The Inquisition of Climate Science Review

This is an excellent book on the politics of climate change denial. It is now settled beyond doubt that the world is warming and that human release of carbons has a lot to do with it. (As an anthropologist working with climate change data for a lifetime, I am quite capable of evaluating the evidence on all sides, and have followed it for decades; I have no political axe to grind and was in fact a skeptic until the evidence was overwhelming.) There are now very few scientifically competent deniers except people funded by energy companies and a few long-retired, long-out-of-touch scientists.
Powell does a wonderful job with the person politics, but a few points need to be amplified. First, he mentions, but rather downplays, the fact that big oil--specifically, ExxonMobil, the Koch brothers, and a couple of smaller firms--are running the show. They provide essentially all the money and most of the verbiage. Worldwide, just to show that it isn't "capitalism" or "the right wing" here, the Chinese government and their huge energy-extracting, energy-wasting economic machine is the other big source of denial and political opposition to change. Second, a very scary phenomenon is the way that political extremists (and NOT so much the big oil companies in this case) have linked climate change denial with the longer-standing anti-science agendas in the United States: anti-evolution and racism. This is creating a witch's-brew environment in which people can seriously talk about shutting down the National Science Foundation, the US Dept of Education, and even public education in general. At least the Chinese are smarter than that; they know that the competition for global power in the 21st century will be won by the best educated, not the most gullible.
This said, the oil companies get a bum rap in one important way, unfortunately not discussed in this book. Deforestation is the source of at least 20% of human-liberated carbon. I would personally bet it's over 20%. This suggests that the easiest and quickest way to help the world's climate is to plant trees. There are some problems with this, but it's better than the alternative solutions. It is more immediately workable, cheaper to implement, great for poorer countries, valuable in itself, and valuable for lots of reasons outside of climate change.
This by the board--Powell's book is excellent and everyone should read it.

The Inquisition of Climate Science Overview

Modern science is under the greatest and most successful attack in recent history. An industry of denial, abetted by news media and "info-tainment" broadcasters more interested in selling controversy than presenting facts, has duped half the American public into rejecting the facts of climate science -- an overwhelming body of rigorously vetted scientific evidence showing that human-caused, carbon-based emissions are linked to warming the Earth. The industry of climate science denial is succeeding: public acceptance has declined even as the scientific evidence for global warming has increased. It is vital that the public understand how anti-science ideologues, pseudo-scientists, and non-scientists have bamboozled them. We cannot afford to get global warming wrong -- yet we are, thanks to deniers and their methods. The Inquisition of Climate Science is the first book to comprehensively take on the climate science denial movement and the deniers themselves, exposing their lack of credentials, their extensive industry funding, and their failure to provide any alternative theory to explain the observed evidence of warming. In this book, readers meet the most prominent deniers while dissecting their credentials, arguments, and lack of objectivity. James Lawrence Powell shows that the deniers use a wide variety of deceptive rhetorical techniques, many stretching back to ancient Greece. Carefully researched, fully referenced, and compellingly written, his book clearly reveals that the evidence of global warming is real and that an industry of denial has deceived the American public, putting them and their grandchildren at risk.
