The Postmortal: A Novel Review

This is the second novel from Drew Magary, he has created a fantastic new world that starts in 2019 with a brilliant idea. A scientist accidentally finds the cure for ageing - not death but ageing - eat your heart out L'oreal. This does not stop you dieing, you can still get sick. Get cancer and be killed.
Our hero is John Farrell who keeps a journal and text files on his WEPS 8 (a sort of advanced iPad) which is found years later by the Bureau of Containment and it still works! His story and that of the world, is told through his entries and news blogs and other media sources from the time period, which spans sixty years.
What starts out as a brilliant almost humanitarian venture, for instance this is a cure to all ageing diseases, such as Alzheimer's; soon becomes a bit dystopian. If no-one ages then no-one dies, people become post mortals with two ages, like sixty five with a rebirth age of twenty seven. The moral arguments were not fully researched before the universal clamour for access to `the cure', meant it was legalised by all governments. This then leads to a whole slew of problems, with population explosions, new cults to the Church of Man, `organics', who want to grow old and die naturally. What happens to pensions? What happens to healthcare? When do you stop having kids as you will continue to be fertile?
So masses to deal with and Magary does not flinch from the story developing. In actual fact just as you think you have got your head around the latest plot twist, he throws a new development into the mix. As the characters and particularly John Farrell get older (but not visibly) the Worlds' finite resources start to groan under the pressure and ever more inventive ways of holding together the gossamer fabric of society have to be introduced. That is where the End Specialists come in. In a world where no one ages and very few die, there has to be a way to press the exit button. This means having Government sponsored (and paid) Specialists who help you shuffle off your mortal coil.
The morals and principles of John develop with the story and pragmatism wins out over most considerations, for most of the time. However, this is also a tale of love, loss, bereavement, new ways of coping and concepts that we have never thought of let alone considered. There is a feel of John Wyndham about this, in that it does not just deal with the sci-fi element but uses the prose to drive the characters and events, in a way that makes you want to know more and actually engages you with the whole thing.
Magary has done a marvellous job and I just wanted to plough on until I had read it all. He keeps the pace, the surprises and the interest going at full tilt, right up until the last sentence. Seriously, this is just a fantastic read and I think I have gushed too much, but can not recommend this highly enough - just brilliant.

The Postmortal: A Novel Overview

John Farrell is about to get "The Cure." Old age can never kill him now. The only problem is, everything else still can . . . Imagine a near future where a cure for aging is discovered and-after much political and moral debate-made available to people worldwide. Immortality, however, comes with its own unique problems-including evil green people, government euthanasia programs, a disturbing new religious cult, and other horrors. Witty, eerie, and full of humanity, The Postmortal is an unforgettable thriller that envisions a pre-apocalyptic world so real that it is completely terrifying.

KILLER Review

I literally could not put this book down. I'm a huge Stephen King fan, but this is even better, I swear. I don't know if it's Carpenter's first book or what, but this guy is amazing. So I hope that he has more of these in him in any case. The ending is fantastic!

KILLER Overview

For fans of Robert Parker's smart but tough-as-nails heroes, screenwriter Stephen Carpenter introduces a new character to the mystery genre, Jack Rhodes. Jack is an author and former boxer who was on his way to literary success when his life was blown apart by the horrific suicide of his fiancee. Devastated, Jack went on a fifteen-month alcoholic spiral into near-oblivion before eventually working past his demons to become a best-selling crime novelist. But just as Jack is finishing his fourth book about a vicious serial killer, the LAPD interrupts his quiet routine with news of what appears to be a copycat murder from his first book. There's just one problem--the murder took place before Jack's book was published. Jack begins to investigate, using techniques he learned through his meticulous research with police and FBI investigators. To his horror, Jack discovers that each of the murders he has imagined are all real...down to the most harrowing details. And Jack is Suspect Number One.Jack winds up on the run, a fugitive haunted by his past and hunted by the very cops and FBI agents he has learned from and befriended. Jack must use every resource he has to prevent the murder of a woman he knows will be next in his series of novels. He must piece together shattered memories from the fragments he recalls during his drunken fifteen-month blackout.Fast-paced and utterly unpredictable, KILLER reads like a rapid-fire crime thriller, with hairpin twists and turns and edge-of-your seat psychological horror. KILLER eludes easy answers to the impossible puzzle Jack must solve, and takes the reader on a journey unlike any other.

Into the Basement Review

I couldn't put this book down. From the beginning I thought, what a different, interesting and creative heroine Norm has created in Kim Bennett. She's not Nancy Drew and we are glad of it. The characters, in all their seediness, become real and you find yourself pulling for someone you normally might not. The descriptions of the San Francisco area are excellent and colorful. The ending has an excellent twist and you wish there were more chapters to read. I can't wait for Kim's next adventure.

Into the Basement Overview

Asian, enjoys torture...Russian, enjoys abduction...Obsession, sexual slavery...Bent woman, Kim Bennett...Into the Basement is Norm Applegate's first book. It's a graphic thriller about two serial killers who steal women and torturethem in the basement. You'll never walk alone at night in the dark!Ever! Into the Basement is approximately 69,000 wordsThis book has been formatted for the KindleIn San Francisco, women are disappearing. Threedetectives pull Kim Bennett into the game. The hunt for a killer. She goesmissing! This is a raw dark story of sadistic people thatpits Kim's physical and mental agility against one of the fastest rising crimesin America, sexual slavery. This is an adult story that has been described as"juicy."Update, Intothe Basement was written in 2006. The publisher did a horrendous job. I was disappointedwith the release. How could they assign this book to a religious editor? Sherefused to continue with the novel because of the nature of the story, sexualabduction and abuse. In January of 2010, I got Basement back. It has beenre-edited and spruced up. Even to this day some people like enough to give it a4 or 5 star, others hate it. Enjoy!Chapter1: Abduction:Someone was hunting a female. Mean, hardened eyes. She left work on time, routine. Susie Smallwood was the target.Torture:Then something hit her teeth. Thenagain.Murder:She was helpless. Bound with grayduct tape across her mouth.
