D... to inhabit a body built up to block all emotional attachment and now suddenly be flooded with nonstop longing.
Seville's commitment to the character of Jack-- who delivers "Zero"'s romantic heart-- is equally dedicated. With his character, she incisively details one proud man's descent into fear and survival mode. At first (after deciding not to kill him) D serves as a less formal type of `Witness Protection' for Jack. And when the two fall in love the stakes are raised considerably. Open-faced with fear and bewilderment, dallying in macho even as he quivers in dire expectation, Jack is forced to undergo considerable change. And it's quite exciting it read that as he uncovers such inner-strength and ferocity, he becomes his lover's equal.
However, D is understandably at odds with his repressed homosexuality and this makes for fascinating scenes when set against Jack's lovesick weary openness. Atop it all, there's a moral imperative to Jack's character; a law-abiding medical surgeon. Hence, D's past is a considerable burden and begs moral compromise. He assesses the unsettling acts of D's hitman past and the implausibility of any real future together but cannot be free of D and the pain of loving such a man. It's as if--even in their sort time spent together-- they've marked one another for life. And it's too the author's credit that the reader genuinely believes someone like Jack could fall in love with a killer to begin with.
At first D attempts to not personalize his contact with Jack (while together in hiding) but platonic exchanges soon creak open the floodgates. There's one scene where Jack aids a wounded D-- purely as a doctor-- and the reader is reminded that slow, subtle eroticism is after all possible in modern gay fiction. Now the actual sex, while not particularly explicit, is still romantically explicit; revealing and withholding in perfect proportion.
"Zero" is also one of the most exciting and suspenseful novels I've read in quite some time; the story speeds along, the romance made all the more richer by the intense action sequences. Gripping as well as smart, it feels at times almost like "Brokeback Mountain" blended together with "No Country for Old Men". Even the prefatory motel sequence is marked by fury, loneliness, and the ferocious thrill of the illicit. Later on, there's a remarkable sequence in a warehouse in which D is trapped and held at gunpoint by an adversary while cradling his wounded lover. His emotional state is one anybody could fathom, though it's hard to put a name to it -- defensive acknowledgment? Pained hysteria? Seville renders the moment with brutal dialogue and evocative descriptions; a life-or-death exchange that's charged, emotional and defining with the sense that this man's last chance at happiness lays bleeding in his arms.
From this, Seville successfully lies out and examines themes that tie together beautifully while avoiding traditional rigidity of "plot". Few will be unsatisfied with the book's evocation of love between two very different men. Also, the supporting characters are vivid and finely drawn as well. The story's villains deeply unsettling but never one-note. And the book avoids an ending of soppy moralizing or fairy tale romance in favor of a kind of ambiguity whilst still allowing one to imagine certain things far past the actual end. Ultimately, what we have here is a "gay romantic thriller" that transcends all such labels to become a story with universal appeal and the kinds of characters that will stay with you forever. Trust me, it's a knockout.

Zero at the Bone Overview

After witnessing a mob hit, surgeon Jack Francisco is put into protective custody to keep him safe until he can testify. A hitman known only as D is blackmailed into killing Jack, but when he tracks him down, his weary conscience won't allow him to murder an innocent man. Finding in each other an unlikely ally, Jack and D are soon on the run from shadowy enemies.Forced to work together to survive, the two men forge a bond that ripens into unexpected passion. Jack sees the wounded soul beneath D's cold, detached exterior, and D finds in Jack the person who can help him reclaim the man he once was. As the day of Jack's testimony approaches, he and D find themselves not only fighting for their lives... but also fighting for their future. A future together.

Waking Up Gray Review

Lizbeth Jackson, aged forty and divorced is finally free. Free from her sham of a marriage, free from her cheating ex husband and free to lead her own life in any way she wants to.
She arrives on Ocracoke Island from her home in Durham to spend the following few months studying the Carolina brogue for her masters degree. She is at last fulfilling her dream which had been put on hold all these years after Lizbeth married James and had her daughter Mazie at nineteen. Mazie was the one good thing to come out of the marriage.
Lizberth is renting her late aunt Minnie's cottage from her cousins. Although Lizbeth hasn't been to Ocracoke Island for years, she soon settles in to life on the island, helped by her aunt's friend, Fanny O'Neal, from the cottage opposite.
When Lizbeth sees Fanny's granddaughter outside kissing a woman one night, Lizbeth can't get the sight out of her head. When Lizbeth meets Gray over at Fanny's cottage, Gray starts flirting with her and Lizbeth can't help feeling attracted to her.
Lizbeth and Gray begin to spend time together and Lizbeth finds herself falling for Gray in a big way. She decides to throw caution to the wind and go with her feelings. So what if Gray is a woman and Lizbeth has only ever been out with men? Gray however, doesn't want to allow herself to fall in love. She knows Lizbeth will leave the island to go back to her life in Durham and she feels she can't take the hurt and pain this would cause her. Gray has been hurt badly in the past. She knows what she feels for Lizbeth now would break her heart beyond repair if she actually fell in love with her totally.
But the inevitable happens, Lizbeth and Gray sleep together and they fall in love. But the course of their love is to be rudely interrupted by an ex lover turning up, just when things are going so well. The course of events that follow could have a tragic outcome. Will Lizbeth and Gray's love be able survive the consequences of the events that follow?
At last, another delightful romance from the pen of R.E Bradshaw. For me the moral of this book is that yes, life can really begin at forty. Yes, you can start over again from scratch. This book gives hope for anyone that finds themselves in this situation. It is very true to everyday life. This book is wonderfully refreshing and a real must for lovers of fine romance. The descriptions of Ocracoke Island just made me want to book a holiday there. The book is so well written and descriptive, that as a reader I felt at ease among the characters, just like I was viewing it all as it actually happened among friends. I was right there with them. The characters are adorable. The book is a real page turner from the very first page right through to the last page. After each book from R.E Bradshaw, I wonder how she can top the last one, how she can make her stories any better? Well, I have to say she manages it somehow, all her books are nothing but consistently good. I would be hard pressed to pick a favorite among R.E Bradshaw's books. I adore them all. They will always have a permanent place on my book shelves, this one included.

Waking Up Gray Overview

Can you start your life over at forty? Lizbeth Jackson was about to find out. She found her first gray hair on the morning of her trip to Ocracoke Island, off the coast of North Carolina. Lizbeth was about to begin a three month sabbatical, on the scenic coastal island, in order to finish her Master's thesis in Linguistic Anthropology. She plans to study the Carolina Brogue spoken there. What she ends up studying is her lesbian neighbor across the street and the uncontrollable pull Lizbeth feels toward her. Lizbeth Jackson is about to find out what life has to offer, after waking up gray.

A Bit of Rough Review

James Justin doesn't normally cruise biker bars. His Friday nights are normally spent at
home, alone. Wanting to do something exciting after being passed over for a project, the
rising architect finds himself in a rowdy dive surrounded by leather wearing, tattooed,
bikers. Soon his attention is drawn to a group playing pool. Especially attractive is the
brawny cowboy with the sexy laugh.
Bram Lord spots James staring at him and likes what he sees. Inviting James outside, Bram maneuvers him into the alley behind the bar and into an intense sexual encounter. Bram is stronger, bigger and more forceful than James. Everything James finds exciting in a man.
Bram, having enjoyed the one night stand, asks to see James again. A long-term relationship looks promising for James and Bram who share intense passion and common interests. But can James overcome his secret insecurity and vulnerability to find love with the open and confident Bram?
A Bit of Rough is sexy, exciting and tender. Yes, I said tender. The love story between the shy, but charming, James and the rugged, caring Bram is tender and romantic. I especially enjoyed the loving manner in which Bram protected James. I'm jealous of James. Bram is simply yummy. Good looking, strong, bold, secure, and down and dirty in the bedroom. A delicious combination. Not that James doesn't have a lot to offer. He does. He's kind-hearted, charming, smart, and the perfect sexual match for Bram.
Great character development, a solid plot and scrumptiously erotic sex make for a well-written book. I enjoyed A Bit of Rough so much, I've read it twice and look forward to reading it again. For fans of gay erotica, Laura Baumbach's A Bit of Rough is a must-read.

Driftwood Review

Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.
Rating: 9/10
PROS:
- The writing throughout is beautifully expressive and poetic; the descriptions of Cornwall, for instance, make the setting seem both familiar and exotic. Fox also has a way of describing events so that even normal occurrences have an almost unearthly aura to them.
- The characterization is ridiculously solid, especially for how short (relatively) the story is. I was intrigued by Thomas right from the start. He's a damaged soul, and the words that convey this about him are, more often than not, thrown into sentences so succinctly and so perfectly that I paused often to reread them: "The bathroom was the only part of the watchtower he had bothered to have professionally refurbished--worth it, for a man who still hallucinated desert dust in the crevices of his body, whose dreams left his muscles so rigid with resistance he could often barely walk until he'd immersed himself in a bath." Flynn is damaged, too, yet Thomas sees him as entirely pure and beautiful. The characters complement each other beautifully.
- Thomas's slow, confusing journey back to life when Flynn enters the picture is magnificent. The resulting emotions aren't always pleasant--along with joyfulness and sexual arousal are also confusion, embarrassment, and anger/indignation--but Thomas starts out as a shell and ends up as a man.
- This story eloquently captures the pain and worry of those who love people who risk their lives for their jobs. Flynn is a rescue worker in the British Navy--the guys who go out during storms to find people who are lost at sea--and there's a scene in which Thomas is waiting in a room with a bunch of other rescue workers' "halves" that is absolutely haunting.
CONS:
- (I'm not sure this is really a con, per se; it's just a warning for potential readers.) I can't remember laughing outright a single time while reading this. The descriptions of a few characters, and of Thomas's dog, made me smile a few times, but the overall tone is somber and melancholy. (It does have a happy ending, in case you're worried about that.)
- There are a few conversations that are so mystical or numinous or something that I lost track of what the heck the guys were talking about. Maybe this is meant to show their connection on a plane where other people (i.e. *I*) have a hard time comprehending things...
Overall comments: This is not a light, carefree read. It's dark and painful and a bit dense at times, but I'm definitely glad I read it. I started out trying to mark all of the sentences I thought were wonderful, but I ended up having to stop because there were so many. In addition to repeated descriptive phrases that are gorgeous in their simplicity, the characters say things like this to each other: "You're different, you know. When you touch me, when you look at me...you make the world seem different. Less of a battlefield." There's not much sex in the story, but what's there serves a purpose: those scenes are one part animal wildness and one part awkward, timid bumbling.

Driftwood Overview

What the tide washes in, the past can sweep away. All Dr. Tom Penrose wants is his old life back. He's home in Cornwall after a hellish tour of duty in Afghanistan, but while the village is the same, he isn't. His grip on his control is fragile, and it slips dangerously when Flynn Summers explodes into his life. The vision in tight neoprene nearly wipes them both out in a surfing mishap-and shatters Tom's lonely peace. Flynn is a crash-and-burn in progress, one of only two survivors of a devastating rescue helicopter crash that killed his crew. His carefree charm is merely a cover for the messed-up soul within. The sparks between him and Tom are the first light he's seen in a long, dark tunnel of self-recrimination, which includes living in sexual thrall to fellow crash survivor and former co-pilot, Robert. As their attraction burns through spring and into summer, Tom must confront not only his own shadows, but Flynn's-before the past rises up to swallow his lover whole. Warning: Contains explicit m/m sex, hot helicopter pilots and skin-tight wetsuits. Also, in true British tradition, a tiny bit of joystick innuendo.

Bounty of Love (Love series...) Review

I really need to learn to never buy a book with two 5 star reviews, clearly they were written by friends of the author.
This book had a decent overall concept, I love the FBI agent in love trope, but the level of unprofessional behavior in this was was just too hard to swallow. Not to mention lack of common decency. Who suggests hooking up with someone that lost their spouse two months prior? On top of the questionable behavior of the MC's, the author has the characters using iPhone's and Kindles in 1999. I might have let it slide, but iPhones were mentioned over and over again. And the brand name-dropping was over the top "He unzipped his Lucky jeans"? WTF?
And to top it all off, the writing itself was stilted and clunky.
This is a prequel to two previously published books that I will not be reading, even though, again, the premises of the other books sound good. I just had too many WTF moments in this one that completely took me out of the story to give the author another shot.

Bounty of Love (Love series...) Overview

The night before his wedding, Zander Walsh, his parents, and his husband-to-be are all shot when they return home and interrupt a mysterious robbery in progress. After three weeks in a coma, Zander wakes up to find out he is the only survivor, and his perfect life falls apart in an instant. Hunky FBI Agent Jake Elliot is investigating the case, and he eventually apprehends the killer-who soon escapes. Catch Me If I Fall Review

Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.
Rating: 8/10
PROS:
- Even though the story is short, it has a number of powerful little moments that brought a grin to my face. Some of them come from the main characters' interactions, and others come from the men's interactions with their families.
- For once, there's a child character in a story who amused me rather than annoyed me. Avery's nephew is four, but he's sharp and thus has a lot of "kids say the darnedest things" moments. Knox does a good job of making him cute without seeming like she's trying too hard to make him cuteSY. (Ethan's teenage daughters are rather priceless, too.)
- Avery is a total klutz around Ethan, which I found cute and funny rather than over-the-top or contrived. And Ethan is calm and sexy all the time, just smiling every time Avery does something foolish.
- The sex scene is pretty graphic and pretty hot.
CONS:
- (I actually didn't mind this, but I know some readers don't like it, so...) There's absolutely zero conflict in this story. No angst, no family drama, no lingering doubt as to whether the guys are into each other past Avery's initial confusion about Ethan's sexual orientation. This is about two guys who have been into each other for a while finally getting together. Period.
- Because it's short, there's not a lot of depth to the characters. I *liked* them, but I'm not sure this will be a re-read for me because there's just not enough here for them to really stand out.
Overall comments: This is a great example of a short story that doesn't try to do too much all at once. There are just a few scenes, but there's a lot of sweetness, a lot of romance, and a pretty smokin' hot sex scene at the end. I'd like to see something longer from this author; if she can create characters with a little more depth--and show us a longer stretch of time in their lives--she'll be a writer worth watching for.

Catch Me If I Fall Overview

Less chance of making a fool of himself in front of the man--again--by tripping over his own feet.Despite his best intentions, however, Avery's love life is about as low as a limbo champ can go, until "nice and safe" turns up on his doorstep, with Ethan bearing gifts and a few extra surprises. Suddenly "straight" makes about as much sense as a diagonal."Playing it safe" has always been Avery's motto, but now he has to decide if taking a leap of faith is worth the possibility of not being caught if he falls...Genres: Gay / Contemporary / Romantic Comedy

I Am Not Myself These Days (P.S.) Review

It's New York city in the mid-1990s and our author is an advertising agent by day and a wild drag queen with fish-filled breasts at night. He performs nightly as his Aquadisiac alter-ego, staying out until the wee hours of the morning fueled by vodka, and crams in work the next day before starting all over again. Fortunately, no one can smell the vodka coming out of his pores. Much of his time is spent reconstructing the night before, figuring out where he is waking up, and trying to remember who he talked to and what he did the night before. His advertising campaigns come in brilliant bursts of last-minute energy.
Then comes Jack, the gay male escort who sweeps Josh's life into a semblance of order. Jack loves Aqua and Josh loves Jack. Mid-way through the book, the reader will realize that all the over-the-top orgies, Jack's S&M clients, the drug use, and the rampant alcohol abuse are just fluff around a true love story. Sure, it's titillating to get a glimpse inside alternate lifestyles, but this is truly the story of two misfits who complete eachother. This is a book that will teach you how a drag queen hides his private parts (an entire chapter is devoted to the deconstruction of the male and invention of the female persona), give you every detail about the process of preparing crack in a NY penthouse kitchen, show you the true friendship that develops between Josh and one of Jack's CEO clients who spends weekends tied up on the penthouse floor, and crush your heart with the agony of loving someone who is addicted to drugs. Josh, with his 10-plus vodka-a-day habit, seems like the messed up one in the beginning, but it is Jack who succumbs to addiction, leaving Josh to helplessly look on.
So we have sex, drugs, and club music, mixed up with a love story that got me in the gut by the end of the book...what more could you need? Josh tops this all off with a hilarious and over-the-top narrative voice. When depressed, he fantasizes about being in a Lifetime movie, so he drinks vodka in bed and walks around the apartment alone making declarations about a marriage, mortgage, or the kids. When he lies for a co-worker, he changes his story half a dozen times to make it more "realistic," nevermind that the facts are completely different. He's not an alcoholic, he's a social catalyst, someone who gets paid to illustrate the chemical process of drinking to other partygoers. When he wakes up to a crack-high Jack standing over him with a knife, Josh complains that he just got the expensive knife for Christmas. Jack changes his mind about the murder-suicide he had planned, and Josh goes back to sleep, reminding him to put the knife back in the rack so it doesn't rust.
As over-the-top as this narrative is, it is in no way implausible (I need to make this statement because James Frey wrote a cover blurb). The story of Jack's present to Josh for his first New York Christmas will touch even the most hardened reader. Truly, this book is Josh's tribute to a man he loved for one unforgettable year in New York city. If you enjoy this, try the darker tale of Ron Nyswaner`s love for a male escort in the book Blue Days, Black Nights.

Finding Forgiveness Review

Briefly, Ben and Dave are supposed to be mates. However, despite efforts on Dave's part Ben has stayed away and they have never consummated their relationship. Ben has made assumptions about Dave that are unfounded which end up having consequences. Dave on the other hand has decided he is done waiting for Ben and intends to go find a new partner to assuage his misery. Ben comes to his senses because the big misunderstanding is clarified with the threat of being kicked out of the pack. Ben goes to Disney to find Dave, he apologizes, wears a shirt, them have sex. They go home and everyone is okay and makes jokes at the end.
It was a cute story and I would probably have been fine with it except for the fact that I expect more from the author and the price. This book was so short, and the last 20% of it was made up of samples from other Samhain books including the same book. For the subject material and the price I expected more. Also, if you have not read the other books in the Halle series, you would not know which way to turn or how this world or relationships works. So it's not a story that is complete in and of itself.
The actual story is 1356/1688 locations. So it's pretty darn short. I have read the other books involving this world in the past and liked them. However, there was barely an inkling that these two were meant to be together. So when I heard theirs was the next book, I was curious to see how it evolved. Honestly, they deserved more time because I had a really hard time accepting years of mistrust and recriminations being cleared out over a week of sex, mating bond or not. To me, the issues in terms of old trauma from an alcoholic parent and migraines (presumably secondary to another misunderstanding) are not the kinds of things you work out in a few weeks. Essentially, the story overall strained my disbelief, especially the miraculous disappearance of the severe hospitalizing migraines after the official mating. I get the feeling the author was trying to say that they occurred because of the unfulfilled bond and misunderstandings but I couldn't sustain that. I could really see the blackmail behavior potential, oh if you aren't nice to me, I will have another migraine. In essence I have a hard time believing that at the end of the day these two would really be able to stay together and be happy, bond or no.

Finding Forgiveness Overview

To forgive is divine'if he can pin his lover down long enough to beg for it. Poconos Pack, Book 1Ben Malone's role as Marshall attunes him to every nuance of the pack's wellbeing-which means he's forced to feel every one of his mate's hangovers. It's the one reason Ben will never claim Dave Maldonado. Being alone is better than being with someone who lives in a bottle. Dave was destined to be a pack Alpha until his first migraine hit at age fifteen, the day he caught his future mate holding hands with another boy. In the nine agonizing years since, he's contented himself as Beta, but never learned to live with the pain and confusion of Ben's rejection. Dave's worst attack yet sends him to the hospital-and brings them both face to face with the misunderstanding that's kept them apart all these years. It's too late, though. Dave is headed for Gay Pride Week at Disney World with one goal in mind. Forget Ben Malone. Ben's got a problem with that. Only one man is destined to hold his David. And he'll give anything, even his last shred of pride, to win forgiveness-and the right to finally claim his mate. Warning: This book contains explicit sex, graphic language, and male/male love scenes between two top dogs. Who knew Rock Paper Scissors could be such fun?

Hot Head Review

This one is a wonderful surprise. Not the usual at all. There is a raw intensity in the writing which I find captivating. So what if certain phases are overboard. It just gives the guys' story that much extra punch.
I could never resist a M/M romance firefighters story. There is just something so sensual and sexy about these hunks and they are heroes. And this is who Griff and Dante are. Like the first reviewer, I love the way the writer blend the "9-11" tragedy into their story. Griff and Dante were there and because of that these two firefighters seemed so real to me.
The story is told from Griff's POV but we get to know Dante just as well. I love both characters as they struggle with the realization that their love for one another is far beyond between brothers or best friends. These guys' chemistry is palpable, their love story intense and gritty. As for the sex,wow..
From the description I was worried the sex could be too much but how wrong I was. This is foremost about emotions, raw, intense and gritty emotions. There is a marvelous plot here from the time Griff is "adopted" by Dante's caring family, the boys blossoming into best buddies, covering for each other, Griff's struggle to overcome the painful impact of "9-11", Dante's dare devilled attitude and Griff's solid presence in his life...So much to marvel about these guys.
Oh yes, back to the sex. When it happens it just sizzles. Very hot. This is coming from someone like me who has got into the mundane habit of fast forwarding sex scenes. No fast forwarding here at all. There is that one chapter in which the writer lovingly describes one of the guy's body, posts and postures, which I find so hot and sexy. Yet there is an underlying melancholy too when one paramedic is so horribly "gay-bashed", which could easily happen to one of them. While I am satisfied with the ending, I do hope there is a sequel soon. As for the supporting characters they are just as likable from one Russian owner of "Hot Head" to one charming little girl. This MM romance is definitely a winner among the many being churned out every day.

Hot Head Overview

Where there's smoke, there's fire... Since 9/11, Brooklyn firefighter Griff Muir has wrestled with impossible feelings for his best friend and partner at Ladder 181, Dante Anastagio. Unfortunately, Dante is strictly a ladies' man, and the FDNY isn't exactly gay-friendly. For ten years, Griff has hidden his heart in a half-life of public heroics and private anguish. Griff's caution and Dante's cockiness make them an unbeatable team. To protect his buddy, there's nothing Griff wouldn't do' until a nearly bankrupt Dante proposes the worst possible solution: HotHead.com, a gay porn website where uniformed hunks get down and dirty. And Dante wants them to appear there-together. Griff may have to guard his heart and live out his darkest fantasies on camera. Can he rescue the man he loves without wrecking their careers, their families, or their friendship?

Something Like Summer Review

I'm currently halfway through reading this book and had to stop just to take it all in. It's amazing. So much better than any other "gay story" I've ever read. It's inspiring, heartbreaking, and thoughtful. I find myself smiling while reading it and laughing at some witty humor, but I also find myself with watery eyes. The characters are so well thought out, so real, that I can't help but believe that they actually exist somewhere. Like I said, I'm only halfway through and I'm already in love. My only concern now is whether or not Jay Bell is going to seek out the movie deal that is well deserved for a story as heartfelt and daring as this. A story like this needed to be told. Gay teens are out, they are being taunted, but they are also having sex, and for too long we've had to choose between stories of romanticism, sex, and coming-of-age. Thankfully, this book now provides all three in a manner that is real, not merely fantasy. If you don't read this book, you're missing out. But, like I said, I just want it to become popular so a year or two down the road I can watch a few cute actors play out this story!

Something Like Summer Overview

Love, like everything in the universe, cannot be destroyed. But over time it can change. The hot Texas nights were lonely for Ben before his heart began beating to the rhythm of two words; Tim Wyman. By all appearances, Tim had the perfect body and ideal life, but when a not-so-accidental collision brings them together, Ben discovers that the truth is rarely so simple. If winning Tim's heart was an impossible quest, keeping it would prove even harder as family, society, and emotion threaten to tear them apart.Something Like Summer is a love story spanning a decade and beyond as two boys discover what it means to be friends, lovers, and sometimes even enemies.

Giovanni's Room Review

Now and then it is healthy and rewarding AND enlightening to revisit some of the books in our libraries that are time-tested, durable pinnacles of literature. Such is the case of opening the cover of James Baldwin's inimitable, cherished novel GIOVANNI'S ROOM. Baldwin died in Paris in 1987 after gifting us with great novels and strong social commmentary. It is only fitting to return to the Paris of this wonderfully rich novel when the need to reflect on how writers of stature had the courage to begin the genre of novels dealing with same sex relationships in a manner of pure literature.
GIOVANNI'S ROOM is a fluid, nonlinear exploration of alienation: the narrator is living in Paris (having escaped the US with the smilingly shallow American image descried by Parisians), heads toward a "comfortably normal courtship/engagement" with a very normal fellow American girl also living in Paris/Spain, and quite by accident encounters his repressed sexual self when he meets Giovanni, an expatriated Italian. The subcultures Baldwin details are palpably present on every page - many characters seem like enemies until their roles in the journey of these two men unfold and clarify. The title of the book is well chosen: Giovanni's room which he shares with David our narrator is claustrophobic, unkempt, dour, and threatening - an apt description of the mental environment this stumbling act of finding a new type of love creates. Baldwin lets us know from the start that we are entering a doomed affair of the heart and it is this atmospheric, eloquently written memoir that adds to the sense of the inevitable isolation that makes this a great novel.
Enough cannot be said about the beauty of Baldwin's prose, the richness of his terse description of the city of Paris, his uncanny ability to paint characters that are wholly three-dimensional. This book merits frequent re-visits. It is a rare vintage wine.

Dream Boy: A Novel Review

The last time a book affected me this much ... well ... suffice it to say that it's been a long time.
First things first. I wish I wrote it.
It's the only novel I've ever read that I'm truly, genuinely envious of.
The writing is sensual but succint, the words lyrical but moderate. I actually became breathless while reading.
Secondly, and perhaps most importantly, it's a love story between two boys, and neither the word 'gay' nor the phrase 'I love you' is ever used.
Sure, there's touching, kissing, sex, teenage awkwardness, guilt, fear, even discrimination. But nothing beyond narrative emotion + action speaks of the nature of it. No labels, clichés, or assumptions. It's just simple, perfect, and beautiful.
I want to cradle this book like a baby.

The Peculiar Memories of Thomas Penman Review

The Peculiar Memories of Thomas Penman may be peculiar to those who have forgotten that bizarre landscape of wide-eyed, hormone-driven adolesence through which we all passed, but to this reader the rites of passage facing the 14 year old have rarely been so candidly captured. Thomas Penman has strange behaviors, but as his creator Robinson relates them, they all serve as seeds to explain with great wit and empathy the results of Thomas' coming of age. This is a wonderful little book that reads rapidly (as in difficult to put it down), entertains us with outrageous situations, then ties a series of clues to the Everyman question of Who Am I and How Did I Get Here? into a deeply touching finale. These characters are unforgetable - everyone of them from the main character, his best friend Maurice, the Vicar Potts, the psychic Olanda, the radiantly drawn Gwendolin, and of course Walter his Grandfather. A wonderful excursion and addition to the READ THIS List for teenagers. Suggestion: Don't let the language in the first chapter throw you off course: it is there for a reason!
