Modern Recording Techniques, Seventh Edition Review

Pros:
Not sure how much the 7th edition differs from previous editions, but I feel this book is a solid reference for beginner/intermediate recording. It touches on every part of the recording process and has a lot of broad info (though some parts are way more useful than others).
There are some useful bits throughout the book that helped me get more mileage from my recording space and processes. The sections about setting up monitors in a room (with example pics), approaches to absorbing/diffusing sound and standing waves, and the general tips on working with computer-based DAW's were great. There is also plenty of useful info on sitting instruments in a mix based on frequency, panning, and reverberation.
Cons:
More than $40 is too much for a recording reference book that is not even hardcover.
The scope is so large that it does not dive too deep into any one facet of recording. To the author's credit he encourages you to use the web for more in-depth material (but I wanted that material in a book).
The book is verbose. All the practical and useful tips are buried between pages, and there is no decent summary of the really important items at the start or end of each chapter, which is frustrating for note-takers. Blue text is used to highlight special ideas or points on each page, but it is abused so much that the emphasis fails. 35% of the words could have been cut from the book while still retaining the same ideas and principles.
A more concise version of the most important recording principles can be found in McLan's 1997 "Using Your Portable Studio" which is old, but presents the same amount of timeless practical recording knowledge in far fewer pages.
Other thoughts:
Would have gotten 4-5 stars if it was more condensed, and spent more pages on real-world recording scenarios and applications (like specific trade-secrets from big-name engineers, or case studies would have been great additions).
I have been looking for a book containing real-world step-by-step recording practices and processes written like a recipe book, but I have discovered that such a narrow approach is better suited to a website. So, for more advanced and specific how-to's on techniques in mastering, mixing, midi sequencing, and the like, take the author's advice and search the web.

Apple Pro Training Series: Final Cut Pro 7 Review

I am already reasonably experienced with video editing in Sony Vegas. When I started using FCP7 I found accomplishing simple tasks was leaving me scratching my head. I decided to order this book from amazon to see if I could get some traction with this new suite of programs.
The book is well organized and does a good job teaching a workflow without just telling you to click one thing and another and then admire the outcome. The book begins with laying out a rough cut and refining it in the following chapters through various editing techniques all the way to project delivery. It maintains interest by changing the project media at the right time. It also does a good job of demonstrating multiple ways to accomplish the same result and giving examples of why one method might be more useful in certain situations. I found the illustrations to be very accurate and helpful.
The 4 video projects on the DVD are great to work with. There are 3 documentaries (Seaworld, music and nature) and one TV series (Leverage). The quality of the media is beautiful but not so perfect that it doesn't take a little bit of effort get results. This is one of the most effective parts of the exercises. It's clear when you preview the project that it needs improvement but it's the editing that makes the result satisfying not the fact that most anything shot on a Red One can look great.
I followed every chapter and performed all the exercises closely even when I already understood the concept being demonstrated. The chapters give a time estimate on how long they should take and personally it took me almost twice as long as the estimate in most cases. I think if I already new the software the estimates would be more accurate. By the end of the book I was coming closer the the stated times but it still took longer.
I thought the workflow and methodology of the book were so well organized that I have started applying the editing strategies into Vegas and learning parts of that program I never really used previously. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn editing on Final Cut Pro.

KINDLE FREE FOR ALL: How to Get Millions of Free Kindle Books and Other Free Content With or Without an Amazon Kindle (NEW and UP-TO-DATE: MAY 2011 - For ... Latest Generation Kindles and Kindle Apps) Review

I wasn't expecting much for the price, but I've got to say that I really didn't get my money's worth.
Like many Kindle owners, I kept seeing this title pop-up everywhere. My initial reaction was that it was a scam - some guy trying to con as many people into buying a cheap book as possible (hey, if 10,000 people buy a book for a few bucks, it all adds up, right?).
Turns out there's actually quite a bit of content here. I didn't find it particularly useful, but there are lots of words - don't worry that you're only going to get a two-pager with a few web links. That's not the case.
After reading through this, though, I was left with a few thoughts I hope my fellow Kindle readers will appreciate:
1) It's not a scam, but let's be clear that advertising for the author's website/blog, "Kindle Nation" is probably a big reason this book exists. I can understand pitching it a bit up-front (nothing wrong with a bit of self-promotion), but there's an entire chapter in the middle of the book entitled, "How to Contact Kindle Nation"...
2) It's the Kindle-owner feel-good book of the year! Way too much of this "book" focuses on telling you how great your Kindle is. I agree, of course. The Kindle is awesome, but most Kindle owners should know this without having to read a book about it. :) It's kind of like buying a new TV, and then going out to buy a book about how great your new TV is...Oh, and this new edition talks about getting this free content WITHOUT NEEDING A KINDLE!!! If you pay any attention to the Amazon website, you'll already know that there are Kindle apps for all kinds of devices... No need to buy a book to tell you that.
3) I didn't actually learn anything. The vast majority of information in this book is available on Amazon's Kindle website or in the Kindle manual for free - and it doesn't even provide full end-to-end, step-by-step instructions for most things...you'll still need the manual. The few truly 'new' topics (e.g. Calibre) are pretty easy to find by Googling "Kindle".
4) Not well-written. I'm not an author (and anyone reading my review will probably agree), but the author is just so damn verbose it's not funny. And it's not like the extras words make the steps you need to go through to get the free content easier to understand (that's what bullets are for - and there aren't a lot of those in this book). This is written in a style that makes you feel you're in a 3-hour, one-sided conversation...
Don't get me wrong - some people may well find it useful to buy this.
If your friends all have iPads and you want some talking points around what's great about your Kindle so you can still show your face at parties - this book is for you.
If you're technologically challenged and need someone to hold your hand through Kindle Basics, don't like reading things 'on the web' and you're finding the manual a bit hard to understand - this book is for you.
If you love Kindle Nation and are looking for ways to subsidize it - this book is for you.
If you enjoyed the rambling prose of this review and didn't feel that I could have got my point across simply by saying, "This book sucked" - this book is for you. :)
I gave it two stars instead of one because it does deliver what it claims to and I didn't find any spelling mistakes.
But seriously folks...like...wow.

The Slight Edge Review

This is truly a book I would recommend to anyone...and the only reason I would ever recommend a book is if it's had significant, real personal impact on my life in practical ways...and this book has done just that. It's caused me to be more consciously aware of the slight edge when making small, seemingly insignificant decisions throughout the day.
Jeff doesn't necessarily offer up a new philosophy or idea in this book. But he uncovers the simple, eternal truths about success and failure, and he calls it the "slight edge": simplified disciplines (good or bad) compounded over time. This principle, which is true to everyone, everywhere, can be recognized and applied to EVERY area of life.
He explains how our society has been inundated with what he calls the "breakthrough mentality": how we expect success and completion to come easily and quickly. He breaks down the slight edge and how it affects your financial prosperity, health, relationships, etc. This book really causes you to look at your life, where you're at, how you got there, and the choices you can make daily to get to where you want to go.
I have read the book, I have listened to the audiobook. I will continue to refer back to it's principles.
Bottom Line: It's easy reading, it's practical, it's useful. Not only would I recommend this to everyone (which I RARELY ever do for a book), but if I was in charge of things, I would make this a required text in high schools.
