Hatha Yoga Illustrated Review

I have been practicing yoga for several years now and have read tons of books on the subject. This is an excellent book on the basics. It covers 70 poses not including variations. Countrary to my assumptions, not all of the posture's described are 'beginner's poses', there are a few more difficult poses that are common to certain schools of yoga. The descriptions on how to do the poses are pratical - not so much detail that you're doing a 100 point check list. Simplier modifications are often given, useful if one is not as flexible or strong as required to do the final form (or injured, or tired, etc.). One addition I greatly appreciate is that counterposes are given for each posture, this gives a beginner some idea of what to do next. In fact, for each pose, the following details are listed: counterpose, drishti (what you should look at), physical benefits, mental benefits, and countraindications (injuries or health problems that may prevent you from practicing a posture or require a simpler variation).
The routines in the back of the book are short, but extremely helpful for how to build a routine. There are routines for a gentle practice, flexibility, some examples of vinyasa segments, and both sun and moon salutations.
I really am enjoying this book.

Strength Training Anatomy-3rd Edition Review

With over 450,000 copies sold, this book is arguably the best book of its kind. What's it useful for? Mainly to help the reader (from the weekend athlete to the athletic trainer to the professional bodybuilder) figure out what exercises work what muscles.
It's neatly divided up into sections (arms, shoulders, chest, back, etc.), so all you really have to do is flip to one of these sections and it will have detailed pictures of various exercises and exactly which muscles are involved.
A great reference to keep have around, I give it five stars easy. Readers who lift weights regularly might also be interested Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff to avoid shoulder problems a lot of lifters eventually get.

Anatomy Flashcards Review

I'm working on prerequisites to get into an RN program and before taking the required A&P courses I decided to take an intro level human biology that covers both A&P, just not quite as deeply. I've purchased 5 sets of flashcards and this is the set that best correlates with the information as delivered by my instructor. If it helps - we're using "Essentials of Human Anatomy & Physiology (9th edition)" by Elaine N Marieb. I have been buddying up with classmates to drill one another using these cards. These cards are conveniently (and nicely) organized by organ systems. They are not hole-punched so cannot readily be put on a ring, but that doesn't detract from these cards. They are on decent weight cardstock. Don't be fooled into thinking they lack comprehensive information due to the set being done on 310 cards. They are densely packed, but not overly so. The information is presented clearly with very detailed colored images. I like these best of the sets I've sampled - these are actually being used!

Netter's Anatomy Flash Cards: with Online Student Consult Access (Netter Basic Science) Review

I purchased both sets of Netter's flash cards. The musculoskeletal flash cards were better for muscles & bones, and the Anatomy flash cards worked well for other structures. However, these were only for the structures that were listed on the cards. I made many alterations to the cards to compensate for the lack of identified structures. That being said, my previous method of making flash cards was to use Mental Case on the Mac. I prefer to use Mental Case, but creating the images with numbered structures was too time consuming. Using the flash cards saved time in creating flash cards for the structures covered in gross anatomy even considering the alterations needed.
Out of the box, these flash cards would be better suited for undergraduate level of study.

I needed this book for my class this Fall but since it's a new edition, it's sooooo expensive!!! I figured since this looseleaf binder version was coming directly from Amazon, I should be ok and if not I would have no trouble returning it. I'm so glad I took the chance and bought this. This is the same exact book as the hardcover version...even with the glossy pages...except that it has been 3 hole punched and has a soft cover! This is great! Fit's perfectly into a nice 3 ring binder and it even comes with the mini atlas like the hardcover version!

Human Anatomy & Physiology, 8th Edition Review

I used the previous (7th) edition and got an "A" in my online Anatomy and Physiology class. From what I could tell, there was no difference between the cheaper 7th edition and the ridiculously priced 8th edition except for the picture on the cover!
I gave the book three stars because it was unclear and lacked details in so many areas that it left me confused. I had to clarify a lot of issues by looking them up online.
I resold my book after I was finished with it for the same amount of money I paid for it so all it cost me was the initial shipping fee.
FYI - I quit buying books at my campus bookstore after the first semester and have saved over $1000.00 so far, just by buying used, previous editions.
The latest ploy these unscrupulous bookstores use is to package up a bunch of useless items with the necessary textbook and sell the "bundle" at an outrageous price. It is criminal.
I always ask the instructors before hand what other materials are required and if I can use the previous edition. 99 percent of the time they tell me the ONLY thing I need is the textbook and the previous edition is OK. Occasionally a professor will insist on the current edition and I still save a ton of money buying it used on Amazon.com. When I am finished, I re-sell them and usually get all my money back!
We need to get the word out about the college bookstore textbook scams! It is an OUTRAGE!

After looking at a number of textbooks for a course in English phonetics, I decided to use Fundamentals of Phonetics by Larry Small. The book almost teaches itself. There are hundreds of short exercises that students can use on their own. The answer key at the back of the book covers a vast majority of the learning tools. My task as a teacher is greatly simplified.
The examples and diagrams are clear. I also like the enclosed CD with sample utterances. I would have preferred that the audio tapes mentioned in the text be included on the CD, rather than as a separate purchase.

Everyone Poops (My Body Science Series) Review

A hilarious book showing many kinds of animals, their poop, and describing where and how they poop (e.g. while walking). Also reviewed are the ways a baby poops in a diaper, small child in a potty, and older children and adults on a toilet. Hysterical graphics such as rear view of child sitting on toilet with the poop in midair, which we see between the gap in his buttock cheeks. Other scenes demonstrate how the toilet is flushed and the poop is washed down the pipes.
Illustrations are cartoon like. This was originally published in Japan and therefore the human characters are all Asian. How lucky for us English-speaking parents to have this translated version!
The goal of this book is to review with the child the progression of moving from diapers to toilets. It is a funny way to talk about poop with the child. Every child who has seen our book laughs out loud. Many adults who have seen our book think it is so funny. The exception is my husband who thinks this is just gross. If you need to interject some humor in the toilet learning process, read this to your child!
Update December 2008: I'm surprised that I had said my husband thought the book was gross. He went on to like it, laugh at it, and to really like the book. By the time we were reading the book to our second child, my husband loved the book. We now buy this book for gifts for toddlers who are approaching the toilet training time.
Also Note: Toilet training is not always easy. No picture book can train your child to use the toilet! But a book can be a gateway for discussion between parent and child, and it can (depending on the book) add an element of laughter, which can be good medicine to what can sometimes be a stressful time for parent and child alike, especially for kids who are really anxious and scared about toilet training.

Atlas of Human Anatomy: with Student Consult Access (Netter Basic Science) Review

Honestly, I don't know what I would have done without Netter's. From the time that I bought it, anatomy became a much easier task for me. The reason mostly has to do with the way the figures are drawn. They are so clear (and lifelike) that a lot of times you don't even have to refer to any anatomy text to understand structural relationships. Each figure also usually labels most of the structures that are shown.
I'm not saying that all the figures are excellent. Probably 5-10 % of figures could be improved. But the rest are very good.
I should also say that this book is only an "atlas" and does not have any accompanied text; the index for structures is done in a weird way so usually it's hard to find the structure you're looking for; the book binding is very poor; and the coverage of X-ray, CT, and MRI is poor. There are also some occasional mislabeling errors.
But overall, it is the best anatomy atlas that I have seen, and because of Netter's work, I gave it 4 stars. However, considering all aspects of the book, I'll give it the following rating:

I am using this book as a study tool for my Gross Anatomy course. Anyone who has taken an anatomy class can tell you that color-coding structures is one of the most helpful ways to remember them. There are drawings of bones, muscles, joints, organ systems and explanations of virtually everything that could possibly be covered in an anatomy class. The drawings are excellent and most of the features of the bones are labelled as well. This was very helpful to me since I had to memorize virtually every tubercle, ridge, groove, or other protuberance on every bone of the body. When I had trouble with the skull because the drawings in my class notes were horrible, the drawings in this book were much clearer and helped out a lot. If you are taking an anatomy class, this is a smart and relatively inexpensive investment that will help you remember everything better.
