Now Eat This Diet: Lose Up to 10 Pounds in Just 2 Weeks Eating 6 Meals a Day Review

I bought Rocco's Now Eat This book last year. The recipes were so amazing that I started losing 3 pounds a week! The reason I could stay on this diet was because with Rocco's recipes, I felt like I was still eating my favorite foods - burgers, mac and cheese, fried chicken, brownies etc. I love that Rocco came out with Now Eat This Diet because it really helps me put together daily meal plans. No more guess work, I just simply combine what recipes I like best for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This book also has EVEN MORE recipes of my favorite comfort foods. There are a ton of photos in the book which come in handy when I am unsure whether I am making the dishes properly. The layout of the book is also good and very easy to follow. I'd say, overall, this book is even better than the last one.

Why We Get Fat: And What to Do About It Review

The brilliant thing about science is that when something is disproved once, it's disproved forever. The not-so-brilliant thing about public health policy is that it has little to do with science.
Everyone in the developed world knows what's causing our obesity epidemic. BBC nailed it: "We eat too much, and too much of the wrong things," and Michelle Obama tells us "We have to move more." Clearly what we need is a balanced diet of lean meats, some good fats, and complex carbohydrates like fruit, vegetables and whole grain bread, and exercise of 30 to 90 minutes per day. Their prescription is completely reasonable and makes intuitive sense.
It is neat, plausible, and wrong. It has in fact been disproved, as nearly as "disproof" can exist in nutrition science.
In his previous book, Good Calories Bad Calories, respected science journalist Gary Taubes exhaustively researched and cited two centuries worth of research in nutrition. He came to the conclusion that none of those recommendations is supported by science, because the fundamental theory on which they're based is wrong. Why We Get Fat is an updated summary of that earlier work, much quicker and easier to read, with some significant points clarified.
The most important point of the book is that all those public recommendations -- the food pyramid, the "eat food, not too much" approach, everything we know about a balanced lifestyle -- is founded on the premise of Calories In vs. Calories Out. That we get fat because we eat too many calories, or we don't burn enough of them through movement. But this is nonsense. It's not just wrong, it is actually not a statement about what causes obesity at all (or heart disease, cancer or diabetes, for that matter.) It is, in Taubes' words, a "junior high level mistake," because it tells us nothing about fat accumulation. If we get fat, by definition we have taken in more calories than we've put out -- but WHY we took in those calories, or didn't burn them, is the key point.
Taubes reviews the scientific literature (rather than the popular press) and presents a conclusion that was common knowledge before WWII, and heresy afterward: we get fat because our fat cells have become disregulated and are taking nutrients that should be available to other tissues. Like a tumor, the cells live for themselves rather than in balance with the rest of the body. And since those nutrients aren't available, we become hungry and tired. Therefore we eat more, and move less.
For the chronic dieters among us, one passage about animal models will explain decades of frustration. Rodents with a particular part of the hypothalamus destroyed would become obese and/or sedentary *as a consequence* of their bodies putting on more fat. "After the surgery, their fat tissue sucks up calories to make more fat; this leaves insufficient fuel for the rest of the body...The only way to prevent these animals from getting obese is to starve them...they get fat not by overeating but by eating at all." Sound familiar?
The problem isn't one of gluttony and sloth, as Taubes refers to it, but of hormone balance. Simply put, some people are more sensitive to the hormone effects of insulin, cortisol, and a few other -ols, than other people are. The more sensitive you are, the more you're likely to get fat, and the more fat you're likely to get, in the presence of even small amounts of carbohydrate -- and in the absence of enough fat.
That's right, this book advocates eating fat. Not just moderately, but as much fat as possible, up to 78% of calories. Not lean meats, not Jenny-O 99.6% fat-free turkey, not skinless chicken breasts, but lard. Yes, lard. The healthy way of eating, according to Taubes, is moderately high protein and high fat. Yes, high fat. About a 3:1 ratio of fat to protein, and almost no carbohydrates. (Telling people to eat a balanced diet containing carbohydrates is, he says, equivalent to telling smokers to include a balanced serving of cigarettes.) And he demonstrates exactly why a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet is the most heart-healthy approach, as borne out by several dozen recent studies.
While Taubes acknowledges that exercise seems to be good for us for a variety of reasons, weight control isn't one of them. Study after study conducted by proponents of exercise have admitted that they see no compelling evidence for exercise as a weight-loss tool. And it makes sense if you throw out the calories in/calories out model of why we get fat. If we're fat because our fat tissues are starving the rest of our cells of fuel, exercise is just going to make us hungrier and more tired, not leaner and more fit. (It's worth noting that according to Taubes, in the 1930s obese patients were treated with bed rest.)
[This review was edited to clarify the following point.] The main thrust of Taubes' argument, however, surrounds sugar and to a lesser extent any carbohydrate. Insulin is the primary hormone that fixes fat in the fat cells. This is why Type I diabetics lose weight: they're not producing enough insulin. Since insulin is manufactured in direct response to carbohydrates, if you don't eat them, you won't have a mechanism by which to store fat. (Taubes notes that this mechanism is not controversial; it simply hasn't had an impact on nutrition policy.) Taubes argues that any success in standard diets can be attributed directly to the dieter's reduced intake of carbohydrates, especially sugars and particularly fructose.
Once the underlying cause of obesity is understood (hormone balance, not gluttony/sloth) the recommendations on what to do about it are surprisingly simple and therefore brief. This is a book about the science of nutrition, not a diet book, but there is a list of recommended foods in the Appendix. The book does not tell you how to eat in a restaurant. But it does tell you that the issue isn't in your brain, your willpower, your character, your job, your environment or even (except to the extent that you're sensitive to carbohydrate) in your genes. The problem with fat is in your fat cells.
For a lay audience, this book is as good as it gets if you want to read actual science about health and nutrition. If you're of scientific or technical bent, read Good Calories Bad Calories first, then give Why We Get Fat to your parents.

Eat For Health: The Mind Makeover (Unabridged) Review

Eat For Health makes more sense than any other eating plan I have ever read about and over the years I have read more than my share. Some time ago I read about Calorie Restriction and how it is indeed the only proven thing to extend the longevity on one's life. (See calorierestriction dot org.) It involves restricting the number of calories that one eats but it also means that the calories you eat MUST be nutritious calories. Dr. Fuhrman takes this even further or at least makes it simple to apply. Using the information in his book all you need to do is make sure your diet includes an abundance of these nutrient rich foods. There is no need to count calories. If you stop eating the Standard American Diet [SAD] and adopt this nutrient dense way of eating you will at least greatly reduce your chances of ever developing heart disease, cancer, autoimmune diseases and who knows what else and you will not be overweight or be doomed to living your final years in physical pain and suffering from conditions like arthritis and type 2 diabetes etc.
I am in my 60s and I am 5 ft. 11 in. tall. In January of 2009 I was 205 pounds and decided it was time to lose a few pounds. I switched from eating what I thought was a very healthy diet which included avoiding junk like MSG and high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oils and included seafood and almost never any dairy or red meat or poultry, to eating strictly vegan. I cut out the seafood and the cheese and eggs. I lost 12 pounds but could not lose anymore. In June I decided to drink a lot of grapefruit juice and sometimes had nothing but grapefruit juice all day and sometimes I would have one vegetarian meal. I did this for a couple of weeks and lost another 12 pounds but I was hungry all the time. Then I read Dr. Fuhrman's book, Eat To Live, which is quite similar to Eat For Health. I started following it, eating the nutrient dense foods and one helping of beans/legumes a day and no more than one serving of grains/starch a day. I literally stuffed myself. I would spend my entire one-hour lunch at work eating. I don't drink fruit juice anymore. I eat the fruit instead and lot's of it. By the end of August I had lost another 12 pounds, getting my weight down to 169. When I started on this journey I never really expected to reach this point but when I saw how easy it had become there was no reason not to. I went from a 38 inch waste to a 32 inch waist. This information is the key to losing weight in a healthy manner and the key to keeping it off and living a healthy life free of disease. Here it is now December and I haven't yet had the cold that I normally come down with in October or November every year. I am sure eating right is contributing to this fact.
The nice thing about Eat For Health is that it offers the reader more options. It is designed into 4 phases so that you can stop at any phase you wish or can move from one phase to the next whenever you choose to at your own pace. You don't have to give up on animal foods entirely. This does not require being a vegetarian or being a vegan but it does require being a nutritarian and greatly limiting the animal foods that you eat.
Eat For Health is beyond calorie restriction, better than The Rave Diet and Life Style and and makes Fit For Life look archaic. Don't get me wrong those are good books in themselves but not as good as what Dr. Fuhrman delivers. Dr. Fuhrman IS a medical doctor and a former world class athlete. He lives by the information in his books as does his family. He has the scientific backing and studies that support his approach and he makes more sense than anyone else out there. This is pure logic people. Are your ready for it?
Get the hard copies of the books [It is a 2 book set] and get the audio CD to listen to. That's what I recommend and that's what I did.

Eat For Health: The Mind Makeover (Unabridged) Overview

Hundreds of medical doctors utilize Dr. Fuhrman s Eat For Health system in their medical practice. It is because all diets fail, for vast majority, in the long-run, unless there is an adequate understanding of nutrient density of food and how low-nutrient-eating leads to food cravings, food addictions and fuels overeating behavior. Dr. Fuhrman s Eat For Health is a medical breakthrough because without this fascinating information you are essentially destined to be struggling with dieting forever, compelled to consume excess calories, and not be able to comfortable and permanently maintain a lighter, healthier weight. Dr. Fuhrman is the founder of the high nutrient eating style and a pioneer in the growing field of nutritional medicine. Now with Eat For Health, (a two-book set) Dr. Fuhrman has taken his bestselling Eat To Live book a gigantic step further, he has made his approach nation-friendly, now everyone can easily do it. "Dr. Fuhrman s nutritional approach to the prevention and management of chronic disease is the most significant medical advance I have seen in my career as a physician." John V. Forrest, M.D. Professor UCSD Medical School. Thousands who have recovered from their medical problems have been calling Dr. Fuhrman s Eat For Health program a medical miracle. We are not just talking about the people who have lost their excess weight after failing for years on one diet after another, but diseases, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, allergies, asthma, autoimmune illnesses (including lupus) and headaches have simply melted away. Published medical research already documents this as the most effective weight loss method ever recorded in medical history. There was an average two year weight loss of 53 pounds. Most importantly they kept the weight off. This complete two-book set actually teaches you how to prefer a health-promoting diet-style over a disease-promoting diet. The hallmark of healthy eating is to consume more foods that contain a high nutrient density and less food with a low nutrient density. To make it easy, Dr. Fuhrman has scored thousands of foods so that in each of the 4 phases, the nutrient density of the suggested menus increases. The outcome is that when you eat enough high nutrient foods you can reverse most medical problems without drugs. If diets never worked for you in the past you will now understand why and you will be motivated to lose your excess weight and get well again. Eat For Health can save your life. Dr. Fuhrman s MANDI food and meal scoring system (patent pending) lets you know exactly how healthy your diet is. You can choose your own level of nutritional excellence and you can move forward to a higher level at your own pace when you are ready or you can pump it up to phase four to get maximal weight loss and therapeutic effect to reverse disease. I Can Make You Thin: The Revolutionary System Used by More Than 3 Million People (Book and CD) Review

For almost 3 years now I have been handing this book and 'mind-reprogramming' CD to every patient who comes to me to lose weight, or who is caught up in the mentality of diets, scales, cravings, or overeating.
I am *delighted* that this version of "I Can Make You Thin" is finally available on Amazon.com rather than having to hunt it from the UK site. The long wait is over!
At the risk of making this book seem too simple, here are Paul McKenna's 4 golden rules...
1. When you are hungry, eat.
2. Eat what you want (not what you think you "should".)
3. Eat consciously and enjoy every mouthful.
4. When you are full stop.
I've seen other "I Can Make You Thin" reviews that dismiss the 4 rules as just obvious common sense. I'm not sure what common sense they can really mean since the rules make a mockery of the majority of get thin / lose weight approaches around. Rule 2 in particular certainly disagrees with the 'common sense' that I was taught as a medical doctor.
Even if the rules are common sense, McKenna needs to be given great credit for showing people HOW to live these habits. Hopefully you are buying this for the results, not just to have a fun read and a relaxing, new-wavy listen.
Yes, the coverpages are a bit hypey, but the inside is less so. The book is refreshingly thin :), jargon-free, and entertaining.
McKenna's style also involves techniques such as tapping (TFT/EFT), hypnosis and NLP . Hypnosis is what first made Paul famous, and I've seen NLP Practitioners review this and say they knew all of these tricks before. In NLP terms Paul is saying that the Golden Rules are the "model" for being "naturally thin". Just knowing all the geewiz psych techniques won't help if you have the wrong model as I suspect most NLPers do.
More importantly, you don't need any of these techniques to apply the 4 golden rules and lose weight.
Most people can go the book & CD, discover the Aha moments, and get started on transforming their relationship with food and their weight straight away.
There might be a group of people that could eat according to the 4 rules and not be thin, but I agree with what Paul says. For myself, I'm yet to meet such a person.
I have counseled people who thought it didn't work for them, but it turned out they hadn't gotten the rules into their behavior, so here are some extra pointers...
- Just listening to the CD over and over doesn't seem to be enough. The book plays a big part too. Expect to re-read the book at least once. You can succeed without the CD, so if it doesn't suit you, no sweat.
- Don't add more rules. Extra rules almost always conflict with the four golden rules. Must eat breakfast? No. Just eat when you are hungry. Have to eat only fresh food? Check you really want to eat it, and whether you might want to eat anything else a bit more. Etc, etc.
- Having trouble visualizing? Just act 'as if' you are visualizing, or on the CD just leave it to Paul.
- Don't make exercise the focus. Improved fitness will improve your chances of living longer, but unfortunately the best research evidence is that exercise doesn't help much in losing weight. Keep to the four rules, which are all about food and getting back in control.
- If you have a question or a difficulty, the answer is somewhere in the book. The book alone truly is comprehensive (unlike watching YouTube videos or reading this review.) Indeed the updates have covered the two or three remaining gaps I had found before, including the extra information for self-sabotage issues.
In summary, McKenna is not the only person to propose this way of eating, but his is the most accessible version I know about. His is also the most likely to reach out from the page and permanently change your thinking and your behavior, and thereby your weight.
You can buy his measly book just to prove Paul wrong :)
Oh and then come back here and add your own review. Let people know what your results have been, whatever they are. No one book/CD can fit everyone but "I Can Make You Thin" deserves way more reviews here on Amazon from people just like you who have been wondering if this might just be what you need.
If this review helps, please click "YES" below.
