Gramatica Para la Composicion (Spanish Edition) Review

I'm an advanced Spanish instructor and intermediate language coordinator. This is by far the best textbook of Spanish I've ever seen. Yes, you don't find great pictures, appealing format, that's true. However, the grammatical explanations are just incredible. This book is a link between theoretical linguistics and the classroom. The explanations are based on concept-based systemic-functional grammar of Spanish, instead of the rules of thumb that you will find in most commercial textbooks, which have as many exceptions as rules. If you found yourself thinking "... um, but I can also use the imperfect or the subjunctive here, so how do I explain this when the textbook says the opposite?", then this is the textbook for you. You'll find well-grounded, essential, concise, conceptual explanations rather than list of rules that are not true anyways. And you have EVERYTHING in this book, all the grammar you can possibly think of, including meaningful word-order in Spanish, phonetics, questions of discourse, a task-based approach to composition and academic writing, editing and typical error analysis and the metalinguistic knowledge necessary to be literate and articulate in Spanish. Students can realize how changes in form translate into changes in meaning and how meanings are constructed in Spanish (for example, changes of focus or information prominence with rheme and theme structures). There are lots of exercises based on these explanations. Explanations are in Spanish and most examples are translated into English. This is ideal for an intermediate and advanced level. A book such as this is an indispensable reference guide to vast mosaic that is Hispanic literature. This book, which will primarily be used in intermediate-advanced Spanish literature courses in college, especially in introductory courses in Hispanic literature, will give the reader an overview to the most important works by Hispanic writers starting with Nahuatl literature (the indigenous pre-Columbian peoples of the Americas), covering all of the major literary artistic periods to today.
Please note that the book is entirely in Spanish and is not meant for beginners. As a future high school Spanish teacher, I feel it to be appropriate reading for advanced high school students (AP and native speakers) and up, though one would be hard pressed to find it in use in any high school.
The book is an anthology, and therefore only selected parts of the literary works are presented.
It is a definite must for college Spanish majors, especially those readers whose roots are planted in the Americas, and, quite frankly, anyone wishing to read for themselves the history of the Americas from the vantage point of the participants,.
I can personally attest to the powerful stories contained therein. I was especially moved by the Nahuatl poetry which described the atrocities committed by the conquistadors. Though do not let that detract you or skew your view of the Spanish; all throughout history different peoples have waged wars against each other, killed "in the name of God," and the like. While this doesn't justify their actions, the conscientious readers must always keep things in context, try to understand the frame of mind and reference of the authors, and appreciate the treasures that they left for us to read, assimilate, and hopefully learn something from and change the world for the better.

I read this book as part of a summer assignment entering into the 11th grade in addition to "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl" by Harriet Jacobs. Both are great pieces of African-American historical literature and well worth the read. I couldn't read this book all in one sitting, due to the need to fight the urge to throw up. He detailed descriptions of physical, psycological, and emotional abuse are enough to sicken any one and make you disgusted with the human race.

Atlas of Human Anatomy: with Student Consult Access (Netter Basic Science) Review

Honestly, I don't know what I would have done without Netter's. From the time that I bought it, anatomy became a much easier task for me. The reason mostly has to do with the way the figures are drawn. They are so clear (and lifelike) that a lot of times you don't even have to refer to any anatomy text to understand structural relationships. Each figure also usually labels most of the structures that are shown.
I'm not saying that all the figures are excellent. Probably 5-10 % of figures could be improved. But the rest are very good.
I should also say that this book is only an "atlas" and does not have any accompanied text; the index for structures is done in a weird way so usually it's hard to find the structure you're looking for; the book binding is very poor; and the coverage of X-ray, CT, and MRI is poor. There are also some occasional mislabeling errors.
But overall, it is the best anatomy atlas that I have seen, and because of Netter's work, I gave it 4 stars. However, considering all aspects of the book, I'll give it the following rating:

I just received my copy. As a psychology professor, this text is required for my bookshelf--the same is true for students in this field. However, I was upset to learn that APA has already issued 7 typewritten pages of corrections to this manual, and they will not exchange the first printing for a newer print. This is a resource that you will use for years! Wait to purchase until the kinks have been ironed out and they are on a second or third printing of the manual! I am also disappointed that they do not clearly delineate the changes from the 5th edition. It looks to me that there are few important changes (2 spaces between sentences, etc.). Save your money for at least a few more months!
