Introduction to Geography: People, Places, and Environment (5th Edition) Review

I have used this text for approximately a year and found that the students are able to comprehend geography better with a systematic approach than a regional one. One of the things that sold me on this text was the auxillary material, particularly the webpage. The book is very easy to read and has excellent illustrations and photos. Needless to say, I highly recommend this text.

Introduction to Geography: People, Places, and Environment (5th Edition) Overview

In today's world, what happens in places depends more and more on what happens among places. Introduction to Geography: People, Places, and Environment, Fifth Edition demonstrates that fact—and shows that we can understand mapped patterns only if we recognize the movement that creates and continuously rearranges those patterns. The authors discuss what happens in one set of geographic processes and how that process affects others. For example, what happens in economic systems affects environmental conditions; what happens to climate affects political dynamics. This text will introduce you to the major tools, techniques, and methodological approaches of the discipline of geography.

A Love That Multiplies: An Up-Close View of How They Make it Work Review

I'm an adult who is the oldest of five siblings, and I've always wanted to have a family of a similar size. A 5-kid group sounds like a massive family to most everyone that I've met, but for us it's natural. We wouldn't want to have one brother or sister less--every person is unique and wonderful, and our lives are richer for having each other. The Duggars of TLC's show 19 Kids and Counting feel the exact same way about their kids, except that they have four times as many kids as my family! This book covers a lot of their child-rearing principles and spiritual beliefs, as well as the recent challenges in their lives, starting from the time in late 2009 when Michelle went into early labor with their 19th child.
I had never gotten to see the Duggars' TV show, but I was curious about their family and found this book to be the perfect way to learn more. They have been through some major struggles in recent years, but they've always held close to their faith in God's goodness. Early chapters of A Love That Multiplies discuss the medical emergency that arose when Michelle delivered baby Josie three full months before her due date. It was chilling to realize just how close they came to losing Josie, who was just 22 ounces at birth. I had not previously been aware of how hard a "micro-preemie" baby struggles just to survive. In Josie's case, she was having to live through three months of growth that should have happened in the safety of the womb. And yet God provided for their family in times of trouble--a lady they didn't even know offered to let the whole family borrow her house so they could be close to little Josie while she was in such a life-threatening condition.
The Duggar kids may be the focus of the show, but this book makes it clear just how important the parents' attitudes affect the overall family dynamic. By the things Jim Bob and Michelle say about each other, it becomes apparent that they are really in love. It's a big deal that they can express so much admiration for each other in times of stress. Jim Bob sounds like a real problem-solver when he does things like hooking up the generator on the family bus to the house so they could power a washer and dryer during an ice storm that knocked out their power. Michelle seems very savvy, too, with her quiet discipline, creative homeschooling methods, and commitment to meeting her children's emotional needs. I love how conscious Michelle is of how her attitude affects her kids...if you've ever been a child-care provider in any capacity, you know how quickly your own negative behaviors can show up in the kids! But fortunately, the same thing goes for positive traits.
It's also encouraging to see that the Duggar kids are not at all "cloistered" or "sequestered" or any of those other big words for kids who are kept at home and not allowed to see any of the world. These kids have met film crews and magazine representatives and have gone on mission trips to El Salvador. The kids all play music (piano, violin or harp), but they also have their own interests--the older girls like to cook and sew, but the oldest two have also undergone firefighter training work as volunteer firefighters! The oldest two sons own an auto sales lot and a towing business, and are committed to living debt-free. The book mentions a lot of the Duggars' principles for business-running, finance management, and homeschooling, and there's a handy list of resources provided in the back of the book.
It's also important to note that the Duggars aren't forwarding a big political movement--they aren't trying to get everybody in America to have a bunch of offspring; this is just what God has called them to do. It is so touching to see how much they love Jesus Christ and how much they want to meet the needs of others, whether it's baking their TV producer a cake on his birthday, taking cookies to the local fire department, or putting on a concert for residents at a nursing home. I think that supporting the Duggars is not a matter of whether we personally want 19 kids (there are probably not many people who do), or whether we think that most families should be this size (it's probably not practical on a large scale)--it's about whether they seem to be loving and nurturing the kids they have. From all evidence, they're doing just fine. May God bless the Duggars and bless all of our families, whatever their size.

A Love That Multiplies: An Up-Close View of How They Make it Work Overview

In this second book from the Duggars, they focus on the principles that equip them to face life's challenges—drawing from their most recent challenge with the 3-month premature birth of their newest child, Josie. They also share the new challenges their older children are facing as they prepare for adult life. Central to the book is a section on the principles that the Duggars have consistently taught their children. These simply worded principles arebasic to the Duggar family andareshared in a way that other parents can incorporate in their own homes.A special chapter on homeschoolinggives valuable information toparents who are considering this route or are already invested in it. The worldcontinues to beamazed by theirnineteen well-groomed, well-behaved, well-schooled childrenand theirhome life, which focuses on family, financial responsibility, fun—and must importantly, faith. The Duggarsshow how parents can succeed whether they're rearing a single child or several.

Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons Review

I'm so impressed with how this book was put together. The lessons are fool proof for the parent, as they are written with detailed directions. New sounds are gradually worked into previously mastered tasks so that the child is never given more than he/she can handle (this does wonders for my daughter's reading confidence). Before you know it, your child is reading three and four paragraphs, and the process of getting there wasn't painful at all!
One note: I have read other reviews from parents using this book with 3 and 4 year olds. Certainly, if your preschooler shows an interest in reading, this book is an excellent choice. But NOTHING will work unless your child is READY to learn, not even "100 Lessons." Reading readiness happens at different ages (like every other milestone in childhood), and we as parents must respect our children's personal timetables (difficult to do sometimes, I know). Hey, remember when WE were in kindergarten? We spent our days playing, painting, napping (do they even nap anymore these days). Reading came along in first grade, and many of us may not have been ready to learn until then.
That said, buy the book and use it when your particular family is ready ~ ENJOY! :o)

The Story of the World: History for the Classical Child, Volume 2 Audiobook: The Middle Ages: From the Fall of Rome to the Rise of the Renaissance, Revised Edition (9 CDs) Review

Our children (ages 7 & 9) are very much enjoying their study of the Middle Ages using Volume 2 of Susan Wise Bauer's Story of the World: History for the Classical Child.
Because it is written very simply and aimed at children from 1st through 4th grade, I had been supplementing this book with Greenleaf's Guide to Famous Men of the Middle Ages. However, if we study each of the "Famous Men" (which is confined to Europe and surrounding areas) in addition to all the topics in Story of the World, Volume 2 (which includes history from Asia, Africa, the Americas and Australia)-- well, we'd NEVER finish! For that reason, we decided to lay aside the Greenleaf Guides until their middle school years.
Susan Wise Bauer writes in a very engaging manner for young students. She writes as though she were speaking directly to them. My children just love the stories in this book! My son would read it all up in a day or two if I would allow him to.
This is the main book we use as our history spine. We supplement it with many library books that correspond to the chapter of SOTW that we are studying. I would not recommend using this book as your ONLY source of history. It is not intended to be used as such, and it simply cannot meet all your history needs.
To be honest, I am somewhat disappointed in the many spelling errors I have found in this book. Perhaps it was rushed to press because so many homeschoolers were eagerly awaiting the sequel to Volume 1. My son delights in finding the errors, and together we correct them in the text.
All in all, if you are looking for an easy way to introduce world history to your child, I recommend using this book as your entry point. When you reach a chapter that particularly interests your child, find LOTS of library books about that topic.

The Story of the World: History for the Classical Child, Vol. 3: Early Modern Times, 2nd Edition (9 CDs) Review

I purchased this to use along with the Story of the World text and activity book in our homeschool. I thought it would give me a much needed break from reading everything to my non-readers. It is an unabridged reading of the text, although Jim Weiss's reading is too affected and unnatural. Perhaps some people would like this kind of sing-song reading, but it gets irritating after a couple of chapters. My kids often ask me, "Awww, Mom, couldn't *you* just read it?"
The biggest problem with this product is that there is no index for the recording. If you are following along in the book and stop mid-chapter to come back another day, there is NO way to figure out what track to go to on which CD. For instance, Disc one has 10 tracks and is labeled "Introduction-Chapter 5", with no more details.
If you are looking for a book on CD to listen to while you are in the car or doing other things, this may meet your need if you want to hear some general stories from world history. However, if you are looking to use this as a tool to complete the curriculum, it is not very user friendly.

Story of the World, Volume 1: Ancient Times Audiobook CD: From the Earliest Nomads to the Last Roman Emperor, Revised Edition (7 CDs) (v. 1) Review

I bought this book because I had read the reviews here and I needed a history book to add to a homeschooling curriculum. I received it and as I was browsing the pages I focused on the ancient Greece pages, as I am originally from Greece. To my horror, the first inaccuracy was a perpetuated one that Alexander the Great was not greek. I let this slide because I know there has been a huge propaganda about this and the author may have bought on that. Then, I read about the Olympics and how they got their name from mount Olympus. This is again a common misconception, but the Olympics got their name from the ancient city of Olympia and any person who writes a history book should at least know that. Needless to say, we will not be using this book. I want my son to learn about other ancient civilizations but we will do it with a book whose author took actual time to research history.
And I wholeheartedly agree with the people who complained of the sloppy and simplistic feeling of the book. My son is in 2nd grade and I can see how he would be bored with the texts in this book. They are not cohesive and things are mentioned in a haphazard way, definitely not a book I would recommend for homeschooling.

Basher Astronomy: Out of this World Review

My son LOVES these books. The 8x8 size is also inviting. Cute characters introduce difficult ideas. My son wants the whole series. I have to admit the layout makes me curious, to see who is included in what. And it explains those new planets, and the sad demotion of our dear Pluto, and the various things that we didn't know about (kupiter belt, anyone?)

This is a nice companion to any series, and it's also a quick reference. One of those "coffee table books" for kids, that they only pick up because of the nifty cover, but then spend more time in it because it's got some humor and interesting facts. One of those good examples of science well presented doesn't need a lot of whistles and bells, it's just cool in and of itself.

Basher: Chemistry: Getting a Big Reaction Review

I really love the Basher science books. The drawings are great and memorable, and help the concepts really stick with you. They have been indispensable in my learning things for class and studying for tests, and CHEMISTRY is no exception. Even though it's not my favorite scientific field, I have learned a lot from this book and all the others, and I just have one thing to say to Basher and Green: keep it coming! I would recommend this book to anyone interested in brushing up on some old science terms, or who needs a little extra memorization help while studying (And the poster in the back is great too!). I recommend buying not only this book but whichever of the other Basher books that interest you. It is an essential addition to any science collection, by far.

The Annotated Mona Lisa: A Crash Course in Art History from Prehistoric to Post-Modern Review

"The Annotated Mona Lisa: A Crash Course in Art History from Prehistoric to Post-Modern" is more than a crash course, a term used for its catchiness. Actually, the book is a synopsis of art history and provides the lay person concise and brief explanations of history, movements, schools, and individual artists and artwork.
I taught art history for several years at the high school level and relied on Janson's History of Art 7th Ed. and Wood's Art of the Western World: From Ancient Greece to Post-Modernism as my personal instructors. Every night I had to slog through pages of information when all I wanted was something concise and to the point. "The Annotated Mona Lisa" would have served me well.
I found this the other day and popped my forehead (as in V-8 commercials) and asked aloud: Why didn't I use this book for my background? Apparently, I bought it then promptly forgot/misplaced/had little time to use it.
Here's why this book will be a companion for anyone interested in teaching him/herself about art history:
1. Five time categories (ex. Prehistoric through Medieval) with very clear subtitles (ex. Mesopotamia: the Architects)
2. Short explanations per topic. For example, two pages are devoted to "Prehistoric Art: The Beginning," with these sub-categories: Sculpture, Cave Painting, First Architecture, Stonehenge: England's first rock group, accompanied by blocked paragraphs about Horse (cave painting), Prehistoric Treasure Trove (Lascaux cave finding), Easter island Monoliths, and photographs of the Venus of Willendorf, Stonehenge, and a horse from the caves.
3. More detail is provided as art progresses. For example, the unit on the Baroque is subdivided into Italian Baroque (3 pages), Flemish (2 pages), Dutch (5 pages), English (3), Spanish Baroque (2), and French (2).
4. To keep the reader grounded, a time line cross-sectioning world events and art history is placed at the beginning of each of the five time categories.
This is one of those must-have books for its brevity and utility. Whether you are learning from the very beginning or need a refresher course, "The Annotated Mona Lisa" will serve you well.
