How to Write a Sentence: And How to Read One Review

Author Annie Dillard ("The Writing Life," 1989) was asked by a student, "Do you think I could be a writer?" Dillard's response: "Do you like sentences?" According to Stanley Fish, author of "How to Write a Sentence," it's as important for writers to genuinely like sentences as it is for great painters to like paint. For those who enjoy an effective sentence and all that it involves, this short (160 page) book is insightful, interesting and entertaining. For those who consider reading or writing a chore, perhaps this book can help one's interest level and motivation regarding sentences, though the author's intended audience is clearly those with a genuine interest in writing.
Fish would seem to be well qualified to write, having taught at the University of California at Berkeley, Johns Hopkins University, Duke University, and the University of Illinois at Chicago. However, as any student who has suffered with a highly qualified--yet thoroughly boring--professor knows, a significant part of the education/communication process involves instilling motivation. That's where Fish shines. If it might seem that a whole book on sentences has to be boring, Stanley Fish quickly overcomes this perception. His book is divided into 10 chapters: (1) Why Sentences?; (2) Why You Won't Find the Answer in Strunk and White [Strunk and White authored the classic, "The Elements of Style"]; (3) It's Not the Thought That Counts [nothing like a little provocation to get us interested]; (4) What Is a Good Sentence?; (5) The Subordinating Style; (6) The Additive Style; (7) The Satiric Style: The Return of Content; (8) First Sentences; (9) Last Sentences; and (10) Sentences That Are About Themselves (Aren't They All?).
Author Fish includes many examples of powerful sentences from a very wide range of writers, such as Herman Melville, Edgar Allan Poe, Cicero, Lewis Carroll, Michel de Montaigne, Agatha Christie, Charles Dickens and others. Here's one illustrative example from John Updike: Describing the home run Ted Williams hit at his last at-bat in Boston's Fenway Park on September 28, 1960, Updike wrote, "It was in the books while it was still in the sky." Think about that for a minute.
In conclusion, Stanley Fish is an enthusiastic writer, and he manages to convey and transmit his enthusiasm for writing clear, effective sentences in this highly readable book. If you are interested in writing (and reading), this book is worth your careful consideration.
UPDATE on January 29, 2011: I wrote the above from the viewpoint of the reader contemplating buying this book for his or her own use. As I think more about the book, however, there's another possibility worth exploring. Specifically, this book could make a fine graduation (or other) gift to a niece, nephew or friend's child. First, it's short and easy to read, which means it might actually get read. Second, good writing is important in any profession. Third, the book helps reinforce the point that if you want to get good at something, it pays to study experts in the field. Fourth, and perhaps most important, the book supports the point that success in writing--as in virtually all endeavors--comes from practice, practice, practice. That's a pretty useful message to send any student.

Cengage Advantage Books: Looking Out, Looking In Review

This is a really great deal. Each chapter in the book has the *manual* pages so you don't need to buy each product separately. You'll save a lot by buying this book (unless you find a friend who already has the hardcover book, then you can buy a used workbook).
The only difference from the hardcover book is that the pages are in black and white instead of in color. But who cares? Be realistic, you need this for a class, and then once the semester is over you'll never look at it again. The pages are properly numbered and coincide with the hardcover, so if your instructor tells you to turn to page #100, it'll be there like the hardcover book.

The Elements of Style: 50th Anniversary Edition Review

First of all, I want to make it clear that I love this book. I borrowed it from a friend a few years ago, which is why I thought it was high time I got my own copy. Unfortunately, once I did, I found that the actual quality of the printing of this edition is horrible. The paper feels cheap and the text looks as if it were poorly photocopied. You would definitely not expect this from an edition billed as "more durable and elegantly bound edition". The only good thing I could say about this edition is that the cover is indeed beautiful, which is a good thing if all you want is something that looks nice on a bookshelf.
I recommend the 4th edition instead.

The Elements of Style: 50th Anniversary Edition Overview

You know the authors' names. You recognize the title. You've probably used this book yourself. And now The Elements of Style–the most widely read and employed English style manual–is available in a specially bound 50th Anniversary Edition that offers the title's vast audience an opportunity to own a more durable and elegantly bound edition of this time-tested classic.Offering the same content as the Fourth Edition, revised in 1999, the new casebound 50th Anniversary Edition includes a brief overview of the book's illustrious history. Used extensively by individual writers as well as high school and college students of writing, it has conveyed the principles of English style to millions of readers. This new deluxe edition makes the perfect gift for writers of any age and ability level.

Fifty Years of Acclaim for The Elements of Style:

"I first read Elements of Style during the summer before I went off to Exeter, and I still direct my students at Harvard to their definition about the difference between 'that' and 'which.' It is the Bible for good, clear writing." -- Henry Louis Gates Jr.

"For writers of all kinds and sizes the world begins and ends with Strunk and White's Elements of Style. Only something to actually write abouttrumps the list of what is required to put words together in some kind of coherent way. I treasure its presence in my life and salute its fifty years of glory and accomplishment." -- Jim Lehrer

"The Elements of Style remains an unwavering beacon of light in these grammatically troubled times. I would be lost without it."-- Ann Patchett

"To the extent I know how to write clearly at all, I probably taught myself while I was teaching others -- seventh graders, in Flint, Michigan, in 1967. I taughtthem witha copy of Strunk & White lying in full view on my desk, sort of in the way the Gideons leave Bibles in cheap hotel rooms, as a way of saying to the hapless inhabitant: 'In case your reckless ways should strand you here, there's help.' S&W doesn't really teach you how to write, it just tantalizingly reminds you that there's an orderly wayto go about it, that clarity's ever your ideal, but -- really -- it's all going to be up to you."-- RichardFord

"The Elements of Style never seems to go out of date. Its counsel is sound and funny, wise and unpretentious. And while its precepts are a foundation of direct communication, Strunk and White do not insist on a way of writing beyond clear expression. The rest is up to the imagination, the intelligence within."-- David Remnick, editor of The New Yorker

"It's the toughness–the irreverence and implicit laughter–that attracted me to the little book when I was seventeen. I fell in love with Strunk & White's loathing for cant and bloviation, the ruthless cutting of crap, jargon, and extra words. For me, that skeptical directness included a tacit permission by The Elements of Style to break its rules on occasion: an alloy of generosity in the blade, a grace I still admire and still learn from."-- Robert Pinsky

"In the quest for clarity, one can have no better guides than Strunk and White. For me, their book has been invaluable and remains essential."-- Dan Rather

"Eschew surplusage! A perfect book."--Jonathan Lethem

"Not until I started teaching writing and I reread The Elements of Style did I realize that most everything I would be teaching young writers, and everything I would be learning myself as a writer, was contained between the covers of this slim, elegant, wise little book."-- Julia Alvarez

"Strunk and White seared their way into my brain long ago, and I benefit from them daily."-- Steven J. Dubner, co-author of Freakonomics

"Since high school, I have kept a copy of this book handy. That should be unnecessary. I should, by now, have fully internalized The Elements of Style. But sometimes I get entangled in a paragraph that refuses to be 'clear, brief, bold.' I dip back into The Elements of Style and am refreshed. After Scott Simon interviewed me on NPR about whether the word 'e-mail' needs a hyphen (yes, it does), some listeners, including friends of mine, wondered why I had answered in the affirmative when asked, in passing, 'Are you a drunken white man?' Those listeners misheard. 'Strunk and White man' was what Scott said."-- Roy Blount Jr.

"Strunk & White--writing's good-natured law firm--still contains enough sparkling good sense to clean up the whole bloviating blogosphere."-- Thomas Mallon

"I used Strunk -- that's what we called it, Strunk -- as a student at Berkeley fifty years ago. I didn't know that it was new, and that we were the first generation to be educated in The Elements of Style. I got a firm foundation in the English language, learned to write basically, and could depict the realistic world. Then I was able to become an impressionist and expressionist." -- Maxine Hong Kingston

"Strunk and White's gigantic little book must be the most readable advice on writing ever written. Side by side with Roget, Shakespeare, the Bible, and adictionary, it's an essential forevery writer's shelf."-- X.J. Kennedy...

They Say/I Say: The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing Review

I received this book too late to use it for my persuasive writing class. While I had moderate success with my other book, Everything's an Argument, I would certainly use this book if I had to do it all over again.
They Say/I Say is a short book with a simple premise -- it correctly states that no argument occurs in a vacuum, but must depend upon what others have to say about it. Moreover, the authors believe one of the principle difficulties which students have with persuasive writing is an inability to correctly utilize these necessary ingredients (introduce what others have to say on the subject, and then present their own voice on the matter). Though I am not a writing teacher, I have found this to be the case in my classes.
TSIS summarizes the important aspects of this conversation in persuasive writing and provides templates for students to summarize what others say, introduce their own points, and perform various other techniques. While one may think the use of such templates leads to formulaic writing, the authors suggest the opposite is the case. By understanding how to shape their ideas, students can learn to better express their orginal thoughts, thus making their writing more individual.
While I am inclined to agree, TSIS is not perfect. It certainly cannot be used as a thorough textbook on all persuasive writing, nor am I completely convinced that the exercises provided in the book are the most effective at using the templates in student writing. If teachers can get students to incorporate the ideas of TSIS into student's writing, however, they will accomplish much. Check it out for yourself.

They Say/I Say: The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing Overview

Identifying the moves that matter in academic writing in ways that students can readily understand and apply.
"They Say / I Say" shows that writingwell means mastering some key rhetorical moves, the most important of which involves summarizing what others have said ("they say") to set upone's own argument("I say"). In addition toexplaining the basic moves, this book provideswriting templates that show students explicitlyhow to make these moves in their own writing.

A Pocket Style Manual 5e with 2009 MLA Review

A Valuable Resource *****
Let's get one thing clear. This book is not a comprehensive book on grammar, syntax, or anything else. It's designed to be a handy little quick-reference for busy people. In this respect, the book succeeds admirably. It covers everything you might need to look up in a pinch--I'm a writer and it's nice to have something that is even faster than the internet to use. That's the goal of this book (I think).
The spiral binding is nice--it's a bother to have a reference book that won't stay open when you are trying to type on a computer. Hacker thought of everything to make the book more efficient to use. The trim size is odd. I think it's designed to fit in a back pocket, although I don't know any woman that would ever stuff a book into her pants, I guess it's possible that a male reader might do it.
It's a little pricey for a quick-reference, but I'm betting that Amazon will discount the book eventually. At least it qualifies for super-saver shipping at full price. Great little reference!

Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 11th Edition Review

This is a fine dictionary. It even smells good. Too hefty to be portable, it is nevertheless a perfect desk dictionary, starting with a seventeen-page explanatory chart and notes, an essay on the English language, and a guide to pronunciation. te volume continues with excellent definitions that are sometimes accompanied by b&w line drawings, and finishes with sections on foreign words & phrases, biographical names, geographical names, signs & symbols in various fields of endeavo, punctuation, capitals & italics, documenting sources, forms of address and an index. [..]
This is the most comprehensive collegiate dictionary to date, with many new entries since 1996's tenth edition, and it is well organized wih a nice clean font (though it may be a bit troublesome for those who are far-sighted). It always amazes me that we can purchase so much information so inexpensively. This is a terrific resource -- it's time to update your dictionary!!

The Chicago Manual of Style, 16th Edition Review

The new version is certainly worth the purchase price! They've added an entire new section on electronic publishing, updated capitalization rules (web [lowercase] is now acceptable), made things more consistent, and speaking of consistency, added a new section on parallel structure. :)
The updated rules for numbers now allow me to toss the ancient GPO Style Manual kept handy for that (I work in science and technology), not to mention the new usage section covering most of the troublesome words means I'll be reaching for my American Heritage dictionary less frequently.
Well done Chicago! Thank you!

The Associated Press Stylebook 2009 (Associated Press Stylebook & Briefing on Media Law) Review

I am a copy editor and writer who uses the AP Stylebook all of the time, and while I usually think on-line books are better than paper, the AP on-line was making me nuts. The on-line version is very difficult to use - doesn't bring up entries for the most basic searches - and not very user-friendly. The updated paper version is way better. It has extensive information on the use of numbers, IT language, a must-have section on punctuation, independent and dependent clauses, serial commas, etc. It is quick and easy to use to find answers for such usages as continuously or continually, effect or affect. The punctuation section alone is worth the price, and the Stylebook has improved my copy editing immensely. I recommend using for editors who must use several different style guides. Create a spreadsheet with your most common style guides and uses (serial commas, punctuation questions, IT word spellings, capitalization rules, etc.) and pull the information from your AP Stylebook for quick reference. This spreadsheet will improve your copy editing time and keep you from confusing styles.

The Associated Press Stylebook 2009 (Associated Press Stylebook & Briefing on Media Law) Overview

The style of the Associated Press is the gold standard of news writing. With The AP Stylebook in hand, you can learn to write with the clarity and professionalism for which the Associated Press is famous. Fully revised and updated, this new edition contains more than 3,000 A to Z entries—including more than 200 new ones—detailing the AP's rules on grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, abbreviation and word and numeral usage. New entries include anti-spyware, high-definition, iPhone, outsourcing, podcast, text messaging, social networking, snail mail, WMD and Wikipedia.

You'll also find answers to such widespread questions as:

• How should bankruptcy and mergers and acquisitions be covered? • When should the names of government bodies or businesses be spelled out and when should they be abbreviated? • What are the general definitions of the major religious movements? • Which companies do the big media conglomerates own? • Who are all the members of the British Commonwealth? • What constitutes "fair use"? • How should box scores for baseball games be filed, and how should sports terms like minicamp and wild card be used • What exactly does the Freedom of Information Act cover?

With invaluable additional sections on the unique guidelines for business and sports reporting and on how you can guard against libel and copyright infringement, The AP Stylebook is the one reference that all writers, editors and students cannot afford to be without.

Everything's an Argument Review

This book is a set text for an academic writing course at my university in Australia. Overall I thought it was clear and (even though it comes in at 500 pages) concisely written, and full of modern examples of a wide range of arguments in many different media. It's also small enough to carry around to classes and the full colour pages definitely made reading it more interesting. I think this book is best suited for people who have a decent grasp on the English language and are looking to enhance their writing through persuasive, logical and engaging arguments. If this is you, then I think that "Everything's an Argument" can help.

Everything's an Argument Overview

This best-selling brief text shows students how to analyze all kinds of arguments — not just essays and editorials, but clothes, cars, ads, and Web site designs — and then how to use what they learn to write their own effective arguments. Andrea Lunsford and John Ruszkiewicz's instruction is engaging, informal, and jargon-free. Emphasizing inclusiveness, humor, and visual argument, it makes Everything's an Argument student-centered and immediately accessible. Students like this book because it helps them understand how a world of argument already surrounds them; instructors like it because it helps students construct their own arguments about that world.

"They Say / I Say": The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing with Readings Review

Even as a writer, writing teacher, and rhetorician, I could not see how many gaps I left in my writing until this book. So much of the writing process was just flung at me in public school that I was fortunate to absorb dribs and drabs. Graff, Birkenstein, and Durst dismantle writing into a system, based on the most recent rhetorical research, and lay the process out in short chapters, plain language, and a scheme of templates that students can use to kick-start their own writing.
The authors' thesis is that writing is an uncomplicated process which can be reduced to a handful of rhetorical components. If students see writing as a social act, joining a larger conversation already in process, they will produce engaging writing which both they and their teachers will enjoy. Since the book is laced with examples of effective and ineffective writing, there is no doubt as to which the authors aim for, making evaluation a simple, somewhat objective process.
This book seeks to be accessible to a mass audience. It's written in vernacular English, using examples from current culture and respected print sources. It is so straightforward that teachers can use it at multiple levels, from advanced middle school up through college composition. It's so explicit that it could even be used without a teacher, with only a writing group or college writing center to fill in the role of hands-on assistance with individual problems.
This "With Readings" edition contains the full text of Graff and Birkenstein's original short primer of the same title. The original is less than 150 pages and can be digested in small segments by teachers and students alike. This edition contains over 250 pages of articles from respected print and online publications to guide students into the larger writerly discourse. Selected authors include George Will, Thomas Friedman, Eric Schlosser, and Barack Obama.
My only regret is that I did not receive this book sooner. My teaching career up to this point would have been both easier and more productive if I had enjoyed this text, which simply states everything I wanted to say. Both teachers and students often make writing a more difficult process than it needs to be, but this book strips the mystification away and makes classroom writing as easy and clear-cut as the conversations students already have.

Moleskine Ruled Notebook Large Review

I've been journaling ever since I was a pimply-faced teenager, and now I'm 31. In that time, I've used all varieties of notebooks, and filled them all. I came across the Moleskine brand a few years ago, and now I won't use anything else. The large ruled notebook is sturdy, of excellent construction, holds I think 265 pages, and the pages will not fall out. This notebook is best for writers and diarists.
I wouldn't use this book for school because, first of all, it is expensive. Second of all, it's a bit of overkill. I doubt you'll take a class in which you'll have time to fill up this notebook. You'll be more organized in a class if you buy a simple lab book or composition book to take notes in for each class.
I know a lot of people who try to write in jounals. They buy them with the best intentions, write a couple of pages, and then seem to forget about them and eventually buy ANOTHER journal, in which they will write a few pages and forget about. The key is just to keep the SAME journal, to keep in it in the same safe place, and to write in it whenever you feel like it, even if months go by without you touching it. If someone buys you another journal, fill up the first one first, and then move on to the new one. You can learn from my experience and start with the best, which is Moleskine. Otherwise . . . do whatever you want. The main thing is just to have something to write in.
I've also used all variety of pens. My choice is the Pilot Precise V5. Every now and then you'll get a bum one, that you've just got to throw away because it's not writing smoothly or properly. But, for the most part, these are the best choice for journaling and writing. They are fine point. They last longer than gel ink. They require no pressure whatsoever to be placed on the tip, as ball-point pens do, and they don't smear.

On Writing Well, 30th Anniversary Edition: The Classic Guide to Writing Nonfiction Review

I usually only write reviews for books I can praise. I actively avoid giving criticism about books that have, as this one does, a large and enthusiastic following. I feel compelled to write now because I think that many will not be as well served as they imagine after reading these reviews.
I think this book is popular for many understandable and, in themselves, good reasons. The writer is up-beat and optimistic. He supplies simple formulas for complex problems. He has both wit and charm. He supplies many funny stories. He makes fun of pompous academics and pedagogues. He is empathetic and warm. His instructions are personal, not distant or abstract. He requires little of the reader and avoids pesky formalities. For all these reasons, one should be attracted to a non-fictional book of reminiscence about writing. However, all these virtues are not those of a book teaching writing.
Indeed, many dislike books that try to teach writing because the majority are rigorous, boring, and impersonal. So, it is no wonder that against those demanding and dry texts this humane presentation appears as an oasis. However, it is a mistake to think that those emotional values make this a good writing text.
This book's relation with writing is much like a movie's relation with its topic: a narrative about a thing more than an instruction. For instance, "Field of Dreams" may make us happy, but it hardly is likely to make us better baseball players. Here most of Zinsser's time is expended in context, quotation of others, and folksy tale. These are topped off with a brief commands - "Go to it" - that have a cheerleader's enthusiasm and lack of content. He celebrates one style, his own, which is short and informal to the exclusion of the hundreds of others that have graced our language. He gives little help with formal discourse. He feels free to judge -- for instance scientists -- outside his field and beside the point. He makes numerous grammatical errors and seems to recognize the dash as the only punctuation. He generalizes egregiously about topics that are enormous and yet undefined, for instance "the human element."
In short, he is less an instructor and more a coach.
As I said, his many strengths have understandably broad appeal, but this book would be inadequate for the college classes I teach. You may not need such formal help and that is fine as long as you do not think it appears here.

Physical Examination and Health Assessment Review

This required text is (for once!) not dry. Jarvis provides plenty of tactful sample questions to ask patients during interviews. The author takes great care to define medical terms within the text so I'm not constantly reaching for my medical dictionary. There is no glossary, but the accompanying student lab manual has one for each chapter. Text also includes so many more photographs than Porth's Pathophysiology textbook.

Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life Review

This is not a how-to book. This is not a New Age manual for freeing your creativity in ethereal ways. This is Anne Lamott, for heaven's sake...and that means it's funny! As in, laugh- till-you-can't-read-the-words-through-the-tears-in-your-eyes funny. (Some call this therapy, and I'm inclined to agree.)
Though aimed at writers, this book is full of sage advice and razor-edged honesty for the average joe. If you're a writer--and I claim to be one--it's more than a few anecdotes and good advice; it's a lifeline in the thrashing seas of rough-draftdom, a foothold on the sands of jealousy and vain ambition. Anne makes it clear that writing must be pursued for something other than mere publication. (Though, to be honest, I know she's just trying to let the majority of us down easy.) Writing is about letting go, growing, facing truths, and holding on.
I'm hooked on Lamott. She slaps me in the face with her startling revelations, nudges me in the ribs with her unpredictable humor, and prods my frozen little writer's hands back into action with warm compassion. This book won't solve the mechanical aspects of my writing, or lead me on the path of structural excellence, but it will spark my creativity, free my characters to be true to themselves, and, ultimately, shake me from my doldrums back into the writing mode.
In a society addicted to mindless facts and information, "Bird by Bird" reminds us--writers or otherwise--that it's all about heart. Heart and mind and soul dancing together, even if they step all over each other's feet.

The CAFE Book: Engaging All Students in Daily Literary Assessment and Instruction Review

Surely, if you are reading this review, you are probably a fan or a devotee of this book: Daily Five, The, the book that provided a framework for literacy instruction that revolutionized classrooms across the country. After implementing "the Sisters" authentic literacy practices, teachers around the country asked, "What's next?" and the Sisters responded by writing "The Cafe Book". It's certainly a worthy partner of their first book.
Washingtonians Gail Boushey and Joan Moser are veteran master teachers, reflective, and insightful in their approach to the craft of education. This book provides the classroom tested, works in progress reading teaching that is happening in their classroom. The CAFE approach allows children to select literacy goals based on their reading needs (comprehension, accuracy, fluency, and expanding vocabulary), gives a framework for conferring with students, and offers tons of classroom tested tips and hints to make your reading teaching more successful.
The Sisters writing is very transparent, examples of actual "language" they use with the kids, and extremely user friendly. Unlike some other education books, which require hours of time, or a master's degree to understand, the Sisters make their books easily accessible, easily understandable, and easy to put into practice. Not only that, the lessons and ideas are mighty powerful indeed.
Don't worry. If you haven't implemented the Daily 5 into your classroom, the Cafe book can easily meet your needs as it provides yet another framework that can be adapted in your classroom. However, I can see the power of implementing both ideas into the room for true impact. If you are a newbie, I can't highly recommend enough "Daily 5". As a mentor with first year teachers, I've seen the impact of the framework on their daily reading block, and it's been quite amazing.
Not only is the book loaded with pictures, but it comes with a CD that is ready to be used, with copies of the forms they have in the book that can be printed out.
The Sisters are truly on the path of authentic, real life teaching practices. If you are a first year or twentieth year teacher like myself, in kindergarten or in fifth grade, this book will be an irreplaceable feature, and one that's frequently borrowed by colleagues after you brag about its impact, for years to come.
Yes, it's THAT good.

The CAFE Book: Engaging All Students in Daily Literary Assessment and Instruction Overview

"All readers of any age need instruction and support that helps them become more independent and self-reflective in their work." – Gail Boushey and Joan Moser

Gramatica Para la Composicion (Spanish Edition) Review

I'm an advanced Spanish instructor and intermediate language coordinator. This is by far the best textbook of Spanish I've ever seen. Yes, you don't find great pictures, appealing format, that's true. However, the grammatical explanations are just incredible. This book is a link between theoretical linguistics and the classroom. The explanations are based on concept-based systemic-functional grammar of Spanish, instead of the rules of thumb that you will find in most commercial textbooks, which have as many exceptions as rules. If you found yourself thinking "... um, but I can also use the imperfect or the subjunctive here, so how do I explain this when the textbook says the opposite?", then this is the textbook for you. You'll find well-grounded, essential, concise, conceptual explanations rather than list of rules that are not true anyways. And you have EVERYTHING in this book, all the grammar you can possibly think of, including meaningful word-order in Spanish, phonetics, questions of discourse, a task-based approach to composition and academic writing, editing and typical error analysis and the metalinguistic knowledge necessary to be literate and articulate in Spanish. Students can realize how changes in form translate into changes in meaning and how meanings are constructed in Spanish (for example, changes of focus or information prominence with rheme and theme structures). There are lots of exercises based on these explanations. Explanations are in Spanish and most examples are translated into English. This is ideal for an intermediate and advanced level. If you want to read more on this line, get also Spanish/ English Contrasts by Stanley too, and read Dwight Bolinger's articles.

Gramatica Para la Composicion (Spanish Edition) Overview

Integrating grammar and composition, this comprehensive new edition guides the advanced student through progressively more complex types of writing by organizing the grammar lessons on a functionalist basis around the needs of composition. This innovative approach to teaching Spanish grammar and composition promotes systematic language development and enables students to strengthen their expressive and editing skills in the language in order to write more effectively and more confidently. Refined by years of classroom testing and analysis of the problems students encounter, this bestselling textbook has been substantially rewritten and incorporates current research in composition, pedagogy, second-language acquisition, and linguistics. Expanded self-correcting exercises are also available online, making "Gramatica para la" composition one of the most valuable textbooks available for advanced students of Spanish. This title focuses on work in six level-appropriate types of composition: description, synopsis, personal narrative, creative narrative, exposition, and argumentation. It is based on ACTFL guidelines for students progressing from intermediate to advanced levels of proficiency. It covers syntax, dictionary skills, problematic word distinctions, and rhetorical features of discourse structure. It contains exercises on grammar practice, working with sentences and paragraphs, guided essays, and free composition. New to the second Edition: each lesson has been clearly divided into two distinct parts - presentation (material that students prepare before class) and Application (the activities they do in class or as homework); and, practices individuals have been expanded and recreated as self-checking exercises that provide immediate feedback and scoring. These practices are available for free online at our associated website. It includes images from William Bull's "Visual Grammar of Spanish" help with distinctions that seem difficult. It contains an Instructor's Manual - available for free online - reviews teaching and grading methodology for writing-intensive courses, offers suggestions for syllabus organization and for teaching each lesson, and provides additional exercises and activities. Random House Webster's Pocket Grammar, Usage, and Punctuation: Second Edition (Pocket Reference Guides) Review

I learned English as a third language and did not get to use it professionally until well into my 20s. There were gaps and errors in my knowledge of formal English, and they had been a hindrance throughout my career.
Looking back, I regret deeply for not studying a reference guide such as this one earlier. It covers the basic grammatical rules, lists the common spelling errors and even discusses the usage of all the important words and phrases. What benefits me the most, nonetheless, is the section on punctuation. I had never quite mastered the usage of colons and semicolons, but now I feel much more comfortable using them.
I purchased the ebook version for my Nook. The formatting looks fine on the small screen. The only constant annoyance is the page number, which corresponds to the paperback version instead of the electronic one. Overall, this is a great reference for anyone who had not gone through rigorous training on professional English writing.
