Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight Volume 8: Last Gleaming Review
Warning: Spoilers ahead.Last Gleaming, to me, feels a lot like "Chosen," the series finale of BtVS. It is good, but flawed in many ways. Here let me list the stuff I like and dislike in this issue.
The Good:
1. Nice set-up for the following seasons. With all of its flaws, I felt the biggest success of Chosen is a good set up for Angel S5, which is my favorite season in the Buffyverse. Likewise, Last Gleaming did a wonderful job setting up for Buffy S9 and A&F. I hope to see more of my favorite characters, especially Illyria and Lorne (would love to see Jo Chen's rendition of them). Now with the right to Angel coming to DarkHorse, this may come true.
2. Giles, skinless Warren, and the Master die. Willow/Kennedy break up. At first I was pissed when Giles died, on a second thought, it actually makes a lot of sense and Buffy will really have to stand on her own. I never liked Warren or the Master being revived. Of all the interesting characters died in the Buffyverse, Wes, Cordy, Fred, Doyle, Tara, Lilah, Lindsey, Anya, or Mayor Wilkins, all are far superior to Warren or the Master. Why don't they revive some of these more interesting characters? And I did not like Kennedy, but I admit I was biased here.
3. Faith. I really loved Faith and it is so nice to see her growing up in S8. Angel did a great job sticking with her in her darkest hour and gave her a chance for redemption. And now she is paying Angel back by sticking with him even when everyone "wants his head on a pike." Good stuff!
4. No more magic. I feel sometimes the supernatural elements are a distraction to the human drama in the series. Now with (most) of such things gone, hopefully the focus will be back on the humanity side of things.
5. Buffy/Angel in #36. As it should be. Enough said.
6. Snappy Spike dialogues. Even though I quite dislike his obsession, I always enjoyed his snappy and sarcastic dialogues. It is nice to "hear" them again.
The Bad:
1. Angel killing Giles. Of all the people, why (possessed) Angel killing Giles? I always consider Angel and Angelus to be different entities, and don't like him atoning for Angelus' deeds. Now he has to atone for Giles' death? It felt too artificial and contrived. I guess the purpose is to set up a separate Angel & Faith series.
2. Buffy. Right after the passionate reunion with Angel, and declaring that he is "(not only) the love of my life but the man I will live it with." Then a few pages later she is having sex fantasies about Spike? Is she truly turning into the "Slut Queen of Slutdonia?"
3. Spike's bug ship. WTF?
4. Spike leaving Angelverse. I found the frenemy relationship between Angel and Spike on AtS S5 far more intriguing and hilarious than his obsessive follower role with Buffy. I will definitely miss the climatic Angel/Spike fight for the Mountain Dew Cup or the hilarious puppet Angel/Spike fight, or the Cavemen vs. Astronaut argument. I guess I won't see much of those, huh?
Hope for the new S9 and Angel & Faith.
1. More Angel characters, please! I admit l liked characters on AtS more than BtVS. Please let me see more Illyria, Gunn, Connor, and Lorne. And please revive (at least some of) Doyle, Cordy, Fred, Wes, Lilah, and Lindsey, and BtVS's Tara and Anya, too. With the right to Angel series coming back to Dark Horse, and several of them have the "Perpetuity Clause" with Wolfram & Hart. It should not be too hard. I would also love to see Drusilla back.
2. Lots of cross-overs. I admit I have a very soft spot for Buffy/Angel. I always find their story to be "epic!" (Spanning years and continents. Lives ruined and blood shed. Epic! to quote Logan from Veronica Mars) It kills me to think they will be apart, again. Then all I can hope is a lot of cross overs, especially the main characters.
3. Fang Gang/Angel Investigations. Will this entity be revived or come in a different incarnation? I surely hope so.
