Riptide Review

More than two years is a long time to wait for a new novel by Michael Prescott. While Final Sins, his last book, was not quite up to the standards to which I hold him accountable, his newest, Riptide, certainly is. This is one meticulously researched book and I felt like I was in on the original Jack the Ripper investigation. I do not want to give away any of the suprises that Mr Prescott has in store for you. Suffice to say the novel is a book that steadily gains momentum up to the time when that final satisfying page is turned. All of the Michael Prescott novels have been well written and suspenseful. If you can find any of them, by all means snap them up. Just as gratifying are the six novels he wrote under the pen name of Brian Harper. Make Michael Prescott a name you look for. Hopefully, all of his books (even the Brian Harper titles) will be made available on Kindle soon! Well done, once again, Mr. Prescott.

Until Proven Guilty (J. P. Beaumont Mysteries) Review

I picked up Until Proven Guilty on a lunch hour in 1985, and was finished with it in less than 2 days. It was to begin what I call my "love affair" with Detective J.P. Beaumont. This novel, was a good read from page one to the end. Jance is by far my favorite author, I own every one of her Beaumont books in hardback, I do not wait for them to come out in paperback. I highly reccommend that you read Until Proven Guilty first, or you will be a bit lost in future books when he refers to his Porsche, Ann Coorley etc. I worked for the Seattle Police in thier Homicide Division, and while Jance does use what I will call creative license with some things, the one thing she nailed is the "cop persona" in spades! I wait eagerly for her next installment. I hope that you like her work as much as I do.

She supports herself by doing deep background investigations for Dragan Armansky, who, in turn, worries the anorexic-looking Lisbeth Salander is "the perfect victim for anyone who wished her ill." Salander may look fourteen and stubbornly shun social norms, but she possesses the inner strength of a determined survivor. She sees more than her word processor page in black and white and despises the users and abusers of this world. She won't hesitate to exact her own unique brand of retribution against small-potatoes bullies, sick predators, and corrupt magnates alike.
Financial journalist Carl Mikael Blomkvist has just been convicted of libeling a financier and is facing a fine and three months in jail. Blomkvist, after a Salander-completed background check, is summoned to a meeting with semi-retired industrialist Henrik Vanger whose far-flung but shrinking corporate empire is wholly family owned. Vanger has brooded for 36 years about the fate of his great niece, Harriet. Blomkvist is expected to live for a year on the island where many Vanger family members still reside and where Harriet was last seen. Under the cover story that he is writing a family history, Blomkvist is to investigate which family member might have done away with the teenager.
So, the stage is set. The reader easily guesses early that somehow Blomkvist and Salander will pool their talents to probe the Vanger mystery. However,Swede Stieg Larsson's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is no humdrum, formulaic whodunit. It is fascinating and very difficult to put down. Nor is it without some really suspenseful and chillingly ugly scenes....
The issue most saturating The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is that of shocking sexual violence primarily against women but not excluding men. Salander and Blomkvist both confront prima facie evidence of such crimes. Larsson's other major constituent elements are corporate malfeasance that threatens complete collapse of stock markets and anarchistic distrust of officialdom to the point of endorsing (at least, almost) vigilantism. He also deals with racism as he spins a complex web from strands of real and imagined history concerning mid-twentieth century Vanger affiliations with Sweden's fascist groups.
But Larsson's carefully calibrated tale is more than a grisly, cynical world view of his country and the modern world at large. At its core, it is an fascinating character study of a young woman who easily masters computer code but for whom human interaction is almost always more trouble than it is worth, of an investigative reporter who chooses a path of less resistance than Salander but whose humanity reaches out to many including her, and of peripheral characters -- such as Armansky -- who need more of their story told.
Fortunately, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in English translation will be followed by two more in the Millennium series: The Girl Who Played with Fire, and The Air Castle that Blew Up. I can't wait. Larsson also made a 200-page start on a fourth book, but sadly he succumbed to a heart attack in 2004 and his father decided the unfinished work will remain unpublished.
I recommend this international bestseller to all who eagerly sift new books for challenging intellectual crime thrillers, who luxuriate in immersing themselves in the ambience of a compellingly created world and memorable characters, who soak up financial and investigative minutiae as well as computer hacking tidbits, and who want to share Larsson's crusade against violence and racism.

I am a die hard Michael Prescott fan & he didn't let me down!! I tend to be a slow reader... but I finished this book in two nights!! I just couldn't put it down!! I literally gasped more than once as this story played out. Trish was a very likable (and MacGyver-esque) heroine!! The story plays out in only a matter of hours with LOTS of twists & turns which gives it somewhat of a "24" feel!! You really start to wonder what else could possibly happen!! It could very easily be a one dimentional story of cat & mouse... but the characters are interesting, easy to love/hate, and the subtle back story develops slowly to a shocking revelation!!! You should be prepared for some strong language and graphic descriptions, but it's worth the read!!

Stealing Faces Review

I must admit that Michael Prescott has a knack for writing a very entertaining prologue! Readers arrive on the scene smack dab in the middle of single mom Sharon Andrews bloodied and running for her life. Unfortunately for Sharon, she's in the prologue...we know what's going to happen to her. And very quickly, so does she.
From a writing standpoint "Stealing Faces" is crisp and reads quickly. A definite plus in this form of novel. The major players of the story are deftly crafted. Poor Elizabeth Palmer, a.k.a. Ellen Pendleton , a.k.a. Paula Nielson, but in reality Kaylie McMillan has been on the run for the better part of twelve years. She is of the opinion that Dr. John Cray is the unstoppable White Mountain Killer. She's absolutely correct, of course. She's also the murderess of her husband Justin McMillan. What Cray does as the White Mountain Killer is rather obvious from the book's title.
Kaylie and Cray play a lot of physical tag in the first portion of the novel. Each trying to remain one step ahead of the other. They spend the second half of the novel playing mental tag. Kaylie and Cray encounter several other interesting people in the course of the story. Namely, Tucson Detective Roy Shepherd and Kaylie's ex-father-in-law Anson McMillan.
My only ever so MINUSCULE complaint is that they really weren't given any more to do but play hide and seek with one another. To go any further into what precisely goes on would be to give away too many spoilers in this well written novel. It's just that things become a bit formulaic towards the end. Cray makes a mistake or two that seem out of character for someone who throughout the rest of the story takes great pride in his meticulousness.
This still does not take away from the fact that there are some clever twists and turns in this story. A fast read that I think many people will find very enjoyable.

This book surprised me on many levels, and I start by saying that I highly recommend it. As a person who likes to savor books, I read this one in two evenings. After Speaking in Tongues, I was a little wary of getting excited about another Jeffery Deaver's book. But as a programmer, I decide to pick it up because it is about something I have an interest in. Wyatt Gillette, a convicted felon, and the California Computer Crimes Unit attempt to stop a man, and an unknown accomplice, who uses his computer for the ultimate evil: murder. Jeffery Deaver throws out a few curve balls to keep the reader guessing, but avoids the unbelievable twists that seem to be rampant in thrillers. Generally I find that hi-tech fictional works are usual laughable in their portrayal and explanations of the technologies involved. Along this line,I have long felt that Michael Crichton is one of the best authors in researching his topics. I was very pleasantly surprised to find that Mr. Deaver did a great job in his own; all-in-all, his events and explanations were realistic and they reflect his opinion that the reader is not stupid, without going so far as to be a textbook on the subject. It is a very fast moving book, and there are complaints that the characters are not deeply developed. I attribute this to two things. It would take away from the quick pace of the story, and furthermore it is unnecessary. You learn enough about Wyatt and Phate without needless filler. Don't get me wrong, there are a couple of spots where I crinkled my nose in disbelief, but it is a work of fiction and it is a very good one at that.

I thank the author for shining her light, because telling the truth about alcoholism is such a critical factor as we work to loosen its grip.

Having just finished this book, I will say that it is a must read. This is a very disturbing look into Auschwitz and the attrocities that took place, under the direction of Mengele. This account, from a Dr. details that number of people massacred and how they were relieved of their lives. This man, for one reason or another, managed to stay alive and recount the life in Auschwitz as no other could. He is detailed in his memories of the place and gives a clear image for the reader to understand. It is one of those books that you don't often find, in which once you start, you simply cannot put it down. Truly one of the best accounts to date, as it has held up under the years.

Auschwitz was one of the first books to bring the full horror of the Nazi death camps to the American public; this is, as the New York Review of Books said, "the best brief account of the Auschwitz experience available."When the Nazis invaded Hungary in 1944, they sent virtually the entire Jewish population to Auschwitz.
