Never Buried (Leigh Koslow Mystery Series) Review

In addition to the great mystery plot, I enjoyed the setting and the characters. Leigh Koslow is very human and very humourous. She is also more likable, more normal, and more moral than most other single female heroines. Edie Claire's writing reminds me somewhat of Joan Hess. But Joan would have written Maura as the heroine and had the Ozarks instead of Pittsburgh as the setting. I would like to read more about Maura (the police woman)and her mother. In fact the book explores three very different mother /daughter relationships: Cara has 'cut the cord' and married, Maura left but returned to care for her mom, and Leigh is still entangled in breaking that cord. I look forward to reading more about these six women.

Never Buried (Leigh Koslow Mystery Series) Overview

"A funny, fast-paced, clever, and unusual mystery that will have readers clamoring for more. Sheer delight." --Carolyn Hart"A thoroughly delightful debut. Bright, breezy, and witty. I couldn't put it down."--Tamar MyersThe truth about what happened in 1949 went to Paul Fischer's grave... Too bad his body didn't!Advertising copywriter Leigh Koslow doesn't pack heat--just a few extra pounds. And she doesn't go looking for trouble. When she moved into her cousin Cara's refurbished Victorian house, she wasn't planning on discovering a corpse--certainly not one that had been embalmed ten years before. But as anyone in the small Pittsburgh borough of Avalon could tell her, her cousin's house has a history attached. A history dating back to two mysterious deaths in the summer of 1949.Someone wants Leigh and Cara out of the house--someone who has something to hide. But that someone doesn't know Leigh's impetuous cousin, and when Cara digs her heels in, Leigh looks to her old college chum, local policewoman Maura Polanski, for help. But the answers the trio find only point to more questions. Were the scandalous deaths of fifty years ago really an accident and a suicide? Or were they murder? The nearer the women get to the truth, the more desperate someone becomes. Because some secrets are better off kept. Especially when they hit close to home!Originally published in mass market paperback by NAL/Penguin, Putnam, Inc. in 1999. Large-Print Edition published by Thorndike, 2002.

The Rose Killer Review

We've all been lured by the description of the idyllic small town, where everyone you meet is friendly and helpful. Where you can walk a few blocks to the Post Office for a chat while you mail a package, or drop into the local diner for a quick lunch with friends. Where everyone you meet on the street gives you a warm greeting. But how would you react if you found out your next door neighbor, that great guy you knew growing up, might be a serial killer? Or the mailman you've chatted with over the years and even given your fresh-baked cookies, suddenly acts far more menacing? This is the small town Ms. Gragg writes about with such authenticity. Best friends might not be your friend at all, the babysitter down the block might turn out to be your worst nightmare. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will be looking for more from this author.

The Rose Killer Overview

What readers are saying:"The Rose Killer is clever, chilling and deliciously disturbing.""I read at work, at Lunch, Home anywhere I could because I didnt want to put it down.""In the tradition of Hitchcock and Capote, this book is all the more chilling because of the intrusion of terror into ordinary small-town life." A small Kansas town. A serial killer.A young widow tormented by unanswered questions. Was Valerie Yates' late husband, a police officer, hunting for the Rose Killer on his own? What was his relationship with the beautiful young woman who was the Rose Killer's third victim? Valerie's search for the truth uncovers the dark secrets of her idyllic little town and puts her squarely in the Rose Killer's path. The question now is: Will she survive?

A Thousand Tomorrows & Just Beyond The Clouds Omnibus Review

I've never read a Karen Kingsbury book that I didn't like. The heart she puts in the development of her characters has always touched me and I don't believe I've ever read one of her books without shedding some tears. "A Thousand Tomorrows" certainly was no different. However what I did notice was different about this novel was the abscence of reference to scripture. In previous books scripture tended to be threaded througout the entire book. This just wasn't the case in this novel. Again, I certainly still enjoyed the book a great deal and read it in one sitting because as usual, Karen's characters drew me in and gripped my heart. There just seem to be a change in this book from her previous books. With that said, I learned that Karen's books don't have to meantion specific scripture to teach us all lessons about the love of God. Incredible author.

A Killing Tide (Columbia River Thriller) Review

Many times, a writer's first novel is good, but can have inconsistencies that are hopefully addressed as the author matures in his or her craft. Maybe one of the characters is underdeveloped. Or a weird glitch in the plot happens that doesn't make sense. Or too much backstory might be crammed into the present tense.
Fortunately for her readers, P.J. Alderman's first novel, A Killing Tide, doesn't suffer first-time jitters. In this suspense novel with a strong romantic subplot, Alderman introduces diverse characters, mixes them up with plots upon subplots, and sets it all against the backdrop of small-town Astoria, Oregon. Better still, she makes it work.
The book's heroine Kaz Jorgenson is a woman who, despite her plushy job as a consultant to Fortune 500 companies in San Francisco, has salt water running through her veins and the love of the ocean in her heart. When Kaz is called home to Astoria to help brother Gary Jorgenson with hot water he's drowning in, she stumbles into more than she'd bargained for. Like . . . a family friend murdered. Like . . . one of her family's trawlers set on fire to cover the dirty deed. Like . . . her brother disappearing and becoming the number-one suspect in the case.
Enter Michael Chapman from Boston who is Astoria's new fire chief and a trained arson investigator to boot. While trying to solve the murder-arson-disappearing brother mystery, he becomes attracted to Kaz. But Michael doesn't want to get involved with Kaz because she's the number-one suspect's sister. And Kaz doesn't want to get involved with Michael because she thinks he's out to bust her brother.
But the book is about more than the hero and heroine playing cat-and-mouse with one another while they sort out their emotions. Michael and Kaz's growing relationship fits seamlessly into the overall whole, making this not a love story with a plot stuck around it for fun, but an intense mystery in which two people are trying to find the truth about a murder, and love develops as a consequence.
Another plus are Alderman's highly likeable characters. Michael is a flawed, tortured hero, but the reader isn't constantly beaten over the head with it. Michael acts like a normal individual who is working through his trauma, rather than someone who constantly descends into sackcloth and ashes for what he did in the past. And Kaz is a strong woman with a good heart who carries her own share of guilt. But again, Alderman achieves balance with her. She isn't some impossible heroine fulfilling some impossible ideal. She's a flesh-and-blood person who -- surprise! -- stumbles occasionally.
Adding to the richness of the novel are the secondary characters. Kaz's best friend Lucy is extremely well-defined; and this writer hopes Alderman will consider a sequel with her in it. Bjorn and Chuck, two of Gary's staunchest allies, are also wonderfully developed and almost strong enough to carry the book on their own. Even Zeke, Michael's German Shepherd, has a winning personality and charm to add a few humorous moments to an otherwise intense story.
In short, Alderman has done very well with this debut novel. If the adage is true that there's nowhere to go but up, her next effort should be well-anticipated and just as strong.

Take the Monkeys and Run (A Barbara Marr Murder Mystery) Review

A soccer mom with three children and a just-moved-out spouse discovers monkeys in her yard, a head in unpleasant condition in the house next door, and more excitement that a soccer mom in a pleasant neighborhood should expect. There's an ex-boyfriend PI, a policeman who looks like Brad Pitt, and a really obnoxious mother. Oh, and the mafia might be involved. And somehow, it kind of makes sense.
This was very entertaining and a quick read. I really liked Barb, and I hope to read more about her and her adventures.

Ms America and the Offing on Oahu (Ms America Mysteries, No. 1) Review

I recently read Ms. Dempsey's Falling Star and loved it, so I decided to check out her latest book. I have to say, I enjoyed this one just as much -- perhaps even more. Once again, Ms. Dempsey has created a spunky, resourceful heroine who, despite her status as a perennial participant in beauty pageants, is still very much an underdog, which made me root for her even more. The murder mystery she becomes embroiled in manages to be both comical and nail-biting, and the identity of the killer kept me guessing all the way. Add to that a wickedly fun cast of supporting characters and an exotic Hawaii locale and you've got a perfect summer beach read.
