To the user whose StreetWise map didn't show the Chrysler Building: You'll be pleased to know that the Chrysler has been added to the latest addition!
I've been using this map since it first came out, and have given away more copies than I can count. I keep a map in each of two briefcases and one in my backpack. I use it several times a month to plot subway routes or to get my bearings in an unfamiliar neighborhood.
I've lived in NYC for thirty-six years, and this is the map I couldn't do without. Great product.

La Seduction: How the French Play the Game of Life Review

They say it's difficult to see the warts and wrinkles of your own culture until you travel, exposure to other cultures being an eye-opening experience. Since I can't travel as much as I like, I enjoy reading books by those living abroad. In this book Elaine Sciolino attempts to explain virtually everything we see as different about French life and culture thru the lens of "seduction". While there are some rewarding parts to this book I came away with the sense the book illustrates the maxim "to a man with a hammer, everything looks like a nail". If you water a term down enough it can encompass almost everything, but I didn't come away from reading this thinking that I'd learned what makes French culture distinctive nor would I ever quote the idea to friends in conversation the way one might mention the thesis after reading "Blink" or "Checklist Manifesto".
Furthermore Sciolino is not just any American living abroad, but someone who was a prominent journalist. The last third of the book capitalizes on this past to get interviews with current and former heads of the French government. Sciolino weaves the book theme of seduction into this portion as well but it seemed a bit disjoint from the rest of the story. While books by Americans living for an extended time in France by Polly Platt or Adam Gopnik, for example, describe life as seen from a vantage that many people could envision as at least plausible for themselves too, sitting down with heads of the French government is not an experience many of us see in our future. For my money, I thought I got more out of the books by Gopnik and Platt than I did from this book.

The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid: A Memoir Review

Seriously. I was up past bedtime, and I was reading Bryson's description of lame 1950's toys. I won't give it away, but imagine what he can do with the topic of "electric football". After a particularly vigorous episode of chortling, my wife trudged out of bed to decree that, if I insisted on continuing to read, I'd have to take it downstairs.
And that's what this book is, a laugh-out-loud remembrance of a simpler, sillier time. Bryson's travelogues are what made him famous, and he never would have made it without a fantastic memory for detail and an ability to convey a vivid mental picture of the topics he chooses. His descriptions of 1950's Des Moines are consistently evocative. It's like a travelogue unearthed from a 50 year old time capsule. I feel like I have visited there.
Still, readers of Bryson known that what truly sets him apart is his uncanny ability to attract and describe morons, as well as all manner of idiotic situations (generally self-inflicted). For a man who can do this on, say, a simple trip to Australia, imagine how much comedy gold can be mined from a childhood in the Midwest of the 50's. It is, as they say, a target-rich environment. His remembrances include family, friends, school, Des Moines, lame childhood toys, nuclear bombs, and more. Even things like TV dinners, which we have all heard mocked before, are skewered in new and amusing ways.
For all of that, though, the memoir is not mean spirited. I think that the ridicule works so well because it is easy to sense Bryson's real affection for his subjects (well, at least the ones who aren't carbonized by the x-ray vision of the Thunderbolt Kid). He's poking fun, but in a way that family and friends might poke fun at each other over old childhood foibles at a Thanksgiving dinner. It's the humor that you get when your wife knows that you're ridiculous, but loves you just the same. This book belongs with such classic tributes to youth as The Wonder Years, Stand By Me, and A Christmas Story. Buy it, and enjoy it. Just try not to read it next to someone's bedroom.

GPS devices are nice, but combined with "The Next Exit" you can really know what's ahead a few hundred miles.

I was surprized how easy it was to navigate this guide on the Kindle. The first page had a legible map and links to attractions indicated on the map. Each attraction article had a backlink to the map. It was really easy to go back and forth between the map and atractions. The color map looked even better on the iPhone and iPhone navigation was greatly facilitated by those backlinks.

Do not go to Rome without this book! I read this book before going and was able to get an idea of what Rome was about, but when I arrived, this book did not leave my hands! This guide divides Rome into sections. We set out agenda according to sections in the book. The street-by-street map was invaluable and we were never lost. I am the worst with directions, but I knew extactly where I was during each day. With the maps, I navigated instead of my husband! The cut aways and guides to the various museums and attractions were also invaluable. We were able to walk into any attraction and know what the star features were and not have to miss a thing. We did not have to buy the extra tour books in each museum because our Eyewitness Guide gave us all the information we need and then some. Not only was I the navigator, but I was our personal tour guide. With the book, I was able to read out loud to my husband and tell him about everything we saw in Rome. There were many other tourist with the Eyewitnes Guides in their hands and I was pleasantly surprised to see the book in so many different languages. A tourist even came up to me at the Trevi Fountain asking me where I got the book because she saw so many people with it, and she was disappointed when I said I got it in the States because she was ready to pick up a copy immediately.
You can forget the credit cards, but DO NOT LEAVE HOME WITH THIS ONE!

The Penguin State of the World Atlas: Eighth Edition Review

Dan Smith's State of the World Atlas provides visually arresting representations of statistics about the political and social state of the world. You learn about wealth and poverty, civil rights, environmental depredation, birth and death rates, the spread of obesity, smoking, varying degrees of freedom, militarization, and much else. In all cases the information is projected onto the world map. In many cases, the information ingeniously *becomes* the map. But just because everything in this book is centered on maps, it is dismaying that Penguin skimped on production. This book should have been printed as a hardcover with sewn binding so that it can lie open flat, revealing the two-page map spreads in all their glory. As it is, either key sections of the maps are lost in the gutter, or you need to break the glued spine, which, I suspect, will lead the book to fall apart fairly quickly. Too bad.
