Good to Great CD: Why Some Companies Make the Leap...And Others Don't Review

This book by Jim Collins is one of the most successful books to be found in the "Business" section of your local megabookstore, and given how it purports to tell you how to take a merely good company and make it great, it's not difficult to see why that might be so. Collins and his crack team of researchers say they swam through stacks of business literature in search of info on how to pull this feat off, and came up with a list of great companies that illustrate some concepts central to the puzzle. They also present for each great company what they call a "comparison company," which is kind of that company with a goatee and a much less impressive earnings record. The balance of the book is spent expanding on pithy catch phrases that describe the great companies, like "First Who, Then What" or "Be a Hedgehog" or "Grasp the Flywheel, not the Doom Loop." No, no, I'm totally serious.
I've got several problems with this book, the biggest of which stem from fundamentally viewpoints on how to do research. Collin's brand of research is not my kind. It's not systematic, it's not replicable, it's not generalizable, it's not systematic, it's not free of bias, it's not model driven, and it's not collaborative. It's not, in short, scientific in any way. That's not to say that other methods of inquiry are without merit --the Harvard Business Review makes pretty darn good use of case studies, for example-- but way too often Collins's great truths seemed like square pegs crammed into round holes, because a round hole is what he wants. For example, there's no reported search for information that disconfirms his hypotheses. Are there other companies that don't make use of a Culture of Discipline (Chapter 6, natch) but yet are still great according to Collins's definition? Are there great companies that fail to do some of the things he says should make them great? The way that the book focuses strictly on pairs of great/comparison companies smacks of confirmatory information bias, which is a kink in the human mind that drives us to seek out and pay attention to information that confirms our pre-existing suppositions and ignore information that fails to support them.
Relatedly, a lot of the book's themes and platitudes strike me as owing their popularity to the same factors that make the horoscope or certain personality tests like the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator so popular: they're so general and loosely defined that almost anyone can look at that and not only say that wow, that make sense, and I've always felt the same way! This guy and me? We're geniuses! The chapter about "getting the right people on the bus" that extols the virtue of hiring really super people is perhaps the most obvious example. Really, did anyone read this part and think "Oh, man. I've been hiring half retarded chimps. THAT'S my problem! I should hire GOOD people!" Probably not, and given that Collins doesn't go into any detail about HOW to do this or any of his other good to great pro tips, I'm not really sure where the value is supposed to be.
It also irked me that Good to Great seems to try and exist in a vacuum, failing to relate its findings to any other body of research except Collins's other book, Built to Last. The most egregious example of this is early on in Chapter 2 where Collins talks about his concept of "Level 5 Leadership," which characterizes those very special folks who perch atop a supposed leadership hierarchy. The author actually goes into some detail describing Level 5 leaders, but toward the end of the chapter he just shrugs his figurative shoulders and says "But we don't know how people get to be better leaders. Some people just are." Wait, what? People in fields like Industrial-Organizational Psychology and Organizational Development have been studying, scientifically, what great leaders do and how to do it for decades. We know TONS about how to become a better leader. There are entire industries built around it. You would think that somebody on the Good to Great research team may have done a cursory Google search on this.
So while Good to Great does have some interesting thoughts and a handful of amusing or even fascinating stories to tell about the companies it profiles (I liked, for example, learning about why Walgreens opens so many shops in the same area, even to the point of having stores across the street from each other in some cities), ultimately it strikes me as vague generalities and little to no practical information about how to actually DO anything to make your company great.

Sherlock Holmes: A Baker Street Dozen Review

An audio book simply doesn't get any better than this. A dream cast brings to life the Sherlock Holmes adventure A Baker Street Dozen.Any one of these stars would be reason enough to stand in line for this audio book, but hearing all three in a full dramatization is absolutely amazing.
The superb John Gielgud stars as the master sleuth himself, Ralph Richardson is impeccable as his erstwhile companion, Dr. Watson. Now, who would be perfect as the evil Professor Moriarty? Orson Welles, of course.
Singling out one of these narrators would be an impossibility, but who has the better part? For this listener it is Orson Welles who imbues his character with so much stealth and evil that we can see the no-good at work.
Some would claim that Moriarty was the first arch villain, the man Holmes described as the "Napoleon of Crime." He did merit that description, and was certainly the Baker Street detective's arch enemy. Also described by Holmes as follows:
"He is a man of good birth and excellent education, endowed by nature with a phenomenal mathematical faculty. At the age of twenty-one he wrote A Treatise on the Binomial Theorem, which has had a European vogue. On the strength of it he won the mathematical chair at one of our smaller universities, and had, to all appearances, a most brilliant career before him. "
It's interesting to note how Moriarty has survived the years even to an appearance on Star Trek.
The iconic Sherlock Holmes has also lasted through the decades and lives again in this remarkable audio version of A Baker Street Dozen.
Listen, you will surely enjoy.
- Gail Cooke

Story of the World, Volume 1: Ancient Times Audiobook CD: From the Earliest Nomads to the Last Roman Emperor, Revised Edition (7 CDs) (v. 1) Review

I bought this book because I had read the reviews here and I needed a history book to add to a homeschooling curriculum. I received it and as I was browsing the pages I focused on the ancient Greece pages, as I am originally from Greece. To my horror, the first inaccuracy was a perpetuated one that Alexander the Great was not greek. I let this slide because I know there has been a huge propaganda about this and the author may have bought on that. Then, I read about the Olympics and how they got their name from mount Olympus. This is again a common misconception, but the Olympics got their name from the ancient city of Olympia and any person who writes a history book should at least know that. Needless to say, we will not be using this book. I want my son to learn about other ancient civilizations but we will do it with a book whose author took actual time to research history.
And I wholeheartedly agree with the people who complained of the sloppy and simplistic feeling of the book. My son is in 2nd grade and I can see how he would be bored with the texts in this book. They are not cohesive and things are mentioned in a haphazard way, definitely not a book I would recommend for homeschooling.

Self-Hypnosis Review

Unless you're the type of person who needs to hear "you're a winner!!" in a self-induced hypnotic state, this CD isn't for you. While the lead-in to the self-hypnosis was reasonably good, the practice itsef was contrived and not useful. I bought two copies, thinking this sounded like a great CD (given the fact Edgar Cayce is seemingly associated with it). I intended to give the other copy as a gift, but once I listended to my copy, I was not going to impose this worthless exercise on my sister! Keep looking for a better self-hypnosis experience - this one isn't it.

The Mouse Tales CD Audio Collection Review

I purchased this set for my grand daughter (3 1/2 yrs old)as she loves to listen to books on tape etc. However, do not make the mistake that I did -- this is a CD only so you need to purchase the books separately. She loves the tales and follows along in the book - the author is the narrator and has a wonderfully expressive voice.

The Mouse Tales CD Audio Collection Overview

Two classic stories by Arnold Lobel!

Mouse Tales: "Papa, please tell us a tale."

Mouse Soup: Mouse is in a jam—soon he'll be weasel soup!

Weasel is ready for his dinner. And poor mouse is it. Just in time, he thinks up a clever and entertaining way to distract weasel from serving up mouse soup for supper.

Magic Tree House CD Collection Books 9-16 Review

Wow. My wife and I were going on a long car trip with a 5, 3 and 1 year old, and wanted an alternative to the DVD player and Disney movies. What a find!!! Our 5 and 3 year old were silent and tranfixed on these stories for over 4 hours. that was 3 months ago. Now, our five year old spends her "quiet time" in her room, coloring and listening to these great stories. They are not silly or sassy (like some others), they are educational, smart and riveting tales featuring strong and confident children. For our girls, it is especially gratifying to have them listen to stories featuring a girl (Annie) who doesn't talk endlessly of princesses and dresses. A huge bonus is we actually like listening to them also!!!! These books on CD are simply amazing. On Saturday mornings, our girls get up and listen to the stories in their rooms, while playing quietly!!!! We have found the holy grail of parenting, and it was hidden in a Magic Treehouse!

The Cat in the Hat and Other Dr. Seuss Favorites Review

As a homeschooling Mom of 2 small girls, we do A LOT of reading together. What a treat to have someone else do the reading for me every once in a while! Kelsey Grammer, John Lithgow, Walter Matthau, Ted Danson, Billy Crystal and other famous voices certainly do an OUTSTANDING job! The stories are unabridged, which makes it easy to follow along with your own Dr Seuss library. Between the talented author and the unquestionably talented actors, you just can't go wrong...what a great gift to any child or Dr. Seuss fan of any age! My daughters love this CD, and are always asking for one more story or the other disc. SO...we purchased the Green Eggs and Ham CD set today, and are very eager to see how it compares to this fun compilation!

The Wayne Dyer CD Collection Review

This CD set is a compilation of the series of televised specials that have been shown on Public Television during pledge breaks. They are essentially the audio portions of his video program.
I own a number of Wayne Dyer tape sets and this CD compilation is a bargain. It contains his best material at about 90% off what you could pay to purchase his larger tape sets.
One of the attractions of Wayne Dyer to me is not his advice - which borrows heavily from other self-help gurus - but his delivery combined with his own personal stories. He relies heavily on discussion of his personal background from being in an orphanage to being divorced and dealing with the absence of his father since birth.
Wayne Dyers books have weathered the passing of time. His popularity may have been greatest in the late 70's - however his message is still crystal clear for anyone who wishes to listen and learn.

The Wayne Dyer CD Collection Overview

This four-CD collection is filled with Dr. Wayne Dyer's incomparable wisdom. It guides us to new levels of self-awareness.

Included in this CD Collection are:

There Is A Spiritual Solution to Every Problem: On this inspirational and highly informative CD program, Dr. Wayne W. Dyer offers his wit and wisdom, taking you on a sacred journey where the spirit triumphs, teaching you that there is a spiritual solution to every problem.

Dr. Wayne Dye's 10 Secrets to Success and Inner Peace: The ten secrets for success and inner peace presented here apply whether you're just embarking on your path, are nearing the end of it, or are on the path in any way. Dr. Dyer urges you to read these ten secrets with an open heart. By doing so, you'll learn to feel the peace of God that truly defines success.

Improve Your Life Using the Wisdom of the Ages: On this stirring CD, you will learn from Dr. Dyer how to use and apply ancient wisdom from over 60 of the greatest thinkers and spiritual masters that our world has known, including Jesus, Michelangelo, Mother Teresa, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Thoreau, Gibran, Yogananda, and Descartes, to name a few. Don't die with your music still in you, Dr. Dyer urges, if you want to achieve greatness. You are born on Earth to do your own unique life's work.

How to Get What You Really, Really, Really Want: Dr. Dyer teaches you how to start getting your heart's desire by first becoming a self-actualized person; second, being independent of other people's opinions; third, being detached from outcomes; and fourth, being free of any investment to have power or control over other people. Then, you must banish all doubt from your mind, and know that you can attract what you want into your life.

I purchased this for our 5 year old son. He has truly enjoyed listening to the sweet stories of friendship. While we have the books, I agree with the other reviewer, you really do not have to read along to be entertained. We put the tape in our son's player and he listens while drifting off to sleep. Unlike some children's books on tape, this is done so well - the timing, clarity and voices keep your interest. This is a winner!!

Magic Tree House Collection: Books 1-8 Review

I am the mother of two boys, ages 3 and 5, I started to purchase audio cassettes to keep the boys quiet--for a least a few minutes -- on long car trips to grandmas house...over 2 hours away. The Magic Tree House Series has worked so well that the boys love to listen to them, over and over and over... even on short errands. The problem now, is, how do I get them out of the car?? The stories are delightful and have some historical/educational value, the vocabulary is not dummed down either. I find both boys discussing the "JAck and Annie" stories and role playing their favorite "scenes".
