Pocket Medicine: The Massachusetts General Hospital Handbook of Internal Medicine (Pocket Notebook Series) Review

Pocket Medicine is an outstanding quick reference, covering an astonishing amount of information in a small notebook.
During spare moments, I can review the well-designed chapters. When I need a reference, the facts are laid out in a clear and logical format, and referenced to journals and studies where appropriate.
A more complete index is the one thing I would add to this book, but that's a small quibble. It's easy enough to add notations to the back of the book, or add a few extra pages (the binder takes standard six-ring refills, such as FiloFax Personal pages).
My pockets are lighter since I found Pocket Medicine.

Rapid Interpretation of EKG's, Sixth Edition Review

This is a wonderful book for nursing or medical students, or anyone who needs to learn EKGs/ECGs. I'm a physician and read EKGs every day and I've never seen another text that was able to teach me the necessary concepts so painlessly. Yes, it *IS* written as if the reader is a third grader and I'm sure that offends some people who have spent their life in school or who want to make people believe that EKG reading is some magical art. Personally I enjoy being taken by the hand and shown everything like it was the first time I'd seen it. I think the teaching method presented here is quit effective for the average Joe or Josephine. Reading EKGs is not magic and this book shows you that anyone *can* really do it. I would strongly encourage anyone who has had trouble grasping the concept of EKGs to pick this book up, and that includes physicians, nurses, students, EMTs, medical technicians, respiratory therapists, heck, ANYONE who wants to learn to read EKGs! I give it my highest recommendation.

Neuroscience: Exploring the Brain Review

Overall this is an excellent text for an undergraduate level course. It is the 3rd book on the subject that I've read and the best of the lot. It is much more conprehensive than the others, but does not get into the details of some graduate level books.
The content deserves a 5 star, but I gave it 4 stars overall because of a couple shortcomings. The graphics don't convey the 3 dimensionality of the anatomy. All of my anatomy texts do a far better job representing internal structures, and this becomes extremely important.
2nd, there are some areas overemphasized, some omissions, and a problem with the order of presentation. The chapter on attention tells me that one of the authors researches in this area. Sorry, it doesn't warrant a chapter. You know you're on the wrong track when you spend an entire page just explaining the minutiae of a single experiment. Second, there was no mention of intelligence. Yes it's a hotbutton issue. No excuse for ignoring it. Finally, issues were raised, such as fear or emotions, that use the same structure. It would be helpful to discuss the anatomy in more detail early on instead of introducing structures piecemeal.
Overall an excellent book.

The Healing of America: A Global Quest for Better, Cheaper, and Fairer Health Care Review

I bought this book after reading Jacob Weisberg's review in Newsweek. It is the best thing on the subject for the following reasons: 1. It is well written even funny in places. 2. It is very informative. 3. It presents comparative data both as to health outcomes and also ways of paying for health care 4. It is non-partisan, even though by the end one wonders why we Americans are paying so much for health outcomes that are actually worse than any comparable country. 5. It is revealing as to the complexity of the US; for example, I didn't know that as many as 80 million Americans are already covered by systems nearly identical to the British or Canadian, i.e. medicaid, medicare, military, veterans and Department of Indian Affairs - who would have thought that? But 45 million others are not covered at all. Everyone else is covered, more or less, by insurance and so are the Germans, French and Japanese etc. But what a difference in the insurance systems! In the other countries you get insurance just like here EXCEPT THAT 1. you cannot be denied 2. you cannot be cancelled 3. everyone is covered and 4. your premiums are regulated by government which of course is what the entire debate is about. Because here the insurance industry is for profit and the premiums reflect that fact, the amazing fact that US health is the USA's largest industry by far, larger that the State of California, four times larger that the military, in fact US health would be the world's 8th largest country. No wonder the debate is so fierce. This excellent books set it all out readably and comprehensively.

The Healing of America: A Global Quest for Better, Cheaper, and Fairer Health Care Overview

Bestselling author T. R. Reid guides a whirlwind tour of successful health care systems worldwide, revealing possible paths toward U.S. reform. In The Healing of America, New York Times bestselling author T. R. Reid shows how all the other industrialized democracies have achieved something the United States can't seem to do: provide health care for everybody at a reasonable cost. In his global quest to find a possible prescription, Reid visits wealthy, free market, industrialized democracies like our own-including France, Germany, Japan, the U.K., and Canada-where he finds inspiration in example. Reid shares evidence from doctors, government officials, health care experts, and patients the world over, finding that foreign health care systems give everybody quality care at an affordable cost. And that dreaded monster "socialized medicine" turns out to be a myth. Many developed countries provide universal coverage with private doctors, private hospitals, and private insurance. In addition to long-established systems, Reid also studies countries that have carried out major health care reform. The first question facing these countries-and the United States, for that matter-is an ethical issue: Is health care a human right? Most countries have already answered with a resolute yes, leaving the United States in the murky moral backwater with nations we typically think of as far less just than our own. The Healing of America lays bare the moral question at the heart of our troubled system, dissecting the misleading rhetoric surrounding the health care debate. Reid sees problems elsewhere, too: He finds poorly paid doctors in Japan, endless lines in Canada, mistreated patients in Britain, spartan facilities in France. Still, all the other rich countries operate at a lower cost, produce better health statistics, and cover everybody. In the end, The Healing of America is a good news book: It finds models around the world that Americans can borrow to guarantee health care for everybody who needs it.

Atlas of Human Anatomy: with Student Consult Access (Netter Basic Science) Review

Honestly, I don't know what I would have done without Netter's. From the time that I bought it, anatomy became a much easier task for me. The reason mostly has to do with the way the figures are drawn. They are so clear (and lifelike) that a lot of times you don't even have to refer to any anatomy text to understand structural relationships. Each figure also usually labels most of the structures that are shown.
I'm not saying that all the figures are excellent. Probably 5-10 % of figures could be improved. But the rest are very good.
I should also say that this book is only an "atlas" and does not have any accompanied text; the index for structures is done in a weird way so usually it's hard to find the structure you're looking for; the book binding is very poor; and the coverage of X-ray, CT, and MRI is poor. There are also some occasional mislabeling errors.
But overall, it is the best anatomy atlas that I have seen, and because of Netter's work, I gave it 4 stars. However, considering all aspects of the book, I'll give it the following rating:
Accuracy: 4/5
Anatomical Details: 5/5
Artistry: 5/5
Book Binding: 2/5
Clarity: 5/5
Color Schemes: 5/5
Coverage of Imaging: 2/5
Index Quality: 3/5
Proportionality of Parts: 5/5
Realism: 4/5
Sizes of Figures: 5/5
Text: N/A
3-Dimensionality: 5/5
Overall Score for Netter's work: 4.5/5
Other Aspects of the book: 2/5
Netter's Atlas of Human Anatomy is already a classic and will remain so for a long time to come.

The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down Review

I was one of the physicians involved in the care of Lia Lee. I'm referred to in the book as the physician that first diagnosed Lia's spells as seizures. Neil Ernst and Peggy Philp, the principal pediatricians in the book, were and are good friends of mine.Having experienced Lia Lee's saga personally, and then having read the book, I can only refer to Anne Fadiman's talent as astounding. Anne walks an incredibly fine, and very well documented, line as she describes what happens when American medical technology meets up with a deep and ancient Eastern culture. My team (Western medicine) failed Lia. Never have I felt so fairly treated in defeat, and never have I felt so much respect for an author's skillful distillation of a tragically murky confrontation of cultures.
ADDENDUM (8/8/09) I wrote the above review almost a decade ago. The experiences that I had during the events described in this book have continued to guide the way that I practice medicine. The Spirit Catches You has become a true classic in the medical and anthropological fields, being read in college, medical school, and nursing classes throughout the United States every year. This speaks to the enduring quality of the work that Anne Fadiman did in a book that remains unique in the skill with which it was written. The story it contains remains fresh and astoundingly relevant to the practice of medicine in particular, and cross-cultural relationships in general.
