The Truth About SIX PACK ABS - Years of research into body fat reduction and abdominal development all combined into your own personal six pack guide Review

I used to often buy all the workout magazines you see in the stores. Abs in 4 weeks! Eat the junk and still get a six pack! All these cover stories get you to buy the magazine, but in reality these are unrealistic goals. Sure if you run 15 miles a days and were to eat just grapes and prune juice you would lose weight, but hardly anyone has the time to do these plans or would want to eat such boring food for any protracted period of time. I have brought many workout books over the years and they tend to concentrate on the exercises and when it comes to diet its eat more protein, eat less junk, thanks for the cash, see you later.
This book is different. Unlike the recycled articles in the magazines written by pot-bellied journalists. Achieving a six pack is within your grasp if you have the discipline to stick to the principles laid down in this book.
The exercise section is well thought out and easy to follow, the diet section is in depth but straightforward.

Escape from the World Trade Center (Ebook Short) Review

This is a quick read which is not easy to put down, but I found myself reading slowly in order to absorb its enormity.
It is at once a look at: the tragedy of 9/11, the workings of the human mind/spirit as it experiences this level of trauma, the sudden realization/affirmation of what is really important in life, the role of religious belief in the life of one who had firm religious belief before living through these events.... all in an amazingly short span of writing.
The gravity of the story is retold through beautiful writing. Putting this into the written word to be read by others is gutsy, and should be respected. I found myself nodding at her recognition that the firefighters probably knew they weren't coming back.... I always believed that. They appeared to have made a choice. This was not simply a matter of "doing their job". You could see it in the eyes of the fireman whose haunting photo came from those stairs after the tragedy.
One note: The book is full of bible references, and other religious notations. Although I share neither her specific religion nor her solid religious orientation, in this case, the references did not bother me, nor did I find them intrusive in her telling of her story.
Thank you to the author for her sharing as we approach the tenth anniversary.

A Life in Stitches: Knitting My Way Through Love, Loss, and Laughter Review

Literate, knitter (OK, that's almost redundant), engaging.
My own disclaimer: I think I've only ever met two knitting books I didn't like. A Life in Stitches is emphatically NOT one of them.
Great book. A younger woman's life, (IMO) a younger woman's knitting. Will like to read what happens when she leaves the patterns behind and steps out on her own. Given the progression described in her knitting, it will come.
Incidentally, the last chapter describes Rachael working on a sweater, the pattern to which will be included in the book. The pattern in my copy of the book (close to pre-release) was not that sweater.
I'm (almost) envious of people who can knit sweaters to wear; where I live, we have about four months of sweater weather. We knit lace curtains and screen doors and rugs and other things (Mason Dixon knitting). However, the actual garment / item is not important to the stories, mostly.
+1 for someone who doesn't fuss over socks and who simply knocks them out. Tube, turn, tube, finish. How hard is it?
Spoiler alert: The author tried spinning, and loved it. If you (like me) have resisted spinning for fear of another textile art black hole, skip the "Maidens and Flyers" chapter. My friends have alpacas, and sheep. I hear that siren call. (If Rachael writes another book, somebody please warn me if she gets a loom...)
Finally, I LOVE the design of this book! Real stitching, so it opens smoothly all the way through, front to back. Excellent typography. Book design by Allison Weiner, a first (for me) with this designer. I started keeping notes of designers a year ago when I finally noticed how much easier it was to read books that were well-designed. Not every publisher gives their designer credit; all should (or perhaps not, to protect the guilty). If I'm reading a book in one sitting, which I did with A Life in Stitches, at least some of the credit goes to the designer. Unfortunately, if a book's badly designed, it hits the "return" pile (library) pretty quickly, regardless of the potential quality of the author's work.
If part of your joy of knitting is the feeling of the fabric coming off the needles over your hand, you'll love the way the paper version of this book feels to hold and read.

A Life in Stitches: Knitting My Way Through Love, Loss, and Laughter Overview

In these 20 heartfelt essays, Rachael Herron celebrated romance novelist by day, 911 dispatcher by night, and founder of the hugely popular blog Yarnagogo.com shows how when life unravels there s always a way to knit it back together again, many times into something even better. Honest, funny, and full of warmth, Herron s tales, each inspired by something she knit or something knit for her, will speak to anyone who has ever picked up a pair of needles. From her very first sweater (a hilarious disaster, to say the least) to the yellow afghan that caused a breakup (and, ultimately, a breakthrough), every piece has a moving story behind it. This beautifully crafted and candid collection is perfect for the knitter who loves to read and the reader who loves to knit.

Thunder Dog: The True Story of a Blind Man, His Guide Dog, and the Triumph of Trust at Ground Zero Review

With the events of 9/11 forever etched in my memory, I was eager to read "Thunder Dog" by Michael Hingson with Suzy Flory. As the subtitle tells, it's "The True Story of a Blind Man, His Guide Dog & the Triumph of Trust at Ground Zero."
Reading a story about a man who survived the September 11th terrorist attack on the World Trade Center is compelling enough. But add to the story the fact that the man, Michael Hingson, is blind, has a guide dog Roselle and has to descend 78 stories on foot to get to safety and you have a gripping survival account by an unforgettable pair.
The story is well told, with a moment by moment account of Michael and Roselle's escape, along with colleague David Frank from their office located on the 78th floor in Tower I of the World Trade Center. Interspersed with the details of that fateful day are stories of Michael's life.
Michael was born two months premature and was blind due to pure oxygen he received as part of the standard medical treatment for premature babies. Michael parents didn't listen to the doctor's advice about putting him in a home for the blind. Instead they brought him home and raised their son no differently from his older brother Ellery. Before he ever had a guide dog or white cane, Michael was expected to grow, learn and explore his neighborhood on his own two feet. This boy had a spirit of adventure and he learned to ride a bike and even drive a car. Michael's feisty can-do spirit helped to prepared him to survive the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.
Through Michael's story we learn about the bond between a blind person and their guide dog. Roselle is a special dog and was able to keep her focus and concentrate on guiding her master down 78 flights of stairs and through the streets of New York filled with debris and a monstrous toxin filled dust cloud that pursued survivors running from the World Trade Center.
I highly recommend this book. It was a gripping, interesting and unique story of survival by Michael Hingson and his guide dog Roselle. "Thunder Dog" is a touching and memorable book.
I received this book free from the publisher through the [...] book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255 : "Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising."

Thunder Dog: The True Story of a Blind Man, His Guide Dog, and the Triumph of Trust at Ground Zero Overview

A blind man and his guide dog show the power of trust and courage in the midst of devastating terror. It was12:30 a.m.on 9/11 and Roselle whimpered at Michael's bedside. A thunderstorm was headed east, and she could sense the distant rumbles while her owners slept. As a trained guide dog, when she was "on the clock" nothing could faze her. But that morning, without her harness, she was free to be scared, and she nudged Michael's hand with her wet nose as it draped over the bedside toward the floor. She needed him to wake up.With a busy day of meetings and an important presentation ahead, Michael slumped out of bed, headed to his home office, and started chipping away at his daunting workload. Roselle, shivering, took her normal spot at his feet and rode out the storm while he typed. By all indications it was going to be a normal day. A busy day, but normal nonetheless. Until theywent into the office. In Thunder Dog, follow Michael and his guide dog, Roselle, as their lives are changed forever by two explosions and 1,463 stairs. When the first plane struck Tower One, an enormous boom, frightening sounds, and muffled voices swept through Michael's office while shards of glass and burning scraps of paper fell outside the windows. But in this harrowing story of trust and courage, discover how blindness and a bond between dog and man saved lives and brought hope during one of America's darkest days.

I HEARD THE SIRENS SCREAM: How Americans Responded to the 9/11 and Anthrax Attacks Review

Laurie Garrett's new book is about the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, the subsequent anthrax attacks by mail, and their effects on America during the past decade. More than a terrific book, "I Heard the Sirens Scream" is a monument to a period. Garrett began writing on the day the Twin Towers fell. She made her way into lower Manhattan that day and most other days during the next four months. From that vantage she wrote a daily missive, as she calls it, plying her skills as a premier reporter and science writer. But woven into commentaries of heroism and missteps are her freely expressed emotions. A reader cannot help but share Garrett's grief about lost lives, her rage at the perpetrators, and pride in New York's selfless rescue workers.
Much of Garrett's narrative is also devoted to the spread of anthrax spores via threat letters that were mailed in the wake of 9/11. Spores showed up in scores of post offices and other buildings along the east coast. The Capitol, Pentagon, Supreme Court, and Federal Reserve were closed at various times in October and November, because of suspected or actual anthrax contamination. While the bioterrorism attacks claimed "only" five lives, millions of Americans worried about opening their mail.
Like those who unknowingly inhaled the poisonous bacteria, people near Ground Zero inhaled air filled with particles of glass and asbestos. Many firefighters, police, and other rescue workers later developed respiratory illnesses, apparently as a result of their exposure. They had not received special masks and protective gear because, as Garrett recounts, federal officials had falsely declared the air safe to breathe.
Garrett further criticizes the continuing failure of the nation's political leadership to provide adequate funding for public health. But she laments most deeply the change that terrorism has wrought on our collective psyche. People never grow accustomed to fear, she writes. Our citizenry has been scarred emotionally by the terrorist experiences. But she also points to the demonstrated possibilities of resilience. Most of us, she believes, are "able to process horrors revisited, threats renewed and challenges as they arise." This compelling book is not to be missed.

I HEARD THE SIRENS SCREAM: How Americans Responded to the 9/11 and Anthrax Attacks Overview

For most of my adult life I have borne witness. It's what I won a Pulitzer Prize for, years ago. I go to epidemics, wars, places where people are struggling to cope with disasters, and I carefully log the accounts and events, trying to represent the lives and experiences of others. The position of “outsider" is emotionally safe, even as agonizing events unfold. But I could not distance myself from the extraordinary sequence of events that fell on America, and especially my home town of New York City, in 2001. A decade later I am still trying to understand how the attacks on the World Trade Center and the anthrax mailings affected me, and those I love. I heard the first jet slam into the north tower of the World Trade Center, and from the rooftop of my apartment building watched the second commercial jet veer towards lower Manhattan, change its trajectory, and slice across the upper floors of the south tower. I was standing on the Manhattan anchorage of the Brooklyn Bridge when the first tower crumbled like a deflated accordion, spewing dust and debris in every direction and crushing the life out of thousands of people within. And a month later, as people started falling ill from inhalation of anthrax spores, one of the nation's top bioterrorism experts called me to warn that I was a likely target: Stop opening your mail. The flow of these events, from the hijacking of four commercial jets on September 11th to the November death of an anthrax-infected Connecticut villager, took most of the world population from a remarkably united emotional and political place, to a deeply divided, frustrated, angry position. The arc of the response matters: It ultimately determined the course of historic events worldwide and tore America asunder, the people having lost trust in their government and without it, most forms of social cohesion. By the end of the winter of 2002 the arc had completed, from spectacular unity and confidence in governance to deep division and accusations of American arrogance. Through the frustrated anthrax investigations and drumbeats of war, the global community, especially Americans, moved in just a few months' time from collectivism to fragmentation. This book is structured in two parts. The first, THE END OF THE AGE OF INNOCENCE, is written in the present tense, describing almost hourly the events that unfolded primarily in Washington DC and New York City over 120 days in the fall and winter of 2001 and 2002. Each day is a chapter that opens with the actual diary entry that I sent on that date to a list of friends all over the world. The entry is followed by a detailed breakdown of the day's events, unfolding like a novel.Part two, NEW WORLD ORDER, details the repercussions of these events, transformations of critical government institutions, public health disasters, and what, in particular, the specter of terrorism meant for the American people. Revelations abound in this book, including:' The bizarre chemistry of The Plume that rose from the burning crushed World Trade Center for four months, endangering the health of hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers.' Evidence that al-Qaeda may have been behind the anthrax mailings.' Devastating spending and restructuring followed the attacks, leaving the nation less prepared for terrorism ten years later, and broke.' Each incident following the opening of anthrax-laden letters reveals countless errors and misjudgments.' There was no “weapons-grade anthrax" in those letters - a finding with profound health and political implications.

Hot Head Review

This one is a wonderful surprise. Not the usual at all. There is a raw intensity in the writing which I find captivating. So what if certain phases are overboard. It just gives the guys' story that much extra punch.
I could never resist a M/M romance firefighters story. There is just something so sensual and sexy about these hunks and they are heroes. And this is who Griff and Dante are. Like the first reviewer, I love the way the writer blend the "9-11" tragedy into their story. Griff and Dante were there and because of that these two firefighters seemed so real to me.
The story is told from Griff's POV but we get to know Dante just as well. I love both characters as they struggle with the realization that their love for one another is far beyond between brothers or best friends. These guys' chemistry is palpable, their love story intense and gritty. As for the sex,wow..
From the description I was worried the sex could be too much but how wrong I was. This is foremost about emotions, raw, intense and gritty emotions. There is a marvelous plot here from the time Griff is "adopted" by Dante's caring family, the boys blossoming into best buddies, covering for each other, Griff's struggle to overcome the painful impact of "9-11", Dante's dare devilled attitude and Griff's solid presence in his life...So much to marvel about these guys.
Oh yes, back to the sex. When it happens it just sizzles. Very hot. This is coming from someone like me who has got into the mundane habit of fast forwarding sex scenes. No fast forwarding here at all. There is that one chapter in which the writer lovingly describes one of the guy's body, posts and postures, which I find so hot and sexy. Yet there is an underlying melancholy too when one paramedic is so horribly "gay-bashed", which could easily happen to one of them. While I am satisfied with the ending, I do hope there is a sequel soon. As for the supporting characters they are just as likable from one Russian owner of "Hot Head" to one charming little girl. This MM romance is definitely a winner among the many being churned out every day.

Hot Head Overview

Where there's smoke, there's fire... Since 9/11, Brooklyn firefighter Griff Muir has wrestled with impossible feelings for his best friend and partner at Ladder 181, Dante Anastagio. Unfortunately, Dante is strictly a ladies' man, and the FDNY isn't exactly gay-friendly. For ten years, Griff has hidden his heart in a half-life of public heroics and private anguish. Griff's caution and Dante's cockiness make them an unbeatable team. To protect his buddy, there's nothing Griff wouldn't do' until a nearly bankrupt Dante proposes the worst possible solution: HotHead.com, a gay porn website where uniformed hunks get down and dirty. And Dante wants them to appear there-together. Griff may have to guard his heart and live out his darkest fantasies on camera. Can he rescue the man he loves without wrecking their careers, their families, or their friendship?

Rafa Review

First the disclaimer: I'm a sold out Rafa Nadal fan. I appreciate everything about his game but, even more what is seen as him the person. In an age of Egos larger than life in professional sports, and lifestyles that overstep the limits of decency, Rafa could not be more different. This book not only outlines this as fact, but reinforces what many would take for granted these days; there are few things more priceless than a strong family.
In terms of reading this from a tennis player's perspective, this is not a book about technique. However, Rafa's first-person account of what he was saying to himself, what his mental success and failure points were, is in my perspective, in the same league with, if not of more practical use, than The Inner Game of Tennis, Winning Ugly by Brad Gilbert, or any other book that addresses the mental approach to tennis. There is a tremendous amount to learn from his approach.
Second disclaimer: The book has only been out for 24 hours and I'm only 2/3 of the way through it. Specifically, the book is just starting to discuss the 2010 US Open. But, I can't put it down (Well, in fact I have to. I have to go to work). I'm willing to bet that, if you read about tennis, play tennis, or in any way are interested in Rafa, you'll have the same experience I'm having reading this book.
One last perspective. If there's aver a second book written By Rafa and his team, I hope it's about how he transitions from Tennis to whatever is next in his life. That could be a sequel even more interesting to read.

Rafa Overview

What makes a champion? What does it take to be the best in the world at your sport? Rafael Nadal, one of the greatest players in the history of tennis, has the answers. In his memoir, written with award-winning journalist John Carlin, he reveals the secrets of his game and shares the inspiring personal story behind his success. It begins in Mallorca, a small island on the Mediterranean Sea, where the tight-knit Nadal family has lived for generations. Coached by his uncle Toni from the age of four, taught humility and respect by his parents, cherished by his exceptionally close extended family, Nadal has managed the uncommon feat of becoming an acclaimed global celebrity while remaining an unfailingly gracious, relentlessly hardworking role model for people in all walks of life.Since he embarked on his tennis career ten years ago, the twenty-five-year-old Nadal has had a meteoric rise, becoming the youngest professional tennis player ever to win all four Grand Slam titles. He collected his first one, the French Open, in 2005 at age nineteen, and from there went on to win Wimbledon, the Australian Open, and, most difficult of all, the U.S. Open in 2010. His memoir takes us behind the scenes, sharing the highs and lows of his career, from winning the Wimbledon 2008 final, described by John McEnroe as “ the greatest game of tennis" he had ever seen, to the family problems that brought him low in 2009 and the numerous injuries that have threatened his career. With candor, heart, and intelligence, Rafael Nadal takes readers on his life' s dramatic and triumphant journey, never losing sight along the way of the prize he values above all others: the unity and love of his family. From RAFA:"During a match, you are in a permanent battle to fight back your everyday vulnerabilities, bottle up your human feelings. The more bottled up they are, the greater your chances of winning, so long as you' ve trained as hard as you play and the gap in talent is not too wide between you and your rival. The gap in talent with Federer existed, but it was not impossibly wide. It was narrow enough, even on his favorite surface in the tournament he played best, for me to know that if I silenced the doubts and fears, and exaggerated hopes, inside my head better than he did, I could beat him. You have to cage yourself in protective armor, turn yourself into a bloodless warrior. It' s a kind of self-hypnosis, a game you play, with deadly seriousness...
