The Unearthing (The Omniverse) Review

As an author who is never quite satisfied with his own work, I am hard on authors of all shapes, genders, ages and shoe sizes. Call me a skeptic. I am particularly hard on sci-fi writers. So I figured I'd read this longish book and find plenty of things to get my kicks out of carping about. Not so. Tightly written, characters well drawn and well written, sharp dialogue, just enough background info to feel you know "where they're coming from," and a simple but highly imaginative plot lay the foundation to a well written book. The writer has a wonderfully eclectic feel for a variety of fields, including science, technology, psychology, social science, the military, political intrigue, and religion, and actually, a very good handle on some probing and troubling issues in contemporary theology.
If I have any complaints there are only two and they are really personal preference issues more than anything else. I am not fond of what I think are gratuitous details in sex scenes and scenes of violence. I am against neither sex nor violence in books, but when the "gory details" add little or nothing to the arc of the story I find them jolting and distracting. Secondly, I do think that a slightly better job of editing could have been done, particularly the repetitious bringing of the reader up to date on where we are in the story at the beginning of many of the chapters. Either we are interested enough in the book to remember what we have just read, or we are picking it up to read a chapter every month or two. If the former we need no precis every chapter and if the latter, we ought to go back and re-read the book from the beginning anyway. But that is niggling finickiness on my part.
Read this book. It is well written, and raises some serious issues that few sci-fi books even consider. Well done. Author, take a bow! Meanwhile, I am off to read the sequel.
